Chapter 1
Chicago, Illinois 1982 (Present day)
El was sitting in a bar on the southside of Chicago. She preferred being on this side of the city, it was more dangerous, more exciting. El Hopper enjoyed few things in her immortal existence. She referred to her situation as just that, a situation; or an existence. She would never call it a life, because well..she wasn't living.
Where most found danger or fear, El found comfort- for she was the danger, and she put fear into those around her. She knew she was a monster, she made her peace with that many years ago. She took pleasure in very few things; One- her few friends she kept, some of them human, some of the other vampires she met through her 60 years of immortality; Two- traveling, she found nothing more exhilarating than traveling across the country. Unfortunately, she could not travel outside the country, as she did not have a passport.
Looking across the sea of faces she noticed nobody in particular- and very few noticed her. Love was a concept she once cherished, yearned for. It was a struggle in the first few years, trying to understand why she was turned. El learned quickly that it was no accident, for no vampire can turn another without purposely doing so. To turn another, it required they leave some blood in the veins, to not kill their victim: This was extremely difficult. El never knew any romantic partners, she never found the right one for her- which was unusual even by today's standards, let alone 60 years ago.
Her biological father had died in the war, and her mother did not have the means after that to organize a suitable match. Getting up from her stool at the bar, she left some money to pay for the scotch and exited the bar.
Beginning to slowly walk back to her temporary apartment where she has been staying for the past four months, it didn't take long for her to be catcalled by a group of men behind her.
The three men were quickly approaching, she began walking slightly faster not wanting any trouble. She despised living off human blood, killing..It was wrong, so she lived off animals or blood bags when she could..But there are rare occasions where the thirst is too strong..
"Hey, where are you going darling" walking across the street into a nearby alley, deciding she would take a faster route home, "we're not done here yet! Slow down girl, we'll be gentle!" After that last comment, she heard laughter rang out among the other men.
Turning into the alley, she stopped dead in her tracks when she saw two men waiting on the other side of the alley. Knowing she could not control herself if provoked in such a tight space, "Stop, I don't want to hurt anyone!" her screams were echoed out by the walls of the alley.
With her echoes of warning, the men returned it with echoes of laughter. She saw blind dangerous filthy lust in their eyes, she smelled the alcohol on their breath, her vampiric powers amplifying all of her senses. This was not the first time she was subject to a situation like this, and every time she left corpses and with a little less of her humanity. As the men drew closer, she closed her eyes, "One last fucking warning to stay back or I swear to god you'll regret this night."
The men were only three steps away now, all five of them enclosing on her from either side- she was trapped, like being in a lion's cage- except she was the lion and they were the prey. The second one of them reached out to pin her against the wall, she grabbed their hand and twisted with ferocious strength- completely ripping the hand from its owner's wrist.
The other men stopped, mouths agape, with surprise and fear. The smell of the blood flowing out of the now mutilated arm sent El into a dangerous rage. With the speed of light, she went to the next man, latching her teeth to his neck, severing his carotid artery, blood gushing into her mouth. Stopping for just a second to taste the delicious red substance, she quickly went to the next man as the remaining three were wising up and running. In a matter of seconds, she snapped the neck of one, ripped out the heart of another, and finally stopped right before the final would-be rapist.
Having him pinned against the wall, the man began to whimper and cry in fear, "P-please don't hur-rt me, I beg you please!" the man cried, his eyes squeezed shut in fear, urine leaking down his leg.
Feeling anger enveloping her, he asks for forgiveness now..after the vile thoughts of tainting her body..he did not deserve to live. "Shhh, 'We're not done here yet' remember...I'll be gentleā¦" she whispered, giving an evil smirk- mocking his earlier taunts when he believed he had the power..how wrong he was.
After finishing with her meal, she felt terrible, but she knew deep down if it wasn't her; it would have been another girl, one who couldn't defend herself. Walking out of the alley after sparing a glance down each side, she continued down to her temporary apartment. As she arrived at the cobble and brick tall set of stairs leading up to her townhouse-style apartment, she stopped and smiled at the small black cat which frequents her front step.
Reaching down and giving it a quick pet on the head before she unlocked the front door and walked up the stairs to her apartment. Her hypersensitive hearing tweaking to all the sounds in the building: The creaks and screeches of bed springs from apartment 2462- which are accompanied by moans and grunts of lust; the sounds of television sets on in multiple apartments; sowers running with the water droplets splashing against the skin of whoever lived in apartment 2134, and finally the sound of her own landline ringing. Cursing to herself she quickly walked up to her front door, taking out her key and unlocking it.
Walking into the room, briskly shutting the door and walking over to the phone; with its coiled-up wire which is affixed to her landline plug-in. Picking up the device and putting it to her ear, "Hello, who is it?"
Silence is on the other end, hearing the slight buzz sound of the air around the microphone before, "El, it's Hopper..Max has been in an accident.."
