Chapter One
"I know I've said it all before, but it won't hurt to do it all once more. This is my last hurrah. Once I start, I ain't gonna stop 'til I go too far. Last hurrah, and it's okay. Maybe tomorrow I won't feel this pain."
Bebe Rexha: Last Hurrah
Her car ride was silent as she sat in the back, tinted windows blocking anyone from being able to look into the back of the car. The sky was dim outside, the sun hiding behind gloomy-looking clouds, a sure sign some sort of storm was in the works already. For a moment, she tore her focus from the book in her lap in order to look out at the passing scenery. Everything seemed calm, quiet. Something about it all felt so eerie to her.
"The calm is far from reassuring anymore," she commented quietly. She lifted a hand and gently rolled the pink jewel hooked to her necklace in between her thumb and finger. A second later, she sighed and shook her head. Kagome closed her eyes and rested the back of her head against her seat, blowing a lock of hair out from her face with a huff. "Are we almost there?"
She tried to keep the aggravation out of her voice, but after a lengthy flight and well over three hours in a car, she was starting to feel it. She hadn't been able to move for the past three hours, at least, and she certainly didn't enjoy it.
"I'll even settle for a rest stop so I can get out and walk around for a bit," she added on as an afterthought.
"It won't be much longer now." The response from the driver practically made her roll her eyes.
She could remember asking that same question well over an hour ago, only to get the same response. Still, she held her tongue and took a deep breath. She shook her head.
"You know what," she mumbled to herself, "I've fought demons, I've had my soul removed from my body, there is literally nothing that I can't endure. A dumb car ride is nothing," she muttered. A second later, she opened her eyes and glanced at her bag in the seat beside her. "I just… need a distraction."
With that comment, she shot a hand out and grabbed the strap closest to her and tugged the hefty bag over towards her a bit more. After a bit of rummaging around, she finally managed to find the notebook she used as a diary. She flipped at random to the back, finding a section of entirely blank pages. Without hesitating, she promptly ripped a few sheets out and tossed the notebook back into the opening of her bag.
About twenty-five minutes and an unspeakable amount of tiny, paper stars later, the car finally came to a halt. Kagome blinked and looked up upon realizing the car had come to a halt. She then looked back down at her lap and the space in the back of the car with her.
Several paper stars littered the area, all made from her intent to find something to pass the time. Giving it a quick once-over, she realized that she probably over did it.
"... I guess I went a bit overboard," she commented quietly. She had amassed an impressive collection in the short span of time. She shook her head, suddenly realizing that she could now get out of the car. Lacking the touch of delicateness she'd used to make her collection, Kagome gathered them up as quickly as she could before unceremoniously dumping them all into the never-ending space that was her yellow bag. She accounted for her decision a second later, pursuing her lips before sighing under her breath. For a moment, she felt immeasurable regret for her choice.
"... I'm gonna be finding those for the rest of my life, now," she said. She looked at the rest before shrugging her shoulders. She gathered them up and dumped them into the bag just like she'd done to the others. "Oh well, no going back. Might as well commit to it."
She finished shoveling the little stars into her bag, that lingering trace of regret never quite fading even as she put the last few ones she could see in to mingle with the rest of the things stored inside her bag. Once done, she reached for the handle beside her, only for the door to open before her fingertips could so much as graze it. She froze for a second as a sudden stream of sunlight peered in through the open door before it was mostly blocked off. Kagome tilted her head up, blue eyes landing on a figure she'd resorted to video chatting over the past few years due to her precarious situation of time-hopping. Ignoring her bag for the time being, Kagome all but leaped out of the car and dove into the arms of the man now before her.
"Papa!" she cried, resting her cheek to his chest as she clung to him. The long travel time was suddenly all worth it. She heard him chuckle, and she felt the rumble in his chest as he gently combed his fingers along the back of her head, being mindful not to mess up her braid even more than it already was.
"Look at you, my little raven," Zemo said, one arm curled around her shoulders while his other hand rested against the back of her head, gently cradling her to him. "Video does no justice to reality."
She slowly moved back, and he moved his arms in order to give her the room. His hands fell to rest on her shoulders. She could feel his gaze watching her keenly before brown eyes met her oceanic gaze.
"How was your time with your aunt?"
Kagome smiled. "I had a wonderful time, though I wish I'd been able to come sooner," she said. "I never anticipated that time traveling fiasco to happen."
"No, no you didn't, but it's fine," Zemo responded. "You are alive and well before my eyes, and that is reason enough to see it as such." His gaze strayed to the pink jewel around her neck, sparing it a curious glimpse. "Is that what you were always talking so fervently about?" he asked, and Kagome soon realized what he meant. She reached to pick the jewel up and unlatched it from where it dangled, offering it to him. He took it and rolled it about in his palm, puzzled and perplexed by its appearance. "It's nothing more than a marble."
Kagome hummed in agreement, cupping her hands behind her back. "Indeed," she responded, "but it's a marble that's caused more trouble than it'll ever be worth."
