Fancy Finding You Down Here

Kendra rushed into her office and threw three files on her desk and walked over to her cabinet, opening it, "Kirk!" She yelled back through the door, "I am going to need the traces on those samples by the end of the day tomorrow. Fury wanted them yesterday."

"Fury didn't mention you were being reassigned." A voice carried walking into her office. Kendra took a pause as she was putting away her files, slowly she dropped in one and pulled out another, shutting it before she turned around. She looked back and Steve Rogers was standing in her office doorway, not unlike those few years ago and staring back at her with clouded eyes.

"Steve," She smiled, walking around to sit on the edge of her desk, "Looks like you found me."

He crossed his arms, "I didn't know you were in DC."

Kendra grabbed a file nearby on her desk and opened to scan files, "Well, after what happened in New York," She flipped through some pages, "SHIELD is less trusting of aliens more than ever, so, I'm pretty sure this is their best way to keep an eye on me. Which is fine," She slapped it shut and looked back to Steve, "I needed a change anyway."

"How long have you been here? You seem to be pretty settled in."

Kendra tossed the file back onto her desk and sighed, "About 5 months, I've been down here pretty much 24/7 upon arrival. Sometimes I get to sleep in my apartment. But most of the time I am here, sometimes Tasha comes down here and hides."

Steve raised a brow, "She's the one who told me you had arrived."

Kendra laughed and brushed her hair back, "Natasha pretty much knows everything, she and Clint helped me move from New York."

"You could've called." Steve expressed, voice clearly hurt.

It was Kendra's turn to cross her arms, "I could say the same for you"

He stepped forward, "Kendra, I'm sorry-"

Kendra got up and rounded back to behind her desk, "It's in the past Steve. I won't lie, being stood up by Captain America was not the highlight of my dating career but it's since long forgotten. We both have demanding jobs, and sometimes things can't be helped."

"It wasn't my intention to hurt you, or not call." He said sincerely, "Things are just so different now."

Kendra nodded and sat down at her desk, "Yeah I know that, you got labeled the hero of New York with the rest of them and I was hidden away for safekeeping."

"New York wasn't your fault." Steve assured her.

Kendra gave him a sad smile, "Yet I'm still getting a lot of the blame. But that's long gone, Steve. This opportunity here is great and the change is well received, people mostly ignore me now."

He nodded, "So I hear. Well, seeing as you are in DC for the time being, how about I make up that dinner?"

Straightening herself, Kendra smirked somewhat coldly, "Are my ears deceiving me, or is Steve Rogers asking me out on a makeup dinner."

Scratching the back of his head he looked around, "I just thought, I thought there was something between-."

The doors of the lab opened and a familiar face walked inside, "God that meeting was crap." Kendra looked behind Steve and Steve turned to see Rumlow walking inside. Rumlow spotted the doctor and walked over to her office, "Sorry, Doc but now- oh hey Cap," He acknowledged his teammate beside him, "fancy finding you down here."

Steve gave him a nod, "Rumlow, I'm surprised to see you myself"

Rumlow smirked and walked inside closer to the doctor, "Just picking up my date." He turned to Kendra, "You ready Doc?"

Kendra politely smiled and placed her hand on his arm and gave it a squeeze, "Give me a minute Brock, I need to drop these with Kirk" and stepped forward in between the two men heading out of her office, "Steve was just saying hi, he wasn't aware I had been reassigned and wanted to catch up. We worked together in New York."

A twinkle appeared in Rumlows eyes as he turned to the Cap, "Ah yes, the Avengers stuff. Anyways, come on, you gotta eat sometime and our reservations are at 7."

She smiled and nodded, handing off a file to Kirk "I will meet you upstairs, I will just be a minute and then I'll just grab my coat."

Rumlow gave her a salute and a goodbye nod to Steve as he walked away. Steve gaze followed Rumlow's retreating form out of the lab before turning back to Kendra who was coming back to her office, "My apologies. I didn't realize you were seeing anyone."

Laughing allowed, Kendra shook her head, "Nobody SEES Rumlow Steve. We were recruited around the same time, me as an agent...him, well his set of skills is very different than ours."

"I read his file, he was a shield mercenary after he was detained." He stated, his tone unapproving.

Kendra shrugged, "Well, we all have a past. You forget I was also detained, as were you after the big freeze. In any case, Brock and I spent a lot of time together at home base."

