Primeval Dinosaur vs Full Moon Choju
It was a warm day on a small, volcanic island west of the coast of France, where species thought long extinct, and completely new organisms thrived, untouched by the advances of humanity.
Inside the lush jungle, at the base of a dormant volcano, there was a clearing with a clear freshwater lake heated by underground thermal activity, perfect for the gigantic insects that made the area their home.
Meganulon
Ancient Insect
Out of the water emerged armored nymphs, the size of full grown humans. some crawled into the forest in search of prey, some used their clawed forelimbs to dig burrows into the base of the mountain, others climbed higher, and clung motionless onto the mountainside.
From the jungle came a guttural roar, followed by panicked chittering and the crunch of an exoskeleton. Out of the foliage stomped a thirty five meter tall upright theropod with bumpy turquoise-green scales, carrying a recently killed meganulon in Its jaws.
Gorosaurus
Primeval Dinosaur
Gorosaurus tossed the limp arthropod into the air and swallowed it whole, before setting his eyes on those around the mountain's side and base.
The meganulon at the base frantically dug as quickly as they could as Gorosaurus approached. The evolved allosaurus quickly snapped up one of the slower insects as the rest continued to dig for their lives, successfully making it out of sight. However, instead of going after the motionless nymphs slightly higher on the mountain, that would likely be there for a while, Gorosaurus began to scratch at the burrows with his foot, testing the solidity of the soil before spearing his head into several of the tunnels, successfully snagging a meganulon about fifty percent of the attempts.
Once the effort began to outweigh the reward Gorosaurus turned his sights to the somewhat larger meganulons higher up, their backs were cracked down the center, and winged creatures emerged from the shells.
Meganula
Ancient Dragonfly
The meganula began vibrating their wings in an attempt to fly, but they were still moist from the shed, making takeoff difficult.
Gorosaurus began climbing to reach the final course of his meal, snapping up two meganula before they could get off the ground. The rest of the meganula finally dried themselves enough to escape, taking to the sky seemingly out of reach of their predator's jaws.
Gorosaurus lowered his body, slammed his tail on the ground and made an astounding leap, thirty meters into the air. He was able to grab one last meganula from the swarm, and land back on the ground by the lake, as the rest of the ancient dragonflies flew to safety.
Completely satisfied, Gorosaurus began lapping up the warm lake water, only to be interrupted by a slight pain at his side. One of the meganula had flown back while the dinosaur was preoccupied, and stung him, draining some blood. Gorosaurus snapped at the pest, and it quickly flew off to rejoin Its swarm in search of more blood.
The moon began to rise into the sky, as day turned to night, and Gorosaurus searched for a resting place. He found a glade occupied by dozens of raptor-like reptiles with forward curved back spines.
Zilla
Godzilla of France
Gorosaurus roared, drawing the Lounge's attention. The youngest members hid as the adolescents lowered themselves, ready to strike. From the Group approached a full grown individual, standing about five meters taller than Gorosaurus. This was presumably the parent. The zilla walked straight up to their distant relative, and the two monsters exchanged a series of growls, hisses, and roars, seemingly coming to some sort of agreement.
Zillas weren't worth fighting. Individually they were weak, but they always came in groups, made full use of their intelligence to strategize, and held grudges, much like crows. Gorosaurus knew better than to make enemies of them.
The full-grown zilla turned, and began to walk away, with the infants and adolescents following shortly after; A couple hissed at Gorosaurus before they followed along.
With the glade now empty and quiet, Gorosaurus curled up under the light of the full moon, and began to close his eyes.
A loud impact from the direction of the volcano reverberated throughout the island, jolting Gorosaurus awake. Not sensing anything in his immediate vicinity, the dinosaur went back to sleep.
The next day the island was colder than usual. Gorosaurus felt sluggish. With some difficulty the dinosaur got to his hind legs, and roared out a yawn.
Usually the island was much more lively this time of day, but it seemed that not only were the island's cold blooded inhabitants inactive, but the plant life was less vibrant as well.
Gorosaurus did not dwell on the change for too long. Cold snaps weren't unheard of, and if worst comes to worst he could always burrow, and hibernate it out.
Marching through the forest Gorosaurus found that the group of zillas did not travel far from the glade he shooed them from. The cold seemed to have more of an effect on the normally energetic reptiles that now entered a state of brumation, awaiting the sun to revive them.
The hibernating zillas were of none of Gorosaurus' concern, so he continued to move onward.
