Ashes and Regret

Chapter 2

We're not who we used to be

We're just two ghosts

Swimming in a glass half empty.

Loving someone requires patience. Understanding. And the ability to forgive. When it get's to the point where you can no longer see yourself or the person you were so in love with. You begin to question if spending you're life that way is worth it.

Lucas read it out loud. Took a deep breath and erased it off the page. He stared around at the walls of his home study.

The only bright spots were the pictures of his kids. The awards were nice but they didn't give the validation you would imagine.

He had yet to take down pictures of him and Brooke off walls in the living room.

He knew at some point it had to happen. It had been two long years since the divorce took place. Once everything was finalized putting their children first was the main issue they agreed on.

They were friends now. Family. Spending a majority of you're life with someone makes creating boundaries almost impossible.

...

Lucas protectively wrapped his arm around his wife. As they got off the plane.

"So you whisk me off for this surprise annivary trip. Just us. The kids are staying with you're parents. Details." Brooke said.

Lucas smiled up at her. "We'll spend summers at our beach house and winters in southern france. There's a reason why i suggested you pack light." He replied.

Brooke screamed with excitement. Pulling him into a passionate kiss.

He kissed her back. Leading the way to the car waiting for them.

...

Brooke gazed at herself in the mirror. Running her fingers over the worn tattered photo she couldn't get rid of. That remained on mirror. She sighed deeply. Grabbing her car keys and purse as she left her bedroom then her home minutes later.

Karen/Keith's Home

The home had gone through a number of renovations through the years. Once you walked through the front door. You were safe. Loved. You knew you would be taken care of.

Penelope. Carson and Brian were already seated at the table.

Conversation and laughter filled the kitchen.

Brooke smiled warmly. As she entered.

...

Paying off his parent's home is an accomplishment he will always cherish. Knowing the house that held so many memories could never be taken away was a huge relief. Even with their careers being stable and thriving. There was a sense of relief. Being able to reassure them of that security was overwhelming.

Lucas's gaze locked on her. As he walked over to the table and sat down across from her.

"The game was one you're best. People are already referring to me as Carson Scott's mom. I'm very proud." Brooke proclaimed.

"You are way too humble. Just like you're mother. Both of you earned the positions you're in now. You should let people celebrate that." Lucas interjected

"The both of you have to come to my cheer competition." Penelope added in.

"All depends on when and how long the event is. I have work and you know you're dad travels." Brooke replied.

"That's why i don't do after school activities. That leaves no room for me to be disappointed when one of you can't show up." Brian announced.

"Yeah. That's why." Carson said. Rolling his eyes.

"We'll see what we can us the details." Lucas said.
