Apparently, at the time I was visiting kdog2201's discord server, I found out someone was working on a manga for his story. Like, how insane is that? This story got so much attention it got a manga adaption for it! Mind blowing.

Anyway, I'm in a bit of good mood so here you have it.

Enjoy.

Chapter 1:

"Fish out of Water"

Kay Readers: "Ugh..."

Kay had been walking down the road for hours, it was now midday and the sun felt sweltering on Kay's head.

Kay Readers: "Why is it so hot!? Why did I eat those berries? Why are there no towns!? Why did I eat those berries?!"

There was still thick forest on both sides of the road which didn't help Kay spot any kind of civilization.

Kay Readers: "Well, at least the sun is normal...which is hot...(-_-)... Oh CRAP!"

With a grumble coming from his midsection, Kay gripped his stomach and ran into the foliage on the side of the road. A few moments later he emerged more depressed than before.

Kay Readers: "Mental note: Never eat random berries in a forest of another world...or any world...I might be dying...(Q_Q)"

Kay continued down the road for what seemed like forever, answering the frequent "call of nature" in occasion. After a few more hours Kay noticed a small column of smoke rising above the trees.

Kay Readers: "Huh? Smoke? Smoke! Yes! Finally! People!"

Kay started to lightly jog further down the road and eventually ran into the entrance to the town. Even though the town was small, it was surrounded by a reinforced wooden wall that had a few guard towers dotted along it. Kay could tell that each tower was manned by a guard and to his relief, they appeared human.

Kay Readers: "I guess the walls are for those creatures that I ran into earlier..."

Getting closer, Kay managed to spot a sign that displayed the name of the small town.

Trist

Kay Readers: "Okay. Okay. This is good. It's a language I can understand. No need for more language learning, this is perfect."

Kay was relieved that in this dimension, not only did he understand the language but there were also regular actual humans in it. The chances of both of those things happening weren't exactly common in his experience.

As Kay approached the town, one of the guards noticed his approach and alerted his fellow guardsmen. When Kay got to the gate, it opened and a small group of guards armed with weapons and in light armor came out, startling Kay.

Town Guard: "Hey kid! Are you alright?"

Kay Readers: "Wha-!? Uh...yeah?"

After giving that response, another guard pushed further.

Town Guard: "'Uh..yeah'!? Are you really okay!? Did you even see what happened over there!?"

Kay Readers: "Uh..."

Town Guard: "How did you even avoid all the Grimm!?"

Kay Readers: "Uh..."

Slowly the guards began to crowd Kay and started overwhelming him with questions, of which were coming too fast. He couldn't really process anything as his eyes swirl around in confusion.

?: "Hey! Give the kid some space!"

A loud voice cut through and instantly silenced the guards. Slowly, an older man, with an air of authority, approached the group of people.

?: "You guys need to calm down!"

The man was definitely older than the other guards and wore slightly heavier armor than the guards he seemed to command. His face showed age and had a well maintained beard. But what really stood out to Kay were the two antlers coming out from the top of his head.

Kay Readers: "(._.) Antlers...?"

The man motioned for the guards to back up and turned to Kay.

?: "Sorry about that, kid."

Kay Readers: "(._.) No problem..."

Because Kay looked so astonished and also confused, the man let out a sigh.

?: "Haa, see!? You guys overwhelmed him with your questions!"

The other guards looked a little ashamed and remorseful.

Emilio: "My name's Emilio, Emilio Krane. I guess you could call me the head guard here."

Kay Readers: "Nice...to meet you... I'm Kay Readers."

Emilio: "Well, nice to meet you Kay. Let's start from the beginning, how are you fee-"

Before Emilio could finish his question, Kay's stomach made a audible groan, causing him to clutch his stomach.

Kay Readers: "Oh no...(Q_Q)"

Emilio: "...you ate the berries, didn't you?"

Kay Readers: "(Q_Q)"

Emilio made a sympathetic smile and motioned for Kay to follow him.

Emilio: "Let's head inside, we have medicine for that."

Kay nodded and the group made their way inside the town of Trist.

A Little While Later

Blacksmith Shop of Trist

The sound of the toilet flushing can be heard in the distance.

Kay Readers: "Ugh..."

Kay got out of the bathroom, his stomach still churning, but otherwise feeling slightly better.

Emilio: "Don't worry kid, it'll pass."

Kay Readers: "Thanks..."

Now more relaxed, Kay looked around and got a better look at exactly where he was. Instead of some kind of police station or barracks, Kay found himself in a blacksmith's shop. The building smelled like metal and hot iron, and the shelves were filled with different kinds of tools and weapons. Emilio, who was now sitting in his dining room noticed Kay looking around.