Once Gorosaurus had made it to the watering hole he found that the lake's surface was littered with the floating bodies of hundreds of dead meganula. None of them appeared to have any injuries.
The water began to ripple as something massive rose from the depths. The first thing to break the water's surface were the creature's leathery wings, followed by a pair of jagged pincers, and a reptilian face.
Megaguirus
Super Dragonfly
Megaguirus' wings vibrated at a sonic pace, creating a nauseating frequency as the rest of her body was revealed, a body covered in spikes, six spindly legs, and an elongated abdomen that hung under her, ending in a deadly stinger.
The queen of the meganula dwarfed Gorosaurus at fifty meters, and severely out paced him with a flight speed of mach four, but if she was looking for a fight Gorosaurus would not back down.
Megaguirus raised higher into the air, ignoring the smaller kaiju to scan the horizon. Her eyes widened, spotting something out of Gorosaurus' line of sight, and in a blur she flew northwest, retreating from the island her species made their home.
Gorosaurus was unsure of what might've scared Megaguirus away, but his primary concern was the drinking water. The dinosaur took a tentative sniff at the water's edge, then one of the deceased meganula that floated by, not sensing anything toxic he began to drink and feed until he was satisfied.
Days passed, and the island's temperature did not return to normal, the bodies of the meganula began to rot, leaving the once clean lake a breeding ground for bacteria, food became scarce, and the zillas began to swim eastward, leaving towards mainland France. Gorosaurus was soon enough the only kaiju that remained.
Gorosaurus searched throughout the island for food. It was decided that had he not found anything that very day he would burrow underground and go dormant until conditions became favorable.
The sun was three fourths of the way across the horizon, as Gorosaurus circled the perimeter of the island's volcano. Far from the lake the dinosaur found a large crater, and sitting in the center was a large chunk of whitish rock that smelled of sulfur. Was this what scared Megaguirus away?
Gorosaurus saw this spot as good as any to begin his burrowing, so he began a small hole with his hind legs, and then speared his snout into the ground. Once Gorosaurus had gained some traction he tucked his limbs in, and began undulating his body to move through soil as a fish swam through water, completely disappearing underground.
After minutes of slithering through soil Gorosaurus found his way into an open cave structure. It was large enough for a kaiju to fit quite comfortably in, even with the pools of magma littering the floor, almost as if some other monster dug the cave out itself, but there wasn't another living creature to be found. Couldn't have been the meganulon, they never dug this deep, their tunnels were only big enough for themselves, and the heat would have dried them into husks. Zillas also seemed unlikely.
Whatever may have dug out the area, Gorosaurus decided it was gone now, so he balanced his weight on his tail, and delivered a fierce kangaroo kick to the wall, collapsing the tunnel he came through. After the entrance was sealed off Gorosaurus nestled himself into the furthest corner from the magma, and closed his eyes, going into a deep, dreamless rest.
Weeks passed, and it was the night of a full moon again, exactly one month from the day the island got colder. Gorosaurus began to stir from the noise of movement in the cavern. Something was down there with him.
Gorosaurus slowly opened his eyes, and once the blur had cleared he made out the figure of a creature unlike any kaiju he'd ever come across. It was a mangy furred, bipedal thing with stony exposed skin, a single long front fang, and three horns, one nasal and two that curved forward from the side of its neck. Strangest of all were two long rabbit ear-like frills protruded from its head with three holes in each.
Lunatyx
Full Moon Choju
Lunatyx began leaping towards a pool of magma, unfurled a tubelike tongue, and began drinking, completely unaware of Gorosaurus' presence.
This must have been the reason the island lost its warmth. Gorosaurus was furious. The primeval dinosaur approached the unsuspecting lunar terror beast, and bit down on the creature's tail with all of his strength.
Lunatyx roared in shock as Gorosaurus dragged him away from the magma pool. The choju jumped to his feet, and tore his tail out of the kaiju's jaws as he turned around. Lunatyx looked down on his opponent. He towered twenty three meters over the kaiju.
Lunatyx began to cackle. This insignificant little pest was trying to attack him? Choju were already superior to kaiju, but such a pathetic whelp of a kaiju challenging him was hysterical. Gorosaurus roared in defiance, and lunged for Lunatyx's leg.
Gorosaurus' teeth sunk into Lunatyx's knee, snapping the choju out of its laughter. That was it, no more Mr nice jerk. Lunatyx kicked Gorosaurus off, and breathed a stream of fire at him.
Gorosaurus landed on his feet, and jumped out of the way of the flames. Lunatyx leaped after the dinosaur, making a grab for him, but Gorosaurus reared up on his tail, and delivered a powerful kangaroo kick, knocking Lunatyx onto his back.
