The streets of Vale were pretty crowded this morning which was pretty unfortunate seeing as how all Ruby needed was the new issue of a particularly awesome comic, and perhaps check to see what else the busy old man had in stock.
Ruby Rose would usually go visit the dust shop early in the morning after breakfasts at Signal academy. Ruby was already packed in her dorm room. Usually her bed would be right next to Yang's but...her sister was going to Beacon this year.
The dorms felt lonely without her, so lonely that she almost left to get her comic last night just to take her mind off of things. Those plans were however, ruined, when some jerkface decided to drench her in both their dinners. She blamed Ruby of course even though it was her who didn't look where she was going. So Ruby ended up taking a shower and heading straight to bed. Thinking about the incident made Ruby groan in annoyance as she turned the corner.
Her annoyance was however cut short as she saw Vale city police right outside her destination. In a rush she went to the first officer she could reach.
"Excuse me sir? What happened is the old man okay?"
"Huh? Oh yeah he's fine. Some goons tried to rob the place last night but as they were making their getaway a huntress showed up and kicked the snot out of them."
"Rookie! This is a crime scene, what are you doing giving out all that info!"
"What? The case is solved right? Plus she's just a kid it's not like she's involved at all." the officer said as he made his way to his senior
"Whoa." Ruby said as she looked at the officer as he got scolded. "Aw man! I could have seen a Huntress in action if it hadn't been for that jerkface!" Ruby pouted as she stomped on the ground. The officer walked his way over to Ruby looking a bit sheepish after he had just been scolded.
"Sorry there kid. But uh, would you mind not telling anybody what I told you. Apparently it's uhh...Kind of a no no."
"Sure." Ruby replied, still pouting over the missed opportunity.
"Thanks kid! Uh, also my boss says you gotta move along. The store will be closed until the guy can repair the damages."
"Awwwww, man!"
...
"You have got to be kidding me." Weiss said as she stared up at Jaune who was pinned to a tree with a Javelin
"Heh, Hey snow angel." Jaune said with a sly grin that was much too confident for someone pinned to a tree.
"Don't tell me your partner was so tired of you already that they left you for Grimm."
"Actually, someone just kinda pinned me here. I don't actually know who. You're the first one I've seen actually. I guess this makes us-"
"No." Weiss interrupted as she turned away to find someone more competent.
"Wait! We're supposed to be-"
"Can't hear you!"
"Weiiiiiiisssss!"
"Ugh, of all the-"
"You shouldn't leave your partner you know." Pyrrah interrupted
"Pyrrah! I-"
"Although it is unfortunate to be stuck with a partner who would so readily abandon someone in need of help." Pyrrah said as she used her semblance to retrieve AkoĂșo and gently bring Jaune down. "However, the rules headmaster Ozpin made were quite clear."
"Thanks." Jaune said to which Pyrrah nodded and went on her way without making eye contact with Jaune or Weiss..
"I'm off to find my own partner. Farewell." Weiss watched her as she left with a blank expression. Sighing, she walked past Jaune into the forest.
"Well," she called out, "If you're going to be my partner you better keep up!" Startled Jaune jogged to catch up with Weiss.
"Hey, wait up!"
...
"Lie Ren, Nora Valkyrie, Pyrrah Nikos and Cardin Winchester. You are now team Lupen. Lead by, Cardin Winchester." Cardin puffed out his chest and Yang had to suppress a laugh. The way it looked in the Emerald Forest all he was good for was barking out orders. Nikos had to save him from several Grimm.
"Man how is this guy picking them?" She said as she nudged her partner's shoulder. "My baby sister could do a better job."
"Hmm." Blake hummed as she continued to read her book.
"Yang Xiao Long, Bla-
"That's us!" Yang said as her and her partner headed for the headmaster
"Belladonna, Weiss Schnee and Jaune Arc. You are now team Basil. Led by, Jaune Arc." Yang's jaw went slack as their leader was named. He was even worse than Cardin was! It seemed as if she was not the only one who thought so as she looked to her other team mates. Blakes face was as neutral as ever. Weiss however looked like she was about to blow a fuse.
The headmaster congratulated them all and sent them on their way to celebrate. Yang immediately went to her room with Weiss who was grumbling the whole way after she was settled and chose in her night wear she settled down on her bed. She wished she could tell her sister all about the past couple of days. She could write a letter but nothing would beat seeing her shining silver eyes light up at every awesome moment. No she'd wait till the weekend, and head over to Vale to surprise her. Just then Blake walked in followed by Jaune.
