April Fools
Meredith and Addison are bitter rivals in an endless prank war.
"It's her," Addison huffs exasperatedly as she throws out her coffee.
"What's her?" Mark asks her.
"It's Meredith. Meredith Grey. She always does this. She spoils my day in every single way possible. Last week, she switched out my lab coat with Derek's and I was wearing a size too big for me all day. The week before that, she rearranged all of my stationery to be in the wrong places. I don't even know how she got in my office!" Addison sighs as she pours herself another cup.
"Sounds serious," Mark smirks.
"It is," Addison glares at him. "And just when I have an early morning, she puts salt in the sugar bowl," she says as she takes out the extra sugar.
"So is there any reason that she does this to you or?" Mark pries.
"No," says Addison.
"Really?" Mark asks her.
"Okay, well, I might have had something to do with it…" Addison smiles to herself as she picks up her new cup of coffee.
"Good luck with that," Mark smirks as he sees Addison walk away, scheming.
"SERIOUSLY!?" Meredith sighs as she bites into a cookie that's just flour inside.
"That was like the oldest trick in the book," says Cristina.
"I know, but I'm hungry, and they looked tasty," Meredith pokes the rest of the cookies to see if they are all fake, which of course, they are.
"Why are you even obsessed with this rivalry anyway?" Cristina asks her.
"She gets under my skin, plus I can't let her win now," says Meredith.
"Alright then, but you might want to watch out for your shoes," says Cristina.
"What kind of riddle even is that?" Meredith asks her.
"Oh," says Meredith as she steps in a strategically placed patch of bubble gum on the floor.
She can hear Addison giggling maniacally from the next hallway over.
"Why do I feel as though this is going to get entirely out of hand?" Cristina sighs, as she pats Meredith on the back before she walks off into her surgery.
Addison watches Meredith cleaning glue off of her shoe as she plans her next prank.
"I've been saving these boxes all week," Addison rubs her fingers together evilly as she wraps them all in multiple layers.
She lays them out in Meredith's mailbox one by one, all sent from various medical companies so she'll be sure to feel the need to open them.
Of course, she's soon interrupted by a flurry of pages for her all over the hospital, which turn out to be for made-up or minor favors.
"Damn it, Meredith, I have work to do," Addison sighs, as she runs back to her office.
Meredith laughs as she sees the redhead running back and forth all day, and she's pleased with herself until she finds a thick layer of post-it notes coating the inside of her locker.
"Clean that up, Grey," Bailey sighs as she sees the whole pile of them explode onto the floor.
"Yes, Dr. Bailey," Meredith smiles through her teeth.
Oh, it was on.
When Addison walks into her office again, she's welcomed with a shower of confetti that must have been poised on the top of the door.
"Why don't you just stop?" Callie asks Addison as she very carefully unwraps her sandwich and checks it before she bites into it.
"I don't know, it's a habit, or maybe an addiction. All I know is there's nothing more satisfying than knowing that I've played a successful prank on her," says Addison.
"And how much of your free time have you spent on this?" Callie asks her.
"A sizable portion of it," says Addison.
"Girl, you've got to get out there and meet someone. That'll help with life satisfaction," says Callie.
"I don't know if this is the right time," says Addison.
"There's never a perfect time," says Callie. "Have some confidence, you're hot, I'm sure you'll get a great match," says her friend.
"Alright," says Addison.
"There you go," says Callie.
And that's when the prank scene goes radio silent.
Meredith pranks Addison once more, she sticks a paper cutout of a face on the mirror next to Addison so that she'll jump because she thinks it's a person.
It works, but somehow, Addison doesn't retaliate.
Meredith goes again, and she tries to mess with Addison by dyeing her water with orange food dye, but Addison just sips it and goes on with her life.
Finally, (despite the constant pleading from Alex, and Izzie, and George, and Cristina that she's getting way too obsessed with this war), she even fills Addison's car with helium balloons, and still nothing.
And that's when Meredith decides that she has to confront the redhead.
"What the hell is wrong with you!?" Meredith storms at Addison after work.
"What do you mean?" Addison puts her hands on her hips.