Emilio: "It ain't much to look at, but it gets the job done...ah right."

Emilio gave Kay a batch of small pills that were wrapped in a napkin.

Emilio: "Take those once a day for a few days and your stomach problems should clear up."

Kay Readers: "Thanks (;_;)"

Emilio: "How old are you, kid?"

Kay took a moment to think, it had actually been awhile since he had to tell someone his age. And to be frank, he had travelled from world to world so much that it's actually been fairly difficult to keep track.

Kay Readers: "I just turned 17, why?"

Emilio: "A 17-year old kid traveling the wilds of Remnant by himself is rather strange..."

Kay Readers: "It is? (Q_Q)"

Emilio looked at Kay's expression and relaxed a bit.

Emilio: "You really aren't from here, are you?"

Kay Readers: "No..."

Emilio: "So, where ARE you from?"

Kay Readers: "Um...not here?"

Emilio: "Don't know where you're from, huh?"

Emilio took a glance at Kay's worn and torn armor.

Emilio: "Looking at your armor, I would have thought that you're from Vacuo. But then again, that's a LONG way from here...which leads me to believe that you're either a kid from a smaller town out west or...you're from a bandit group."

Kay Readers: "(Q_Q) I look like a bandit?"

Emilio gave a small chuckle.

Emilio: "If you really were a bandit, you'd know not to eat some random berries in the forest."

Kay Readers: "I was hungry..."

Emilio: "How in Remnant you've survived so long is a mystery. And speaking of 'surviving', are you doing okay?"

Kay Readers: "I mean, other than making the incredibly poor choice of eating random berries in the forest? I feel fine."

Emilio: "Really?"

Emilio put his hand to his chin and looked at Kay with concern.

Emilio: "Kid, last night the whole town was shaken from their sleep due to a quake and the sound of an explosion in the distance."

Kay Readers: "Uh..."

At the mention of that, Kay began to sweat profusedly.

Emilio: "And not long after that, the people on guard duty saw an enormous swarm of Grimm rushing down the very road you came from."

Kay Readers: "Grimm? You mean those things that tried to eat me last night?"

Emilio: "So I gotta know, kid...are you really, really okay?"

Emilio was more stern in his question.

Kay Readers: "Oh crap, oh crap, oh crap! (Q_Q)"

Kay Readers: "Okay, okay!

Kay let out a sigh to calm himself down.

Kay Readers: "Look, as I was walking down the road I felt the quake too! Eventually I saw those monsters approaching and I hid in a bush. All of them just ran past me!"

Emilio looked at Kay, mulling over his story.

Kay Readers: "Please work (Q_Q)"

Emilio gave a sigh and his lips curved a bit to form a slight smile.

Emilio: "Well aren't you the luckiest kid I've ever met?"

Kay Readers: "I'm not entirely sure if he's mocking me, or actually being honest...(-_-)"

Emilio's demeanor changed instantly and his rather rustic cheer came back.

Emilio: "Now, seeing as how that's taken care of; where are you headed, Kay?"

Kay Readers: "To be honest, I don't even know where I am at the moment."

Emilio: "Well, we can fix that. One sec."

The older man rose from his chair and walked around the corner into the hallway, leaving Kay alone. Taking this chance, Kay decided to look around.

Kay Readers: "This place seems nice."

Glancing around Kay noticed that along with the usual furniture that you'd find in a home, there were also some small faintly glowing...crystals?

Kay Readers: "Huh...wonder what these are?"

The crystals dimly glowed and were in different colors. Red, blue, grey, green, not only were there different colors but there were a lot of them. Looking around, Kay found that some of those same colors were coming from some bullet casings that were on the shelves.

Kay Readers: "Well, I'd be rather disappointed if there wasn't some kind of magical element in this world."

As Kay was looking at the vials and bullets, Emilio came back with a large rolled up piece of paper.

Emilio: "Here we go. Oh, hey. Be careful with that, those Dust bullets are pretty volatile."

Kay Readers: "Gah!"

Kay hurriedly place the bullet back on its shelf, causing Emilio a laugh a bit.

Emilio: "Don't worry kid, they're not THAT volatile."

Kay: "My heart (Q_Q)"

Emilio: "Okay, come over here."

Emilio unwrapped the paper and revealed a map which of what Kay assumed to be the overview of this world.

Emilio: "Okay, kid. This right here is Vale, one of the four kingdoms of Remnant. And we are...here, southwest of Vale itself."

Kay looked at the map and where Emilio had pointed to. Emilio's finger was a little ways south of the symbol of the symbol with two axes.

