Here we are, back with another chapter. Enjoya boya.
Eighty Pokedollars a night. That was how much it was going to cost me to stay at the hotel I was directed to. In total, two hundred and forty pokedollars. It cleared out more than half the money I had in total, but at the very least three meals a day were included, both for me and any pokemon I had.
Which was good because I was starving when I got there and checked in. And both Vibrava and Misdreavus were too it seemed. It wasn't a shock to see Vibrava nibble at the bowl of food placed down in front of it, but it definitely was to see the ghost eat. I wasn't even sure a ghost type needed to eat, but hey I'm no expert.
I had the concierge wake me up bright and early the next morning. The first thing I did, was head out to the pawn shop the nice lady from last night told me about and pawned off the extra wallet and PDA I had. It netted me an extra two hundred and five pokedollars. Not exactly a lot again, but it rose my money up just a bit, which was sorely needed.
From there, I headed to a local clothing store and bought a very cheap sleeveless white hoodie. The weather was incredibly warm in Orre, so I wanted something light, and I only had to change out of the red vest to change my look from Team Snagem to normal person.
Once that was taken care of, I hopped in my truck and drove to the outskirts of the city. I had two more days until the Phenac Colosseum Tournament. It was my best bet for getting enough money to see me by quickly.
"Come out, Vibrava, Misdreavus." I said, releasing the two pokemon from their pokeballs once I found a good spot for my purposes.
The two pokemon appeared in front of me in twin flashes of light and rigidly stood awaiting my commands. They were honestly like angry robots, there was no passion or anything in them beyond the urge to obey me and the desire to battle.
"Right you two, it's time to do some training." I grinned at them.
They didn't reply, or even bat a eye.
Well, not that I expected them to. I held up my hands and showed off what I was carrying, specifically, what I'd also taken when I found the Snag Machine. Specifically, the thick sets of rope that had secured the box it was kept in.
And the reason why I chose this specific area. Really, it wasn't any different for the most part than any other place outside Phenac City. Sand, sand and more sand. But, there were tons of rocks of various sizes.
I picked out a pair of fairly large ones, about twice the size of my head and wrapped the ropes around them, before doing the same to Vibrava's wings. The dragon and ground type didn't even bat an eye and just let me do it, staying perfectly still. And you wouldn't know by looking, but Vibrava's wings aren't at all like a dragonfly's, they're absolutely rock solid.
It made things easier, but by god was it weird.
Once I was done with that, I stood up and looked down at Vibrava, "Right, what I want you to do, is fly about as much as you can with these tied to your wings," I explained, "Go for as long as you can, but if it really starts to hurt, take a break and rest."
"Brrr." Vibrava made a vibrating sound with its mouth, before rapidly flittering its wings and rising up into the air. It stopped short for a moment as the ropes pulled taut between the large rocks and its wings, and it took a few seconds as Vibrava began straining, wings becoming a blur of speed before the rocks began to bit by bit lift slowly into the air, even as an angry buzzing sound escaped Vibrava's small mouth.
I watched it go for a bit, ever so slowly circling around the area from the air, 'Hopefully this works.' I mused. I'm totally stealing the principle behind training to learn Iron Tail from Ash.
I turned away from Vibrava a minute later and looked down at my other pokemon. The feminine looking ghost type just staring at me, awaiting my orders. 'Well at least it isn't snarling and looking everywhere it can for a fight.' I chuckled inwardly, reaching up to run a hand through my hair.
"Alright, I'm gonna be honest, I have no idea how to train a ghost type like you," I admitted with a shrug, "So, we're just gonna wing it. What I want you to do is just keep firing off your attacks one after another, try and make them bigger and stronger pack more energy into them. And if you can, try and grab things with the same energy you use for Psybeam by spreading the energy out around them maybe?"
Misdreavus stared at me for a moment, before simply nodding and floating up into the air and turning away from me, twin beams of multi-coloured energy erupting from its eyes and slamming into the sand, kicking up a massive cloud of it.
I watched them both train and frowned, "A pokedex sure would be helpful right about now." I hummed.
Oh well, work with what you have right? All things considered, seeing as I woke up in the middle of the desert yesterday with nothing but my boxers, I'm doing pretty well for myself.
And this place sure is convenient. Not one person has stopped to ask me why a fifteen year old is driving around in a truck or ask me where my non-existent parents are or something like that. The busybodies back in my old world were a total buzzkill like that.