Gorosaurus wasted no time springing on top of Lunatyx, and trying to bite the choju's throat. Lunatyx pulled an arm up in defense, and Gorosaurus ended up clamped down on his hand. Lunatyx smacked at Gorosaurus with his free hand, but the dinosaur would not let go, sinking his teeth further.
Having had enough, Lunatyx gripped the dinosaur's jaw, and swung him full force at the cave wall, ripping his hand free. Gorosaurus was momentarily stunned by the blow, giving Lunatyx enough time to get back on his feet.
Gorosaurus quickly got back onto his hind legs, and jumped at Lunatyx with snapping jaws.
Before Gorosaurus could reach Lunatyx, the choju's eyeballs launched out of their sockets. Gorosaurus narrowly avoided the small projectiles, which exploded on impact with the cave wall, shaking the foundations and sending rubble flying. As soon as the eyes exploded a new pair regrew in their place.
The next set of eyes fired off, only for Gorosaurus to leap to the side. When Lunatyx's eyes regenerated the first thing he saw was a green tail, just before it made impact with his face; The choju tumbled over at the surprising force of the blow.
Gorosaurus once more tried to pounce the downed Choju, but was unceremoniously smacked away. Gorosaurus landed on his feet once again, refusing to let up his assault.
Gorosaurus kicked a boulder at Lunatyx's face, which broke apart on impact, momentarily dazing the Choju. With his enemy stunned Gorosaurus pressed his foot down on Lunatyx's throat, attempting to break through the other monster's stony skin with his claw.
As he was being held down Lunatyx spewed a white gas from his mouth; Toxic fumes quickly filled the cave causing the magma to violently bubble.
Gorosaurus took a face full of the fumes and stumbled backwards. Lunatyx jumped back to his feet, gripped Gorosaurus by the throat, and began mercilessly pummeling the smaller monster with his fist until he noticed the cave floor was beginning to shrink as magma rose.
He threw Gorosaurus to the ground, and decided to leave the half conscious dinosaur to his fate, burrowing away to the surface.
Gorosaurus felt the cave getting hotter. With some difficulty, he opened his eyes to find Lunatyx was nowhere to be seen, and the magma had drastically risen.
Gorosaurus frantically rose to his feet, finding himself on a shrinking bit of solid ground. The dinosaur leaped from islet to islet until he was able to reach the cave wall, he then speared his snout into the earth and began to burrow his way upward.
Upon reaching the surface Lunatyx began spewing volcanic flames at the island's greenery, and firing his explosive eyeballs at the stone around him to speed up the destruction of the island.
This did nothing to further the choju's goal of draining the planet's magma, but knowing that he was destroying something precious to that irritating little kaiju filled Lunatyx with joy regardless.
After minutes of digging Gorosaurus made it to the surface and gasped for fresh air, only to see that all over the island the forests were burning to ash, the water was boiling away, the mountain was crumbling, and pools of lava bubbled from the ground.
Facing away, Lunatyx cackled at his handiwork, seemingly unaware of his foe's presence.
Gorosaurus ferociously lunged at Lunatyx, only for the choju to backhand him away once more, cackling even harder. The dinosaur kaiju skidded against the broken stone ground, stopping just short of some pooling lava.
As Gorosaurus tried to get back up Lunatyx began spitting fireballs. A hit to the head knocked Gorosaurus back to the ground, even more dangerously close to the lava.
Lunatyx rushed towards the downed kaiju before he could make yet another attempt to get up, and gripped his throat, slowly forcing his head ever closer to the puddle of molten rock.
Gorosaurus desperately struggled as the scales at the back of his head started to scorch and smoke. Lunatyx just kept steadily pushing him closer, taking his time to toy with the weaker kaiju, all the while letting out a demented, gravelly laugh.
The dinosaur's tail found its way around a nearby spire, and Gorosaurus used it as leverage to resist Lunatyx's strength. Grasping the spire tightly, Gorosaurus pressed both of his feet against Lunatyx's stomach, and launched the choju off of him with all of his power.
Lunatyx was completely taken aback by the force he was thrown, and the fact that Gorosaurus was still about to fight, as he crashed against the burning forest. Catching fire, Lunatyx sprung up and frantically swatted the flames out. Surprisingly, the flame left singe marks on his fur.
Gorosaurus immediately took notice of how Lunatyx struggled, and came to a realization. He wasn't heatproof on the outside.