"Thanks again for leading me back here. I don't know how I ended up in the headmasters office."
"Mhm." Blake hummed as she got her clothes ready. Weiss came out of the bathroom in a nightgown and let out a yelp.
"What do you think you're doing here!" Yang sat up and looked at her confused.
"Uhh wha-" Jaune was interrupted as Weiss stomped her foot on the ground
"Ugh! They couldn't at least put you in a separate room! Close your mouth and stop gawking at me you. You-"
"Woah, slow down there Princess." Yang interrupted as she placed herself between Jaune and Weiss. "It's just a room, it's not like we have to share beds. You'll be fine."
"Ugh, just look at him!" Weiss shrieked. Yang looked to Jaune to find he was in fact openly staring at Weiss with glazed over eyes.
"Yeah, okay. I guess I can see your point. But I mean come on he's harmless enough. He won't do anything. Right Jaune." No response Yang frowned and poked him in the shoulder, "Jaune?" Shaking his head and putting on a smooth smile he slipped past Yang and put an arm around Weiss shoulder.
"So, Snow Angel, how about you me and Vale city. Whatdya say? I could show you a good time if you can keep up."
All three girls in the room were shocked into silence. A minute passed and Jaune seemed to understand what he accidentally implied. He was too late though as he saw red in Yang's eyes, an angry yell and her fist coming straight for him. Jaune lay flat on the floor completely out of it. Weiss shivered at the situation. She looked to Yang and saw the red slowly ebbing away. She composed herself and nodded her head toward her.
"Thank you Yang."
"No problem princess." She said and shook off the excess energy. "Geese," she said as she looked down at the unmoving Jaune. "I didn't think I hit him that hard."
"Mmm, No I don't think you did." Weiss said as she poked Jaune's leg with her foot. "Now that I think about it, he got quite a few cuts from the branches in the forest. I don't think his Aura is unlocked."
"What!?" Both Blake and Yang shouted.
"You didn't kill him did you?" Blake asked nervously and Yang's eyes shot open in a panic. She quickly knelt down and checked. Feeling a strong pulse and calm breathing she let out a sigh of relief.
"Oh thank God! No he's good. Just knocked out. How does he not have his aura unlocked!"
"I have no idea. It's something we're going to have to deal with though."
"Ugh, tomorrow. I'm getting changed." Blake said as she stepped over Jaune's body. Weiss just stood there with her arms crossed staring at Jaune. Yang frowned as she rubbed the back of her head.
"Sorry, sometimes. I get a bit carried away. I guess." Weiss looked at her shocked. "I didn't mean to almost kill your partner. Probably scared you too." at that Weiss scoffed.
"There's no need. He was completely out of line. To flirt with a woman while she's should be in the comfort of her own home. As if a brute like you could scare me." Yang smiled at Weiss' light insult. She could tell it was just to cheer her up as there was no bite to the word. "I would have done so myself." Weiss' lip twitched just a bit before she continued. "If you hadn't beat me to the punch."
"HAH!" Yang broke into a huge grin as she pointed at Weiss. "That was a pun! The princess likes puns!"
"S-shut up! I do not!"
"Heh, you so do!"
"Just-Ugh enough. What are we going to do about him." Letting it slide for now, Yang pondered the question.
"I don't know how comfortable I feel with him sleeping in here with us." Blake said as she exited the bathroom. "Intentional or not, that was really creepy."
"Same." Yang said while Weiss hummed in agreement. Snapping her fingers Yang grabbed the sleeping blond and slung him over her shoulder. She placed him in the bathroom and rushed back into the room, grabbed a blanket and a pillow and tossed it in the bathroom before closing it and dusting her hand off. "There! Now Princess, just make another one of those ice walls to lock the door and we're good!"
"How do we get him out?" Blake asked
"I'll just melt it!" Yang said happily.
"Works for me." Weiss said.
Once they were done all three went to their beds for the night and Yang couldn't help but smile. Ruby's gonna love this.
...
It was the end of the week and Blake was ready to just relax on her bed with a good book. However her last class for the day was just dragging on. The professor was just telling stories of his past glories and showed no sign of stopping. She managed to finish all her homework for the week and there was nothing to do but watch as her partner was on the verge of passing out. She looked to Weiss who was adamantly trying to ignore Jaunes apologies. Blake didn't blame her. It was honestly an incredibly uncomfortable situation. The bell rang and Yang bolted up with her fists ready. Which caused Jaune to fall off his chair and Weiss to smile.
