Steve x Kagome: Safe

The night sky was expansive as she looked up at it. It was clear and soothingly pretty, a multitude of stars filling and lighting up the midnight-tinted sky. It was quiet, but for some reason, things felt… off to her. She looked around, and her eyes eventually fell to land on the familiar silhouette of that ancient wooden well.

It was just ahead of her, shrouded in the shadows that were offered by the night sky.

Why was she here?

She looked down at her hands, but she wasn't sure if they were even her own anymore. Long white sleeves billowed around her wrists, reminding her of the traditional garb Miko's wore- the same attire that she refused to wear unless she had no other options. She felt her expression contort in unease and confusion.

She closed her eyes, momentarily blinding herself to the physical form of things around her. A second later, her eyes snapped back open when she felt an aura suddenly appear behind her. She whirled around just long enough to spot malevolent crimson eyes looming over her. The next second, she felt a harsh pain rip through her chest.

The last thing she saw were those ominous crimson eyes glowering down at her. The world around her went black.

She woke up instantly, sweat dampening her brow as her chest rose and fell in rapid movements. Panic surged through her as she rapidly glanced through her room, looking for anything and everything that might assure her that she wasn't still in her dream.

She clawed at her night shirt with blunt, manicured nails, searching for any sort of wound or sign of blood, only to find nothing. That discovery did nothing to soothe her racing heart or ease her panicked mind.

Those eyes…

They felt so familiar, but not at the same time. She knew it wasn't a misplaced memory about Naraku getting warped into a jarring nightmare for her. She knew that it wasn't Naraku's gaze she felt in her dream. While they had been cold, it was entirely different than Naraku's had ever been.

But if not him then who…?

She sat up in bed, the covers pooling in her lap as she let the silence surrounding her greet her pounding heart. It came with peace, with an uncanny sort of calm that she couldn't say for sure she liked.

"Miss Barton, you seem to be displaying severe signs of distress," FRIDAY's voice came from all around her, and she sighed softly as she drew her knees up to her chest. "Would you like me to get someone for you?"

She shook her head and lifted a hand, brushing back her mass of raven hair that'd gotten everywhere as she tossed and turned in her sleep. She felt a searing pain shoot through her chest, and a sharp gasp tore free from her throat. For a moment, she cut her eyes to the pink jewel resting innocently on her bedside table. The next second, she narrowed her eyes and shoved a hand out in apparent anger, forcing a sheer, pink barrier up around it to isolate its obnoxious aura. She sincerely doubted it had anything to do with her dream, but still.

She didn't want to feel its aura.

"Miss Barton, I strongly advise you allow someone to check on you," FRIDAY's voice came a second time. "Shall I get Captain Rogers?"

Kagome shook her head again, fervently denying the idea. "No…! I- It's late. Let people sleep."

"It is as per Mr. Stark's orders that someone is to be alerted whenever you begin to exhibit levels of distress such as these. As it is, Captain Rogers is still awake, by the looks of it."

Kagome grabbed her pillow and shoved her face directly in the middle of it so she could muffle her scream. She knew that Tony's concern came from a good place, but she honestly hated it. She didn't want people to know when she had a bad day or anything of the sort. She'd sooner just handle it on her own and bury it down the next day. There was no reason for people to get involved.

Since she couldn't just hand the Shikon no Tama off to someone else, this was what he'd come up with. Her team knew the growing effects it had on her, and she knew their worries were rooted in concern for her wellbeing. Its attacks on her were getting harder to endure. They were starting to hurt worse, and the pain left behind was strong enough to stick around for days at a time.

She felt a familiar aura stop outside her door, and her expression faltered as she pulled the pillow away from her face. A second later, she glanced up at her ceiling as if she might find any sort of face for FRIDAY, despite knowing she wouldn't. "You alerted him as soon as I woke up, didn't you?" she asked dryly.

"My apologies, Miss Barton," FRIDAY responded. "I disregarded your wishes only because my orders demanded it. I meant no harm."

Kagome sighed and set her pillow out of the way, eyes going to her door when a knock echoed out from the outside of her room. "No, no," she said as she shook her head. "I'm not upset with you or anything," Kagome continued as she got out of bed to head to her door. "I'm just… frustrated with this entire thing," she admitted. She was frustrated with the jewel, with the worry-fueled rules Tony had established for her, with the fact that, no matter the moment, she could tell that her teammates were concerned for her. If there was one thing she hated, it was feeling like a burden, and she definitely was starting to feel like one massive burden the longer this continued.

She grabbed at her doorknob and pulled her door open the moment she got to it. Her gaze traveled slowly, and she tentatively met his worried stare. "Funny running into you here," she commented after a moment or two of trying to think of something reassuring to say to him. She was keen to note how his smile was strained, and she all but turned away from him. "I'm fine, if you're wondering. Just a bad dream."