Gorosaurus swiftly pounced, knocking Lunatyx back into the charred woodland, and jumped away, leaving no time for Lunatyx to counter attack.
Lunatyx began to pick himself up, only for Gorosaurus to perform another hop and run, knocking the choju face first into more flaming timber. In the open air Gorosaurus was free to use his jumping ability to the fullest.
Lunatyx clutched some burning trees in one of his hands, and shot up, tossing them in Gorosaurus' direction. Gorosaurus jumped clean out of the way, and surprisingly changed direction, leaping after the crumbling mountain.
Lunatyx fired off his eyeballs again, but they didn't even slow Gorosaurus down as he nimbly weaved away. Gorosaurus was soon too far out of Lunatyx's range, so the enraged choju began sprinting after his opponent.
Gorosaurus stopped and waited at the base of the mountain, right before a steep, crumbling incline. Lunatyx quickly bridged the distance between them, but just before he was within arms reach Gorosaurus bound up the crumbling face, and stood at the edge, looking down at Lunatyx.
Lunatyx tried to claw his way up after Gorosaurus, but Gorosaurus began kicking stones and debris down at him. The rockfall and loose ground sent Lunatyx tumbling back to the mountain base, where he roared and spat flames in outrage at the dinosaur up top.
For Lunatyx's troubles, Gorosaurus used his tail to knock larger boulders down at him, one shattering on impact with Lunatyx's head.
Lunatyx was positively seething at this point, and began firing off his explosive eyeballs once more. Gorosaurus jumped out of the way as the explosion created a huge fissure in the mountainside, causing a landslide that nearly completely buried Lunatyx, and released a pyroclastic flow.
Gorosaurus landed safely out of harm's way, and watched as Lunatyx frantically tried to unbury himself to escape the slowly encroaching lava.
The lava was close enough to singe the hair off of his back when Lunatyx finally pulled himself free, only for Gorosaurus to leap in front him, and rear up on his tail. With one last kangaroo kick Lunatyx was thrown directly into the flow. The rabbit-like choju let out one last gravelly roar as he quickly burned alive.
Before Gorosaurus could breathe a sigh of relief the ground began to violently shake and geysers of molten rock began erupting all over. The island was beginning to sink.
Gorosaurus rushed in the direction of the ocean, bounding away from the crumbling volcano, and narrowly circumventing past the magma shooting up from the ground.
At what used to be the island's beach lava had melted away the sand, and was sizzling upon contact with the water. The ground Gorosaurus could stand on was shrinking, and the distance between him and the safety of the ocean was farther than he'd ever jumped before. There was no time to find another crossing point, Gorosaurus had to make this count.
With a small running start Gorosaurus crouched down, and launched himself over the molten sand, landing just far enough into the water to avoid being boiled alive. Gorosaurus then swam. Instinct drove him forward. Was he going in the same direction Zilla went, or was he following Megaguirus' path? He did not know, but he took solace in the fact that he'd never see Lunatyx again.
Happy Easter
I chose this matchup on a whim, ignored it for a while after reaching the 80% mark, and then realized "Easter is in two days." So I rushed to have it done by then. As you can tell I was a little late, but eh, close enough.
I always liked Gorosaurus for being such a massive underdog, Lunatyx is a fairly underutilized choju, and since both of them are excellent jumpers, I thought that was a decent connecting thread to go off of. I began writing this one to practice background and scenery detail, which was the reason behind all the pre-battle set-up.
Gorosaurus was definitely the protagonist of this one shot, I decided to use the Reiwa era incarnation from the anime trilogy prequel novels (same for Zilla and Megaguirus), and for Lunatyx I chose the showa incarnation because he looks far more rabid and vicious than his Heisei era redesign. If Lunatyx had started the battle completely serious then he would have ripped Gorosaurus apart in seconds, even a weaker choju like Lunatyx is still far more dangerous than most kaiju.
If you are coming from the Godzilla side of the fandom you may be wondering what a choju is. A choju is a creation of Yapool, an inter-dimensional satan figure from the Ultraman franchise. They are bizarre living weapons made from both organic and inorganic substances, driven only to kill and cause misery. According to Ultraman Ace they don't feel pain or fear. The word roughly translates to super beast, or terror beast.
Lastly thank you to my reviewer for your advice, I appreciate any feedback I can get. This isn't really an active project for me, more of an every now and then type of thing when I'm in a writing rut, but I'm glad you enjoyed it. Maybe I'll do one of Ultraman Titas fighting Legendary Mechagodzilla somewhere down the line.
