Chapter 1: The unknown invader
Autumn of 1784
Streets of Madrid
Chaos reigned in the streets of the capital of the kingdom while creatures belonging only to myths and stories fought against the local militia, the first regiments of the army had just arrived to fight the invader, although to bad fortune, the numbers of the latter were much larger.
"Everything will be all right, everything will be all right" repeated Rafael panting as he ran through the streets of the city, dragons flew overhead attacking civilians and military alike while horsemen on horseback took what women they could while killing the men who tried to defend them.
The young man was agitated, his legs ached with every step he took, but he could not stop, that would be to be killed or captured, he feared what the beasts he saw might do to him and he personally did not want to find out.
His advance did not seem to stop, he did not know when to stop, but definitely the farther away from that creature would be better, he kept demanding more while he hoped to get out alive, but a strong stumble made him fall to the ground.
The contact against the floor was hard, he tried to get up, but his body asked him not to do it for a few seconds, he had to recover.
"God, give me strength please" he murmured as he continued panting hard.
He was like that for a few seconds, seconds that turned into minutes until he heard a voice in the distance, he looked around in search of its origin until he saw two women behind him who were screaming desperately.
Rafael watched helplessly as they ran away making the same effort he was making before falling to the ground, even so, he could not help, in fact, he could not even help himself.
The two women kept running, behind them were five creatures, four of them were green goblins while the other was a three meter tall Ogre who looked very frantic.
"Boy, get up quickly" someone shouted.
Rafael looked for the place where the scream came from, he looked everywhere until he saw several guys, the white uniform and the black three-cornered hat allowed him to identify them as Spanish soldiers.
Rafael tried to get up, but his limbs hurt, he looked at the ground and noticed that blood from his head was gushing on the floor, he could only notice that there were three men who were observing the situation from a narrow alley.
"Let's get the hell out of here and meet with the sergeant" said one of them "The kid is going to slow us down".
"Fuck you Aitor" shouted one of them before approaching Rafael.
"What the fuck are you doing Vicente" shouted the one whose name was Aitor.
"Gonzalo, come and help me" said Vicente as he helped Rafael "I'm not going to let another person die because of that".
Gonzalo thought about it for a few seconds, although he quickly went out to help Rafael, looking furious and grumbling, Aitor joined the other two who were helping the boy.
"Where are your parents?" asked Vicente to the boy.
"First get him off the streets and then ask him anything you want" said Aitor as he looked at the situation in front of them.
"Shit" shouted Rafael as he saw two women running while being chased by green colored men with a twisted build.
The three soldiers saw what happened being Aitor the first to aim his musket, for their part Gonzalo and Vicente continued dragging Rafael to the alley.
"Boy you better not see" said Aitor as he aimed his musket.
The two women fell to the ground less than 50 meters away when the goblins pounced on him, Aitor aimed his musket and fired, the impact hit one of the goblins who died instantly.
"Cover while I reload" said Aitor hiding in the alley next to Rafael.
Gonzalo and Vicente aimed their muskets and fired, the impact hit the other two goblins leaving only one goblin and the Ogre who with his mallet crushed one of the women.
"Ready!" shouted Aitor appearing again and firing at the last goblin.
The targets were 50 meters away, enough for a musket to have no problem hitting.
The second woman tried to get up, but the Ogre stepped on her body making her scream in pain before the impotent look of the three soldiers.
Rafael heard that sound, memories came to his mind making tears begin to flow from his face, he clenched his teeth tightly and his face began to take a reddish tone, Vicente noticed this and approached in front of him.
"Calm down, we are going to get out of this" he said looking at him.
"Easy, we're going to get out of this" he said looking at her face as he pointed to a place at the back of the alley "There's a door there that leads to some stairs, go up to that apartment and wait for us there."
"I can't move" he gasped "I'm in so much pain all over"
"Lean on me then, come on" Vincent said to him as the boy leaned on him to be able to walk
"And your mates?"
"They'll be fine, they're always fine"
Rafael heard two more shots and before entering the stairs he saw how Gonzalo and Aitor ran down the alley, minutes later they were safe on the floor above.
"Bullets don't hurt him much unless you shoot him in the head...and that's hard" said Aitor as he reloaded the musket "Don't worry, the alley is too narrow for him to get through, he'll get stuck"
The group took a breath for a while, the smell of gunpowder smoke and burnt wood was in the air, besides the smoke had already covered much of the city making visibility at several meters high was null.
Vincent tried to see through the balcony and saw the Ogre that was still around the place, he looked with contempt to see how the beast seemed to play with the dying remains of the woman still slightly conscious.
"When the reinforcements arrive we will be safe" said Vincent leaving the window "It seems that the smoke from the muskets and cannons has reduced visibility so much that the dragons are now fighting blind"
"Thank god, now all that's left to do is look for Sergeant Quesada and the rest of the company" said Gonzalo lying down on a wall. "What a shitty day."