Zemo offered it back to her, not interested in it outside the fact that it'd caused so much trouble for his daughter. She took it, and it seemed to ignite with a pink, pristine glow. The sight of it sparked a memory, and Zemo hummed thoughtfully. The noise caught Kagome's attention, and she looked back up at him once she'd clipped the jewel back onto its latch. "What is it?" she asked.
"It's nothing," he said, but he continued anyway. "You know, when you were born, your mother swore she witnessed a pink mark form on your chest, and it was from that little instance that you got your name," he said, and Kagome nodded. She was familiar with the story, having been told by her mother years ago at her own insistence about her name. "I never quite believed it," Zemo admitted. "I always thought she must've imagined it during exhaustion." He let his gaze drift back to the jewel now hanging from her necklace once more. "Now, not so much."
Kagome nodded. "That light she saw was actually the Shikon no Tama from within me," she said. Zemo nodded once she said those words.
Kagome didn't know her own personal standing on the jewel's connection to her, but she did know it was complicated, to say the absolute least. It was a part of her, yes, but it was a burden all the same. She had gone through hell because of its presence in her life, but it was connected to her all the way down to everything that made her just who she was.
"It may be a burden, but it's also a part of me," she said softly. "No matter how troublesome it can be, I can't let it go." While in her possession, purity prevailed. It could not turn tainted while in her care, and she knew that was a good enough reason for all the potential trouble that could come her way all because of it. "I'm strong. I'm resilient," she said softly. "I can handle this task." If she couldn't, then she knew it would have never fallen into her possession, after all.
"Indeed you are," Zemo responded.
Kagome smiled at his comment, knowing well that he meant those words with every fiber of his being.
"Now, my raven, shall we go?" he asked, and she nodded.
"Yup!" she exclaimed and went to pull her bag from the backseat of the car. Once she had retrieved it, she followed after her father to the other car present. This time she got in the passenger's seat, letting her bag take up the spot behind her seat.
She wasn't certain where they were going as she absentmindedly talked about whatever the topic would shift to while they traveled down roads. Occasional cars would pass by, but she paid them little attention, if any at all. She's refrained from asking where they were, figuring she'd be told if it held any importance.
"Brace yourself."
The comment took her by surprise, but she reacted without an ounce of hesitation. At her father's quick, short statement, Kagome automatically let a pink barrier form around both of them. The impact came seconds later, the sound of their car colliding with another causing a loud echo.
At first, she was stunned. She was confused and taken by surprise at the sudden incident. They were both fine and well due to her barrier, but the front end of the car wasn't in as great condition. She blinked a few times before looking at her father. "What just happened?"
"Don't worry," he said, looking at her. His stare was keen as he looked her over before he finally let his gaze settle back on her face. "You're not hurt, are you?"
Kagome shook her head. "No, no," she assured. "I had enough time to put up a barrier. I'm okay, Papa." She looked back out in front of her, taking in the sight of the damaged front end of their car. "Can't say the same for the cars, though…" she muttered. It wasn't too bad, thankfully, as they hadn't been going fast at all, but it was still a little bit smashed up. The other car was in slightly better condition, a few dents here and there.
At least it'd been a parked car, and no one had been inside it. She reached to undo her seatbelt, only for her father to stop her. He caught her hand with his own, shaking his head.
"No, you stay," he said. "I'll handle this, you just wait here."
"Are you sure?" Kagome frowned and looked at him, hand still ready to undo the seatbelt across her body. "I-"
"Yes," he said, nodding. "I'll take care of this. There's no need for you to get involved. Not in this."
She relented at his reassurance, letting her hand fall back against her lap. "Okay," she said. "I'll wait here."
Zemo smiled and patted the top of her head, smoothing down her slightly-mussed hair. "I'll be right back, my dear raven."
"Okay," she responded and turned her focus to the book in her lap, opening it to the page she'd last left off on as Zemo got out of the car. He let the door close behind him, and he went up to the house they were stopped in front of.

She didn't count the minutes that passed as she waited, but she'd gotten a few more chapters into her book before her father finally reappeared. She paused and marked the page she was on, flipping the book closed as she glanced at her father. He must've felt her gaze on him, because he looked at her not even a second later.
"Did everything work out?" she asked, and he nodded. He offered her a small smile, one that she couldn't help but return.
"Yes, of course," he said.
"Great!" she exclaimed. She paused and looked back at the damaged front end of their car, and a small frown peppered her expression. "What are we gonna do about the car, though?"
"Don't worry your pretty little head, my dear raven," Zemo said softly. "I've got it all handled."
She nodded, gaze straying back to the house they were in front of. "... and him?" she asked, clearly referring to the man inside the building.
"You've got no reason to fret," Zemo assured, his tone gentle. "I've taken care of all I needed to here. We'll be on our way soon enough."
She nodded, trusting his words.
C.R: Done and ready!
Kagome is aware of the current situation. Not entirely, but she is somewhat aware of what's happening around her and what Zemo is doing. It won't be long before she's made aware of the whole thing, and things will shift then.
She knows HYDRA = bad, and she has little to no sympathy for them.
Anyway that's it for now! Thank you all for reading, and I hope you enjoyed! Hopefully I caught all the errors before posting, but if not sorry.
Please remember to Reveiew&Favorite&Follow, thank you!
Bye for now~
