Save Me
Silence. Lexie was surrounded by complete silence while lying on the ground. It's not that she couldn't hear; she could hear just fine. But everyone had left her. Mark had promised that he would be right there, but he wasn't. Lexie didn't hear any footsteps near her, any twigs cracking, and certainly not any voices. Panic started to set in deep into her chest, and she could feel her breathing pick up rapidly. Lexie knew, though she was wrong, that she was beginning to succumb to her injuries. Her pulse was weakening, her breathing was speeding up, her internal bleeding was continuing, and she couldn't feel her legs. Running her fingers through her matted hair, Lexie allowed herself to close her eyes, just for a moment.
She felt completely useless. All she could do was lay there, trapped under the back part of the plane. Derek was missing. Arizona was hurt, though she didn't know how bad the blonde's injuries were. She hoped that Arizona was doing better than she was. Lexie didn't even know if Cristina, Meredith, or Mark had injuries, except for excruciating scream she heard come from Cristina. She must have dislocated something Lexie thought. Lexie blinked her eyes open, staring up at underside of the plane. She was truly grateful that Mark, Cristina, and Meredith were doing what they could to help her. Although Meredith left to go and search for Derek, she had provided Lexie comfort. Lexie and Meredith had a strained relationship at the beginning, but at some point, that changed. Perhaps it was when she and Mark's relationship went public. Or maybe it was when the shooting happened. Lexie didn't know, but what she did know was that at some point, their relationship changed for the better. There wasn't ever a point that she explicitly told Meredith that she was a good sister to her. Lexie knew that Meredith struggled with forming a bond with her at the beginning, and she stated that she didn't know how to be a sister. She did, though, Lexie thought. Being able to see Meredith and tell her that put relief on Lexie. If she were to die, at least she was able to tell her sister that she was thankful for her.
For the first time since she awoke, Lexie craned her head to her left, noticing that her left arm was still connected. She let out a sigh of relief. If she made it out of this situation alive, at least she would have two arms. Whether or not she would need surgery or if they would both work correctly was another question altogether. Callie was an excellent orthopedic surgeon, so even if her arms or hands needed surgery, she had confidence that Callie would be able to get them to the point needed where she would be able to perform surgery again. Lexie glanced down toward her feet but she couldn't see them. Her pelvis was crushed, and she could not see anything below. Her scrub top was filled with dried blood. Panic set into Lexie again at the thought of being trapped under the rubble. She wanted more than anything to be free and able to at least sit up. "Mark!" Lexie screamed as loud as she could, swallowing thickly once she called out his name. The last thing she needed was to get sick all over herself while immobile.
Cristina and Mark had split up once Mark had set her arm. They were in search of anything that could help them get Lexie out from the debris covering her. They thought if they could find a makeshift board to slide under her, and then find something to lift the plane slightly, they may be able to slide her out. Mark didn't go far from where Lexie was laying, not wanting to be far from her in case she needed him.
Mark was relieved that he was semi able to tell Lexie how he felt. He desperately wanted to tell Lexie that he loved her, but he didn't want her to think that he was just saying it because of the situation that they were in. While that wasn't the case at all, he never wanted her to think that it was. Letting her know that he wanted a future with her was a perfect middle ground in Mark's mind. That would allow Lexie to know that he wanted to be with her forever, but not allow her enough room to argue with him.
Mark located a large piece of birch wood that he would be able to slide under Lexie. It wasn't long enough to go under her entire body, but should be long enough that he and Cristina could pull Lexie out with it. Mark grabbed the piece of wood and walked further into the trees to look for something he could hoist the plane up with without worrying about it falling back down on Lexie. Right as he found a long, sturdy piece of wood, Mark heard Lexie scream his name. Mark's heart dropped and he quickly took off running back toward Lexie, gripping the piece of birch wood. "Lexie?!" He called breathlessly, being back by her side in under a minute. Mark dropped the piece of wood and lied flat on his stomach. Relief washed over him once he saw Lexie was okay. It didn't look like the plane moved and crushed her any more.
"I-I didn't know where you went. It was so quiet," she whispered, a small sob leaving her lips. Mark's hand reached out toward her face, wiping away the few stray tears. He then grabbed her hand, rubbing soothing circles across the back of it.
"I wasn't far away. I was just looking for something to help get you out. I'm sorry, babe," Mark apologized, licking his lips. He turned his head to look at the oxygen dial, noting that there was plenty of oxygen left at this point. "How are you feeling? Can you drink some more water?" Mark questioned, reaching with his free hand for the bottle of water.
"I'm okay. I can't feel my legs which worries me, but I'm not in much pain which I'm grateful for," she said with a small smile. Her heart leaped when he called her babe, something he used to do all the time in the confines of their home. "The oxygen has helped a lot," she added, squeezing Mark's hand. She wasn't able to do that movement before, so she hoped her increased strength provided him with some comfort. Lexie noticed Mark grabbing the water before her answer as to if she could drink some. She opened her mouth, a silent confirmation that she could drink some more. She took a few small sips, knowing that hydrating was vital to her survival. "Thank you... Listen, Mark, about earlier," she started, her eyes glossing over with emotion.
"Lex, no," Mark interrupted, snaking his other arm toward her tummy once he set the bottle down. He wanted to be as close to her as he could be considering he was physically unable to hold her. "I meant what I said. I want a life with you. I've always wanted a life with you. I told you before that you could have a husband. I meant it. I want a family with you, I want a life with you, a future with you. You're it for me, Lex. I love you with my whole heart," Mark confessed, his eyes never leaving hers. Tears sprang to Lexie's eyes, a whimper escaping from her throat.