Rafael saw the group, Gonzalo was resting, Aitor was checking his muskets and its muzzle constantly and Vicente was constantly watching outside in while reporting progress.
The boy stood in a corner and took out his only weapon to defend himself, a dagger he had taken from his father days before what happened, he saw the three soldiers and remembering some things he learned from veteran friends of his father began to ask.
"And you, what is your unit?"
Aitor looked sideways, but continued cleaning his musket, Gonzalo ignored him, Vicente was the only one who answered him.
"Eighteenth infantry regiment, fourth light infantry company."
"And the other soldiers?"
"We got separated when one of the dragoons attacked, several of the company were killed, but the fire in the streets divided us survivors into two groups."
"If you are going to ask about the others who should be with us I will tell you that they died for wanting to help a group of women and children, there were only three of us left" said Aitor interrupting the two of them
Rafael remained silent for a moment, Vicente for his part looked away and continued looking outside, but seeing what the Ogre was doing made him look away.
"What is it?" asked Aitor
"I saw something I never wanted to see in my life" he said as he vomited in a corner of the room.
"Damn it" said Gonzalo covering his face with his hat.
Aitor for his part stood up and looked out the window, he saw the beast's actions, but he didn't react the same way as Vicente.
"And worse things will come..." he murmured to himself.
Fortunately for everyone, a large number of shots hit the Ogre wounding him, this caught the attention of Aitor who observed how a company of infantry had arrived to the street, next to them was another company, due to the blue uniform and the particular cap he knew it was grenadiers.
Using hand mortars they fired grenades that fell near the Ogre, the creature who did not seem to have great intelligence approached to inspect without knowing that the explosive device would explode in front of him, seconds later he would fall dead making a great roar.
Aitor left the window and saw the three of them "They already killed him Vicente, you can sleep peacefully".
"If I die, get me away from that thing, I don't want you to do that to my corpse" answered Vicente hysterically.
Aitor ignored the complaints while observing the actors of the Ogre's death, he watched the group until he could finally identify who he was looking for.
"Good news, it looks like Quesada is with them too, and the captain is with them as well"
"Thank God" Vicente for his part pulled himself together and took his musket, Gonzalo did the same not without first observing the young man.
The three soldiers looked at each other, Rafael cringed knowing the possible answer of both, he was surprised to see that Aitor was the one who took the floor
"Well boy, will you stay here or will you accompany us?"
Outside the Royal Palace
"There is too much smoke" commented Count Formal as he saw how the battlefield had darkened with the passing of time.
The first hours in this new world had been promising, one legion had already made it across to this new world and the other was on its way, the empire had provided a sizable invasion force, it was not that many troops because of all the logistical work that had to be done, plus they were not even sure what they would find on the other side.
There was some grumbling, but in the end it was agreed to send an expeditionary force strong enough to engage the enemy and set up camp before the second invasion force arrived.
"They have offered considerable resistance, their tactics are interesting and their magic even more so, but it is only a matter of time before their city falls under our power" Fulvio replied confidently "Even if the Wyverns cannot observe what is going on below, it will only be a matter of time before that fog dissipates."
"We should have negotiated first, we don't know where we are and we don't know how powerful this realm is, we entered a war without knowing well what we are up against" objected Formal seriously
"You are still afraid Formal, look around you" replied the General as he walked confidently pointing out how the Sadera flags replaced on the buildings the red and yellow flags that belonged to this nation.
"It's too early to claim victory"
"Damn it Formal, we are commanding respect, we are sending a message, we are shouting at them to surrender and pay tribute or prepare to be defeated, we are telling them they can't fuck with us."
Formal clenched his fists, he would like to beat that asshole but the Emperor's retaliation for attacking an Imperial General could bring trouble to him and his people.
"I understand" he mumbled still grumpy "Let's hope you're right about sending a message."
"Don't hope so, I do" replied General Saderan enthusiastically.
Formal swallowed hard preferred to ignore the subject and focus on the operation like any military campaign, he looked that in front of them there was a large building, it was a gigantic palace built of a very beautiful architecture, definitely someone powerful lived there.
The palace had been under assault for an hour already, although the resistance had been fierce, the enemy's weapons defeated the hordes of demi-humans that had charged against it so the legionnaires were being sent to take over.
To one side of them, a Wyverns rider landed, got off his beast and approached General Saderan.
"Smoke covers much of the streets, though not all of the city, the areas that are not covered there is nothing, but enemy troops are moving between the corridors and alleys."
"The city will not take long to fall, they are hiding and attacking like the filthy rats they are, I thought they would have honor, but it is up to their magic to fight us" Fulvio exclaimed with contempt.
"What orders do we have now my general" asked the Wyvern rider.
"Rest a bit and then take flight again, neutralize any reinforcements that try to enter the city, if you can't fight stay as lookouts against any threats"
"Understood my general" said the Wyvern rider, though he remained at his post for a moment without moving.
