Chapter 2: Fugitive
"Captain Singh please just put the phone down! Let me explain!" Barry pleaded.
Hearing her partners cries, Maggie rushed over to check on Barry.
"Barry, you alright, what's going on?"
As soon as she asked, she instinctively knew: Captain Singh knew Barry was a Meta.
"What's going on is that you're partner here is a fucking Metahuman!" David answered, furiously dialling the Cadmus hotline.
"Oh shit, oh shit" was all Barry could say as he paced back and forth, hands on his head, with panic written across his face.
Maggie couldn't bear seeing him like this, after all he'd sacrificed, all the times he'd risked his safety for her and Alex. It wasn't much but Maggie knew of only one thing she do to save her partner.
"Hey!" She shouted at David pulling his attention away from his phone.
'Here goes nothing I guess' she thought as she inhaled deeply.
"What, Sawyer?!" David snapped back only to be met with Maggie's fist colliding with his face.
"Fuck!" She exclaimed clutching her hand.
"What did you do?!" Barry asked in disbelief.
"I just saved your ass, now let's go!"
Barry cast one more sorrowful look at the crumpled heap that resembled David Singh, before picking up Maggie and speeding off towards his apartment.
"Hello?" Kara answered as chipper as always.
"Kara, thank god. It's Barry" The voice on the other side of the phone spoke.
"Barry! What a surprise! I wasn't expecting you until dinner"
"Dinner's gonna have to wait"
"Why, what's going on? And why aren't you calling me from your cell?" Kara asked starting to worry.
"I've been burned" Barry answered simply
"Are...are you sure?"
"Singh knows I'm a meta, he probably knows I'm The Flash, which means it's only a matter of time before Cadmus does"
"Oh my god! Where are you going to go?"
"I don't know yet, I'm going back to my apartment to grab a few things. I need you and Alex to grab what you can of yours and meet me near Star Labs. Oh, and pack a bag for Maggie"
"Maggie's there?"
"Hi Kara" Maggie greeted, hearing her name.
"You should have seen her, she punched David in the face" Barry complimented making Kara chuckle.
The distant wail of police sirens made Barry jump slightly, tightening his grip on the phone box.
"I should get going, Cadmus could swarm my apartment any minute" Barry informed Kara.
"Okay, Alex and I will meet you when we can. Be careful!"
"I will, I love you"
"I love you too"
Barry hung up the phone and pressed his head against the glass.
"It's gonna be okay, the Danvers are a strong bunch" Maggie reassured her best friend.
"I know, I just hate having to tear them away from their lives because of my mistake"
Immediately after Barry hung up the phone Kara stood up from her desk and started to walk to the elevator, stopping only to ask a favour of Nia Nal.
"Nia, can you cover for me with Cat, my boyfriend's in trouble?"
Nia gave Kara an understanding look.
"Sure, give Barry my best"
"Oh I will, he's certainly going to need it"
As soon as the elevator doors closed, Kara raced to hers and Alex's apartments to pack for their new lives as fugitives.
"What exactly do you need from here?" Maggie asked as her and Barry gathered his things from his apartment.
"Anything essential or anything that could be used to track me down"
Maggie picked up a photo of a redhead woman, a grey haired man (both of whom looked similar to Barry) and a young boy all smiling by a lake. She showed the photo to Barry, who seemed to stare at it longingly before nodding his head.
"Hey um, I didn't realise you and Kara were in the 'I love you' phase already, when did that start?" Maggie asked Barry, placing the photo in a backpack she had found.
"Uh.. about 3 months ago I think" Barry answered, collecting various items from around the apartment and storing them in his backpack.
"And you didn't tell me?!"
"You didn't tell me when you first told Alex you loved her"
"Touché"
A few minutes passed like this, it was almost as if they were simply two friends packing for a trip.
"Is that everything?" Maggie asked, looking around.
Barry pulled his backpack onto his shoulders.
"I think so yeah"
As they made their way to the door, Maggie noticed a gold ring with a lightning bolt emblem sitting on the kitchen counter.
"Hey what about this?" She asked, tossing the ring to Barry.
"Absolutely" Barry responded, slipping the ring onto his finger.
"Going somewhere?" James asked appearing in the doorway.
"I don't have time for this" Barry sighed and made to push past James.
"Are you sure about that Flash?"
Before he could think, Barry felt the lightning crackling around his left arm as he quickly brought his fist up to James' chin.
"So why do you and Kara still live in separate apartments?" Maggie inquired as her and Barry stepped over an unconscious James and left the apartment.
"We're actually looking for a place to buy together. It just didn't seem right either of us moving into the other's apartment"
"You two might actually be the sweetest couple"
The wind whistled through the chain link fence that surrounded what was left of Star Labs. Sat against the rubble, Barry and Maggie managed to get some semblance of rest before Kara and Alex joined them.
"Oh my god, you're okay!" Both Kara and Alex breathed a sigh of relief upon seeing Barry and Maggie in one piece. They pulled their significant others into a long embrace before quickly kissing them.
"So where to?" Kara asked, clutching Barry's hand.
"Oliver's old campaign office" Alex answered.
"Why, what's there beside a useless bunker?" Barry wondered.
"The Resistance"