Phenac City really is a beautiful place. There's little graffiti or rubbish at all, the colouring of the buildings - houses, shops and more were all a gleaming white while the streets were perfectly aligned and practically gleaming, and even the roads themselves were of light colour to match the city. It was a city of white cleanliness, and to add to the beauty of it, there were many sprawling canals filled with glistening clean water.
It's honestly too bad I can't really take the time to properly explore it and take in its splendor. I spent most of my time over the next few days between my hotel room and the training spot I'd picked out to train my two pokemon.
I was trying to draw as little attention as possible.
Which meant, it honestly left me with very little to do beyond watch television in my hotel room or just sit with my pokemon. I ended up doing both for the most part, beyond having the two train as much as possible.
I'll tell you this. As much as I dislike the concept of Shadow Pokemon, I cannot deny that they are utter machines when it comes to battling and training. They had absolutely no chill when it came to even a practice battle and they trained until they dropped. If I didn't specifically stop them, they would wait till they could move even slightly, and get right back to it.
And it produced results, that was for sure. Vibrava actually managed to get Steel Wing down, or at least I think it did. Its wings would glow a metallic silver and it cut right through a rock with one of them. And while Misdreavus didn't get Psychic as I was hoping for, its attacks had certainly got bigger and fired them off faster.
On the third day of my stay in Phenac City, I found myself at the very end of the town and walking up a splendorous and grandiose staircase, up towards a massive dome shaped building that I couldn't pull my eyes from even if I tried.
It was a glittering white dome shaped building sprouting up from the middle of a small lake of glistening water. From behind it, a glistening waterfall fell down the edge of the city walls, while water itself sprayed from the edges of the dome shaped buildings roof like a fountain.
It was in a word, beautiful.
I've never seen a building so beautiful in my life. And it really begged the question on how it was made, especially in a shithole like Orre, in the middle of a desert. I'm assuming pokemon were involved though.
I made my way up the stairs, walking through the massive throngs of people making their way to the colosseum themselves. Excitement was palpable in the air, everyone was psyched for the monthly colosseum tournament.
From what I could tell, it seemed like the Colosseum battles were like sports events, and generally one of the few community-wide recreational activities had at all. Which explained its popularity, especially with how rare pokemon seemed in this region.
Like honestly, it would be lucky if one in ten people here had a single pokemon.
I paused and gazed around in open awe when I entered the Phenac Stadium. Even the inside was a beautiful and filled with water.
A path led in to the building, leading up towards a desk with a pretty blonde haired woman sitting behind it, another short path behind her that led over a small pond of water to a door. While in front of the desk, the path towards it split into two, winding around to two massive open doorways that the people all around me were making their way through. Most likely then, towards the stands for the fans to watch the colosseum battles.
I made my way over to the the woman behind the desk, "Hello, how may I help you sir?" she smiled prettily and asked politely.
"Heya," I gave her a small wave and a smile back, "I'm here to sign up for the tournament, if that's possible?"
She blinked, before her smile widened, "Yes, that's fine," she replied, "I'll just need to know your name and what pokemon you will be using." as she said that, she turned to the computer on her desk and began pulling up some kind of registration form.
I quickly let her know my name and the two pokemon I would be using. And then she finished up quite quickly and bid me to follow her along the path behind the desk.
The door opened as we approached it, revealing a wide spacious hallway with multiple doors that lead along towards a large staircase where I could hear the loud intermingling and loud voices of hundreds or more people.
She led me towards one of the doors and opened it for me, revealing a standard looking locker room with lockers, a bench and the like. "With you registered, we now have eight trainers competing, and it will be a three round tournament unless anyone else turns up," she explained, before gesturing to the locker room, "This will be your locker room for the tournament. When your name is called over the intercom system, please make your way up the staircase to the end of the hallway and enter the stadium, then, if you win, you will return there until your name is called for your next match."
"Gotcha." I grinned and flashed her a thumbs up before entering the locker room, making my way over to the bench and taking a seat on it.
"Well, I wish you good luck Jett," she bowed her head lightly, "Goodbye." and then she pulled the door shut and left me alone.
I leaned back on my hands and stared up at the pristine white ceiling of the locker room, 'So double battles, huh?' I mused, the receptionist had explained to me that the tournament was fought in a doubles format and participants needed at least two pokemon to participate. It was a good thing I'd managed to nab both Vibrava and Misdreavus from those Snagem losers, otherwise I wouldn't be able to compete.
It at least explained why the numbers competing were so low. If it was lucky that one in ten in Phenac had a pokemon, maybe a fifth of those at most had two, and even less had more than that.
All things considered, I wasn't waiting too long before my name was called out from an intercom system hanging above the doorway, maybe a half hour, forty minutes at most.
