Creator of Magic: I totally agree, Diana was left very incomplete. In the original series, Diana literally marries and becomes a housewife right after school. I like that she wants a career in this series, but I feel like she won't find the same happiness she would if she was with someone who loves her. I always thought it was strange how things ended between her and Jerry. She seemed to enjoy the adventure and family and seemed to care for Jerry. She really flipped a switch and it just never made sense to me. I hope you'll be surprised how Diana will end up.
Thank you!
Over the next couple of days, the girls continued to have their lunch in the courtyard. Diana watched Fred pass by on the sidewalk every time. Something about him interested her. Maybe it was because he wasn't a tall, handsome, stranger, but a tall, handsome, childhood friend. After two days, he waved to her and continue on. Those two seconds seemed to be the highlight of her day. It would be harder to pursue someone she had never met before. Maybe it was a bad thing? But Diana didn't know much about love.
Diana thought again of Jerry. It was such a mistake to her. She wasn't actually interested in him. Was she? She couldn't truly remember at this point. Diana had to admit she loved the romance part, but talking to him was a struggle. They were completely different breeds- or that's what her mother told her. She could always hear this voice in her mind telling her she was too good for him smarts-wise. It wasn't the easiest breakup, but Diana thought it was the right thing. That was the one good thing about getting out of Avonlea. She wouldn't have to feel bad when she saw his face.
Today was probably one of the last days she and the girls would sit outside to eat. The temperatures were dropping down very low and getting close to the freezing point. The sun kept Diana warmer under her shall. Her feet stuck out over the blanket on the ground. the grass was no longer flimsy but frozen in place. She dug her heels around, but the blades hardly moved.
The girls' chatter was a distant echo to her. She was only focused on her favorite two seconds. This time she was hoping for more than two seconds today. When she saw him coming, she got up to her feet and smoothed her blue dress. "Uh-oh," Josie said down on the ground. "She's going to do it."
"What do you mean?" Ruby was playing dumb.
"She's been staring at Fred every day since her hat flew away," Jane explained. The girls giggled, except Anne.
"Diana," she called before Diana took a step forward. She turned to Anne and looked into her beautiful blue eyes. They were serious. "Don't be afraid to make the first move. You may regret it if you don't." Diana smiled and nodded. Her feet lead her to the sidewalk where she waited for Fred. When their eyes connected, he smiled.
"Good afternoon," he slowed his walk.
"Afternoon," Diana nodded her head.
"Would you like to take a walk to the library with me?" He asked after a moment of silence.
"I would be delighted. Just let me get my things." She went back to the blanket. When she first turned, all she saw were staring eyes. Then, they pretended to be in deep conversation. As she got her lunch basket, Diana shot them a thumbs up. The girls giggled when she went back with Fred. They strolled together silently until Diana knew they were out of earshot of the girls. "So what's your major?"
"I'm going into banking," Fred seemed nervous. "I was hoping to help do the mortgages and other stuff like that in town. You?"
"I'm just here for generals," Diana looked down at her lunch basket.
"Doesn't a pretty girl like you belong in a France finishing school?" Diana could feel her cheeks heat up. Pretty Girl.
"I didn't want to go there," Diana explained. "I wanted a regular education. I don't want to be taught how to be a lady."
"You are already a lady," Fred pointed out. "What would finishing school do for you?"
"Teach me to balance a book on my head," Diana recalled the time her mother had tried to teach them that. It didn't work very well with Minnie May. Fred laughed at this. She liked the sound of it. "Forgive me, but didn't you used to be scrawny?"
He chuckled. "I guess you could say that. I kinda hid in the back of the class, I was never the main player for anything. But some farm work over the summer made me fill out and get some muscles on these bones. Numbers are more of my thing anyway."
"I'm sure you'll do great when it comes to your career then," Diana saw that they were getting closer together. She stepped away from him and looked up. they weren't far from the library steps. "I suppose I should let you know. I won't see you around anymore."
"Really? Why?"
"Because it's getting colder," she shrugged as they reached the steps, "I won't be eating outside anymore."
"That doesn't mean I won't see you around," Fred shook his head. "I was actually going to ask if you would have tea with me sometime. I was told that there's a lovely place here in Charlottetown."
"I know that place," Diana nodded, "It is really good. I should show you around town. I've been here many times."
"So, is that a yes?" Diana couldn't believe the rush she was feeling. Her corset felt a little tighter as he asked this question. She thought about her schedule. She would have enough time for it.
"Yes," she smiled. "How about this Saturday?"
"Sounds perfect," Fred grinned. "How about tomorrow we'll meet here at this time and talk about the details?" Diana nodded. He said a short goodbye, leaving Diana by the stairs. Once he went inside the library, Diana clutched her stomach. She couldn't believe what just happened. This could possibly be her first real courtship. At least now she could breathe again.
"Diana!" Anne's voice called. She spotted the redhead running towards her. The other girls were speed walking their way over. "What happened?!"
"He asked me to tea!" Diana exclaimed. Anne threw her arms around her. Diana hugged back just as the other four arrived.
"I'm guessing it went well then," Tillie smiled brightly.
"Oh! I'm so excited!" Ruby was thrilled. "We can go on official double dates! Of course, I would do that with Anne, except Gilbert probably won't ever have time to visit. But oh Diana I'm so excited for you." The gushing continued on, but Diana didn't listen. She just looked at Anne's white face. Her expression was filled with sadness but then melted into no expression at all. She closed her eyes for a moment before opening them to see Diana.
