*Romeo P.O.V*
I watched on as patiently as I could, as Wendy seemed to take her time deciding what her answer would be. I didn't want to rush her for a response but at the same time, it felt like every second was dragging on endlessly. I knew in my head whether she said yes or no at the end of the day, it wasn't the end of the world but my heart was still being a traitorous fool and kept making it seem like this was the biggest most important thing I had ever done in all my fourteen years of life.
"I'd love too." She beamed that amazing grin of hers at me.
Her words causing all my panic to cease, and for my lungs to let out the breath I hadn't realized I had been holding in. She wanted to go with me! I could have jumped up and down in ecstasy. Three simple words, yet they brought the biggest, most joyous grin to my face.
"Awesome." I smiled, finally feeling all of the tension leave my body. Wendy had agreed, we would get to spend time together alone, maybe even days. This plan was going better than I could ever have hoped. "Do you have any idea of what kind of job you would like to go on?
"ummm maybe..."
But before she could answer, two piping hot plates of food were set down in front of us. The aroma from the plates caused our stomachs to growl in unison, causing us to both look at each other in embarrassment. I'd completely forgotten we had ordered food, but my stomach obviously hadn't.
"Enjoy you two." Mira giggled giving us a wink before she headed off toward another table that was calling for her to take their order. The wink caused a slight blush to start creeping up on me, until my belly grumbled again, pulling my attention back to the food in front of me.
"Thanks for the food." We called out together before tucking in to the deliciousness before our eyes. As we started our munching we fell in to a comfortable silence.
"So yummy." Wendy sighed as she put down her knife and fork. Her plate was completely empty not even a speck of berry syrup remained. I wasn't far behind her, in regards to finishing my breakfast. Though my order had been twice the size of the youngest dragon slayers, so it was only natural that it would take me longer to finish than her.
"ah ad (I'm glad)." I garbled through a mouth full of sausage and egg. She simply nodded, everyone knew the girls on team natsu were fluent in the language of 'speaking with a full mouth' and watched on patiently as I continued eating.
"That really put a fire in my belly." I sighed, feeling the contentedness of a full stomach wash over me.
"You sound just like Natsu-san." Wendy giggled, causing my face to colour all over again. I knew how much I could sound like the older fire wizard, he had been my idol ever since I was little when he's rescued my dad. But for some reason the idea of being compared to him by the girl I was madly infatuated with caused my heart to hurt a little.
"Ah so about the type of job we should go on?" I asked. Deciding that changing the subject away from Natsu-nii was a good idea to avoid thinking to far into my earlier thoughts.
Wendy tilted her head a little showing her confusion at my sudden change in topic, but didn't question it which I was grateful for. "What about a bandit scouting job?"
"Really?" Her suggestion catching me off guard. Wendy hated fighting and usually went out of her way to pick jobs that avoided fisty cuffs at all cost, where it was possible to do so. Being a wizard usually meant fighting would pop up somewhere along the way though; it was an inevitable part of the job description.
"Yes really, why is that so strange?" She huffed folding her arms in protest. Nope could not stop my face from colouring at her adorable display.
"I'm sorry." I replied trying not to chuckle at how pouty her face still was. "It's just not a job I expected you to pick was all. I know you don't like to hurt others."
"That is true." Her pout receded as she looked up to meet my gaze. "But I've realized that it's something I can't avoid forever and I need to improve my combat abilities so that if we ever get attached again I can help keep everyone safe, aside from just being able to heal them."
"That makes sense." I nodded at her logic. "But I think you are a pretty awesome fighter already."
"Thanks." She mumbled fidgeting in her seat keeping her eyes fixed on anything but me. Had my comment upset her some how?
"A Bandit take down job it is then." I stated, changing the subject. My plan was to make her fall in love with me, not upset her. "I think I saw a couple of those posted on board."
"Let's go take a look then." Wendy smiled her eyes shining as she grabbed her plate and walked over to the bar to drop it off. She was always so considerate! Sighing at the sight of my favourite female dragon slayer, I followed her lead and took my plate up to Mira to save her the extra hassle of having to pick up our used cutlery. Once that was done we made our way over to the job board to decided which one we wanted most out of the bandit ones that had been posted.
"This looks good." I said holding up the flyer to show it to Wendy. "Says the reward is 350,000 jewel for defeating a small dark guild just outside Clover."
"What about this one?" Wendy said at the same time. "Its a bandit group causing mayhem in Onibus."
We both stopped talking as we realised we were speaking over the other, both of our cheeks seemed to colour in unison, then we both burst out laughing.
"I'm sorry." We both said in sync again which caused even more giggles to ensue. After we managed to get our laughter under control we went back to trying to find the perfect mission.
"Urm." I turned my attention back to Wendy as she held up a slip of paper. "What about this one?"
"Let's see." I took the request and read it over. "Supply routes to a hospital just outside of Oak town are under attack by bandits, reward is 150,000 jewel. This seems good to me."
Oak town was where the old Phantom lord guild had been based and it was a solid two day round trip plus however long it took us to finish the bandits off, it was the perfect destination.
