As heroes of the rebellion Leia, Han and Luke had been invited to attend a celebration. They showed up battle weary and jubilant, in newly acquired clean comfortable clothes. They were the finest Luke had ever worn.
"What's that?" Luke stage whispered to Leia. They were standing next to a large table that was overflowing with food. There were many platters of various meats and cheeses, crackers and jams. Behind them rose tiered displays of greens, and the most colorful kinds of decorations. He had already started sampling the meat.
Leia looked at him like he'd lost his head. She reached over and picked up one of the little deep purple balls. "This?"
"Yeah."
"It's a grape." She said, as if that word meant anything to him. His confusion was apparent through the force. "You eat it."
She popped it into her mouth chewed quickly. Luke watched her face and searched for any indication that it was actually a table decoration and that she swallowed it to make him uncomfortable. It seemed legit, but his sister could be fooling him for all he knew.
"I've never seen anything like that before." He said carefully, still waiting for her façade to drop. He knew she could make a point through pure stubbornness if needed. It wouldn't surprise him.
"Try it." She prompted and handed him one. "It's good, I promise."
He took it with caution and looked at if closely. When he squeezed it the grape yielded slightly under the pressure, but otherwise remained solid. Crisp. There was some condensation on the skin, and when he rolled it between his fingers the color deepened further, glistening in the light.
Well, he was no coward. After a moment's hesitation he popped it his mouth and bit down.
Cool, wet, sugary juices rapidly spread through his mouth and he didn't know how to react. The rush was intense, and all he could do was chew slowly and swallow. He felt tears rise to his eyes. He blinked twice to clear them, but otherwise stood still, frozen in time. He would remember this moment for the rest of his life.
"Luke?" Leia looked worried. "You alright?"
He didn't respond. No words could accurately pinpoint what he was feeling in that moment. He elected to project his emotions through the force instead, showing her a glimpse of the indescribable flow of emotion he was going through.
Without a word she handed him a small cluster of grapes. He ate another one, this one more slowly than the first. The thin skin burst so easily at the pressure, he could hardly believe it. Growing up on Tatooine had given him the impression that all fruit was the same. In hindsight all fruit probably didn't have need of thick skinned shells that were so durable that they could withstand any drought.
Leia gave him a moment to process him emotions. She gave him a supportive clap on the shoulder and walked off into a sea of people.
Hours later when the celebration was nearing its end, Leia and Han found him still by the table. On the table they could see a little heap of well plucked twigs where the once impressive display had stood.
….
Luke felt a little bit embarrassed when Leia had to explain to Han that he hadn't had fruit before. No matter how much he protested that there were fruit on Tatooine (they were just different), neither Leia nor Han really wanted to let it go. "It's a travesty" Han had exclaimed in fake abhorrence, but he still took the time to grab Luke the next day and bring him to the market. He was nice like that.
"Alright, kid, if you were impressed by grapes you should try this." Han led Luke through a marketplace filled to the brim with fresh produce. He plucked an orange form the stand, flipped the owner a coin, and gave him a wink.
"This is an orange. It's great as it is but mostly people drink the juice." he peeled it expertly and gave Luke a slice. "There are some seeds sometimes, you have officially been warned."
Han took the first bite, and after a moment's hesitation Luke did the same. Juice dripped down his chin and he did his best to control it. This fruit was closer to the hubba gourds on tatooine. But where the hubba was acid sour, the orange was refreshing and clear. The flesh gave way easily when he bit into it. He hadn't known what to expect really. Hubba gourds were stringy, usually, and tough to chew. A necessity when water storages were low. The orange in comparison was sweet and sour at the same time, and absolutely overflowing with flavor.
"This is incredible." Luke stated after his first bite. He looked at the fruit in wonder. "I never thought something like this existed. I wouldn't know where to start with imagination like that."
"Well, it's real alright." Han laughed.
They finished the orange quietly, and then went on to browse the market. Han made the proposition to get a bit of everything and then share it with Leia. Luke thought it was a brilliant idea, not only because he wasn't sure how many whole fruits he could eat by himself before he was full, but he also planned to try everything. He wasn't sure if he'd ever been so excited for anything ever before.
Han had probably intended to do this before they went out, since the basket Luke carried was flat bottomed and just perfect for carrying delicate fruit. Luke didn't mind carrying it and busied himself with taking in the market while Han handed fruit after fruit to him to carry.
Leia was already home when they got back. Luke was told to wait while they washed and cut the fruit. He didn't mind the excuse to sit down on a low sofa and talk about his day with R2. Beeps of varied intensity filled the space and a calm settled over them. Han and Leia laughed about something in the kitchen, followed by Leia's delighted voice saying "you didn't!" in a way that confirmed that Han had indeed done that, and probably deliberately. Luke was glad they had each other.
He might have drifted off a little while waiting, but he just as soon woke up to the clunk of a heavy plate startled him.
They explained which fruit was what and how to eat it. One by one they went through the different ones. Luke learned a whole lot of new words. Mango, strawberry, kiwi, pineapple, plum, apple, fig, blackberry, passionfruit, pear, and pomegranate were added to his vocabulary in the span of twenty minutes. They kept one fruit off the list though, claiming it was a surprise for later.
Luke thought that they could hardly surprise him any more than they already had, but he didn't push it. The last mystery fruit looked like an orange but also not like an orange. The skin was lighter in color and the flesh a dark red. Luke didn't know enough about oranges to have an opinion on how oranges should look.
As with the other fruits, Leia and Han took the lead before Luke dared try it. Leia ate hers easily, smacking loudly as if it was the best thing in the world. Han ate his quickly and gave Luke a smile he probably thought looked reassuring.
Well, they hadn't led him astray yet!
Like with the orange from earlier, Luke took a large bite, expecting it to be similar.
He was wrong.
The bitterness took him by surprise and he felt his mouth and throat clench in a way he hadn't since he took his first sip of home brewed double distilled moonshine. Only that time he had known what he was about to do. Now he coughed helplessly while Leia started laughing. Luke gave Han a betrayed and hurt look, trying to convey the depths of his treachery. Han shrugged slightly and then started snickering as well.
"What is that?" Luke said in between coughs. Somehow he had managed to choke on his own spit as well. His throat felt raw and his eyes watered slightly. "I need to know so I can avoid it."
"Sorry Luke." Leia said apologetically after calming down. "We just had to. And we only had one try, you'd probably try every fruit in the galaxy next, and we wanted to see your face."
"It's called a grapefruit." Han supplied helpfully, already eating something else to replace the bitter twang. "And Leia eats them willingly."
Luke looked between the sweet grapes on the plate and the horrible no good bitter excuse of a fruit that was called grapefruit. Back and forth, again and again.
"I'll have to remember that." He mumbled to himself, already planning to head back to the market the next day.
