Chapter 1

It was a normal day. Like all the others. Melody was walking around the small town her parents dubbed their second home. They'd only had this home for 2 years. Melody hated it at first. Thought that it was a waste of time having a second home in this wasteland. But she had come to enjoy it once she made some friends. They weren't the typical people she had back at her main home. These people were darker and trouble makers. Made her time there more fun.

When she wasn't with them, she was singing. That's what she really loved. Especially opera. She loved the feel in my throat when her soprano voice hit a high note. Or how she could change the pitch and tone. Her friends here were okay with it. They were more into screamo and metal. Not her cup of tea but it made them happy.

Her best friend was a girl named Stephanie. She was pretty normal. She had black hair and wore more eyeliner than Melody thought a person could but her soul was gentle. Melody and Stephanie became friends one night when they both attended this youth thing.

Flashback

Melody had made friends with some of the boys. It's kind of hard to blend in when you're a platinum blonde with pink clothes in a town where the youth wear nothing but black.

They were separately watching the boys skateboard and do tricks. One of the guys named Trevor asked Melody if she wanted to try. She had attempted skateboarding as a kid and failed. But she thought she would try it again. As she got on the skateboard, she wobbled some. That's when Stephanie came over and gave Melody some tips.

When she decided she had enough, Melody got off the skateboard and went to some benches. That's when Stephanie came over.

"You know, we don't see many blondes come around here" she said

"Yeah, well blonde wasn't my first choice in hair color. It's already bad enough I'm in this stupid town. I can't even fit in."

"Why don't you just dye your hair? The rest of us have."

"I'm pretty sure my mom would kill me if I dyed my hair anything other than blonde. She has a weird obsession with the color."

Stephanie started to laugh. "Well if you ever change your mind, we can always turn that golden hair into something way cooler."

"Maybe one day, I'll take you up on that offer."

"My names Stephanie, by the way. What's yours?"

"I'm Melody."

"That's a cool name. Haven't heard that one before."

"Thanks."

They talked the rest of the night about our interests and dreams. Melody told her about how she wants to be a famous singer and Stephanie told Melody about how she wants to be a painter. They laughed and giggled many times throughout the night over different things until it was time for them to go. They exchanged numbers and went their separate ways home. But after that, they texted and hung out all the time when Melody was in town. She was one of 3 girls in Melodys teen years that she could trust.

"Yo Melody, you awake in there?"

Melody jolted out of her thoughts and looked at Stephanie. "I'm good. I'm sorry, what were you saying?"

"I was asking if you wanted to hang out at the park tonight with Trevor and the guys?"

"Oh yeah. That sounds good. What time?"

"Probably around midnight."

"Okay. Might be a little late. Gotta wait for my parents to go to bed before I can dip. You know how they are."

"Well let me know if you need an escort. I'm sure Trevor would love to walk you to the park." She giggled. Melody lightly slapped her.

"Oh come on, you know it's not like that."

"That's not what I heard. I heard you guys have been having your own little meetups."

Melody blushed. " I was hoping no one knew about that. "

Melody had met Trevor her second week in town. He had your typical bad boy look. Top to bottom black. Dark brown long hair. His facial features were sharp and the second Melody saw him, she had an immediate school girl crush on him. He had been hanging out with a couple girls Melody had just met. They were trouble makers and their short term friendship did not last long.

Flashback

"Hey, I'm Trevor. You're the new girl right?"

"Yeah, that's me." Melody looks down for a second in embarrassment. "I'm Melody."

"That's an unusual name."

"Yeah, I get that a lot."

"So what brings you to this shithole? You definitely don't seem like you want to be here."

"Is it that obvious?"

"Well considering you're hanging out with these two yet still wearing a pink dress tells me that wherever you're from, the people are preppy and most likely stuck up."

She looked at him perplexed. "You clearly assume how I'm dressed is how I want to be dressed. I just want to blend in. But that's not how my mom sees it. I'm not allowed to be who I want on the exterior."

"That sounds terrible."

"Oh it is. I didn't even want to be here. And I mean I'm not here all the time but even these last two weeks have sucked. There's nothing to do here and I miss my friends back home."

"Well sweetheart, that's because you're not looking at things the right way. You're only out here at daytime. You should check things out at night. It's a much better scene."

"That doesn't sound like a great idea. Isn't that how girls like me get kidnapped and murdered?"

He started to laugh. His voice was deep and his laugh was contagious. "Trust me, there's not much going on in this town. You'll be fine. Just stay to the side streets so the cops don't see you. We have a curfew here. Wouldn't want mommy and daddy to find out, would you?"

"I'm sorry? Did you say there's a curfew? Where the hell did my parents bring us? This must be the lamest town around."

He started to laugh again. "That's why it's more fun at night time." He winked at Melody and for a second she lost my breath. "Maybe I'll see you later tonight?"

"Maybe."

"Let me give you my number in case you do. That way you can come find me" he winked again.

"So are you going to meet up with us?" Stephanie asked. Her eyes looking hopeful.

"Yeah I'll try. I can't promise anything but I'll see what I can do." Melody looked away from her ahead on the trail we were walking on. Up ahead she saw a guy looking at her. As they got closer, she saw his piercing green eyes staring at her. They kept eye contact until they were a few feet away from one another. It was like Melody was stuck in a trance with this person. Something just felt familiar. As if they'd known each other forever. She broke out of my trance.

"... and I mean if you really like Trevor, maybe I can get you guys alone."

"What?"

"Oh come on, you know what."

Melody looked back behind her to where the man had been but he was gone. How did he disappear so fast.

"I'm so sorry Sarah, but I think I have to go."

"Already? But it's only 2. You still have plenty of time before you need to be home."

"Yeah but I just remembered I need to do something." Melody started turning around and walking away. "I'll text you later and let you know if I can come out or not."

Sarah sighed and shook her head as she continued down the trail.