"So what do you think Romeo-kun?" Wendy whispered nervously. Whoops I must have been pondering for too long.
"I think it's the one." I grinned back at her reassuringly. Which caused her face to light up in a beaming smile, that once more caused my heart to race in delight.
*Wendy's P.O.V*
After we'd decided on which job to take, we had decided to both head home and pack for the trip and meet back up at the train station at 12. So here I was sat on the bench waiting for both our train and my newest team mate to arrive. I decided to grab one of the books I'd brought with me to read while I waited. I still had 20 minutes before Romeo-kun would be late, so might as well pass the time leisurely.
"Whatcha reading?"
The voice caused me to jump a little as I'd been so enthralled in the pages of my book that I'd not sensed him approaching. Maybe reading so intently in public alone wasn't such a smart move. I was sure if Carla had of been around to see this scene, she would have scolded me without reproach. I knew who the voice belonged to of course but that did not excuse me for my absent minded-ness.
"Just a fairy tale that Levy-san lent me." I replied to my companion who had taken the seat next to me.
"Is it any good?" Romeo inquired, tilting his head in that cute way he had when he was interested in something.
"Oh yes, I think it's amazing." I thrilled in delight, it was nice to have someone beside the other girls to talk to about books. Though I got the feeling Romeo-kun was only being polite by asking about it. But that didn't matter, he was showing an interest in my likes that was a good sign wasn't it?
"What's it about?" He asked with genuine interest. This caught me off guard, so he wasn't merely being polite by asking about the book after all...This realization caused me to blush a tiny bit.
"It's about a kind king who does his best to broker peace between his nation and the magical world of fairies and other magical creatures." I explained hoping it didn't sound to boring too the young fire mage.
"Is that the one with King Makarov?" He exclaimed his eyes sparkling, before he blushed, cleared his throat and tried to regain his calm. He obviously was trying to play the part of cool guy. It made my chest all warm to see him act so free around me, even if it was just for an instant.
"So you've read it before?" I giggled unable to contain it at his display.
"When I was a kid." He mumbled looking away from me, as if recalling a distant memory. "I spent a lot of time in the guild hall while dad was out working, so I read all sorts of books from the library. That one was a favourite of mine."
"I can see why, it's really great." I smiled, happy that I got to hear a little bit about Romeo's childhood, he didn't often speak of it, to anyone. I put my bookmark back into the book, to mark my place and closed it before slipping it into my satchel. Seeing as Romeo-kun was here now it would be rude to ignore him and just continue reading. It was a good thing I did too, as just a second later the train pulled up to the platform and sounded it's horn to let everyone know it had arrived.
"Let's grab some seats near the food cart." Romeo-kun cheered, his melancholy forgotten. I stood up and gathered myself making sure I didn't leave anything behind, which I always seemed to manage and Carla would always have to fly back and grab it for me last minute. Seeing as she wasn't around this time, meant I really did have to look after myself.
"Sounds good." I agreed and followed him onto the train. Remembering just as I stepped on to the transportation to cast Troia on myself, did not want to spend the next while being violently motion sick in front of my comrade. It would not endear me to him in a romantic way at all. Yet now that I thought about it Natsu-san was always motion sick in front of Lucy-san and she never seemed to mind caring for him too much on our journeys and they were a couple.
Seeing as Romeo-kun had dashed off without waiting for me, a very Natsu-san like trait he had, I had to follow my nose to catch up with him. When I did I saw that he had managed to grab one of the comfiest seating areas in the cart that held the food area. Looked like we would be riding in style this half of the journey anyway. I was really excited as I'd always wanted to ride in this section of the train before, but due to the motion sickness issue, it was usually a bad idea to have sensitive nose mixed with the scent of food on top of ridiculous levels of nausea. So I tended to stay to the parts of the train where food smells were the least likely to assault my already upset tummy. Which meant hard wooden benches and a sore behind by the end of the trip.
"These seats are the best." Romeo grinned as I sat down across from him.
"They really are." I sighed, sinking into the cushiness of the chair. This was definitely going to be a good journey. "I've always wanted to sit in these booths."
"How come you haven't before now?" The Navy haired boy asked me, tilting his head to the side. He really did look adorably cute when he did that.
"Urm, well you see, motion sickness plus the smell of food." I began trying my best not to be too descriptive.
"Ah, I see." He replied nodding at me. "Seeing as you're always travelling with Natsu-nii that makes sense."
"Urm yeah." I shifted my gaze away. Letting Romeo-kun know it was also due to my own poor handling of transportation just didn't sit well with me, but then again it also felt like I was lying to him and that felt wrong to me too. What should I do?
"Anyway, how do you think we should handle those bandits?" He said changing the topic completely. And with that we fell into conversation for the remainder of the train journey. It seemed to fly by too, as after we had come up with some strategies, we decided to grab some lunch and just chatted away as we would do normally at the guild hall. Romeo-kun really was so easy to talk too and we never normally got to spend so much time together like this. The usual chaos of our lives usually only allowed us brief moments together, I'd say this job would be the longest time we's spent with each other in the past year. I was really happy he's asked me to pair up with him as now it meant I could enjoy it just being the two of us before normal life took over again.