I got up and left the locker room behind, making my way along the hallway and up the staircase. When I got the top, I paused and just took in the battlefield. It was quite the sight.
A large circular battlefield floating in the middle of a lake of water, the only path to it being connected to the staircase I just came out of.
My eyes landed on my apparent opponent. A tall brown haired boy, looking a few years older than me dressed in an orange jacket and blue shorts. He was already waiting at one side of the battlefield.
I made my way across the path to the battlefield, idly taking in the hundreds of fans cheering from above, arranged in stands in a circular pattern up above the battlefield.
"Hey," my opponent smirked at me, spinning a pokeball on his finger, "The names Rewin kid, sorry that I'm gonna be knocking you out of the tournament this early, but that's just your bad luck."
I stared at him, bemused. Trash talk already? "Whatever you say, scrub," I snorted, reaching into one of the small black boxes hanging from my belt and bringing out the two pokeballs within, "We'll see if you can back up your barking or if you're just an idiot in a minute."
He glared at me, but before he could say anything else. A female voice rang echoed out over the stadium and declared the beginning of the battle, ordering us to send out our pokemon.
I clicked the buttons on the pokeballs, and released Vibrava and Misdreavus in front of me, while Rewin flamboyantly tossed his pokeballs into the air, his own two pokemon bursting out a moment later in twin flashes of light.
Revealing, a small thin blue bat and a squat little green pokemon with thorns jutting out of its body and a small golden crown on its head. Zubat, and Cacnea.
"Zubat quickly Wing Attack on that Vibrava! Cacnea, help him out with Needle Arm!" Rewin jumped into action and immediately ordered his pokemon to gang up on my dual dragon and ground type, most likely seeing it as the biggest threat.
Zubat flapped its wings and shot towards my pair pokemon, wings glowing white, while Cacnea launched itself behind it, one arm winding back and swinging like a windmill as it began glowing with bright green power.
"Looks like we're off to an explosive start folks!" the lady who called my name over the intercom system and ordered the beginning of the battle began commentating, "It looks like Rewin wants to take Vibrava out quickly!"
"Psybeam on the Zubat," I countered quickly, before looking to Vibrava, "You go full power on the Cacnea, hit it with Dragonbreath."
My pokemon made no indication that they heard me. No nods or aything like that. They just both shot forward. Multicoured light flashed into existence from Misdreavus' eyes and exploded forward in twin beams of psychic power, both larger than the Zubat was tall and washed over the flying and poison type before it could react.
Vibrava spun and flew up above the twin beams, while the Cacnea was forced to hastily dodge out of the way. With a rabid flutter of its four wings, Vibrava scythed down from above, flames of green and yellow building up between its lips.
A moment later, Vibrava unleashed its attack, firing a torrent of draconic energy in the shape of flames. Cacnea yelped and jumped back, narrowly avoiding the flames, but only for a moment because as they splashed against the floor, they spread out like a small wave and surged over the small grass type.
And when both of my pokemon cut off their attacks and they dissipated away. It was to show both Zubat and Cacnea both spread out on the ground, limp.
"No way..." Rewin slumped to his knees and stared open mouthed in shock at the state of his two pokemon, while my own pair merely flew back to me and took up position in front of me.
There was silence for a moment, before the crowd erupted into explosive applause and cheering. I felt a smirk spread across my face, victory felt ever so sweet. I raised a clenched fist up into the air and basked in the praise of the hundreds of people staring down at me, "Well done you two," I praised the two pokemon in front of me, "You were fantastic."
The only response I got from them were a pair of grunts as they looked at me out of the corner of their eyes, pretty much in synch, they were.
"...Well then, it seems Rewin's own tactic was turned on him and both of his own pokemon were taken out in an instant!" the commentator lady spoke up, "The winner of this battle is Jett! He'll be moving on to the next round with the other three contestants that won their battles!"
I was just about to return my two pokemon and return to my locker room to wait for the next round, when she poke up again, "Now, let's see shall we? Who is battling next!" she continued.
I heard a beeping sound coming from above, and a moment later, a wide screen lowered down over the entrance to the battlefield at the staircase from the ceiling. It lit up with letters on either side, separated by a large 'Vs' sign.
A moment later, it settled.
Glais Vs Jett
"Oooh! And it looks like the home favourite Glais is up against our explosive newcomer Jett!" the commentator cheered excitedly herself, "We haven't seen much from Jett folks, but his Misdreavus and Vibrava have shown explosive power so far, and as you know, our very own Glais from Phenac City is a three time winner of this very tournament!"
