Chpt. 2 APOV:

The moment the plane touches down I jolt awake, surprised as hell that I even managed to fall asleep in the first place. I quickly glance around, everyone else seems to be just waking up as well. I check on Teddy who thankfully slept mostly through the flight, only waking up once to eat. Glancing out the window at the approaching airport, I can't believe I finally made it. When I left West Virginia yesterday I had no idea how I was going to make it to Seattle; all I knew is that I needed to get there quickly. I was so relieved when my dad called and told me I would only need to be drive to Ohio and that I would fly from Indiana to Seattle. I was nervous as hell about meeting Jason Taylor and trusting him, but I trust my dad. If he trusts Jason to keep me safe, then I have to trust him.

The moment the plane stops I unbuckle my seatbelt and begin to gather our things. I fold up the blanket, placing it on the seat next to me before moving to unbuckle Teddy's seat.

"Let me," Taylor is by my side immediately offering his assistance.

"I can manage," I assure him.

"I know, but let me," he insists.

I step back knowing I'm not going to win this argument and watch as he quickly unclips the car seat from the plane seat, careful not to jostle Teddy in the process. The thought of walking through the airport makes me anxious; I can't help but worry that he's going to be here. That he somehow found out that I was flying here and arranged for people to meet us when we get off the plane. Part of me knows this isn't likely; Jason explained everything to me on the way to the airport. Fake names were listed on the plane's manifest, as far as anyone knows Ana and Teddy were never on this flight. Even knowing that though it doesn't make me feel any safer.

"I'm going to put him in a carrier," I decide before we leave the plane.

"You don't need to-"

"It'll just take me a minute," I quickly pull out the front baby carrier from the diaper bag.

"Ana-" Jason hisses when I pull the sling off but when I glare at him he says no more. I easily pull the carrier on, having worn it several times over the last month to keep him close to me. Jason helps me adjust Teddy in the carrier before picking up the now empty car seat and the diaper bag. With his hand on my lower back he leads me off the plane and down a long hall where I'm surprised to see other than a couple of airport workers it's empty.

"Private entrance," Jason explains obviously noticing me looking around. "It'll lead us directly to a private parking lot where we have an SUV waiting.

"Oh," I sigh in relief thankful that we weren't walking through the main part of the airport. Just the thought of being around hundreds of people with Teddy scares the crap out of me. How would I know that he wasn't here? How would I know that he didn't send someone after me again?

I follow Mr. Grey and Sawyer down the long hallway until we eventually come to an exit where an airport employee is waiting for us. Walking out the door I realize just how late it is; the dark parking lot is only lit by a few lights. Instinctively I wrap an arm around Teddy who is snuggled against my chest. Jason's hand remains on my lower back, guiding me to a pair of dark SUVs where our luggage is being loaded into. I can't help but look around the parking lot, still not convinced that he somehow didn't follow us out here.

"You're safe here," Jason tries to assure me.

I nod but unfortunately his words don't convince me that he's not hiding somewhere in the parking lot waiting for us. I'm too busy scanning the parking lot to realize that Teddy's car seat has been secured into one of the waiting SUVs. Every shadow, every dark corner has me worrying that he's followed us here. That somehow he found out that I was on that plane and knew what exit we would be coming out of at the airport.

"Do you need help loading him into the car seat?" Jason asks.

"I've got him," I respond quickly and slide into the car.

"We'll meet you back at Escala Taylor," I hear Sawyer tell Jason as he climbs into the other SUV along with another guy and Mr. Grey.

"I thought we were going to a hotel?" I ask as soon as Jason gets into the car.

"Mr. Grey has offered for you to use one of his condos in the building he lives in," he explains. "It won't be ready for another couple of weeks though, so until then you'll be staying with me and Gail."

"Are you sure? I can stay at a hotel, it's not a problem," I offer. I withdrew all the money in my bank accounts before I left; it won't be easy finding a hotel that will accept cash as a payment without question but I'm sure I can find something.

"Gail and I both work for Mr. Grey and have our own private quarters in his condo," he says. "We have a spare bedroom that is pretty much empty; it's not much but there is no hotel that can stand up to the security that Escala has to offer. It'll be the safest place for you…both."

"I can pay rent to Mr. Grey," I reply.

"Ana…there's no way that Mr. Grey will accept your money," he warns.

"I can't stay there without paying something!"

"You may not yet be aware, but my boss is a very powerful, very successful man," he explains. "The jet that we just flew in on? That's his…as in he owns the jet. He also owns a large boat, a helicopter that he flies himself, a large vacation home in Aspen and four condos throughout the city that he uses for business. From what I understand he has more money than he could spend in a lifetime."

"Still…" I sigh. "I can't stay in one of his condos without paying him."

"I've worked for Mr. Grey for the last two years, I assure you he will never accept money from you."

"Hmmmm," I sit back determined to think of way for this to work out.