The raven-haired girl reach forward and grabbed her bosom friend's hand. Anne grinned and conquered her wave of despair.
It was finally the day of Diana's first official date. She was so nervous. Anne had spent the day with her getting ready. The other girls had popped in and out to give opinions. Now it was finally time to get ready. Diana had decided on her simple dark blue dress with minimal lace. She didn't want to seem too fancy. Her hair would be tied up into a bun. She ordered Anne to loosen her corset so she could have a little breathing room.
Lily the deaf maid had come in when Diana was loosening her curls from the tied fabrics. Anne was fussing around in her jewelry box but turned to see Lily. "Oh! I've been reading a book on sign language." She began to do certain hand motions as Diana watched through the mirror.
"What did you say?" Diana asked.
"If she had brought the cleaner," Anne watched as Lily held up a bottle. "Thank you!" Anne took it from her. Luckily, Lily was able to read lips, so she could communicate with all the girls. She opened the door for Ruby and Tillie to come in. They both looked so excited. Lily then walked out of the room with a grin on her face. "Isn't that extraordinary?" Anne sighed."How she can't hear but can read lips perfectly. I couldn't imagine if I could never hear the birds chirping on the dearest snow queen in the morning."
"What have you got there?" Ruby asked as she followed Anne over to Diana's vanity.
"Cleaner for Diana's necklace and brooch." Anne set down the cleaner and dabbed a cloth into it. She began to clean Diana's half of the heart necklace.
"I don't have a brooch on," Diana was now styling her hair.
"I'm letting you wear Marilla's."
"What!" Tillie exclaimed, "Isn't that the one she sent you back over?"
"Yes, and I think it would go lovely with Diana's shall."
"Oh, Anne! I can't." Diana shook her head.
"It's not like you'll have it for long. I trust you'll take good care of it for a few hours." Diana agreed and stood up. Ruby wrapped a white shall around Diana. Anne clipped the brooch onto it.
"I think you're ready," Anne smiled brightly.
"Oh, I'm so nervous," Diana clutched her heart necklace as Tillie clipped it around her neck.
"You'll be great," Tillie encouraged.
"It's not that hard. Simply let him bring up a topic then you can take it from there," Ruby shrugged.
"Or bring up your own topic. It's only Fred. We all went to school together," Anne pinned on Diana's hat. "I think the best way to start a relationship is by being yourself."
Suddenly, Jane and Josie both ran into the room. "He's coming up the steps!" Jane said excitedly. Diana felt her corset tightening. The doorbell had been rung. They all squealed. Diana was ushered by the girls to the door. Lily had already answered it.
"I'm here for-" he was cut off at the sight of her. "Diana," he finished with a breathy voice. Everyone pushed her forward towards the door. Lily grinned and opened the door wider for Diana. Fred held out his hand for her to step down. She took it and did so.
"Lily," Diana turned around. "Tell Mrs. Blackmore I'll be back for supper." Lily nodded and began to close the door.
"Have fun!" Jane called.
"But not too much fun!" Tillie managed to say before the door closed. Diana could hear the muffled laughs from the house. Her cheeks were getting red with embarrassment.
"Please excuse them," Diana said as they began to stroll towards town. "I love them all dearly but sometimes they can be such a pain."
"I'm used to it," Fred shrugged a little.
"I keep forgetting you were in our class," Diana shook her head. They continued to walk to the tea shop in Charlottetown. Fred acted like a gentleman and held the door for her as well as pulling out her chair. So far, Diana was impressed.
They chatted for a few hours about their summer. Diana told him about her journey to Queens. "It was truly one of the most exciting things of my life," Diana recalled. She felt such satisfaction that she out ruled her parents. She smiled as she looked to Fred, who was looking at himself in a spoon.
"Very exciting," he said in a hollow voice. Diana remembered her mother telling her about talking too much. It makes a guy less interested. She needed to be polite. It was out of her place anyway. She should have asked him more about himself. He told her about the farm he lived on and what inspired him to go into banking.
"I think I just wanted an escape more than anything," Fred sipped on his tea. "Farming never really interested me."
"So you're a little bit of a rebel," Diana dropped a sugar cube into her drink. "I admire that."
"You're a bit of a rebel yourself. Coming to college despite your mother's actions," Fred placed his hand on hers. " I guess that's a similarity between us." Her lips curved into a smile to match his grin. Small butterflies were fluttering in her chest. There were several seconds where they just looked at each other without saying anything. Diana was taking in every feature of his face and committing it to memory.
After a wonderful afternoon, Diana was about due for supper. They strolled back to the house. On the porch, they stood there for a while, staring. "Well," Fred broke the silence, "I had a wonderful time."
"I as well," Diana smiled.
"Would you like to do this again sometime?"
"Definitely."
"Great," Fred took her gloved hand in his and kissed the top of it. Diana tried her best to conceal her blush. "Goodnight."
"Goodnight." Diana watched him walk off into the sunset and out of sight. She sighed before turning to the door. She couldn't have been any happier. When she reached for the door handle and stepped forward, the door jerked right open. Knocking Diana back by surprise, she lost her balance on her heal. She was about to fall back when a hand grabbed hers and another grabbed her waist.
Diana was grateful for her hero. She assumed it was Anne or another girl, but she was mistaken. "Thank you for saving me from my fall." She managed to say as she was brought into the house. She stumbled a little, and the hands steadied her again. When her eyes focused on the face of her savior, she saw the concerned eyes of Jerry.
