Chapter 1

"Oi hands off!" Ianto slapped Jack's hand away from his chips. Jack pouted. "That pout won't work Jack. If you were that hungry you should have got an extra large portion."

"I thought you would be happy to share!" Jack protested.

Ianto rolled his eyes and handed the rest of the chips to Jack. "I was getting full anyway so knock yourself out."

Jack frowned. "Ianto what's wrong? You normally wolf down fish and chips, especially when we have some rare free time like this together."

Ianto sighed and stood up from the bench they were sitting on. He stretched and went to lean on the railings overlooking the bay. It was early evening and quiet by the tourist office. It had been a busy week and the rift was finally giving them a break. He suddenly felt Jack's hand on his shoulder, chips left abandoned on the bench.

"My sister has been on the phone."

"Ah" Jack said, understanding Ianto's mood. "And?"

Ianto turned to look at him. "And she is demanding that I go over this weekend as she wants to set me up with one of her friends. She also wants to catch up and can't understand why I work on a Sunday. Nagging about feeding me up and looking for a better job with normal hours closer to where she lives. It's never ending." He took a deep breath. "I love Rhiannon, but we're not close and I wish she would butt out of my business!"

"I know it's frustrating but she is your sister, she loves you and wants the best for you."

"There are times I wish I could tell her what I really do. Might stop going on about getting a 9-5 office job then" Ianto laughed.

Jack put his arm round Ianto's shoulders. "Ianto Jones. Hero and saviour of mankind!"

Ianto lay his head on Jack's shoulder. "And I definitely don't want to go out with one of her friends!"

Jack smirked. "I can think of a few things we could do with a third person." He laughed at Ianto's expression. "Joking!"

Ianto narrowed his eyes. "I don't share."

Jack laughed and pulled Ianto in for a kiss. He groaned as his comm started beeping. Ianto pulled away with a frustrated sigh.

"Say that again Tosh? A rift alert outside the tourist office?"

Ianto immediately went on alert, looking around for any sign of a visitor or object appearing. Jack was also looking around.

"Stay sharp" he murmured to Ianto.

They walked about 100 metres when there was a bright flash of light. A vertical opening appeared around Jack. Ianto immediately grabbed Jack's hand and held on for dear life. The rift was pulling Jack.

"Hold on Jack!" he yelled.

Jack tried pulling himself free but he couldn't. He saw golden tendrils from the rift opening snake down his arm toward Ianto's hand.

"Ianto let go!" he yelled.

"No!"

"Let go! That's an order!"

"I'm not letting you go Jack!"

The golden tendrils started to wrap around Ianto's wrist. He could feel Ianto slowly being pulled into the opening with him.

"Let go Ianto!"

Ianto shook his head. Jack could see him gritting his teeth, fighting with all of his strength. He knew what he had to do. He pulled Ianto slightly toward him, then pushed him away with all of his strength. Ianto's hand slipped out of his as he went flying backwards. The last thing he saw was a look of horror on Ianto's face before there was a flash and he was gone.

A/N: I hope you've enjoyed the beginning of my new fic. This fic is completed so there shouldn't be a long wait between chapters. I'll probably post every few days or so. Dates will be written so it will be clear where and when Jack is as the story goes on. There will be a few liberties with the dates but I think the years are as accurate as I can make them. Enjoy! :-)
