Two months and eleven days later...
The Special Victims Unit detectives were slugging through a mountain of paperwork when a call came in.
Kat took the call, then headed towards Olivia's Office.
"Come in," called Olivia, answering Kat's knock.
"Sorry to interrupt, Cap. We've got a case. A twelve-year-old girl was brought into the hospital for attempted suicide. When they ran some tests, they found evidence of sexual activity. They requested us. You specifically, " Kat informed her boss.
"I'm assuming since they called us, they believe it wasn't consensual," Olivia replied.
"You assume correctly," Kat confirmed. "And one more thing…" Olivia kept her attention on the younger woman, "The girl's pregnant."
Olivia sadly shook her head. "Thanks, Kat. I'll take Rollins. You and Fin hold down the fort here."
Kat nodded. "Will do, Cap."
About forty-five minutes later, Olivia and Amanda arrived at the hospital. She and Amanda were headed to the nurse's station to request a room number when a voice called out, "Olivia!" The two women turned towards the voice and Olivia's eyes widened in surprise.
"Topanga Matthews?"
"Yeah. It's me. Your victim is my son's...ex-girlfriend," she told them, still unable to process that Ava ended things with her youngest child. "I'm the one who told them to call you," the younger woman explained.
"Ok. Well, is Ava up to answering some questions?" Olivia asked.
"Maybe. She's still pretty shaken up, though, I'm worried about how she'll handle reliving the events, "Topanga admitted.
"We'll go easy on her," Amanda promised.
"Topanga, this is Detective Amanda Rollins," Olivia introduced.
"Nice to meet you, Detective. Olivia and I have known each other for years. When you work in corporate law, you witness a lot of harassment situations. I've had to testify a few times," Topanga told the other blonde.
"Nice to meet you, too. And I know what you mean. Corporations can be real boys' clubs," Amanda replied.
Topanga rolled her eyes. "Tell me about it. Well, why don't you two just come with me. I'll take you to Ava's room."
"Thank you," Olivia responded as she and Amanda followed the other woman.
Ava's mother greeted them in the hallway. After Topanga had introduced them, Ava's mom snapped, "You better catch that piece of garbage and make him pay for what he's done to my little girl! I mean, he got her pregnant at twelve-years-old! I want him to pay!"
"We will do everything we can to make sure the boy never has a chance to hurt your daughter or anyone else ever again, but right now we need to talk to her. Do we have your permission to do that?" Amanda gently requested.
Ava's mom nodded and led the way.
When they reached Ava's room, they found the preteen staring into space as KC held her hand. KC looked up as she saw the four women enter the room.
"Ava, Baby, these women are detectives from the Special Victims Unit in the NYPD. They would like to talk to you about…about your situation," Ava's mom said softly, earning a glare from KC over her callous wording.
"I don't want to talk to them," Ava stated flatly.
"I'm sorry, Darling, but you don't have a choice. These detectives need your help to lock that sick creep away and you need to tell them what they want to know," Ava's mom demanded.
Ava started trembling uncontrollably as her breathing and heart rate amped up, and her cheeks puffed out. KC reacted quickly and shoved a bag in front of the girl just in time for her to expel what little was left in her stomach. After she had nothing left to throw up, Ava collapsed against KC, sobbing.
"You're fine, Ava. Stop being so dramatic," Mrs. Morgenstern stated unintentionally coldly, still unable to completely process what happened to her daughter.
KC held her son's girl best friend's hand as she stated tensely, "With all due respect, Mrs. Morgenstern, Ava is traumatized and you are making it worse."
"I am her mother. How I talk to my daughter is none of your business. Ava is just fine. She's only being dramatic to get attention. She's always been like this."
"That's for us to discern, Mrs. Morgenstern. Why don't you go get some coffee while we talk to Ava? We find it's easier for the kids to open up to us without a parent there. It takes the pressure off," Olivia explained.
"I'm her mother. You can't talk to her without me," insisted Mrs. Morgenstern.
"Mom, it's ok. I'll talk to them. You can go," Ava consented softly.
