Chapter 2: How Do I Escape From This Dream?

Marshall's POV

I slowly opened my eyes and yawned, stretching out my legs. I didn't know how long I had slept. I looked around, observing that I appeared to be in a hospital room. It puzzled me, however, as to why there were ceiling tiles mere inches from my face.

"Whaaaa?" I blurted out. I looked down, noting I was about 8 feet above the floor.

"How did I get on the ceiling?" I wondered. I don't remember climbing any ladder. And why wasn't I falling? I would have surely face-planted on the floor if gravity was working.

What I saw next was even more shocking.

There was a pup laying in a hospital bed with wires and tubes coming out of every inch of his body. There were bandages covering his head, and he was completely unconscious.

That wasn't the most disturbing part.

The pup was a dalmatian. He was wearing a bright red collar. His pup tag had an orange and yellow flame on it.

"Wait, isn't that Marshall?" I asked, really confused at what I was looking at, "I'm Marshall, so who is this pup?"

Scanning the room, I noticed several other pups sleeping on a grey upholstered couch: A German shepherd, a cockapoo, a mixed breed, a chocolate lab, an English bulldog, a chihuahua, and a Siberian husky. Wait, that's the rest of the Paw Patrol. I desperately tried to get their attention.

"Hey, Chase, Everest, Rocky, anyone, wake up!" I shouted, "Someone, tell me what's going on!"

No matter how loud I screamed, no one woke up. Just as I was about to give up trying to get anyone's attention, a nurse in light blue scrubs walked into the room.

"Hey, nurse, help me! I'm stuck on the ceiling and no one can hear me!"

The nurse didn't even look in my direction. She proceeded to check some vital signs of the dalmatian in the hospital bed.

Was I dead? Is this what the afterlife felt like? If so, I was going to be one miserable pup. No one can hear me, and I can't move from this spot on the ceiling. I guess this is my new life: I'm just a fly on the wall that no one notices, that no one cares about, that no one loves. Everyone just lives their life without me, their clumsy fire pup. I guess it serves them right; they don't need me to fall down my ladder for the 10 millionth time.

A gentle beeping turned my attention away from my inner thoughts.

"Wait, that wasn't making any noise before," I said, noticing a yellow light flashing on the vitals monitor.

Almost instantly after I said that sentence, the beeping increased slightly in volume. I carefully watched the screen from my position on the ceiling.

"Is that monitor beeping louder every time I say something?" I asked aloud, testing my newfound theory. Sure enough, the beeping got louder.

"This must be my way out!" I thought. "If I can get the monitor to beep loud enough, maybe someone will notice and try to help me."

"Zuma, Skye, Rubble, nurse, anyone, if you can hear this, get me out of here!" Marshall yelled.

Soon, the beeping became loud enough to attract the attention of the nurse. She walked over to the monitor and clicked through some menus using the touchscreen.

"Yes, this is my chance!" I exclaimed.

Suddenly, the beeping stopped. The nurse had walked away from the display. Much to my dismay, I was still on the ceiling. Except now, I was muted. I couldn't talk at all. I looked at the display in horror. It read: "Alarms muted for 04:59".

I tried to reach for something, anything, but all I saw when I extended my paw was the corner of a computer screen. I looked down at my body, yet all I could see was brightly colored numbers and squiggly lines going across a display.

No, this couldn't be true, it couldn't really be happening. I WAS the monitor screen?

"AAAHHHH!" my mind screamed internally. Thoughts were racing through my head in an uncontrolled panic, and I began to feel woozy. Suddenly, everything went black.
