Kate had begun to think about all the different scenarios that could play out this weekend. It made her anxious so she decided to get to the source of the problem. Kate went downstairs to meet Castle for dinner.
"Hey, what would you want to eat?" He asked, coming from the living room.
"It's been a pretty long week at work so I would rather stay in tonight if you don't mind." She admitted.
"No of course, that's fine! Let me see what we still have here." As he went through the cupboards and looked for something decent to eat Kate realized something. He didn't actually plan to take her out to the Hamptons as it was more of a last minute thing.
"Ah, I found something edible! It's a frozen pizza, is that fine by you?"
"Yeah, sure!" She said as he placed it in the oven and she was delighted to hear that it was something casual.
"As we're waiting, should I entertain?" Castle asked.
"Depends on what you mean by the entertainment." She looked at him filled with hope.
"Uhm, I dunno, we could play Scrabble?" He suggested this game because of course, his profession was still being a writer. He never thought that he could lose the game. Let her win on purpose? Maybe.
"Sure!" Kate said, as she liked the route that this weekend was taking.
He grabbed the game out of the cupboard and opened up the box. They started playing and somehow they had an equal amount of points when the timer of the oven beeped.
"Our pizza's ready!" Kate said happily. As she took the pizza out of the oven Castle went to get them some drinks.
"Care from some wine? I have an amazing Châteauneuf du Pape right here." He held up the bottle showing it to her.
"Sounds good!"
They sat down on the couch with their pizza and glasses of wine.
"To coming with me to the Hamptons." He said and they clung their glasses together.
"Yes, to coming here. Castle, I really liked it that you didn't push me, and I indeed wanted to come with you. I just wasn't sure how it would change things." She carefully admitted.
"I know. But if you don't want, it shouldn't change anything. Let's just enjoy our time spent here and we'll see."
"Yes, I like that Castle." They finished their pizza and had already emptied 3/4th of the bottle of wine, which made the Scrabble game even more fun.
"Hah! Double word count!" Beckett couldn't contain her excitement and Castle sure didn't think that she might win their little game.
"Wait really?" Castle didn't get it.
"Yeah, write that down!" She laughed and put a strand of hair behind her ear.
Castle admired these little things about her. The gestures, the expressions, her smile.. He had seen more of the smile tonight than during all their cases combined.
"You really don't like it that I'm beating you at Scrabble do you? After all you're the writer." Kate said with a flirty undertone.
"You haven't won yet, detective." He said with a smug look on his face.
After they had finished their game - and Kate won - he hated to admit it, but if one specific woman had to beat him at this, it should be Beckett.
"Want to watch a movie?" Kate asked and of course he wanted to sit on the couch together and bond over a movie. He didn't care too much about the movie itself, but he cared about getting to know her and stealing sneaky glances during the movie.
"Yeah, let me see what we've got here. Uhm, The Proposal, Titanic, oh gosh.."
"What, Castle?"
"We've only got these type of romcoms."
She smiled "Fine just put on The Proposal or something. It doesn't matter, I'll watch any movie with..-"
"With me by your side? Awh Kate you're too sweet!" She sensed his sarcasm through his words.
"Just put it on."
They had been watching the movie for about 45 minutes now, but Castle had been more interested in her than the movie. He kept glancing at her. Kate noticed him, but for once she did not mind. She even looked back at him, twirling a strand of her hair as her cheeks reddened. He looked back at the TV screen as if he hadn't seen anything. It were the looks their shared, even if they were only a second long.
Kate grabbed her glass from the table in front of them and drank the last bit of wine.
"Castle?" She looked up at him and ignored the movie that was still playing. "Why exactly did you ask me to come with you in the first place?" She didn't exactly mean to pry, but she wanted his motive.
"I thought that it would have been a nice weekend getaway between colleagues." He tried to sound like he meant it, but was failing just a little. Kate read him right.
"Really huh?" She had the most genuine smile on her face. "Castle, at the precinct I do notice your glances.."
"Well you're an extraordinary woman, Kate." Without any of them noticing, they had moved a few inches closer to each other during their conversation.
"And what about your new book?" Kate asked.
"I can finish that book another time, this is more important." He carefully placed his hand on top of hers.