"Mr. Grey's mother will be stopping by to see you in the morning-"

"What? Why?"

"She's an emergency room doctor," he explains. "Mr. Grey contacted her when we boarded the jet after seeing…your arm."

"I'm fine, I saw a medic."

"I know you did, but it doesn't hurt to have a second set of eyes double check you."

"I'm fine," I sigh. "Nothing broken; just a bunch of bruises."

"Then it shouldn't take long."

"She can't bill my insurance company," I remind him quickly. "It'll come up where I was seen or at least the city we're in. She can't put my name into their system. He might have flagged hospital records-"

"Ana, calm down," he interrupts. "There will be no record of you being seen by a doctor. It's entirely off the record."

"Are you sure? I mean, how do you know she won't say something to someone?"

"She won't; Doctor Grey is a very trusting woman. You don't need to worry about her."

Easier said than done; I've had to worry far more than I ever expected to over the last month. I look over at Teddy; his blue eyes are wide open as he looks around probably hearing Jason's voice from the front seat. I never thought I would be here; never thought I would be the one raising my nephew. I look at him and can't imagine Kate not watching him grow up. The moment he was born, he became Kate's entire world. For those two months she was happier than I had seen her in over 18 months. I thought the scumbag was finally out of her life and that she would be able to move on. I should have known that happiness wasn't going to last. I should have known something was going to happen. I should have convinced her to come stay with dad instead of getting her own place more than an hour away. But she was so happy to start her new job…

"Ana, we're here," Jason's voice pulls me from my thoughts and I realize we're parked in a parking garage. I dry the tear falling down my cheek and take a deep breath, preparing to for the next journey of a life I never expected to have.

Sawyer is at Teddy's door ready to help carry him upstairs, instead I take Teddy from his seat and put him into the carrier that is still on my chest. I know it's probably not necessary, but until we're safely inside the apartment I don't know that I'll feel relaxed. How do I know he didn't follow us or somehow learn where we would be staying? How do I know he's not hiding in one of the cars and is going to try to snatch Teddy the moment I turn my back? I wish Jason would have given me back my gun, but it's still stored in the locked box somewhere. I have a knife strapped to my ankle and another in the diaper bag…

"Over here is the service entrance, this will take you directly to our quarters in Mr. Grey's apartment," Jason explains and leads us to an elevator at the side of the parking lot. "The garage is secure; it cannot be accessed by non residents. If guests don't have a pass, they can't get into the garage. Mr. Grey's penthouse can only be accessed with a special code which is changed minimally every 30 days. This is one of the most secure residential buildings in all of Seattle. You'll be safe here."

I let out the breath I hadn't realized I was holding as we step into the elevator. Sawyer joins us carrying the couple of bags that I had thrown together before starting this crazy road trip. For the first time in over a month, I begin to consider that I might be safe…at least for now. Jason and Sawyer lead me to the apartment I'll be staying in for who knows how long. I have no idea how long I'll be in Seattle before he'll get wind of where we are and I'll be forced to go somewhere else. My dad and I talked about the very real possibility that I might need to get a fake passport for myself and Teddy and leave the country to get away from him if my dad can't find the evidence the cops need to arrest him for what he did to Kate.

"Ana, this is Gail," Jason introduces me to the woman standing in the kitchen.

"It's nice to meet you," I say.

"It's wonderful to meet you Ana, I'm sorry though it's under these circumstances," she replies.

"Me too."

"What an adorable little boy," she peaks in at Teddy who is looks up the moment he hears a new voice. "I fixed up the spare bedroom with everything you should need."

"Wow," the room I'm lead into surprises me. There's a crib, changing table and full size bed all set up; my eyes fill with tears as I take everything in. The changing table is stocked with diapers, wipes and a basket full of other small items. The crib has blue sports bedding on it and even a small teddy bear in the corner. "This is…you didn't have to do this."

"Nonsense," she shakes her head. "I love shopping for babies; I couldn't very well let him sleep in the car seat."

"We'll try to stay out of your hair," I assure her. "He typically sleeps through the night, so you shouldn't hear him-"

"Don't you worry," Gail interrupts me. "If he wakes up, he wakes up. We won't be bothered by him at all, I promise."

"Gail's right," Jason stands in the doorway next to her. "You don't need to worry about Teddy waking either of us up at night or staying out of our way. You make yourself comfortable here. Sawyer will be with you anytime you need to leave the apartment; he'll keep the both of you safe. You have my word."

"I don't know…how to thank you for doing all of this for us," Jason literally dropped everything to help us. How do you repay that?

"You don't need to thank me," he assures me quickly. "Your father literally saved my ass; this is the least I could do."

"We'll let you get some sleep Ana," Gail says after a few minutes of silence. "I'll let you know when Doctor Grey is here to see you. In the meantime, if you need anything our room is across the hall. You should find everything you need in the drawers for the baby. I picked up a few things for you as well to get you started. I typically go to the market every day for Mr. Grey, so if you need something I can easily pick it up for you."