"That's all I've ever wanted... I-I know that I wasn't ready to be a mom before, but you're worth it," she acknowledged, biting down on her lip. "W-What about Julia?" Lexie asked, a frown forming on her face. While she wanted Mark more than anything, she did not want him to be dubbed a cheater, and she certainly didn't want to be looked at as a home wrecker.
"I was going to end thing this morning, but she was already gone. My plan was to let her know as soon as we got home from Boise," Mark explained, his eyes conveying honestly. Lexie nodded, letting out a sniffle.
"Okay... I just, I don't want you to regret this or leaving her," Lexie stated, moving one hand up to brush a piece of hair back from her eyes.
"I would never regret anything with you, Lex. What we're in right now is an impossible situation, something no one should ever go through. If she can't understand that, then she's not the person I thought she was," Mark replied, tracing endless patterns on her palm. "I think that she knows deep down that it's always been you. I tried to move on with her, but one look at you and I was back under your spell. She… She knows that if you needed me, I would drop everything to be there for you."
"Mark... please don't let me die," Lexie sobbed, her breathing speeding up. Hearing Mark say those words were what Lexie was waiting for the last couple of days.
"Baby, shhh," he shushed, swapping his hands that was holding hers. With his now free hand, he raked his fingers through her hair. "I'm not going to let you. We are going to get you out of here. Cristina will be back soon and we will get you out," he soothed, stroking her hair. Ever since Lexie had told him that she liked her hair being stroked when she didn't feel well, Mark had taken up the habit. Mark and Lexie stayed like this for several seconds before they heard footsteps coming their way.
"Is Lexie...," Meredith trailed off, looking at Mark expectantly. He didn't see her, though, keeping his eyes focused on the woman he loved.
"She's okay. She said the oxygen helped," Mark replied, offering Lexie a smile. Wow, he truly did love this woman. He needed her to make it out alive.
"Thank god," said a male's voice. Mark and Lexie's eyes widened, both staring at each other in surprise.
"Derek," Mark replied, letting go of Lexie to stand up. He wanted to make sure that he wasn't just hearing things. He needed to make sure his friend was okay. Mark reached out for Derek, pulling him into a hug. "I'm so glad you're okay," he said as he released him. "Where were you? What happened?"
"I woke up face down on the ground, had no idea where I was. I started walking, looking for someone but couldn't find anyone. Meredith finally found me," he explained, pulling his wife against him. "What can we do to get Lexie free?" He asked, concerned for his sister. Even though Lexie and Meredith had a rocky relationship to begin with, Derek had always thought of Lexie as family. She was a kind, loving girl that he always wanted to protect like he would his own sisters.
"There was a long branch that way about one hundred feet from here," Mark explained, pointing in the direction he had found the branch. "Would you mind grabbing it? I don't want to leave her again," Mark offered softly, sitting down on the ground. He reached his hand back under the debris to grab Lexie's hand, showing her that he was still there.
"I found it!" Cristina called excitedly as she re-approached the group. Mark, Derek, and Meredith looked over to her quizzically. "My shoe!" She explained as if it was the most obvious thing.
"Did you find anything to help Lexie?" Mark asked, noticing she had Seattle Grace jackets, another oxygen tank, and a medical bag in her arms. She shook her head, setting all the items down on the ground.
"These will help," Meredith commented, offering her friend a smile. Mark nodded in agreement, rummaging through the bag of medical supplies. There were items in there that could be of use if Lexie sustained injuries once they removed the plane from her lower half. Derek started to make his way toward where Mark pointed, Meredith trailing after him. Mark resumed his previous position next to Lexie, looking over face. She still seemed coherent and color was returning to her cheeks, not as much as he would have liked but enough considering the state she was in.
A few moments later, Derek and Meredith were back, dragging the branch behind them. Mark forced a smile, glad to see they were able to get it to their site. "How do you think we should do this?" He asked Derek, pushing himself back to his feet. He ran his fingers across his jaw, a nervous habit that he had. Derek let out a sigh, looking at his best friend.
"Do you think we should start with trying to lift the plane without the branch? That way we don't have to worry about the branch possibly snapping," Derek surmised, surveying the rubble that Lexie was under. After thinking about it for a few moments, Mark nodded his head in agreement.
"Yeah, let's try that. Lexie can try to move herself backwards while we hold it. If she's unable to, then we can have Meredith and Cristina try to move her," Mark added, to which Derek nodded. Meredith and Cristina nodded in agreement, each moving to one side of the plane. Meredith bent down toward Lexie, noticing that she looked a bit better than the last time she saw her.
"We're gonna try and lift the plane, Lexie. Think you'll be able to move back a little to get free?" Meredith asked, pressing her lips together. Lexie nodded, though she was unsure if she had the strength in her to do it. "Okay," Meredith smiled, squeezing Lexie's hand before standing up.
Mark leaned back down to Lexie as Derek took his place a few feet away from Meredith. "Okay, babe, we're going to do this. If you can't move, yell for us to let us know. We will get you out," Mark promised, eyeing Lexie. She nodded again, a tear trickling down her cheek.
"I love you," Lexie whispered so no one else could hear her other than Mark.
"I love you, too," Mark responded just as quietly, running his hand over her arm soothingly. "See you soon," he smiled, standing on his feet. Mark took his side by Cristina, letting out a ragged breath. "Let's do this."