Well shit. Looks like I may actually be in for a tough battle this time.
At the very least, I didn't need to bother with returning to the locker room. Rewan trudged away down the staircase with a devastated look on his face, and a few moments later, a handsome young man dressed in a smart white shirt, black tie and brown slacks made his way up the stairs, smart rectangular glasses covering his eyes and wavy tousled brown hair on his head.
The crowd got even wilder at his appearance, and he smiled and waved at everyone cheering for him. I think I heard even one girl literally 'squee' when he winked at her.
"Well now, that last match didn't last very long at all, huh?" Glais chuckled lightly, pushing his glasses up as they slipped down the bridge of his nose a bit, turning to me. He stared at my two pokemon intently as he took up position across from us, "A Vibrava huh? Quite the rare pokemon in these parts, dragon types are known as the most powerful type of pokemon after all. It seems I'll have to go all out if I want to get to the final round and reclaim my title as winner of the Phenac Colosseum."
Reclaim huh? So that means somebody must have beaten him and ended his winning streak. And if the way he talked was any indication, the same person was competing as well? "You can try." I shrugged, having nothing else to say.
"Now, let's get the second round underway!" the commentator lady announced, to the delight of the crowd, "Glais, please send out your own pokemon!"
"Hmm," Glais hummed, before reaching down to pull two pokeballs from his slacks pocket and calmly sending them out, "Starmie, Shiftry come on out."
'Shit!' my eyes widened as the pair of dual types appeared in front of him on the other side of the battlefled. One a humanoid with a brown body and flowing white hair, looking like a tengu, while the other a large purple starfish with a gleaming ruby-like gem in the centre framed by gold.
...This went from 5 to 100 real quick.
"Get ready." I ordered both my pokemon. As far as type match up and evolutionary forms went, this guy had the advantage.
"Focus on the ghost first!" Glais immeadiately shouted to his pokemon, "Shiftry, Quick Attack into Night Slash! Starmie, follow behind and provide cover, keep the Vibrava from helping with Ice Beam!"
Shiftry exploded forward in a blur so fast I could barely see it, a trial of white energy coming from its back thrusting it forward, while the Starmie lifted into the air and shot after it, spinning through the air like a frisbee.
"Underground Misdreavus, hit it with Confuse Ray!" I frantically countered, "Supersonic, keep them back!"
The Shiftry covered most of the distance in the time it took me to rapidly say my orders, it was forced to jump and not continue though when Vibrava opened its mouth and let loose large sound waves of orange energy, each one as wide and tall as five men, the Starmie following suit, while Misdreavus sunk down into the ground and phased through it, disappearing from sight.
Ghost types like Misdreavus were pretty useful like that, able to phase through solid objects and even take up space in a shadow of all things.
"Switch to Vibrava, Ice Beam, Leaf Blade!" Glais switched his orders quickly.
Icy blue energy formed in front of Starmie's ruby-red gem and formed into a trio of jagged energy beams that shot down towards Vibrava, while the same white light exploded from Shiftry's geta-like feet and it kicked off the very air itself and shot down towards Vibrava, the leaves of its hands glowing green and lengthening into a trio of blades on each hand.
A memory flashed in my head. A Hawlucha cutting through Trick Room with X-scissor.
"Steel Wing on the Ice Beam!" I blurted out on instinct.
Vibrava zoomed up into the air at my words, wings taking on a metallic silver glow and it met the trio of jagged icy blue beams head on, and to my glee, began to cut right through them!
"Shift!" Shiftry came from above, arms pulled back and prepared to slash, and my tongue froze in my mouth, unable to think of anything to do. Vibrava though, did not.
The dual dragon and ground type jerked its wings and to my shock and awe, the trio of ice type beams it was cutting through, were instead directed upwards.
"Ryyyyy!" the Shiftry bellowed in pain as its teammates own attack was redirected into it and slammed into its chest. Ice formed bit by bit over its chest and the green energy on its hands receded and the the leaves returned to normal.
Just then, a dark blur shot up from the ground, and Misdreavus appeared, reaching up to Starmie in a split moment, eyes glowing crimson and began lighting up the air
Starmie's Ice Beam cut off a split moment later and it began to rapidly spin in a circle. And then Vibrava without any prompting from me, opened its mouth and spat out a a familiar gout of green and yellow flame.
Shiftry's roars of pain intensified and it dropped out of the air to slam into the ground face first, half its torso frozen over.