But, Darling, you can't…" began Ava's mom.
"I'll be right outside the door, Mrs. Morgenstern. If Ava starts to panic, Captain Benson or Detective Rollins can come get me," promised KC.
"Ava needs her mother," pressed Mrs. Morgenstern, obviously desperate to stay by her daughter's side.
"I'll be ok, Mom. Please. Just go," Ava requested urgently.
"Come on, Judy. I'll go with you. I promise you, Ava is in good hands," Topanga encouraged, putting an arm around the other woman. Finally, Judy agreed. She kissed her daughter on the forehead and allowed Topanga to lead her away.
KC hugged her friend and whispered, "I'll be right outside if you need me." Then she walked over to Olivia and quietly informed her, "Ava and her mom actually have a much better relationship than they used to. Mrs. Morgenstern is really trying to do better, but she's scared and maybe blaming herself. She's taking her fears and guilt out on Ava."
"I appreciate you telling me that. You're a good friend to that little girl, "Olivia responded.
KC looked down and quietly admitted, "I just...I understand what she's going through." With that, she exited the room without looking back. Olivia and Amanda sat next to the bed and Olivia gently asked,
"Ava, are you ok to answer a few questions? There's no pressure to talk, but it really would help us catch the person who did this."
"Okay," Ava replied timidly.
"Good. We'll start with that day. What do you remember?" Olivia inquired.
"I was walking home by myself because my boyfriend... at the time, Auggie Mathews, was suspended because he hit another boy for picking on our friend Aaron. Next thing I knew, I-I was grabbed from behind. Then I...I was pinned to the ground! I couldn't m-move!"
Amanda stroked Ava's hair and asked, "Do you know the boy who did this to you?"
Ava nodded, "It was Kevin, the boy who attacked Aaron. The one Auggie threw the rock at."
"You're doing great, Sweetie. What is Kevin's last name?" Olivia pressed.
Ava had tears streaming down her face by this point. "Michael. H-he held me down and p-pulled up my sk-skirt. He kicked me and pushed down on my chest so hard. He t-told me I deserved it. That Au-Auggie caused it. He s-said Auggie didn't love me. He f-forced himself inside of me. I didn't want to do it, but he...he made m-me. Then I g-got pregnant. He put a baby inside of me. I hate what he did...but for some reason...I think I want the baby. But it's my fault. I stupidly walked home alone. I walked into that situation. No one should ever want me now, I'm not worth it."
"Ava, this was NEVER your fault! Kevin lied to you. You deserve to be loved and happy and you deserve to live. Kevin will pay for what he did, but you did NOTHING wrong. You are beautiful and you have so many people who love you and want to support you. I could tell that the second I entered the lobby. Please don't shut out the ones who care about you. Don't let fear drive you away from the people you need and love the most," Olivia pleaded.
Ava looked at the woman as more tears gathered in her eyes. Then Olivia gathered the twelve-year-old in her arms as she began to sob. They rocked back and forth for a few moments before Amanda went out and got KC. Ava gave silent permission for Amanda to fill her older friend in. Once the entire story had been told, KC took Olivia's place on the bed and held her friend tightly while fighting back her own tears. Olivia walked out of the room to give them space.
"It isn't your fault, Ava," KC assured her. "He is a monster who deserves what's coming to him. Just like…"
"Derrick?" Ava questioned.
"Y-yeah."
So many memories flooded back into KC's head, and when the pain and memories got to be too much, KC texted Riley to come and relieve her.
"He or she is going to be like you," Ava told her. "The best person I've ever met."
KC smiled at her, with tears starting to slip from her eyes. Olivia walked back into the room.
Once Riley came into the room, KC got up and shakily uttered, "Excuse me," before quickly exiting the room.
Olivia watched her go, sensing that the young woman's pain was about more than empathy for her friend. The SVU captain caught her detective's eye and signaled that she was going after her. Amanda nodded in acknowledgment and Olivia strode out of the room and down the hall in the direction she had noticed KC was headed in, but once she got into the waiting room, KC was already gone, as well as the little boy she had seen before.
