WHERE YOUR HEART BELONGS.

The big day arrived, the day that it was supposed to be Julia´s happiest day ever. After all, she was going to merry a man she loved, Dr. Darcy Garland, an exceedingly kind and funny man she had met while in Buffalo and with whom she slowly became infatuated. Sure, to be honest, her heart still longed for somebody else, but yet, she decided to take a deep breath and move on.

So, as the time approached, the good doctor sat in front of her dressing table, already dressed in her wedding gown, only fixing her hair and makeup, when suddenly she heard knocks on her door. Not knowing who it was, she absently asked the person to come in. Except the face at the door was Darcy Garland wearing his everyday clothes.

''Darcy, what are you doing?'' she asked, shocked. ''It is bad luck for the groom to see the bride before the wedding, you know that?''

''You look beautiful!'' he said simply and her smile vanished.

''Is everything alright? Why aren't you ready?'' she asked quietly.

''Julia, we need to talk,'' he said, walking inside the room and closing the door behind him.

''Darcy, you are scaring me,'' she said and in response, he took her hand in his.

''Julia, what you will say, if I told you your sister showed me the letter the detective wrote to you?'' he asked and Julia got up, furious.

''She shouldn't have done that!'' Julia snapped.

''No, she should, before it was too late,'' Darcy said.

''Too late? What do you mean?'' she smiled, confused.

''Julia, you would be truly happy with me, even knowing your heart belongs to someone else?''

''Don´t be silly Darcy, my heart belongs to you… and he wrote that letter a year ago, so...'' she lied. ''Now go get dressed, otherwise we will be late to our own wedding.''

''Julia, don´t fool yourself, you know your heart belongs to the detective… I know it, your sister knows it and I suppose the whole station house knows as well… you saw the look on that constable´s face when you gave him the invitation,'' he said, and Julia blushed.

''Constable Crabtree has always been the sentimental one… you should see his face when William…'' she stopped in the middle of her sentence, just being reminded of that week when Murdoch went missing, broke her heart.

However, to her surprise, Darcy just smiled. ''So, you don't deny?'' he asked.

''Darcy I… I'm really sorry…'' she said turning her back to him.

''No…'' he started, holding her hands. ''No, Julia, you don´t have anything to apologize for, you did nothing wrong,'' he smiled. ''I tried to deny it too, thinking it was only my imagination, but I saw your faces and how you look at each other… the detective actually. You know how to be an actress sometimes,'' he said and she laughed.

''Darcy, I want to be honest with you, to learn to love you as you deserve and build a life with you.''

''But?''

''But you are right, my heart does belong to William Murdoch,'' she said. ''I did try to forget him, to learn to love you… but the harder I try, harder it is to forget him.''

For a minute, they kept the silence, just looking to each other, when suddenly Darcy looked at his watch and smiled back to Julia, with an idea in mind.

''It's not too late, we still have time, we still can call off the wedding,'' he said and Julia´s eyes widened in surprise, a mix of happiness and sadness washing over her.

''No, Darcy, what… My future lies with you, I promise I…''

''Why are you doing this Julia?''

''I don´t want to break your heart,'' she said.

''You are welling to break both of our hearts to live a life without love and happiness? You don't deserve it Julia, none of us deserve it,'' he said embracing her. ''I´m not mad at you. Don´t worry - you should go.''

''But what about you?''

''I will tell everyone we called off the wedding, as we both found out it would be a loveless one, so we both came to an agreement that it was better to end it here and now,'' Darcy explain. ''Good luck Julia. You deserve the best.''

''Thank you Darcy… and I do really like you and I do hope you find someone who truly loves you.'' She gave him a tight hug and left, still wearing the wedding grown.

At the station, William Murdoch and the Inspector talked. Just the night before, he let a guilty prisoner go free, not to mention he had escaped prison himself. This way, after receiving a punishment, the detective decided to let go of his badge, when suddenly, the Station´s door opened, and Julia came in.

''Aren't you supposed to get married young lady?'' the Inspector asked confused, but instead Julia directed her answer toward Murdoch.

''William, I want to know about your feelings for me,'' she asked, speaking rapidly.

''Julia… where´s Darcy?'' the detective asked.

''Darcy and I decided to end everything, rather than go on and live a loveless marriage, as we both know my heart belongs to someone else,'' she said. ''Now answer my question William, please.''

''I will leave you to it,'' the Inspector said.

''No, Sir, wait. I want you to witness,'' Murdoch said. ''Julia, my feelings for you, are from pure love… Since the first time I saw you working in the morgue, since that first time you spoke to me, I thought: 'That's the woman I want to spend my life with,'" he said. ''I really apologize, if I hurt your feelings by not saying it so earlier. I didn't know what was wrong with me. I do love you Julia, very much.''

For a minute, they kept silent, just looking into each other´s eyes, when suddenly, Julia approached him slowly. Of course, for a second, he thought she was going to hit him, but instead, she just caressed his cheek.

''I love you too William,'' she started. ''While in Buffalo I tried to forget you and when I met Darcy, I thought he would be the chance I needed to move on from you, but I never could. You are the love of my life William, the one in my heart, since the first time I met you,'' she said. ''You want to start over? You think we can manage?''

''Yes, I suppose we can.'' William said and they kissed passionately, not caring if they were at a police station, kissing in front of their superior. They just wanted to start fresh, now without interference.

END.