A slightly awkward moment made her say something out of the blue to ignore the situation like she used to do more frequently. "I'm getting tired, good night Castle." She had the dorkiest smile on her face.
"Goodnight, Kate." He noticed some doubt in her voice and after she had left for her room and he wanted to end the night right. He walked up to her room with the excuse to ask at what time she liked getting up in the morning. He knocked on her door and luckily for him, she opened it immediately.
"Hey Kate uhm, what time would you like to get up?"
"Depends, maybe 9ish?"
"Sure, great. And Kate-" He lightly touched her hand. "You don't have to be afraid.. not of us." She looked him in the eyes and felt what she needed confirmation of. Very slowly, everything she already knew became more real, she was falling for him. Kate grabbed his hand ever so slowly and said: "I know. Thanks Castle."
"Goodnight Kate."
"Night."
As Kate woke up she already smelled the pancakes. Very domestic, as Ryan and Esposito would say. She was trying not to think about their opinions about the weekend though.
"Hey Castle." Kate said as she walked down the stairs. She looked put together as she had a summer dress on and her hair in a low bun.
"Morning, Kate. Did you sleep well?" He said with a smug grin on his face. He loved having her at his place and spoiling her with his gestures.
"Yes, thank you. How'd you sleep? Those pancakes smell delicious."
"Very well, knowing that you were here thank you. I already made you a cup of coffee. Here you go."
"Thanks Castle." Kate tried to hide her amusement from his comment.
After breakfast they discussed their plans for the day.
"I don't know, what would you prefer?" He asked.
"Lunch into town sounds great to me. You can show me those amazing chocolate shakes you talked about." Kate said, remembering his comment about Alexis loving the chocolate shakes from the local diner.
"I would love to."
Luckily they were able to walk into town, which made the experience even more enjoyable. "So, Castle, don't you really have to write sometime this weekend? I mean, I don't mind and I respect your job. I would not want to take away your time."
"Don't you worry, I'll be able to finish this book by the deadline even if I don't write this weekend. And maybe I won't write, but I will be doing my character research here." He put his hand gently on her back as he cracked his joke.
"Oh of course, your main character has got so many layers, bet you want to discover them all. But trust me, as for the character research, you'll be able to do enough of that." Kate had the most genuine smile on her face. She really wanted to open up to him, about everything. It wasn't going to be all at once this weekend, but layer by layer she was slowly opening up.
"Have you actually been to the Hamptons ever?" He asked her, loving her openness and honesty.
"Apparently as a kid I spent a weekend here, but I don't remember it." It made Kate think about her parents and how everything had changed.
"I'm sorry Kate."
"It's alright Castle."
They silently walked further, both feeling comfortable in this silence as they were admiring their surroundings.
"Ah, we've arrived. Let me introduce you to All's. They have the best burgers and shakes in town." He opened the door for her and let her pick a table.
"What are you going to get?" He asked her.
"Definitely the chocolate shake, a burger and fries."
"Alright then, I'll get the same thing." He went to order at the counter.
After a little while the waiter brought their food as well as one very large chocolate shake with two straws instead of two mediums.
"This wasn't my doing." Castle said with a grin.
"Oh of course, you know that I don't believe you, right?"
"But Kate, you're the lucky one, you get to share a shake with me!"
"I'm definitely lucky." He didn't think she would go with it.
Castle saw his shot and he took it. "So Kate, remember when we first met?"
"Oh yeah I couldn't stand you." She laughed and took a bite from her burger.
"Okay, I don't believe that for a second but that's off topic.. You read my books, what was the first one you ever read?" He asked curiously.
"In a Hail of Bullets."
"Really? You serious?" He couldn't believe it. The first book she ever read was his very first novel that he wrote while still in college.
"Yeah I'm definitely serious."
"How'd you get into the books?"
"Curiosity killed the cat Castle. Story for another time."
AN: So, the second chapter is up! I hope that you enjoyed reading it. Of course there will be some inconsistencies with the show, but that makes it even more fun to me. Hope you tune in for chapter 3, as these two lovebirds - they don't know it just yet - experience their last days in the Hamptons! By the way, this chapter ends on a Saturday at noon, assuming that Kate has to be back in the office by Monday.
