Newt's POV

Blue flames danced around him separating the two Scamander brothers. He could see the terror and pain in Theseus's gaze. His older brother was desperate to get to his side. At this point it was no use.

Grindelwald had separated the two for a reason. One Scamander as he learned after the battle at New York was unpredictable enough. Two with a common goal was near unstoppable.

It wasnt the only reason Grindelwald was interested in Newt however. Only himself, Grindelwald, and Queenie knew what lay just above his heart. A white wolf standing proud with mismatched eyes. Grindelwald had a hippogryff with green eyes on his own chest.

During their duel at MACUSA a barely dodged cutting curse had cut open his jacket and shirt. Seeing the white wolf had caused Grindelwald to pause in cursing Newt.

Not much else could be done that day as the Dark Lord learned Newt was his soulmate. There were still things he wanted to do and he wouldnt let the magizoologist get in his way. Even when he was captured Newt knew that the man would come back for him.

He spent the last six months hiding as much as he could from the wizard. All the while he could feel eyes upon his back and it wasn't just the aurors.

Briefly he had considered asking Albus for help but this was his problem. On top of that he didnt want to put his old Professor out. There was a history between the two men he knew. Albus had told him about it as a caution years ago.

Looking around the meeting room he could see the terrified faces of his friends. If this kept going they were all going to die. Well at least his friends and brother would. Newt doubted that Grindelwald would kill him at this point. Not unless Newt tried to fight him again.

Turning his attention back down to the center he watched with a pained expression as Credence walked towards Grindelwald. Newt's heart went out to the young man. All he wanted was to know who he was and to have a place where he belonged.

Newt knew that feeling all too well. No matter how hard his brother or Leta tried to include him. He never felt like he truly belonged anywhere. Being friends with Jacob and trying to return his creatures to his case was the closest sense of belonging he ever had.

:Would he find a sense of belonging with Grindelwald?:

Newt froze at the thought. Where in the name of Merlin had that come from? There was no way that he could seriously consider going with the Dark Lord. Right?

The more he thought about it though the more his heart longed to go to his soulmate. Maybe he could go. In exchange for the safety of his friends and brother? He hoped Grindelwald would agree. He could not bear to lose his brother even if they didnt always agree on things. If he was honest he was just so tired of running. Ignoring the pull that tried to drive him back towards the Dark Lord was becoming nearly impossible to ignore.

Newt took an aborted half step towards the flames. This brought the remainder of the living's eyes upon him. Curiosity filled the mismatched gaze of the Dark Lord.

The flames that had encircled him now formed a path down towards the Dark Lord. Newt glanced briefly back at his brother and mouthed, 'I'm sorry.' Then he squared his shoulders and walked towards Grindelwald.

A small genuine smile crossed the older wizard's face. He stepped through the flames to meet Newt. Newt's head was bent so that he was looking at his face as he approached his soulmate. Fear and uncertainty filled him along with several questions.

Would Grindelwald turn him away? Would he laugh at Newt's attempt to save his friends? What if he caged Newt within his castle?

Admittedly the last one scared the red head more than any of the others. Being caged and unable to to save creatures was his biggest fear.

Finally Grindelwald broke the silence as he questioned, "After so much running, Liebling, why have you come to me?"

"I'm not going to run away from you anymore. I promise. Just please let my brother and my friends go."

The Dark Lord hummed in thought as he brought his hand under Newt's chin. A gentle but firm pressure brought his chin up to meet the mismatched gaze. Even with the hand on his chin he slid his eyes away. Nervousness made him unable to meet the gaze for longer than a few seconds.

Whatever Grindelwald saw however he must have been happy with. His smile widened as his hand moved to grab his hand. He drew them both towards the flames. Newt only briefly hesitated as Theseus and Jacob tried convince him to return to their side.

Instead of following their shouts he took steps into the flames. They were warm but not burning like he thought they would. If anything it was a welcoming warmth. Like he was coming home.

It only took a few seconds for him to reach Grindelwald a second time. As soon as he was free of the flames Grindelwald took him into his arms.

Grindelwald whispered to him, "Liebling thank you for crossing the flames. Let us return to my home."

"My brother," Newt tried to croak out.

"Will be fine," soothed the Dark Lord, "I have ensured the flames will dissipate as soon as we apparate. No one else will be hurt this night."

And like that they were gone. As promised the flames went out the moment they left. Leaving behind a devastated brother and friends.
