Most of us slept pretty soundly apart from a couple of restless sleepers. I think that was probably the best I've slept in a while, or at least it was until we all got rudely interrupted by Four.
"I want everyone in the Pit. Two minutes."
I, for one, was definitely not a morning person. Tris and Christina literally had to pull me out of bed. We all got dressed into our gear as quickly as possible and ran off into the Pit to meet Four, standing around waiting for us. My eyes drifted towards the body next to him, and I breathed in deeply. It looks like we had our work cut out of us. Four was an asshole, but Eric seemed calculating, and I definitely did not wanna get on his wrong side.
We all crowded together as Four started speaking.
"There are two stages of training. The first is physical; push your bodies to the breaking point and master the methods of combat. The second is mental, again breaking point; you'll face your worst fears and conquer them unless they get you first. You'll be trained separately from the Dauntless born, but you'll be ranked together."
Is there any point of being trained apart from Dauntless born if they're ranking us together?
" After initiations, rankings will determine what jobs you move into. Leadership, guarding the fence, or keeping the factions from killing each other."
"The rankings will also determine who gets cut." Eric's voice was sharp and cutthroat.
All of us started murmuring under our breath, and I furrowed my brows, trying to understand what he meant.
"Cut?" Christina asked.
Eric looked at her coldly. "At the end of each stage of training, the lowest ranking initiates will be leaving us."
"What?" I heard someone behind me, and I turned around to share their confused look.
"To do what?" Al replied.
"There's no going home to your families, so you'd live factionless." Eric stood up and walked over to our cluster, standing next to Four.
'Why didn't we know that?" Will asked.
"It's a new rule," Eric answered.
"A new rule? Somebody should've told us that," Christina added.
Eric squared his shoulders. "Why? Would you have chosen differently? Or out of fear?"
He paced the floor, his bright eyes glaring at each of us. I had to use all of my willpower not to back down.
"Well, if that's the case, you might as well get out now. If you're really one of us, it won't matter to you that you might fail. Now you chose us; now we get to choose you."
I didn't really know what to think after Eric told us that. It did kick me up the ass actually to be one of the best; I couldn't just sit by. We all glanced around at each other nervous glances before Eric's voice shouted at us once more.
"Let's start. Initiates follow us and try to keep up."
Four nodded at Eric, and they both took the front of us while we all attempted to figure out what they wanted us to do. They took off running, and we all followed behind them. Luckily, I enjoyed a nice run now and then, so I was at a steady pace in the middle next to Christina and Tris.
We panted as we watched silently as Four and Eric stopped by what I assumed was a perimeter guard. We all began talking to each other briefly, waiting for the following order. I turned my back as I slyly eavesdropped on what was going on.
"Hey, what have you got?" Four asked.
"Factionless. Not doing anything." He replied.
I tuned out just as Eric began speaking to them both. Our attention was diverted to Peter yet again.
"Check it out, stiff. That's gonna be your new family."
I watched as Tris didn't say anything at just glanced at them somberly.
"Go say hi." Peter laughed.
The blood slowly began to boil, and I really wish I didn't say anything as what followed wasn't pleasant.
"Peter, I swear to God-"
"Em, come on. I'm just having fun." He rolled his eyes, smiling.
I narrowed my eyes and shook my head.
"It wasn't funny the first time or the second time, and it sure as hell isn't funny now."
"Fuck Em, have you got laid since we-"
I stomped up to him.
"You better watch the next words that come out of your mouth," I warned him, my palms sweaty.
Peter laughed, and his head tipped back.
"Yeah, I'm gonna take that as a no." He slipped closer to me, our chests practically touching. "You know if you ever need me to reach the itch, you can't scratch…" He trailed off as he reached out to me.
I pursed my lips and grabbed his wrist, bending it backwards, and he yelled out in pain.
"What the fuck was that for!?"
"Initiate!"
I pushed Peter away from me roughly and glanced over as Four and Eric came bouldering over.
I was bewildered as they set their angry gazes on me.
I pointed at Peter. "He was being-
"This is not a playground, and you are not children. So stop acting like it!" Eric growled.
I opened my mouth in shock.
"What? Even if he-"
"Are you seriously backtalking a leader?" Eric raised his eyebrows warningly.
"I.."
"This was the one I told you about." Four murmured to Eric, and I narrowed my eyes.
"Ah, I see now. This is the other Candor who doesn't know who to keep her mouth shut."
I cannot believe this is actually happening.
My mouth was open in shock.
Eric squared his shoulders and looked down at me. "I want you to run around the block in less than two minutes."
"What?"
"Now. Go!"
I jumped at his tone and started running, and I looked back to see both Eric and Four with their arms folded watching me.
I didn't really have time to process anything, but I put my all into that fucking run.
Everyone stopped what they were doing as I burst through the doors to the Pit, sweaty and huffing. Four and Eric turned to me, and Eric looked at his watch.
"Impressive Initiate. Now pair up and get practising." Eric nodded to the group, and I swallowed nervously before making my way over to Will.
He looked at me apprehensively. "Hey."
I breathed in deep and nodded at him. "Hey. What is happening exactly?"
"Practising sparring. Just follow my lead."
I nodded in thanks and followed Will's stance. He threw a punch at me slowly, and I blocked him with my right. We followed that pattern for a few minutes until we were interrupted.
"First jumper in the ring. Last jumper, time to fight."
Will and I glanced at Tris, who looked at us nervously as she made her way to the ring. We didn't know the last jumper, but she did not look like she would take it easy, and I wrung my hands anxiously as we gathered around the edge.
"How long do we fight for?" The girl asked with little to no emotion in her voice.
"Till one of you can't continue," Eric replied coldly.
"Or one of you concedes." Four added.
Eric glared at Four. "According to the old rules. New rules, no one concedes."
I watched silently as the two engaged in a little heated argument as Four mumbled beneath his breath. Eric's reaction was icy as his jaw clenched.
"You'll be scored on this, so fight hard."
We observed as they danced around each other.
"Go." Ordered Eric.
The girl went towards Tris, who ended up backing out of the circle. She glanced at us, and all I could do was cross my fingers.
"Don't be scared stiff."
I gritted my teeth at Peter's remark.
Tris stepped back into the ring, and before she even had a chance, the other girl gripped Tris' arm and flew her to the ground. Tris held her head and gasped in shock, and I grabbed Will's hand, and he shared my anxiousness.
Tris got up and went to throw a punch, but the other girl blocked it and kicked her in the side and elbowed her in the face, and Tris was out cold.
"Tris!" I shouted and threw myself out of the crowd. I stopped as Eric's glare landed on me.
"She's done." He seemed to let this one slide as I ran to Tris and helped her up as she came round.
I hope you all enjoyed it. So we found out Peter and Emily used to be a thing. And had a little bit of back and forth between Emily and Eric. I know it might seem that there is something between Four and Emily, but there isn't. Four and Tris till the end. Four pisses Emily off.