Kay Readers: "Well, I guess going to Vale would be a good place to start to look for my way home."

Kay Readers: "Um...how far is Vale by foot from here?"

Emilio: "Hm, if you're going by foot it'll probably take you...I'd say a week. Two tops."

Kay Readers: "(Q_Q)...I am dying here."

Emilio: "So you're headed to Vale? Wait a minute, are you going to Beacon Academy?"

Kay Readers: "What?"

Emilio: "You planning on becoming a Hunstman?"

Kay Readers: "A-what?"

Emilio: "Then again, I don't know any kind of Huntsmen that would eat a bunch of random berries in a forest."

Kay Readers: "Do you have to bring that up again? (;_;)"

Emilio: "Haha. Sorry, sorry. Well, if that's where you're headed, then that's going to be quite the journey."

Kay Readers: "Yeah..."

Emilio: "You got the Grimm between here and there."

Kay Readers: "Wait, what?"

Emilio: "And I wouldn't be surprised if you also ran into bandits."

Kay Readers: "Bandits? (Q_Q)"

Emilio: "And..."

Kay Readers: "And...?"

Emilio glanced up at Kay with a small smirk on his face.

Emilio: "And more berries."

Kay Readers: "Berries!?"

Kay flinched back in horror before he processed what he had just repeated, quickly realizing the smirk on Emilio's face.

Kay Readers: "Wait, hey! It was a moment of weakness!"

Emilio: "I'm just messing with ya, kid. But actually, there are edible berries down that way if that is of any reassurance for you."

Kay Readers: "No thanks...(-_-)"

Emilio: "Don't worry kid, I won't send you off without some supplies for you."

Kay blinked, surprised at Emilio's unexpected excessive kindness.

Kay Readers: "You'd do that for a complete stranger like me?"

Emilio smiled and nodded.

Emilio: "Of course. We don't get a lot of travelers around here and even fewer that are so young like yourself. Besides, after everything I've seen, I don't think you'd survive the trip without them."

Kay Readers: "(-_-) Thanks..."

Emilio: "For now, you can rest here until you feel better. Then you can be on your way to Vale."

Kay Readers: "Thanks, really."

Emilio: "No problem, kid. Follow me, I'll show you to your room."

Later that Night

Emilio's Blacksmith Shop

Kay was using the bath to clean himself from his long travels.

Kay Readers: "Ahhhh~! This feels nice!"

Soon Kay got out of the bath and looked at himself in the mirror, revealing his torso to the slightly misty room. Kay sighed as he stared at his body again, examining every parts of it.

Kay Readers: "(-_-) I wonder if this place has any super anti-scars cream..."

While Kay was well built, a lot of his body were covered in scars, courtesy of the endless conflicts and adventures he had been on. There were scars of all sorts on him, cuts, bite marks, bullet holes, fire scars, and the works. As a result, Kay became self-conscious of his body as not many people would view his wounds as normal. He also didn't like talking about how he got them.

Kay sighed. He got dressed and left the bathroom.

The room that Emilio gave to Kay, though not well furnished, still had a bed and small night stand which was more than enough for him. The room was also just across the hall from the bathroom, which Kay appreciated the most. It was night and most of the town was in their homes resting, including Emilio. Finding himself alone, Kay opened a window and looked outside. Even though most of the town was asleep, there were still guards on the towers, and patrolling the streets.

Kay Readers: "This place doesn't seem too bad..."

Kay looked at the moon and sighed.

Kay Readers: "Haa, It's nice to run into people that are so kind for once, and not demanding something from me...Vale huh? Why do I have an intense feeling of foreboding when I think of that place...?"

That Night

Beacon Academy

In his office, Professor Ozpin—the head master of Beacon Academy—was finishing writing a message to Qrow Branwen on his console. After waiting a moment, he hit send and the message disappeared from his screen. As it was sent, he sighed. He leaned back in his chair and looked out the window toward the horizon.

After a few minutes, Glynda Goodwitch entered the room.

Glynda: "I received your message, what's going on?"

Ozpin: "I'm not sure."

Glynda: "You're "not sure"...? What's gotten you like this?"

Ozpin: "Last night, I discovered, or rather, I felt something strange appear in the wilderness, southwest of Vale."

Glynda: "'Something strange'?"

Ozpin: "Indeed."

Glynda: "Is it something we should be worried about?"

Ozpin: "I'm...not sure. For now, however, I called Qrow back here."

Glynda: "You're calling him back? Then there must be more to this 'something strange' you sensed."

Ozpin: "I believe you're right and I have a feeling that things are about to change around here..."
