My Hero Academia: Two Minds, One Body
Prologue
[Aldera Junior High (Daytime)
POV: Midoriya Izuku]
Today hadn't been a good day for one Midoriya Izuku.
Truthfully, Izuku couldn't remember the last time he had a good day. But today, it had been the worst yet. He was on two hours of sleep due to another late night of studying up on various Heroes. He missed his first train, which made him late to school, and on that second train, he accidentally dropped his pop-tarts due to someone bumping into him.
And finally, Izuku wasn't able to eat lunch due to his bullies taking his wallet at lunchtime.
But the worst came when their teacher decided to tell the class that he was planning to go into U.A.
That wound up with his desk being destroyed.
And now, after relocating to a new desk and putting his stuff away, his Hero Analysis recording notebook was snatched out from his hands.
"Oi, we're not done talking yet, Deku," a smug voice said.
Izuku glanced up at his former best friend, Bakugou Katsuki, who held his notebook.
"Katsuki, what's that?" One of Bakugou's friends asked him.
"Just a little notebook this nerd is always carrying," Bakugou answered as Izuku stood up at his desk.
"C-Come on! I'm having a bad day. Please give it back," Izuku begged.
"Aww. Little Deku's having a bad day?" Bakugou's friends mocked as Bakugou himself laughed.
"You poor puppy. You want this back?" Bakugou questioned as he held it out to him.
"Y-yes. Please," Izuka answered, praying that somewhere deep inside of this menace that Bakugou had changed into was his best friend.
Unfortunately, Izuku was cruelly let down by the Bakugou, who smacked his hands together and burned the book in response, a giant grin on his face. Izuku helplessly watched as smoke and flames rose from his notebook.
"Whoops," Bakugou taunted. "Sorry, Deku, I lost control there. Let's put this fire out, shall we?"
Before Izuku could respond, Bakugou launched the notebook over his shoulder and out of the window.
Izuku stared at Bakugou with a look of despair on his face.
"Let that teach a lesson to you, Driftwood," Bakugou told him with a sneer. "Most first-string heroes show potential early on. Most people look at them and know that they're destined for greatness. But when they look at you and people like you, all they see is a useless, Quirk-less, spineless loser who isn't worth the time."
Bakugou placed his hand on Izuku's shoulder, which caused Izuku to wince as he felt the heat from Bakugou's palm begin to burn at his jacket. "With that said, throw away that application to U.A, or else you'll wind up with some serious regret for pissing me off. Got that?"
Izuku squinted his eyes as he began to sweat, his eyes locked onto the cold gaze of Bakugou's before the taller teen smirked. "Good. Glad we could have this chat," Bakugou finished as he removed his and shoulder-checked Izuka as he walked past him with a chuckle of, "Later, you worthless idiot."
Izuka merely stared forward out the window, his body quivering as tears began to build into his eyes.
Why?
Why did Bakugou continue to do this to him? He did nothing wrong to him, but he had been treated like some second-class citizen every day for almost half of his life.
No.
Worse than that.
He was treated as if he was nothing.
"I do have one more piece of advice for you, Deku," Bakugou's voice said. "If you truly want to be a hero so bad, there's a perfect way to obtain it. If you believe they're holding your Quirk over in the next world, you should swan dive off the rooftop."
Izuku felt a cold sensation wrap-around his heart at Bakugou's words as the teen, and his goons walked out of the classroom.
Bakugou didn't mean that.
Bakugou couldn't have genuinely wanted him to kill himself, did he?
[Midoriya Residence (Nighttime)
POV: Midoriya Izuku]
By the time Deku returned home, the moon was high in the sky, but his mood was the lowest it had ever been.
After Bakugou departed, Izuku attempted to go home but was attacked by a sludge monster, and to his excitement, All-Might had saved him.
But when Izuku asked him if he could be a hero, All-Might had stated that it wouldn't exactly be possible to become a Hero without having a Quirk.
"Honey, you've barely touched your food," Midoriya Inko noted.
"Oh…" Izuku whispered. "I-I'm sorry, Mom. I'm just not hungry," Izuku told her as he excused himself and walked out before she could say anything. Izuku entered his room, shut and locked the door, then sat on his bed.
The room was completely dark as tears slowly fell down Izuku's cheeks.
"Kacchan was right," Izuku softly admitted as he stared at the application to U.A. "If All-Might says that I can't be a Hero without a Quirk. Then I genuinely am a useless, Quirk-less, loser."
"He did a number on you, huh?" a dark, familiar voice whispered from behind him, causing Izuku to freeze.
"Not you….Not again," Izuku whimpered as he bent his knees to his chest, wrapped his arms around his legs, then hid his face. But despite hiding his face, Izuku could feel him sitting in his computer chair.
Ever since that day at the river, Izuku had felt this presence. It was always there in the dark corners of his mind, watching him with interest.
At first, Izuku ignored the entity, but over the next few years, the presence was getting stronger and stronger until middle school, when the presence whispered with Izuku's voice, "Why are you allowing this?"
