H-haven't you locked the door?

This was the weekend for their monthly visit to BunnyBurrow. As usual they packed their bags, Ben took them to the train station, and they the boarded the BunnyBurrow Express. Everything seemed to be going as always until the train began to slow and then came to a complete stop. Then an announcement came over the loudspeaker.

"We're sorry, but we will be delayed for several hours," the conductor said, sounding just as unhappy as Nick now felt. "The crossing ahead is blocked by a stalled truck."

He pulled down the window and leaned out. Sure enough in the fading light he could see the truck blocking the tracks just ahead. He guessed that the train had come to a stop only about fifty feet away from the crossing. The trucker had been very very lucky and they'd both seen the results when one hadn't been. He dropped back in seat and his bunny raised an eyebrow.

"We're going to be here a while," he said and her ears drooped. Then he put an arm around his bunny and gave her a little squeeze. "It'll be OK."

"We're going to be late!" she said and put her head on his arm.

"Maybe you ought to call your parents and let them know," he said, raising an eyebrow.

She sighed and took out her phone. Then he leaned over and kissed her cheek.

"Nick!" she hissed and looked around the train car.

He chuckled and leaned back in his seat to wait, closing his eyes. Five minutes later he heard the door open and saw the conductor enter just as Judy finished her call.

"Sir, can we help?" she asked and flashed her badge.

Nick rolled his eyes and then took out his badge too. The Deer looked at the badges and their IDs and then he smiled. Nick sighed again.

"Officer Wilde," he said, looking down at the Fox and then the Rabbit, "and Officer Wilde, the Sheriff hasn't got here yet so maybe you could give them a hand. Please!"

Judy smiled and then unzipped her bag and brought out her uniform.

"You brought it with you?!"

"You never know," she said and grinned.

He closed his eyes again and lay back in his seat to wait. Five minutes later she was back and in full uniform. He groaned and stood. Then the conductor led them to first car and opened the door. Judy hopped down and he followed. As they walked along the train the ballast shifted under their feet several times, but neither of them fell.

"You know you don't have to be a police officer twenty-four hours a day."

"Of course I do!" she said and smiled. "We have to make the world a better place!"

He chuckled.

"When you're right you're right!"

Several hours turned out to be six. First they had to find flood lights and then a crane large enough to lift the truck since it was actually caught on a track. Then they had to replace the rail itself which had been bent out of true. At least someone had the bright idea of taking one from behind the train. Of course even after the track was cleared they were still an hour away from BunnyBurrow. So when they arrived it was after midnight and Jill, Judy's sister, was there waiting for them. The tall Rabbit looked down at her diminutive twin with a twinkle in her eye and smiled. Nick knew this was going to be bad and winced.

"You look so cute in your uniform."

Judy growled and Nick met the taller Rabbit's purple eyes. Her smile widened just a bit and Nick had to bite his cheek to keep from laughing. Judy looked at them both for a moment and he expected the usual explosion, but then she turned on her heel and stomped off toward the parking lot. They followed and tall rabbit took his arm. He was positive he'd hear about this later too.

The thirty minute trip to the burrow was an unusually quiet one and he knew the bunny would be grumpy for a least a couple of days, but had a plan. Bonnie had fixed them a light meal which they quickly ate. Then after a few minutes of small talk they made their good nights and went to the guest house. Until a year ago they stayed in Judy's old room, but as the burrow's population grew they'd eventually needed the space. So Stu had built a cottage for them away from the main burrow. It was secluded so they could have their privacy or so they always thought. Of course Nick knew his bunny was still annoyed and tentatively pulled her close. He kissed her cheek and gave her a little squeeze. After a few minutes they both drifted off to sleep.

When he awoke again the sun was shining in the large window. He felt the warm body pressed against his and nuzzled her neck. He open his eyes and she still a smile on her face. His plan had worked. He smiled too and only then did look up to see the young Rabbits. He looked around and there were at least two dozen of them that surrounded the bed and looking in the widow. His first thought was they he'd died in his sleep and this was his eternal punishment, but he still felt the warmth beside him. He surreptitiously moved away from his bunny.

If this were happening to someone else he would've thought it funny, but unfortunately it wasn't. Most of them were clustered around the bed just looking at him – a couple just peaking over the edge. The rest just boldly stared at him like they'd never seen a Fox before. One was peaking under the sheet and unconsciously began to pull it up trying to cover himself. Then he felt one touch his tail and looked over shoulder. She was actually putting rubber bands around his fur and another was petting it. He tentatively reached over and touched Judy's arm.

"Ca... carrots, h-haven't you locked the door?" he said, giving her the slightest nudge.

She sighed and stretched. Then she opened her eyes, looked at him and then around the room, and snatched up the cover, pulling it up to her chin.

"Why are they here?" she whispered.

"Actually I think a much better question would be when did they get here?"

Judy's ears turned a cherry red.