"Oh no!" Glais cried out, and I just stared, barely able to follow the speed at things just went. And wait, since when would Vibrava attack anything without me ordering? I gave myself a shake as I saw Glais lifting his pokeball towards Starmie, "Ret-"
"Mean Look!" I rapidly shouted up to Misdreavus, just as he finished and a beam of red light shot from the pokeball up to Starmie.
Not quite fast enough though. Misdreavus' eyes lit up with a purple glow this time, and an outline of purple energy suffused around Starmie's form. The beam of red light bouncing off of the water and psychic type a split moment later.
"No!" Glais's eyes widened in horror behind his glasses.
"Crunch!" I laughed, pumping a fist up in the air towards the confused Starmie, unable to contain my glee.
Vibrava shot up higher into the air, an orange aura coating its form and condensing around its mouth and fangs. A moment later, it slammed into Starmie hard and sunk its fangs into the dual water and psychic type and began to ragdoll it around viciously. It kept it up for a few moments, before turning and tossing it towards the ground.
"Shadow Ball!" I followed up.
Starmie slammed into the ground a few dozen feet away from Shiftry, and a moment later, Misdreavus dipped low, a sphere of purple energy sparking with dark electricity formed in front of it, growing to the same size as its body, before being shot down to slam into the Starmie and then exploding on impact.
When the smoke cleared, Starmie was completely limp, the ruby-red gem face it had, darkened in colour, having lost all its lustre.
And the best of it was. Its body was still encased in the purple glow of Mean Look. Meaning, Glais can't bring it back to switch it!
I turned my eyes to Shiftry then, the grass and dark type feebly struggling up on hands and knees, "Finish it off, Dragonbreath and Shadow Ball!" I ordered my own two pokemon.
"Wait, wait!" Glais suddenly called, "I give up!"
Eh? I blinked.
My two pokemon were forming their attacks still though. I hurriedly ordered them to stop, "Stop attacking!" I called out to them, and they immediately halted.
"Thank you" Glais smiled at me, lifting a pokeball and bringing back Shiftry, before making his way over to pick up Starmie.
"Why'd you give up?" I asked, curious.
He shrugged, "I want to win, but there's no point in continuing when I know I'm gonna lose," he smiled at me, "I have one pokemon left, but he'd be at a big disadvantage against your two pokemon that haven't even taken a hit, and I'm not gonna make Shiftry keep fighting just to get hurt anymore when he can't even fight back at this point."
Huh. I can't say I was expecting to meet someone who actually cared that much for their pokemon in Orre. "Good call," I found myself smiling back at him. This guy actually deserves some respect, "The right call even. You're pretty amazing huh?"
Above us, the commentator announced me as the winner, to the applause of the crowd. I waved at them alongside Glais, and we both vacated the battlefield to let the next two come up.
"I wouldn't say amazing, it's just something that any person with pokemon should do," the bespectacled man chuckled, "Though, apparently rare. And if I'm right, your next opponent definitely wouldn't do it no matter how beat up his pokemon get."
I paused on the stairs we were both walking down, "Oh?" I hummed, raising an eyebrow in interest.
He paused as well and gave me a nod, "Yes, if he doesn't lose, and I'm doubtful he will, your next opponent is going to be a man by the name of Niver, a completely violent thug," Glais' face drew up in disgust, "He defeated me at the tournament last month in the finals and returned for this one, he only had two pokemon then, I don't know if he has any more now, but the pair of them were incredibly powerful."
"What kind of pokemon?" I asked. If I know what he uses, I can make a plan in advance.
Glais eyed me with a frown before sighing, "His first pokemon is an absurdly fast and strong Grovyle, it defeated my Shiftry in one shot last month using X-scissor, and made quick work of Starmie with Leaf Blade," he revealed, before looking around almost suspicious and leaning forward closer to me, carefully angling his Starmie close to his chest, "His other pokemon is weird. A Graveler. But not like any I've ever seen, it was like a fighting machine, didn't response to anything at all beyond his orders and there was hesitation, it even used an attack I've never heard of before."
Holy shit some dude has a Grovyle here? What a lucky bastard, "What kind of attack?" I asked though, focusing on the info of the Graveler.
"He called it Shadow Rush," Glais revealed and my eyes widened, "It hit my Raichu with it and dealt so much damage by combining it with Rollout, then finished him off with a Hammer Arm."
He pat me on the shoulder and wished me luck, and disappeared down the corridor leaving me to return to my locker room.
'This could be a problem.' I frowned as I sat down on the bench within my locker room, looking down at the device wrapped around my right arm. It was risky bringing it with me. But I didn't dare leave it in my truck or back at my hotel room. I didn't want it anywhere I didn't have my eye on it.