She walked back into her room, leaving her door open so he could follow her in if he wanted. She felt his aura coming closer. It was quiet, and she heard the soft click of her door closing as she pulled her blankets back to fix them. A second later, she sat back in her bed and buried her face in her hands. Even if she did try to go back to sleep, she knew that she wouldn't have much luck.

"Must've been a pretty bad dream if it left you like this," Steve said as he came closer. Kagome lifted her head for a moment before she shrugged and looked away. "You wanna talk about it?" he offered. She felt the mattress dip some as a different source of weight settled down on it. He sat next to her on the edge of her bed, feet still on the floor as he watched her with that worried light in his eyes.

She could feel it in his gaze just as she could feel it in his aura.

Rapid flashes of her dream pounded through her head, and she felt panic slide up her spine. She nearly let out a sob, immediately pressing a hand over her mouth to muffle it. A second later, she shook her head slowly.

"No, not really," she said finally, removing her hand from her mouth as the tears faded away.

Steve nodded, relenting for the time being when he was actually able to see how she was reacting. She didn't let this side of her show often, but when it was on display, it was only because she couldn't keep it buried down any longer.

He sat with her, and to her relief, it felt like her fears and panic were going away with him in her presence. He was a comfort to have around. He'd often lend her a listening ear when she needed one. The plenty of times he'd assured her of that during her time of knowing him proved that enough to her.

She wasn't sure how long it'd been since he'd just come and sat down beside her, but by now she'd calmed down. The faint glimmers of her dream lurked in her mind, but she was able to push them out of thought mostly.

She knew that the moment he left, and she was alone with her thoughts, they'd return full force and that it'd be a night were sleep evaded her. An idea flittered through her head, but the thought of asking him nearly made her cheeks burn scarlet. Before he could notice the shifting hues on her face, she looked away from him and laid back down, resting her head on her pillow once more.

"Thanks," she said softly. "I-I should try and get some sleep."

Steve nodded and he stood up from where he sat on her bed. Instantly she missed the added weight. "Right," he said. "If you need anything, don't hesitate to come to me, okay?"

She nodded slowly, feeling as his aura got further and further away from her. Before he could leave her room, however, she sat up and looked at him.

"Wait!"

At her hushed outburst, Steve came to halt, his hand on her doorknob. He glanced back at her, patiently waiting for her to say what she wanted.

"Will you… will you lay with me for a while?" she asked. Her voice sounded timid, even to herself, so she knew it must've sounded odd to him. She looked away when his brows rose at her request, and she fisted her hands in her blankets. "J-just until I get to sleep," she pleaded softly. Maybe if she had him beside her, the comfort he'd given her during her time awake might extend to her dreams.

Silence came from him, and she realized how her request might've sounded. She bit her lip, inwardly cursing at herself for her lack of thinking. She hadn't put thought behind her words, merely wanting to say them before he left and it was too late.

"A-Actually, never-!"

"Sure," he said, cutting her off before she could start to ramble out an apology. She fell silent, briefly stunned, before a small smile appeared on her face.

"... thank you," Kagome said softly. She scooted over some so he had enough room to join her, laying her head back down on her pillow with a soft sigh. She felt the blankets shift some as that familiar weight settled down beside her.

When he settled underneath the covers, she instantly moved a bit closer, letting her head rest on his chest as she listened to his heartbeat. It sounded much calmer than her own, that much she knew. As she laid there, she felt him wrap an arm around her shoulders, pulling her into a gentle hug that surrounded her in his scent and aura. A calm sigh fell from her lips as she closed her eyes.

The combination of his aura, heartbeat, and the gentle way he was tracing his fingers along her shoulders eventually lulled her back to sleep. Even after she'd fallen back into a deep sleep, he didn't stop or try to move away. A part of him was worried she might wake up again if he did, so he opted to stay there just to be sure.

As she slept against him, he heard her voice as she murmured sleepily in her sleep. He wasn't sure what she was saying at first, but after listening more carefully, he was able to make out a broken string of syllables.

"Magat...su...hi…"

C.R: So, another obligatory warning that this will have minor spoilers for Marvelous. [Nothing major, however]. If you aren't interested in that, I'd recommend using Marvelous to get your opinions on the potential pairing expressed, or just PM me your feedback for it. That definitely allows me to engage more with your opinions.

This one can read as romantic or platonic in my opinion, and that's what I was going for.

Timeline is a bit unclear, but this takes place between AOU and Civil War for reference.

Anyway, that's it for now! Thank you all for reading, and I hope you all enjoyed. Hopefully I caught all the errors before posting, but if not sorry.

Please remember to Review&Favorite&Follow, thank you!

Bye for now~
