Saturday 3rd of July, The Carsons' cottage, Downton Abbey
The news that had crossed its way to Downton, didn't change the daily routine of the family and their servants. Of course, there was some sort of anticipation in the air as can be guessed. It was the talk of the dinners and tea parties all around the country, and to be honest, the whole world. Lady Grantham had received a letter from her mother in America, saying that even there it was a big topic. The former butler of Downton Abbey, with his hair muffled from the work he had done in the garden for the morning, was also excited for the news. His wife, in the contrary, didn't think much of it. As they all knew, Mrs. Hughes was never a woman to care about the royals, not in a way that her husband did anyhow.
Elsie stepped out to the garden, carrying a tray with two glasses of lemonade and Mrs. Patmore's famous apple pie. She glanced at her husband, on his vegetable patch, and her lips curled to a smile. She did love her half days, when she could take her time relaxing and spending time with her husband. Sometimes he would even take her out for lunch or dinner, but usually they just enjoyed a cup of tea by the fire, and now that it was summer, a glass of fresh lemonade in their garden.
"Won't you take a break and come sit with me for a second?", Elsie called out to her husband, who nodded happily and made his way to her.
Elsie made it to hand him a glass of lemonade and they sat down on the bench behind their cottage.
"What have you been up to while I've been tending to the garden?", he asked and took a sip of the lemonade.
"Well, I thought I could use my time to tidy up the cottage a bit. And I finished the book I was reading.", she told happily.
"You do know I can do that, don't you?"
"I do, but I don't mind. Not really."
Charles just hummed in respond. He placed his hand to gently rest it on her thigh. She was wearing a light blue day dress, which he had gotten her for her birthday last year. It was her favourite.
"Have the news affected the house?", Charles questioned her.
"Not much. Although Daisy keeps nagging about it now being true. It's going to drive Mrs. Patmore mad.", Elsie chuckled at the thought.
He was about to say something about the young girl's behaviour, but her hand on his silenced him in time.
"Don't even start."
She stood up to cut them pieces of the pie. His was twice as big as hers. She never had such a sweet tooth as her husband.
"I do feel kind of bad for her. The Princess I mean."
"What makes you say that?", Charles asked kindly.
"Well, she had lived a completely different life, probably with her own family and friends, and now everything will change completely when she joins the Royal household.", Elsie explains, sighing as she does so.
"She might as well be someone from the upper-class, Elsie. And I don't think anyone wouldn't want to join the Royal family."
"Not everyone is like you, Charlie. I doubt not even half of the people who live in England would expect to find themselves meddling with the Royal family.", she explained, growing a bit frustrated with him.
"Well, as we've seen through the years, everything is possible."
"Finally, you say something that I can agree in."
They both went silent for a while, thinking about the years that have come and gone. After a short while of silence and quiet, Charles asked;
"Did Mr. Barrow sort out the wine delivery yesterday?"
"He did and I had enough time to run my errands too.", Elsie smiled.
"I could have come with you if I had known before."
"I don't think Mr. Barrow would have appreciated it very much, Charlie."
"Fair enough.", he agreed and ate a forkful of the pie.
"Although I would have loved that very much, don't get me wrong.", Elsie told him, sipping her lemonade.
"I know darling. I know."
He smiled at her, but as she didn't meet him with a smile of her own, as she usually did, he decided to ask her;
"I something wrong?"
"I don't think so, why?", she answered after hesitating a bit.
"Nothing in particular, I'm just wondering if my gorgeous wife is feeling happy on this fine summer day?", he said as he raised his eyebrows.
"You flatter me.", Elsie laughed, a laugh that always made his heart flutter when he heard it."I am very much happy, my dear."
"Well, aren't I glad to hear that, my very own princess…"
Elsie had to shake her head at his words and before she could say anything else, he was already leaning to give her a kiss on the lips.
Sunday 4th of July, Downton village church
The Sunday service had just ended, and the staff, as well as the family, were standing outside the church, chatting away with the villagers and each other.
Mr. and Mrs. Carson (as they liked to call her outside of the house) were talking with Lord and Lady Merton, as they often did.
"I think the news from the Royal household are quite a talk downstairs too, Mrs. Carson?", asked Isobel Merton.
"You can say that milady. They talk of nothing else these days anymore."
"I do wonder if they ever do find the Princess.", Lord Merton said.
"I very much hope so, Lord Merton. Although it will be quite a change from the way she must be living now.", Elsie nodded her agreement.
"Well, that can be expected. But a human can be very adaptable, if they want to.", Charles joined the conversation.
"Quiet right Carson.", Isobel said heartily.
"I had to talk Isobel around to report herself to the police, as the order goes. I wonder how they are going to process? They will have a lot of work, the police.", none of them didn't seem to mind about the use of her first name.
Lady Merton sighed at that, and the housekeeper could agree with her. It was not an ideal way to deal with things.
"What about you, Mrs. Carson? Have you gotten around to see the police yet?", teased the other lady.
"I haven't. I don't think it will do any good really, milady. But I shall have to see about it.", Elsie smiled slightly.
"Who knows if it's either one of you two!"
That was a joke from Lord Merton that seemed to make all of them laugh.
Their laughter stopped in time for them to realize Lady Mary approach them.
"Lady Mary.", Charles made it to lift his hat to her and gave her a polite nod of his head.
"Carson it's so lovely to see you again."
"That feeling is quite mutual, milady."
Elsie turned her head away from the lady, just to roll her eyes. She never understood his care for that uppity minx.
"I hope you have been well?", Charles asked.
"I have, thank you."
"We shall leave now. I wish you a good day, Carson, Mrs. Carson.", Isobel said as she and her husband walked away to their car.
"Milady, milord.", Elsie bowed her head.
"Mrs. Carson told me Lady Grantham received a letter from Mrs. Levinson the other day. I hope everything is well at America?", Charles turned to Lady Mary.
Mary gave a small smile at the smile that swirled the housekeeper's lips at the use of her name.
"Mrs. Levinson seems to be as well as ever.", Mary told with a small nod.
"I expect the news are quite big there too, milady?"
"They are, Mrs. Hugh-that is Mrs. Carson. I do beg your pardon. It seems that people, even under the correct age, are telling that they are the princess in question."
"Who wouldn't want to be, milady?", said Mr. Carson, in his best butler voice.
"Even I wouldn't want to be a royal, Carson. Too much responsibility.", Mary told."We hardly manage Downton as it is."
That seemed to quieten everyone. They knew things were not as they had been years before. And that was the crushing truth. Elsie placed a reassuring hand on her husband back, where Lady Mary couldn't see it. She was right, being a royal brought a great responsibility.
