Curristan walked slowly through the packed shelves of alien technology that Torchwood had collected. She could see that there was so much junk and some salvageable pieces. In her mind she was also wondering something. There had been a tickle in the back of her mind ever since she had landed, with a second presence now being felt even closer than the one she had sensed earlier.
"Found anything you like?" came Jack's voice from somewhere behind her. "Oh also I may have someone that you know here with us. I will just go and get her."
His footsteps receeded allowing Curristan to continue looking. An object caught her eye and immediately she moved towards it before picking it up.
'Well this looks like something. It seems like a Salcasian Sonic Amplifier. I could find a use for this..'
She felt the presence in her mind getting closer and she realised she was definitely sensing a fellow Time Lord or Lady. She turned just as Jack reappeared with a woman with brown hair and features which seemed eerily familiar. Then it came to her, the woman had Romana's and what looked like the Eighth Doctor's features which would make her..
"Arcadia is that you?"
That brought the woman to a sudden stop. "How the hell do you know who I am?" came the confused and haughty retort, her features twisted with incomprehension.
Raising an eyebrow she noticed Jack bent over and laughing to her left. "Well you are definitely Romana's and the Doctors daughter" she noted.
That brought even more confusion to Arcadia's face. "Wait you know my parents? How in Rassilon do you know them?"
Reaching to her neck she unclasped the perception filter from her coat lapel which would allow Arcadia to feel her presence as a Time Lady. The reaction that she got was in her mind absolutely perfect.
Arcadia's eyes went wide with realisation as she felt Curristan in her mind and words just failed her. All she could do was make this strange gurgling noise which prompted Jack to suddenly declare "Well thats the quietest she has been since she arrived here. Well done you should show me hows it's done sometime."
That comment broke Arcadia out of her shock and she said in a stunned voice "You are a Time Lady...seriously?"
"Yup I am and both your parent's friend. I know them both well and I have seen your father recently, but your mother I havent seen for a while." Privately she realised she couldn't really say that Romana was missing and they didn't know where she was.
Curristan then added "Well its good to see that you made it somewhere safe, though it seems that you need some instruction if you are to get rid of your haughtiness and behaviour that has no real purpose out in the real universe."
Arcadia felt like she had been slapped. Sudddenly without warning she ran to get the spare vortex manipulator she had rigged on a desk nearby. Placing it on her right wrist he made a mocking salute before pressing a button. The manipulator didnt react except to emit a bright flash and enveloping Arcadia in a puff of smoke. Everyone else looked over to see Curristan holding out her sonic screwdriver and a smug look on her face.
Arcadia emerged from the smoke with a wounded puppy look as she realised that she hadn't gone anywhere. It turned to frustration when she saw Curristan pointing a sonic screwdriver at her direction.
"Dammit why didn't I factor in that you would have a screwdriver too. I guess I will try this TARDIS then."
She walked into the open door and then came out a few seconds later in a frustrated rage. "Why the hell did that not work?"
Curristan smirked. "Isomorphic controls to prevent theft. I would never let my TARDIS fall into anyone's hands."
Arcadia visibly began to relax as she realised that her usual behaviour wasn't going to get her anywhere. This Time Lady eerily reminded her of her mother and she knew her, so she should really get on her side as some stories about her parents would be great to hear. So she decided to swallow her pride.
"Erm, can I ask you about my parents? I hope you can tell me some stories."
Curristan's face stretched into a smile. "Yes of course. But first, what are you doing here on Earth? Did Romana put you here?"
Jack decided to explain. "Well she was at UNIT as a punishment but she decided that she was too bored there and Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart decided to send her on to us. Now you are here what will you do?"
Curristan considered for a moment as she thought about what she could do to help. 'I suppose I could help out and take her on for a while? I may be able to take her back to Romana and also give her experience of the universe...'
Out loud she decided to voice her plan. "I think I will take Arcadia with me and allow her a chance to see the universe, plus even bring her back to her mother if I can find her. I am sure we will but it may take some time, if that is okay with you Arcadia?"
Arcadia's face for the first time since Curristan arrived brightened up and she did an enthusiastic nod. "Thank you! I will just go and get my things." She turned quickly and literally skipped out of the room.
Laughing Jack turned to Curristan. "Nice idea, take her off our hands and take on the burden of looking after her. Are you sure you can do it?"
Laughing Curristan nodded. "If I can inflitrate Dalek held planets I think one young teenage like Time Lady is easy. How is Torchwood doing these days?"
"Torchwood is going well, we have got extra funding from the Defence Minister Harold Saxon which was a surprise boost. It isn't cheap maintaining a facility of this size and it's operations."
Nodding thoughtfully Curristan turned and studied a nearby piece of equipment, turning back as she heard Arcadia's rushed footsteps.
Arcadia smiled brightly as she re-entered the room, dropping a small backpack beside the TARDIS. "I don't have much stuff but I am sure that I could need it in the future."
"I agree, now go and make yourself at home in one of the rooms in the TARDIS, I am sure you can find a suitable one."
"Thank you again!" Turning to Jack and the others she waved. "Goodbye all of you and sorry if I caused trouble." Jack chuckled before shaking his head. "No you were alright, I just think you need someone like you to keep you occupied. Arcadia nodded, before slipping into the TARDIS.
"She is going to be a handful" Curristan mused. "Well Jack it's time that I am off and leave you all to your work. I am sure to come back and visit at some point."
"Fair enough, good luck out there and with her, haha."
"Thanks, I will definitely need all the luck I can get..." Curristan shook her head in amusement before entering the TARDIS herself.
As she set the TARDIS to take off Curristan thought about the Doctor and Romana and the responsibility she had just taken on. 'I will do my best to keep her safe, plus teach her what she needs to know. She has a lot to learn.'
