Hi! It's me again. I hope you liked the first chapter of my story. It's time for the second part. Joan Overfield, thanks for your review.
Chapter 2
Chloe got into her car and quickly dialed Lucifer's number once again. Well, to tell the truth, she didn't really expected him to pick it up. She hoped Maze would help her, so she tried reaching her too but her phone was switched off.
"Think like Lucifer," Chloe tried to motivate herself, "What happened there and where would he go?" she wondered. Obviously, there was a serious fight back at the precinct and she really feared that it had something to do with Michael's 'bigger plan'. However, she took comfort in the fact that Lucifer wasn't alone in this, that he had Amenadiel by his side and that together they could stand up against Michael. Or so she hoped.
As for the sudden disappearing, either Amenadiel got his powers back or someone else was behind it. What she learned from being around celestials, was to expect the unexpected.
And the only place Lucifer and Amenadiel could go to, that came to her mind, was Lux. So she started the car and sped towards the club. She tried to get there as fast as she could, her grip on the steering wheel becoming stronger with each second and her knuckles turning white. The closer she got, the worse thoughts clouded her mind. She had a very bad feeling about it.
Soon, she arrived at Lux. She parked the car in front of it and rushed inside. It was quite early so people haven't shown up yet. Inside the club Chloe found only the bartender and some security guys. Unfortunately, when asked, they said they hadn't seen him today. That being so, she decided to go upstairs and check Lucifer's penthouse.
It seemed to her that the ride to the last floor took forever. She imagined that when stepping out of the lift she would find Lucifer together with Amenadiel and they would properly explain everything. The elevator stopped and the door opened almost soundlessly. Chloe moved into the penthouse with some degree of apprehension. She couldn't see neither the owner nor his brother.
"Lucifer!" she shouted, part of her still hoping she'll find him here.
"Lucifer! Are you in there?" She continued, walking the steps into his bedroom.
Obviously, he wasn't. She looked for him everywhere, even in his enormous walk-in closet. She gazed at the king-size bed they had both shared just a couple of days earlier. A deep blush crept to her cheeks. Then she noticed the painting, being a cover for a safe, and another vivid memory came flooding back. It was her birthday and Lucifer left and went to Las Vegas without telling her. She was so annoyed and disappointed with him then but at the end of the day he came back and gave her the most exquisite gift she could get. Gently she touched the necklace that she was wearing every day and closed her eyes. Images were racing through her mind - from the day she shot him to the moment she hugged him after receiving the gift. She could still feel the touch of his arms around her and the smell of his cologne. She just wished he was here with her.
She sighed and went back to the living room area. She had no idea what she should do next. Chloe started pacing the floor but nothing came to her mind. Reluctantly, she went on the balcony. It triggered so many memories, the most painful being the one from a year before when she professed her love to him and he sacrificed himself and left to rule in Hell.
Her eyes filled with sudden tears. She didn't want to dwell on the past though, she desperately needed something to give her some sense of hope. She leaned on the railing and gazed into the distance, pensive. The sun was setting, casting a golden glow on the vast city outstretching in front of her. The view was breathtaking. She truly wanted to share this moment with Lucifer and stay here in his arms, feeling safe from all this chaos around them. She closed her eyes for a moment.
"Where are you, Lucifer?" she whispered.
Wiping tears from her eyes, she failed to suppress a sob. Now she knew how he must have felt like when she had been missing.
But at the moment with Lucifer's gone, all she could do was wait for any sign from him. And as dreadful as it might sound, she had to admit that there was nothing more she could do for the time being.
She felt totally defeated and exhausted after all the events taking place in the last days. And as much as she would prefer to stay here at the penthouse, have a drink or two, lie down and wait for Lucifer, she decided against it. Deep down she knew it wasn't a good idea. Moreover, with Michael being still out there and Lucifer and Amenadiel God knows where, she felt highly insecure so she decided to do the only thing she could think of – to pick up Trixie from her mom and go home. Maybe there she would think of something else.
With that thought, she cast the last glance at the quiet penthouse, got inside the elevator and headed downstairs to get back to her car.
After spending more than an hour in the afternoon traffic, Chloe finally reached her mother's house. She turned off the engine but remained inside, deeply in thought. She had to play it right and be careful with her mother. Of course, she couldn't tell her that she got kidnapped by a celestial psycho, who happened to be Lucifer's twin brother, with his 'bigger plan' and that now Lucifer was missing which could be related to said plan.
She didn't want to add any more worries to her mother. Chloe remembered the woman's frantic reaction when she had found out her only daughter decided to quit her acting career and follow in her father's footsteps by joining the LAPD.
That's when their relations got worse. Fortunately, they managed somehow to set things right between them. So Chloe decided to try and act as normal as she could, get Trixie and get out of there straight away. Although knowing her mother, she should have known this task would be quite challenging.
She braced herself for the inevitable, put on her best fake smile and stepped out of the vehicle. She did her best not to rush the whole way to the house. She just wanted to hold Trixie and make sure she was okay.
