Context: Our 4 RWBY girls appear in Gracefield Orphanage, taken care of by Salem, their caretaker. Yang, Weiss, and Blake are 11 years old while Ruby is 9 years old. They replace Emma, Ray, and Norman. There are no pairings here, just platonic friendships. Some RWBY characters (like Jaune, Nora, Pyrrha, Ren, etc.) may appear.

Ruby held her neck and stared thoughtfully at the 5 numbers on her neck. 11594. She tried to figure out if it was her birthdate or a holiday, as it left her a lingering thought. She pondered if it was something important for the future.

With a soft sigh, she shrugged the thought off and tied her red cape before going outside the bedroom to play with Yang. She and Yang grew up close, as they treat each other almost like real sisters. Sometimes the children at Gracefield would think they were half-sisters because of their close relationship.

She tied her shoelaces and exited the empty bedroom. Mama Salem was bringing tidy blankets to the bedroom and caught the sight of Ruby. With a beaming grin, Ruby waved at her. "Good Morning, Mama!" she greeted. Salem softly smiles and replied with a singsong voice, "Good morning, Ruby. Did you eat any breakfast today?"

"Yeah! I just wanted to get my red cape!" she proudly showed her crimson-red cape. The cape had a hood and was 3 feet above her ankles. She always loved that cape of hers since she was 5 years old. She never stopped wearing it, except for when it needed washing when it gets dirty or worn out.

Salem's light blue eyes shone. "Alright, have fun outside. Don't get all messy when you come back!" she reminded. "Okay!" Ruby beamed.

As Ruby began sprinting outside, she sees the children running around playing tag, talking to each other, or even just laying on the grass, gazing at the sky.

She notices Jaune and Pyrrha hanging blankets and clothes by the laundry wires and Nora playing with Ren. She was being carried by Ren on his back which made her very pleased.

Almost everyone in the orphanage knew that Nora had a crush on Ren, but she was just way too scared to confess her feelings to him. By now, Ren even knows Nora likes him, but he wants to be patient with her and will willingly wait for her confession until they get older.

She waved to them which they waved at her back.

Looking around for the three girls, she was approached by Penny, one of her good friends. "Salutations, Ruby!" Penny greeted with a smile. "Hey, Penny! Have you finished your reading?" Ruby asked. "I am halfway done! I could not help but wait for Mama to bring new books! I just love reading about the history of humanity!"

Ruby always thought that her way of speaking was strange since it was formal and too proper. But she still loved her wholesome and pure nature. "If you're looking for Yang, she's with Weiss and Blake under the tree," Penny pointed towards the large tree. "Ah, thanks, Penny! I'll meet you in the library later!"

"Kay!" Penny smiled, walking inside the house.

She finally spotted Yang and Weiss chatting and not so far away was Blake, reading a book under the tree. Yang and Weiss turned away from each other and crossed both of their arms in frustration. She wondered what they were talking about, but then she figured that they were having another disagreement again. 'Oh boy, here we go,' she thought, amusingly.

"Hey, gang!" she greeted her friends with a cheery tone. Yang and Weiss were still grumbling and still had both of their arms crossed. "So... What happened, Blake?" she asked, looking over to her dark-haired friend. "An argument between the difference of a crow and a raven," Blake answered, monotonously, as she didn't look up from her book.

"Argh! I already told you, Weiss! The only way to differentiate a crow and a raven is if their feathers glisten under the sun!" Yang argued. "Are you a dunce? Crows have fan-shaped tails while ravens have wedge-shaped tails. You can't just compare the two of them by how their feathers shine!" Weiss retorted in an irritated tone. Their argument continued on.

"They've been at this since this morning," Blake says, turning the next page. "It's really dumb anyways."

Ruby pursed her lips and tilted her head in a confused manner. She didn't know why they were arguing over something so simple. A chuckle escaped her lips, breaking the tension.

"Come on, guys! This is no time to be arguing!" Ruby calmed them down as she placed her two arms around their shoulders. "The sky's beautiful today, we should enjoy some games!"

They went silent for a moment but they were still glaring at each other silently. Ruby thought of an idea. "Last to head at the forest gets to be the 'it' during tag!" Ruby declared as she starts racing towards the middle of the field. "See ya, losers!"

Yang suddenly changed her mood into a fired-up expression. "Hey! Wait up!" With a confident smirk, she rushes after Ruby. "And who're you calling loser!" she added. "Hey! Don't get a head-start, you two!" Weiss stomps to follow the two girls. Blake sighed and shuts her book. She stood up and stretched herself, getting ready to follow the three girls into the forest. She also didn't forget to tighten her bow if it ever falls off when she runs.

Soon after followed a group of four girls screaming, laughing, and running towards the woods, causing a lot of attention from the other children. Ruby was ahead of them, but Yang was catching up quickly. Weiss was struggling as she had a hard time catching her breath. Blake was behind the three girls, choosing to jog instead of racing them. She didn't mind being the 'it' during a game of tag since she had her own ways to find everyone. That what makes her one of the stealthiest children here in the orphanage.

She finally caught up with Weiss who was excessively panting and sweating a lot. "Are you okay? Do you need to take a break?" Blake asks, concerned if Weiss was going get another cold.

Stamina and Endurance wasn't her strongest skill as she had difficulty in keeping up with the rest of the quartet. But her intelligence and quick decision-making were enough to make up for her lack of physical abilities.

"*pant* I'm... okay..." she breathed, stopping for a break. Blake held her back and shoulders, just in case if she collapses. "Let's go and catch up with these two idiots," Weiss says, managing a smile. Blake smiled back. "Yeah, we should probably catch up before we lose them,"

Blake and Weiss continued to run after them, feeling more fired up.

Both Yang and Ruby's quick-paced footsteps halted as they both touched a nearby tree.

"I WIN!" they yelled in unison.

"Nuh-uh! I touched the tree first!" Ruby said. "That's because you had a headstart! That was cheating!" Yang retorted. Ruby stuck her tongue. "Whatever you're just mad cause I was first," she jokingly jested.

"Hey, where's Weiss?" Yang asks. "And-"

"Blake!" Ruby called, as she waved to the jet black-haired girl. Weiss was beside Blake, almost faltering behind her, but she was able to catch up with her. "Weiss? Are you okay?" Ruby asked. "No! You guys just ran ahead and left me and Blake!" Weiss responded, angrily and having trouble breathing. "Sorry, sorry! It was a race!" she pleaded, as she tried to avoid Weiss' icy glare. One of the reasons why she was nicknamed "Ice Queen".

"Oh come on, Weiss! You need to increase your stamina even more, or else you'll get caught easily in a game of tag!" Yang replied. Weiss scoffed. "Easy for you to say. You're built like a machine,"

Yang was one of the most athletic children here in Gracefield, second best to Pyrrha. She's also good at taking in damage such as falling from a tree and has one of the meanest punches ever. Everyone mostly tries to avoid her high-fives.

The quartet continued to explore the forest together. Weiss and Blake chatted together about their tests, while Yang and Ruby compared their heights to see if she grew an inch. "Hahaha! You still haven't grown after drinking all that milk!" Yang laughed. "Gah! The books lied to me! They said drinking milk could improve a height of a person. Oh, the betrayal! I shall never read books again!" Ruby complained, dramatically. Yang laughed along with Ruby as Blake chuckled. Weiss rolled her eyes and shook her head playfully.
