Running away is a permanent solution to a temporary problem. It's not that I couldn't take this guy, because don't get me wrong... I absolutely could. It was the witnesses with their stupid phones that can be blast information across the internet in the same time it takes for me to drop from the top of Mount Everest and back to solid lower ground. I discarded my food and coffee by throwing it at the handsome but angry, let's not forget angry, stranger hot on my heels. In another other moment I don't think I'd mind being chased by this chap but the furious look in his eyes and my annoying ability to sense what a person is thinking from time to time, tells me I should really think about running faster than I am right now.
"Stop!" He yells, his voice deep and foreboding. Strangely enough, because they guy didn't say please, I to ignore his stupid request and I started to draw on my energy to jump to the roof of the tall building coming up ahead, the same building I was sat on top of not so long ago.
"It was super nice meeting you! Let's not do this again!" My eyes changed to the same deep orange as before and the same-colored energy began to swarm beneath my feet as I skidded to a stop and jumped. Sadly though, it wasn't for as long as I hoped because the guy had the grip of a Vulcan and wrapped his hand around my ankle and threw me onto the ground in alleyway, the slime inches from my face as I let out a raspy groan.
"That wasn't very nice..." I huffed, rolling off my shoulder and hip and onto my back, my eyes widening as he pressed his hand to my throat.
"Who sent you?!" He screamed, which I must add was completely unnecessary because he was inches from my face.
"Get...Off..." I squirmed beneath him, a glimpse of metal peaking from the sleeve of his jacket.
"I won't ask you again." His voice was stern and I grabbed the wrist of the hand that squeezed my throat, my fingers touching cold metal. I was intrigued I must add but I didn't have enough time to think about it as the guy was really cutting off my airway.
"Neither... Will... I..." My eyes glowed an intense orange and I smacked my free palm into his chest which sent him flying upwards into the air. I watched him go as high as the top of the building, which was fifteen – maybe twenty floors as I gasped for air, sitting up and putting my hand back into the same slime as before.
"Fu-…" I began to curse before a deep, but manly, scream echoed down the alley and I looked up, stopping him in motion directly above my head.
"Who are you..." His eyes wide with anger and maybe wonderment? I'm not sure, I'm probably just wishful thinking there.
"I'm not your enemy, that's all you need to know." I lifted my hand and wiped my fingers on his shirt before moving from beneath him, my hip buckling slightly as I tried to stand. "I didn't mean to hurt you." I whispered, a painful groan escaping my lips as I used the wall as a brace as I finally came to a stand. "I'll let you down but I'd appreciate it if you would stop trying to fight me." I moved toward his floating body and lifted the sleeve of his shirt to see the most impressive prosthetic arm I've ever seen. "Damn, they've really come a long way huh..."
"Don't touch that." He growled and I raised my hands, stepping away and allowing my energy to drop him, probably a little harder than I should've but hey, the guy gave me attitude.
"I'm sorry..." I breathed, the pain radiating from my hip into my ribs. "Things are complicated... Are you okay? Did I hurt you?" I lifted my now normal colored eyes as he picked himself off the floor for the second time.
"No. I'm fine."
I guess I deserved that. "Are we good?" I watched him as he watched me, thoughts swirling around my mind as I wondered what that metal arm was capable of. He was definitely faster and stronger than the common man, what else was he able to do?
"Come with me." He said as he walked past me, his gloved hand gripping my elbow once again as he pulled me back into the street.
"Where are we going...? I'm not a safe person to be around..."
He scoffed and gave me the side eye, my feet struggling to keep up as he practically dragged me all the way to a not so bad looking apartment building.
"I mean, this is a little forward. I usually ask for dinner first..." I joked as he pushed me inside the lobby and into the only working elevator.
"Very funny."
"Yeah I can tell, you seem super amused..." I muttered back, drooling sarcasm. The elevator stopped and he led me down to the end of the hall and we stopped at what I presumed to be his place of residence. "I really shouldn't be here..." Fear and anxiety started to ripple through me as he used his keys to open the door.
"Where else will you go? The alley full of trash?" He placed his hand on my back and used what seemed like very little force as I stuck my heels into the ground to push me into his apartment.
"You don't understand..."
"I understand more than you think." He replied, slamming the door shut behind him and deadbolting it.
"You know I could just blast that door off the hinges, right?" I gestured to the door as he walked past me, opening a closet door to take out a towel.
"I know." He shoved the towel into my arms as I watched him with sheer curiosity. Why wasn't he afraid? "The bathroom is that way. Take a shower, you stink."
"Oh..." I lifted my hoodie to my nose and recoiled in slight, but only slight, disgust. "Thank you...?"
He didn't say anything as he went into the kitchen and I was just left standing in front of the front door. I could so easily just leave, he would never know. He would probably forget about my entire existence overnight... I bit into my lip and argued with myself internally for another minute or so before I decided that a shower would be amazing. "I don't have any clean clothes..."
"I'll leave some out for you." A blunt voice responded and I nodded slowly, my eyes lifting as I walked into the bathroom and closed and the door behind me. I let out a breath, my forehead pressing against the wood as allowed myself to relax. I moved from the door and switched on the shower and undressed, my body aching from where he smashed me into the ground. I looked down at my hip as a bruise began to form and I sighed.
"Damn..."
I pulled the curtain closed behind me as I stepped under the warm spray, a breath of content escaping me as I let the water soak my hair and body. It had been a few weeks since I was able to use a shower but I try whenever I can, it's just with my way of living it's hard when you're trying to keep a low profile. Good job I've done with that after today. I spent at least ten minutes washing my hair multiple times and scrubbing my body within an inch of its life, my skin was pink where I'd scrubbed it so long. I switched the shower off and when I pulled back the curtain, a pile of neat clothes was waiting for me next to the sink. I didn't even hear the guy come in... He wouldn't have peaked, would he? I shook the thought from my mind and pulled on a sweater which was far too large for me and a pair of men's sweat pants. I had to roll the bottom up a good few times but I have to admit, these feel damn good and smell fresh as hell. I wonder what detergent he uses?
"Come out here." He yelled and I walked out of the bathroom, the smell of toasted bread wafting up my nose. "It's not much but here..." He slid a plate towards me on the counter and placed a coffee in my hand, he didn't even look at me before he walked over and sat on a couch that wasn't even properly put together yet. Maybe he was just moving in?
"Thank you..." I whispered as I sipped the coffee, my whole-body shivering in pleasure as it warmed my throat. "God that's good." I picked up my toast and slowly made my way to the sofa, my mind unconsciously using my energy to dry off my hair within a few seconds.
"How did you do that?" He asked, his blue eyes watching me with curiosity and caution.
"Do what?" I responded as I shoved a large portion of the toast into my mouth.
"Your hair..."
"Oh! Uh..." I swallowed my food and sat on the floor opposite him, flinching slightly in pain. "I forget I do it sometimes... I have this form of energy that I can manipulate. It's what I uh... hit you with and it's also how I can drop from tall buildings without hurting myself." I mean it does other stuff too but I didn't want to overwhelm the poor guy.
"What's your name?" He asked, my eyes lifted to look at him properly as my fingers wrapped around the warmth of the coffee mug. I debated telling him, the people that know my name end up in very bad situations, or worse...
"It's uh... It's Raev." I took a slurp of my coffee and leant my head back against the wall, the exhaustion finally winning the fight and taking over me.
"I'm Bucky."
That was the last thing I heard before I passed out.