Chloe knocked on the door, waiting impatiently for her mother to open it. But nothing happened. She tried again with no luck. She started to worry. She pressed the handle and pushed the door open. She stepped inside with caution trying to see if there was anything off.
"Mom, it's me, Chloe! Are you there?" she shouted, panic slowly rising in her voice.
Her hand went automatically to her gun. The silence that greeted her, was overwhelming.
"Trixie, where are you?" she called out even louder. She was walking through the living room toward the kitchen when her mother emerged from the back of the house.
"Mom, where's Trixie?" Chloe asked fearing that something bad might have happened.
"Well, hello to you too. Trixie's in the backyard. We were watching the stars, you know how much she likes them." Penelope replied. And then she studied her daughter intently. Something was wrong. She seemed to be nervous and stressed.
"Sweetie, are you all right? What happened to you?" the woman pointed to her bandaged hand.
"Oh, that's nothing," she said trying to brush it off, "I've just had a bad day at work, that's all." Her mother knew she couldn't lie and putting it that way wasn't really a lie.
"Oh, really? You seem quite tense." She surely noticed that.
"Yes, I'm fine." Chloe replied and crossed her arms.
Her mother knew what she was doing. It wasn't easy to trick Penelope Decker. She was like a walking lie detector. And she noticed right away that although Chloe may say she's okay, her body language proved something otherwise.
"If you say so. And how's that partner of yours? I haven't seen him for a while. Isn't he supposed to protect you?" She stated, looking at her hurt hand in a suggestive way.
Upon hearing these words, something snapped in Chloe.
"Yes, he protects me all the time." She stated firmly.
"Well, your condition shows something completely different. Maybe he's not a partner you need." Penelope still tried to prove her point.
Chloe couldn't believe her ears. Her mom always liked Lucifer, almost adored him and now something like this. When she addressed her, anger fuelled her words.
"Mom, Lucifer is the only partner I would work with. He's a good, caring person and I can always count on him. I… I love him. And if it wasn't for him, I would have already been…" She stopped, not wanting to finish the sentence with this dreadful word – dead.
Penelope was taken aback by her daughter's outburst. Wow, she didn't see that coming. Of course, Trixie mentioned Lucifer many times, especially their Monopoly nights and she herself noticed the fact that whenever Chloe and Lucifer were in the same room, sparks were flying but she didn't expect her daughter to finally admit her feelings.
"Mom, he's not bad. I can truly see him for who he really is." Chloe bit her lips to keep them from quivering and blinked her eyes to get rid of the blur. And if I only knew where he is now… she thought to herself.
Penelope recognized her daughter really meant what she said along with this passion and courage that led her throughout her life.
"Honey, I'm sorry," she approached Chloe and grasped her hands, "I'm so happy you found someone like Lucifer. Have you told him about your feelings?"
Chloe let out a shaky breath. "Yes, he knows about them and we're… finally together." She smiled but it didn't quite reach her eyes.
"But…" Penelope realized something was off.
"But there are still some issues we need to discuss." The young woman added reluctantly, not wanting to go into celestial details with her mother. "Listen, let's stop fighting. I just want to take Trixie and go home, okay?"
"Chloe, if you need some time for yourself or to heal, she can stay at my place. It's fine with me." Penelope suggested.
"No!" It probably came out too harsh. "I mean, it's not necessary. We'll be okay. Don't worry."
"Sure?"
"Yeah, I'm sure." Chloe nodded, an eager expression appearing on her face.
Penelope was absolutely convinced that there was something her daughter wasn't telling her but she didn't want to press any further. What she learned from being Chloe's mother, was that to let her daughter do things her own way. She was just like her father.
"All right." the older woman finally let it go. "Trixie, honey, your mum's here!" she shouted, turning towards the back of the house.
"Coming! Hi mommy!" Trixie stormed into the room and stopped in her tracks as she took in her mother's state. Her desperate look, tears shining in her eyes and her bandaged hand.
"Mommy, are you hurt?" Serious concern was visible in her eyes.
Chloe rushed to her daughter and crouched in front of her.
"No, monkey, I'm good…," she reached for Trixie's hands and held them tightly, "really." Chloe tried to sound convincing, even though she suspected it wouldn't satisfy the young girl who smiled all of a sudden and replied. "Okay. Can we go home now?"
"Of course, Trix. Just get your things." Chloe said. She stood up and watched the girl gathering her belongings like a flash. After five minutes she was ready, waiting for her mother impatiently at the door.
"Bye grandma!" She shouted. "Are you coming, mommy?"
Chloe chuckled to herself. Usually, it was her who had to rush her daughter to get ready. It seemed quite suspicious.
"Yes, I am. Bye, mom." She said in a haste and glanced at her mother.
"Bye girls and good luck, honey." Penelope replied, hoping everything would turn out all right for her daughter because she deserved happiness for sure.
