The view of the dragons diminished until they were like silhouettes of birds. Toothless and the Light Fury led the dragons to the Hidden World. As they flew into the sunset, silence echoed across the hill where the Berkians stood. No one made a noise; just the cry of a baby shook them out of their trance. Slowly the crowd shrunk as the villagers left the hill where their beloved companions once roamed.
Darkness fell and the only remaining people were Gobber, Valka, the twins, Snotlout, Astrid, Fishlegs and Hiccup. Their eyes never moved from the sky that was now dark and filled with stars. After another long while, the rest of the gang walked away, leaving the chief alone.
A tear rolled down his cheek as he interpreted what just happened. "Toothless..." he breathed faintly. For Hiccup, Toothless was his everything: his dragon, friend, ally, soulmate. And now he was gone. As the young Haddock stared into the ocean a familiar voice echoed through his head. "With love comes loss son." He knew his father was right but he wondered why he felt this way, Toothless isn't dead, like his father, he is still on the same planet. But the night fury's absence made it feel as though he did. Hiccup's thoughts then turned to Grimmel and the battle. He let go to save Toothless; he was going to sacrifice his life for him. And a part of him wished he did. If I took the fall maybe the dragons didn't have to leave. But he was wrong. He did the right thing, but it felt so wrong. His sadness turned into anger as he thought of the killer who wanted his friends and family dead. He wanted to kill him himself but what good would that do.
By the time Hiccup snapped out of his grief he realised he was alone. He slowly got up and walked back to his tent, his legs weary from the fight. As he ventured to the forest of tents he heard sobbing.
"Why did I waste my life?" The words came from his mother. Hiccup without thinking walked to her tent. Of course it was upsetting for Valka; they were her life for 20 years. Hiccup moved the sheet to see his mother kneeling infront of his father's helmet. She turned around and saw her son.
"Oh Hiccup," she engulfed him in a hug. And Hiccup melted into her embrace. He became a child in the comfort of his mother. "Mum, this must be way worse for you then me-"
"No. We are all equally affected regardless of our history." She stroked his hair.
"I wish I didn't leave. I wasted my life. I neglected my husband and my baby." Hiccup lifted his head and looked her in the eye.
"Mum, don't blame yourself. Me and dad... we missed your every single day... even if you never came back we would still love you."
"That is the same for Toothless, " he stroked her son's cheek, "He will always love you and you will always love him. It is heartbreaking but, it's like what your father said.."
"With love comes loss," they spoke in unison.
There was silence again. Hiccup slowly shifted out of his mother's hug and got up. They looked at each other and the young chief walked out of her tent.
As he was going to walk back to his hut, he saw the blacksmith sitting on a rock.
" 'iccup," his voice wasn't cheery and lively, it was sombre and shallow. Hiccup sat down next to his boss.
"Gobber... thank you... for everything. " He didn't know why he said what he said but it just came out. The viking before him was not only a mentor, he was a second father. Without Gobber Hiccup wouldn't have been able to make Toothless' tail. The though of the reptile returned to his bereaved mind.
"No, thank you. You may not see it but without you, we wouldn't be where we are today. Thank you, chief." He patted him on his slim back and walked to his temporary hut. Hiccup wanted to feel pride but all his heart would take was the heartbreak of departing from the dragons.
Hiccup felt stupid, Dragon utopia... more like dystopia. Again he knew he was wrong but he wanted to believe this was right.
Hiccup decided to enter into his tent when he saw Astrid. Her hair was down and her eyes were baggy. Both knew each others pain and they walked into the chief's tent. Astrid pulled Hiccup into a hug while he placed Astrid on his lap to hold her. For Hiccup, Astrid was only left and he held her protectively, scared she may also disappear. Both were still in their armour, the scales of their friends. Green eyes stared into her ocean ones and their lips met. It started slow and sweet but became hungry for more. Hiccup placed Astrid on his makeshift bed and she pulled him closer. Both wanted to rip each others clothes off and just make love to subside their pain. But for Astrid and Hiccup, they decided that this wasn't going to be the case. They finally broke for air and Hiccup began to cry.
"Hiccup..." she whispered. Astrid knew how hard this was for her betrothed and she felt the need to stay strong for him. "You did the right thing, they're safe and so are we." Hiccup breathed deeply into his lover's arms.
"I know. But it... it just-"
"I know, " her voice cracked as her own tears started falling. Hiccup facepalmed himself mentally. Of course it's not just me, what am I doing. "I love you," he spoke into her hair. Astrid shifted slightly.
"Its not just that... I saw you nearly die before my eyes... I- I love you and I couldn't help but think what if I lost both of you." Hiccup stroked her cheek.
"... Thor knows you would have killed me before those rocks." They both shared a faint smile. Astrid gently punched his shoulder.
"You bet." Both were leaning in for round 2 when a familiar voice interrupted them.
"Uhm hey guys," The couple got up to see the twins, Fishlegs and Snotlout outside in the night, also with their armour on.
Tuffnut spoke, "We were wondering if you would like to sit by the fire with us," Not even the twins could pull a laugh. It was as if the gang were broken.
"Sure," they got up and walked with their friends to the camp fire. There were three logs where the gang all sat on. There was more deafening silence as their eyes just followed the flow of the fire. It reminded them of the dragons too much.
Hiccup cleared his throat, "You know, when I asked you guys to help rescue Toothless when he was discovered... I never thought you guys would actually help... I thought I was going to lose him."
Snotlout spoke up, "We also thought you were weird... well weirder, but when you helped me bond with... Hookfang... it changed my life."
"Same," Fishlegs joined, "We are glad that you came to us and introduced us to this new world... it may not have... lasted... but-"
"It was the coolest moment of our lives," Ruffnut finished.
Tuffnut lifted his head suddenly, " You guys remember when Meatlug became magnetic?" The whole gang started smirking.
"And when Hiccup became attached to her, hehehe, yeah," Astrid wiped a tear from his eye.
Hiccup also amused, "Well at least wasn't trying to be burnt alive like some,"
"Oh really funny, Hiccup, what about Fishface and Darkvarg?" Laughter filled their void.
"You know what was actually funny, Astrid singing to the death song,"
"Uh let's not go there, at least I wasn't chased by a zippleback for saving their life," she smirked at her betrothed.
"You want to go there milady, teaching Dagur to fly Shattermaster."
"HAHAHAHAHAAAA!!" they all bursted out llaughing. So much so that the rest of Berk would have been shocked by their behaviour. The gang shared their stories as the sun ascended to the clouds.
The dragons may have been gone but they're stories will last forever. Hiccup began to smile, accepting their fate.
"Do you remember when Toothless had to carry Stoick around Berk," Hookfang sniggered.
"I swear he bruised my tail flaps with his weight." The night fury replied.
"Lets not forget when Tuffnut thought he was turning into a were dragon." Meatlug joined.
"Or when Snotlout tried to control us... we really see why you annoy him," Barf laughed.
"Yeah well welcome to my world." The monstrous nightmare answered.
The dragons and the light fury were in the Hidden World, also equally exchanging their tales. As the rest of the dragons told the light fury all about the Berkians, the alpha slowly went to the edge of the waterfall and looked up. Toothless was just as sad about leaving Hiccup but it was to protect him. The hunters wanted him and the dragons, not Berk, and now, the humans will be safe from all harm.
With love comes loss but both Hiccup and Toothless decided that time will never keep them apart.