"Thank you…for everything."

"Good night Ana," Jason says.

"Night," I reply.

I settle Teddy into the beautiful crib that Gail had somehow managed to not only buy but have set up in a matter of a few hours since I know the plan was to go to a hotel when Jason and I were driving to the airport. I pull one of the burner phones from my bag and following the list of numbers, I text dad on the burner phone he should be using today. His response is immediate, asking how both me and Teddy are. I'm tempted to send him a picture of Teddy to ease his worry, but we agreed no pictures just incase. Instead I describe the wonderful room that is set up for us and try to assure him that we're okay.

Sleep doesn't come easily which is nothing new; I can't remember the last time I actually slept through the night in the last month. Initially it was out of worry; having only limited experience helping Kate with Teddy I was worried sick at night. Just as I felt more comfortable with him at night, our lives changed and it's been nightmares of that day that kept me awake at night. The last few days it's been a mixture of the recurring nightmares combined with a new nightmare…one where he manages to grab Teddy.

I'm up long before I hear anyone else in the apartment; when Teddy wakes up I quietly go into the kitchen to prepare a bottle for him. The apartment is completely silent; whether it's because Jason and Gail are still asleep or they're already at work it's not clear. After feeding Teddy I lay him in his crib to play and go into the bathroom to wash up quickly, taking the video baby monitor that Gail also bought with me. I'm dying for a long, hot shower, but instead I settle for what has to be the world's fastest shower. I'm in and out in under five minutes, wrapped in a towel and back next to Teddy's crib before he probably even realized I was gone. I toss on one of the few outfits I have left that are still clean and then dress Teddy.

"Ms. Steele?" Gail's voice surprises me.

"Ana, please," I say as I walk into the living room carrying Teddy.

"Oh wow," she gasps and I immediately turn expecting someone to be standing behind me. "Your hair."

"Oh," I run my hands through the strands. "A wig…"

"You look…different," she says. "Anyway, Doctor Grey is in Mr. Grey's kitchen. If you'll follow me, I'll introduce you."

"Sure," I follow her nervously through a large door at the other end of the apartment that I hadn't noticed before.

"Doctor Grey, this is Anastasia. Ana, Doctor Grey," Gail introduces me to the woman sitting at a breakfast bar in the middle of a beautiful kitchen wearing hospital scrubs.

"Anastasia, how are you dear?" she stands to greet me.

"Ana, please," I take her offered hand. "I'm fine how are you?"

"Better than you I understand," she shakes her head sadly. "And who is this little guy?"

"This is Teddy," I reply.

"Ana, if you'd like I'd be happy to watch Teddy for you while you meet with Doctor Grey," Gail offers.

"I don't know…" I say nervously. Teddy hasn't been out of my sight in the last three days; not since-

"We'll be right in the living room in the apartment; we'll even leave the door open," Gail suggests.

"Um…okay," I reluctantly agree.

"Why don't we talk out here for a few minutes?" Doctor Grey suggests.

"Okay," I answer nervously.

"Are you in any pain?" she asks.

"No…I mean not really," as much as I want to deny it, I answer honestly. "My ribs hurt; my wrist too. The bruises…they only hurt if something rubs against it."

"Did you have any xrays?"

"No, I can't…I can't go to a hospital."

"Taylor said you were checked over by a retired medic?"

"Yes, my dad's friend checked me over after…afterwards. He said my ribs may have been cracked but that even if they were the only thing I could do would be to take it easy. He didn't think my wrist was broken; just badly sprained."

"Can you take off your sunglasses?" she asks.

I take them off, her gasp confirming that they look as bad as assumed they did. I purposely avoided looking in the mirror this morning after my shower, not wanting to see the evidence of what happened that day.

"Let's go see if we can use one of Christian's rooms so I can take a look at your ribs a little better," she quickly stands from the bar stool and I follow behind her not knowing where we're going. I peek my head into the apartment as we walk pass the door, sighing in relief when I see Gail sitting on the floor with Teddy in her lap. I don't want to go further into Mr. Grey's apartment and away from Teddy, but I know Doctor Grey can't examine me in the middle of Christian's living room either.

"Dear, do you mind if we use your bedroom?" Doctor Grey stops in front of a large door and says.

"For?" Mr. Grey's voice is sharp and immediate.

"I'd like to look at Ana's ribs-"

"Oh, of course," he interrupts and I hear him walking close to the door. Suddenly I'm wishing I hadn't left the sunglasses on the breakfast bar.

"We should only be a few minutes," Doctor Grace says and I turn quickly before he can see my eyes.

"You're not a blonde," he says.

"No, it was a wig," I reply without turning around.

"Come on Ana," Doctor Grey urges me to follow her.

"Thank you for letting us-"

"Who the fuck did that?!" he screams.