And that was when things took their turn for the worst.
For the last three years, this voice had been urging him to accept the truth he couldn't face.
Izuku managed to battle it back each time, but the twisted voice that mimicked his own would always come back and come back stronger.
"Why are you here?" Izuku asked.
"You know why I'm here. I'm here to help you," The voice answered. "After what that clown told you to do today, you agree with him. Why?"
"H-He was just looking out for me. H-He was a little harsh, but it came from the right p-place. And he was right. I was stupid to think I could be a hero without a Quirk," Izuku answered.
"Come on. We both know how Bakugou meant it. What kind of friend would say that and have your best interest at heart?" The voice asked.
Izuku closed his eyes and took a deep breath. "I-I know Kacchan, and I aren't on the best terms, but he really didn't want me to commit suicide…" Izuku said, his tone desperate-sounding.
"Oh, the denial is strong with you. Why can't you admit it? Your "Kacchan" is no more. He's gone, replaced by the mockery that wears his face and has his memories," The voice told him.
"Just leave me alone," Izuku begged.
"The more you deny me, the stronger and angrier I become…You need to accept the truth, or it will end badly for both of us," The voice urged him.
"Please, just leave me alone," Izuku weakly repeated.
"Why? Why do you refuse to see the reality?" The voice questioned, growing agitated. "That clown has revealed his true self to you time and again. And yet, you refuse to see this and instead agree with him. And for what?!"
Izuku flinched at the sudden shout.
"You are letting this fool dictate your life. You are letting him walk all over you, disrespect you time and again, and you follow him like a pathetic puppy dog. Is it because you admire him?! Because you admire his ambition, his confidence, his strength, his Quirk?! Answer me instead of hiding like a damn coward!" The voice screamed.
"I can't!" Izuku yelled as his body began to quiver.
The room was quiet for a moment before Izuku's soft voice whimpered out, "You're right. It's because I admire him. But it's more than that. I want to find something of the old Kacchan inside this person and remind him that we are friends. Is that so wrong?"
Izuku watched as his shadow knelt before him and asked, "So you're letting this person that does not respect you, constantly abuses you, and is actively trying to keep your face in the mud and keep you from following your dream, because you want to salvage something out of this abusive friendship?"
Izuku remained silent.
"I understand trying to salvage the good things from the bad. I do. But look at what is happening to you. Look at what Bakugou is taking from you. He's taking your dreams, your sanity, your health, and your self-respect," The shadow told him. "You don't deserve this. You don't deserve to be called these names for years and years. Don't you have any love for yourself? Or was that taken the day you found out that you didn't have your Quirk?"
Izuku's eyes widened.
"Before you found out you didn't have a Quirk, your life was going great. You had friends, a best friend, and you had a shared dream. To become a Hero. But when you found out that was not in the cards, you were desperate to go back to that time where everything made sense. Right?" His shadow questioned, his eerie glowing yellow eyes staring into his. "That was the last time you were ever happy…Wasn't it?"
Izuku was silent.
This entity was correct. The last time Izuku was happy was when he was eight years old before his dreams were ripped away. After that, it felt like he was reliving a nightmare. First, his dreams of having a Quirk and being a hero were gone, then Kacchan turned into an evil monster from his nightmares.
"You're right," Izuku finally said. "Kacchan…. B-Bakugou was the last bastion of a time when I was happy. I wanted to hang onto that last s-semblance of joy, no matter how badly he d-dragged me down and hurt me. But now, look at me. Bakugou wants me to give up on my dream and kill myself because he sees me as inferior to him. He has since the day I found out I was Quirk-less."
The shadow stared at him with a hopeful expression.
"But no more," Izuka announced with a firm tone. "N-No more will I allow his words to sway me and bring me down. He may not believe I can be a Hero. All-Might might not think I can be a Hero, but I b-believe that I can!"
The shadow smiled and replied, "Once you start this road, you cannot stop, you hear me?"
"N-Never!" Izuku exclaimed. "I-I will become a Hero no matter what happens!"
"I hear the resolution in your voice, Midoriya Izuku. It's time to bet on us instead of letting some asshole walk over us and dictate what we can or cannot do," The shadow said as his irises changed from eerie yellow to bright green.
Izuku felt a pulse in his chest as he hunched over. "W-What's going on?" Izuku asked.
"There was one other thing that was being stolen from you. And that was me," The shadow replied.
Izuku stared at the shadow as another pulse rippled through him.
After so many years of pushing this entity away, Izuku realized that he had never asked about who this entity was.
"W-Who are you?" Izuku finally asked.
"You know who I am," The shadow answered.
Izuku was confused before his eyes widened. "Are you my Quirk?" he asked.
The shadow smiled and reached over to place his hand on his chest. "Two Minds, One Body. I am you. You are me. Two sides of the Same Coin, and as long as we stick together, nothing can stop us."
And before Izuku knew it, there was a flash of bright light that brightened the entire room. And when it faded, Izuku was unconscious on his bed.