Steve waited a beat, "So... is there something going on with you two then?"

She smiled, "We were a long time ago, but it was nice to see an old friend when I got here."

"You know," He spoke as he walked closer, "I'm also your friend. You knew I was here, you could've called."

She walked around him, "I knew you would eventually find me," she winked and grabbed her coat, "Don't be a stranger ok?" She passed his form and she said her goodbyes and walked to the elevator. Once inside and the doors were closed she let out a breath she hadn't realized she was holding.

.

..

Fury waited for the secretary to finish his call with the World Security Council, the doors opened and his old friend stepped inside.

"I work forty floors away and it takes a hijacking for you to visit?" Secretary Pierce joked walking side by side and extending his hand for Fury to shake.

"Well, a nuclear war would do it too." Fury comments with a straight face.

They shake hands, ""Busy in there?" Fury refers to Pierce's meeting with the World Security Council.

Pierce shoved his hands into his pocket, "Nothing some earmarks can't fix."

Fury looked to the ground, "I'm, uh...here to ask a favor."

Pierce chuckled, "Last favor you asked ended up with bringing that doctor to my labs. Which was a nightmare getting it approved through the council, seeing as they have no trust in her"

"That doctor is one of the most advanced minds on the planet and she is here working for you."

Piece displayed a hint of annoyance, "She's been decent. So, what is this favor?"

Fury sighed, "I want you to call for a vote. Project insight has to be delayed."

Pierce's eyes went wide, "Nick, that's not a favor, that's a subcommittee hearing. A long one."

"It could be nothing, probably is nothing." Fury assured, "I just need time to make sure it's nothing."

"What if it's something?" Pierce pushed.

"Then we'll both be damn glad those Helicarriers aren't in the air."

Pierce hesitates a moment before replying, "Fine. But you gotta get Iron Man to stop by my niece's birthday party."

Nick nods and reaches his hand to pierce to shake, "Thank you, sir."

"And not just a flyby, he's got to mingle." Pierce says seriously and turns to leave.

.

..

Kendra said her goodnight to Brock as he dropped her off in front of her place. With a wave she shut the door to his speedster and he sped off into the night. Laughing to herself she walked into her building. With a wave to her doorman she walked over to the elevators, using her fob to gain access and she stepped inside. When the doors opened again to her hallway she walked down to her apartment and paused, the tv was on and Kendra knew she had turned it off just the night before.

She took her keys and slowly unlatched the lock and opened the door, her whole body on alert.

"Before you decide to murder me, I just want to warn you" Nats voice rang throughout the aprtment, "I am quite comfortable on your couch eating at the moment and it would ruin my night."

Kendra exhaled and let her body relax. She tossed the keys on her side table and hung up her jacket before walking into the living room and finding Nastasha spread out on her couch, stuffing her face with food. Glass of wine already poured and an empty glass sitting next to it.

"Is this your way of apologizing?" Kendra asked, brow raised as she picked up the wine and poured herself a glass.

Natasha sat up to make room for her friend, grabbing her own glass to take a sip.

"He pissed me off, and you were the easiest way to make sure I pissed him off right back. So tell me, what did his face look like?"

Kendra took a sip of wine and relaxed into the couch, "Honestly? He was really hurt. Maybe I should've reached out earlier."

Nastasha rolled her eyes, "No, he had all the time in the world to fix things and didn't. Besides, it's not everyday he has to sweat. Sort of makes him human."

Kendra chuckled, "Well, he asked me to dinner."

Natasha tossed her head back and laughed, "Classic. So did you say yes, of course you said yes. You have been pining for him "

Kendra stared at her friend, "I haven't been pining for anything besides," she paused for wine.

Natasha leaned forward, "What, Kendra. What!"

Kendra put her wine on the table, "He sorta asked me out right as Brock walked into the lab, who was there cause we had dinner plans tonight."

Natasha gasped, completely drawn into the story. "No!"

Kedra nodded, "Yep."

Suddenly their phones began to beep and buzz. They pulled out their respected devices and eyes went wide. "Foxtrot down, medical evac ordered. I'm being called back to HQ" Kendra whispered. She looked to Natasha.

Natasha jumped up from the couch, "We have to go. I'll drop you off on my way to the hospital."

The girls grabbed their coats and ran out of the apartment.