"Anything else you have to tell us?"
The rider nodded before continuing "We have managed to identify that by approaching us at close range the enemy can eliminate the rider with their magic, our armor cannot offer us protection, but the Wyvern's scales manage to resist, though the Wyvern can be wounded after several hits"
"Interesting" Fulvio pointed out touching his chin "Still that won't be enough to stop us"
"But there is a weapon that can kill the Wyvern from a considerable distance."
"How?" said everyone in the vicinity, including Formal who was watching a few meters away opened his eyes in surprise.
"Impossible" said Fulvio in surprise "We need to know what this is about...Now!"
"My general" interrupted another legionnaire, "We have news about the palace and the strong resistance."
Fulvio looked at him annoyed due to the interruption, but agreed, both subjects interested him, but he decided to give the floor to the legionnaire who ran exhaustedly to him.
"Speak quickly!"
"The Palace is the royal residence of the kings of this Kingdom."
This again surprised those present, although the following statement made them rethink everything they were doing
"So far what we know is that this empire extends beyond the sea, far beyond the horizon."
Formal observed the situation without saying a word, it seemed that he was right about going for the diplomatic part first, sadly it seems that the Empire has found someone as strong as him.
But to the Count's misfortune, General Saderan's words were totally contrary to what he expected.
"Then capture them now!" he shouted impetuously "Why subdue a small kingdom if we can subdue an empire, so Sadera's glory will be greater!"
The group cheered Fulvio's words, thus beginning the siege of the siege of the royal palace of Madrid.
Royal Palace
The rows of corpses of Saderan soldiers were beginning to pile up over the remains of the demi-human troops that tried to take the palace an hour before, the fierce resistance had shown that what was being guarded was something of great importance.
"Charles III, King of Spain and his entire empire, that's the target" commented to himself Valens who was leading a combined force of mercenaries inside the palace.
Although demi-humans abounded in the city of Formal, the count personally preferred to use mercenary troops arguing that they were better and more efficient, but he knew the reality was wanting to improve his image with demi-humans.
"The enemy's weapons totally break our advance, they have formed barricades down the corridors and their halberdiers wipe out anyone who can manage to break through the barricade" said one of the mercenaries
"Our armor and shields are useless, their magic pierces through them with ease and the orcs are not enough to manage to break through their defense" muttered Valens to himself "Damn"
They had tried to get ogres inside the palace, but most of them were too big to pass through the corridors without getting stuck causing damage to the troops themselves, the smaller ones could, but they couldn't take enough damage to achieve their goal.
In addition to the white-uniformed soldiers, here were blue-uniformed soldiers who were far more skilled, capable and lethal, plus red-uniformed soldiers with halberds who could take down even orcs of equal or greater size than theirs.
They wore no armor whatsoever, but actually seeing them fight showed that they did not need it, especially if the wars of that world were so common these types of magical weapons, a weapon referred to as a musket by the soldiers of this world.
In addition, the smoke from these weapons had already filled several corridors with a dense smoke that together with the amount of corpses and how narrow they were due to the number of troops trying to advance turned the place into hell itself.
Valens rested at the entrance of the palace, one of the few places that had been taken from the palace by the Imperials taking some fresh air before returning to the fight, at that moment he was interrupted by one of the centurions.
"Sir Valens" "General Fulvio has asked for the withdrawal from the place of his men."
"What?" he shouted in confusion "For what reason?"
"He has also ordered the legionnaires to withdraw to the camp at the Gate, then they will be reassigned to another mission."
"He's giving up" he asked confused "What happened to Fulvio?"
For a moment Valens thought Fulvio had come to his senses, perhaps Formal had brought him to his senses, but right now that change was completely useless.
"No Sir Valens, Fulvio wants to personally capture the owner of this palace, he wants to capture the King and bring him before Sadera himself."
Valens laughed internally for a moment before he gave a sigh and nodded at the centurion's words, it was obvious anyway, the glory for Fulvio was there and he would not waste this moment to fill himself with it and increase his position.
Perhaps this moment Fulvio was waiting for, his personal cohort was the only one that had not entered into combat and perhaps this was the reason, find the primary target and engage the while the regular troops finish off the rest.
"They are all yours" said Valens "May Emroy be with you and may the souls of your fallen have a dignified death and eternal rest."
Valens retreated from the palace with his troops while in the distance he saw the Fulvio and his men in front of the palace, the purple armor and capes showed that they were elite of the legions, men who were ready to give everything for a goal.
I hope to continue this fic and I really don't want to take too much time either as it happened to me before, I don't want there to be too much padding "Naruto vibes intensifies".
Additionally, I'm not sure whether to explain certain things as trivia (in these spaces outside the story) or try to explain it within the story (although the characters should already know those things).
Another thing is that I'll try to bring at least one chapter per week, meanwhile I'll be thinking about the possible rewrite of my other fic.
