Kagome squirmed as the maids dressed her and fixed her hair in Fire Nation style, all the while complementing her and offering her drinks and snacks before breakfast.
Geez how did these nobles not get fat?
When she was finally ready, she was trooped out for breakfast with Zuko.
"Oh it's you. Good Morning." Zuko smiled up at her. "You look..." he chuckled. "Nice..."
"It's...not...funny..." Kagome struggled to sit down in her fancy clothes.
"It's actually hilarious." Zuko kept laughing. "You struggled an awful lot. You had some of my maids in tears."
Kagome pouted. "I didn't mean for that."
Zuko started eating. "You can eat now. They wouldn't let you eat before me."
Kagome began to eat. "Why are you even here?"
"What's that supposed to mean?" Zuko asked.
"You should be helping end the war, not hiding out and letting your father run rampant." Kagome glared at him. "I know you can see it's wrong. Otherwise you would have let them kill me yesterday."
"I'm not that kind of person." Zuko snapped.
"Then I'll ask you again." Kagome made direct eye contact. "Why are you here and not with the Avatar."
Zuko hesitated and stared at her fierce gaze, then relented. "We leave at dawn. But tell no one. And..."
"Yes?" Kagome smiled, the first time he'd seen it. Zuko liked her smile. He wanted to see more of it.
"Thank you, Kagome."