"You've given up!? But we were just getting started," says Meredith.
"Well, maybe I've got other things in my life other than thinking of ways to torture you, Meredith, have you ever thought of that?" Addison asks her.
"Oh really, and what would those be, huh?" Meredith says, calling her out on her bluff.
"Well, I'm seeing someone," says Addison, hoping that Meredith doesn't ask her for details.
"I want all of the details," says Meredith, raising an eyebrow.
"We aren't friends, Meredith," Addison huffs, as she tries to escape the encounter.
"Oh please, we don't get along but we do like to gossip. And the fact that you've got nothing to share leads me to believe that you're making this up," says Meredith.
"Well, I'm not," says Addison lamely.
"Tell me about your date then," says Meredith.
"Well, uh, we met online, and-" Addison mumbles for a while before Meredith cuts in again.
"That's not a real person," says Meredith. "And that's a fact because you got that name off the real estate sign that's right next to us."
"Fine, well then maybe I don't have a date tonight, but I'm busy Meredith. There's work and there are chores, and I still don't have to justify myself to you," says Addison.
"So you'll admit that I've won then?" Meredith smirks, as she corners the redhead.
"And stop all this fun? Now why would I do that," says Addison.
"Now that's more like it," says Meredith.
"What on earth is your angle here, do you just like seeing me getting upset?" Addison rolls her eyes dramatically.
"Maybe," says Meredith. "I think you're the hottest when you're angry. It's a guilty pleasure of mine," the blonde smirks at her.
"Ugh, you are so weird," says Addison, while she tries to contain her grin at Meredith's admission that she finds her attractive.
"And I'm not the one who sculpted chocolate chip cookies out of pure flour," says Meredith.
"It didn't take that long," says Addison.
"It didn't take that long to get you to admit that you secretly like me," says Meredith.
"Which I did not," says Addison, while she's still burning a little.
Meredith is pretty smart and witty, and Addison does like passionate people.
"Oh please, you're checking me out right now," says Meredith.
"I was just sizing you up," says Addison.
"For a prankster, you really are a terrible liar," says Meredith.
"And for a flirt, you really aren't very subtle," Addison retorts, finally engaging in this part of the conversation.
So she sort of does like Meredith, it's just a fact. It doesn't have to mean anything, these interactions just happen to have grown on her.
"No need to be subtle when you always stare at me while you're pranking me," says Meredith.
"Oh, and you're the one that's always sneaking into my office," says Addison.
"You make it too easy," says Meredith, before she laughs again.
"You know, I have a thought," Addison announces, as she leans into Meredith, purposely speaking close to her ear.
"What is it, genius," Meredith says sarcastically as she closes her eyes and appreciates Addison's hot breath on her skin.
"We could team up," says Addison. "Think of our brains put together. Our friends would never know what hit them," she offers.
"And we could induct them, and start a whole next level of prank warring, says Meredith.
"It's genius," says Addison, as she picks Meredith up off the ground and spins her in celebration.
"Pure genius," says Meredith, as she wraps her arms around Addison.
"Do you want to go somewhere, and we can plot together?" Meredith asks Addison, and Addison accepts easily.
"Okay, so we'll prank Cristina in the morning, along with Alex. And Izzie and George are next, in the afternoon. And finally, we'll round it all out with Callie in the early evening, and bam, then we get Mark," says Meredith.
"This is going to be a long day," Addison smiles.
"It is," says Meredith.
"You're the only one I could trust with this sort of thing," says Addison.
"So are you," Meredith smiles.
"Okay, this is going to sound super strange coming from me, but I kinda want to kiss you right now," says Addison.
"I've been thinking the very same thing," says Meredith.
"Kiss me," Addison challenges.
"You're on," Meredith challenges back.
When their lips meet, it's fierce, and it's hot, and it's all the pent-up energy of everything they've ever felt for each other. Admiration, appreciation, a little bit of rage. It's unyielding, and it's impressive. A new alliance has formed between the two surgeons. And just in time for April Fool's day, which happened to be tomorrow. Seattle Grace Hospital, be warned!