"Whoa." Yang rubbed her eyes. "That class went by fast."
"Right." Blake said with a skeptical eye. "Fast." Blake got up to and Yang and Weiss followed her out. Hearing a faint "Wait up." from behind them they all rolled their eyes.
"Soooo, tomorrow's Saturday! I'm going into Vale to visit my sister at Signal. You guys wanna come?"
"No. I'm good." Blake said not liking the idea of the crowded city. She'd much prefer a quiet day reading and relaxing. Not wanting to seem rude she smiled at Yang. "Thanks though." Yang simply shrugged her shoulders.
"Maybe next time. How bout you princess?"
"I-" before Weiss could reply Jaune ran up next to her and smiled.
"So Weiss! I know you're still upset. I get it totally not cool of me. So I figured tomorrow we could head into town and grab a bite to eat. Maybe catch a movie. Whatdya say?"
"No, tomorrow I'm going with Yang to surprise her sister."
"Oh! That sounds fun. Maybe we could all go an-"
"No." Yang said voice hard and eyes red glaring daggers at Jaune. He gulped and opened his mouth to respond but was cut off by Yang. "I am not taking you to meet my baby sister just so you can flirt with her. You're not going. That's. It."
"But I-" he stopped talking as the edges of Yang's hair started to spark and the temperature in the hallway grew. Shoulders slumped, he just nodded.
"Good!" Yang said and continued walking back to the dorm. "Oh and Jaune, Blakes staying here. If I find out you've been bothering my partner." She looked over her shoulder, eyes still a blazing red. "You'll wake up in a hospital next time."
A shiver went down Blakes spine as she watched Yang walk off with Weiss trailing behind her. It was terrifying to see just how quickly her temper flared. On one hand it was nice to know that Yang would have her back, but she had seen that kind of anger before. It never leads any place good. With a sigh Blake followed her teammates to her room.
...
Relations in team BASL were slightly strained. Blake did her best to kept at a distance from everyone on the team for different reasons. Weiss for being a Schnee, Yang for her anger, and Jaune for his early show of disrespecting females. Despite this she eventually became fairly close to Weiss and Yang. But it wasn't the same story for Jaune. She knew his awkwardness was just a case of him not understanding the difference between confidence and arrogance but his persistence made that more and more difficult to believe. Both Yang and Weiss tried to have as little to do with him as possible for the same reason, only really spending time together in class, doing homework and training. Because of this he spent most of his time with team LWPN who had similar problems with their leader but after angering Nora one too many times his bullying ways calmed down significantly and while not as kind as the other members of the team he became more quiet and thoughtful. His words definitely stung but he never said anything out of malice merely out of necessity.
Yang and Weiss spent most of their time together and actually got along quite well. They always tried to include Blake in their plans and for the most part she went along with them on campus, but never really ventured into the city. They didn't push as they never wanted to pressure her but they always offered. Despite her lack of interest in the city the three girls became quite close. Life was calm and all in all everyone at Beacon was happy.
Ruby, however, was not so lucky. Things got harder for her at signal after her sister left. Once people realized she was weak in hand to hand combat she became an easy target for any bully. Of course no one would mess with her when she had her weapon. It didn't make her life any easier. Few people hung out with her so that a target wouldn't be put on their back as well. Not wanting her sister to worry about her she kept it a secret. But in actuality, the rare weekends when Yang and her teammate Weiss would visit were the highlight of the rest of her time at signal.
Eventually she had enough and found a teacher at signal who was a master at hand to hand combat and asked to study under her.
Ruby was dedicated and worked day and night to improve herself. It was a different kind of fighting then what Yang had taught her but she found that this worked for her better. It wasn't so much about raw strength. It was more focused on taking advantage of your opponents strength. In the beginning of her second year without Yang she was paired to fight hand to hand with one of the strongest fighters in her class. He wasn't a bully but he had never lost a fight. No one expected her to win but in the end Ruby had not only won but had broken his arm. After that no one bullied her, they were too afraid to even go near her. They thought she was a monster.
Terrified of her own abilities Ruby continued to train on her own. She didn't want to hurt anyone. She was constantly second guessing herself. Sure that any move she made was a possible injury to her classmates caused by her. To improve herself she paired her semblance with her fighting style and became a feared warrior that easily gained entrance into Beacon.