"Next stop Oak Town."
"Already?" We both said at once then chuckled at the same time...we were really starting to sync up.
"It surely couldn't have been 7 and a half hours already, could it?" I mumbled slightly baffled at how the time had managed to run away from us so easily. Seeing Romeo-kun pull his own pack on to his shoulder reminded me that I should probably do the same. So I pulled my back pack on, to make sure I was ready to disembark upon arrival. Which would be in a matter of moments now.
"Let's go kick some bandit booty." The fire mage yelled, punching the air as he stood up and headed towards the exit.
"Let's." I smiled broadly at his enthusiasm and followed suit.
As we exited the train I allowed myself a second to take a deep breath and orient myself to the new smells. This place's 'parfum', to quote Ichiya-san, was pleasant not as flowery as Magnolia but more oaky...that was probably due to all the Oak trees around the place. Now, I knew how the town had gotten it's name. There was also a mix of earthy rockiness to the air as well, that also went with what I was seeing. The place was built into a massive mountain, with homes dotting all over the rock faces and on top was a giant old castle. It was honestly a beautiful sight to behold.
"Hey doesn't this town have a guild of it's own?" I asked, taking in the view as we headed towards the mayors home to check in. I was curious as usually towns this size didn't need outside help, due to having their own home grown wizards around.
"They used to." Romeo-kun replied, eyeing up a restaurants specials board. How could he be hungry again? Actually we'd eaten hours ago, of course he'd be hungry by now.
"Used to?" I cocked my head to the side confused. Wizard guilds usually stayed around for generations once they were formed, so it was rare for one to just disappear, unless something big had happened to force it to close.
"Well they went to war with a fellow registered guild and lost so had to close." He chuckled, a big grin on his face as if recalling a fond memory. Was I missing some piece of the puzzle here?
"War with a fellow light guild!" I gasped slightly shocked. I'd never heard about this, but then again I had been extremely sheltered until I had joined Fairy Tail. "Who one earth land would do that?!"
"Oh you know," Romeo laughed again as we stopped outside the major's home, it was around 8 in the evening so he wouldn't be at his office anymore. "Just a little guild know as: Phantom Lord."
"Phantom...WAIT YOU MEAN GAJEEL-SAN AND JUVIA-SAN's OLD GUILD!" I blurted out in utter shock. How did I not know about this at all? I mean I knew there was some history between Gajeel-san and Natsu-san but I'd never imagined it was due to their guilds having gone to war with each other previously.
"Ah you must be the mages from Fairy Tail we've been waiting for." A kind elderly voice said from behind me, which caused me to jump. That was the second time today someone had managed to sneak up on me, if the other dragon slayers ever found out I'd never live it down.
"Yes sir, we are." My fellow team mate replied jumping into his professional mode. I was so surprised he could just handle any situation that came up without seeming to get flustered. I was always a nervous wreck when things went awry.
"Wonderful." He beamed at us with that old grandfatherly type of smile that master was always using. "Now hopefully all of our problems will be solved. I'll let your guild know you arrived safely, but for now why don't you head to the inn where we've reserved a room for you."
"That's very kind of you, sir." I returned the elderly mans smile. "But don't we need to go over the details with you first?"
"We can do that in the morning, it's late now and you two will need all your strength tomorrow." He chided softly, his smile never once leaving his face. He really seemed like a grandfather to me, maybe it was because he reminded me of Master so much.
"If you insist." I replied, turning to see if Romeo-kun was in agreement. He nodded that he was so, I took a small breath and let my nerves dissipate for a minute, meeting with the requester was always my most dreaded part of any job. Mainly because we always got shouted at due to making too much collateral damage, so it had become a rational fear, to me anyway.
"I do." He chuckled. "Just go down this street behind my house and you'll see The Dragonfly Inn, just tell Mary that you're with Fairy Tail and she'll get you sorted in a jiffy."
"Thank you so much." We bowed in unison to show our appreciation and then headed off towards our accommodation.
"See you at 9 in the morning sir." I called back to the gentleman, realizing that we hadn't confirmed a time for our meeting the next day. We couldn't leave it open ended that was very unprofessional.
"I look forward to it." He replied, re-entering his home for the night. With that sorted I returned on my way towards the inn, it really was only a stones throw away, and we made it there in a couple of minutes. The journey was over so fast we didn't mange to return to any form of conversation.
"Hello there." A plump older woman cheerily called out as we entered. "How can I help ya?"
"Oh, urm the major said you had a room booked under Fairy Tail, Ma'am." Romeo-kun stammered taking in the full effort of the inside of the building. It was full of potted plants and birds chirping from cages, the furniture was all different kind of animal prints and the air was thick with a heavy perfume like scent that made my sensitive nose burn with how strong it was. It was very different to any other inn I'd stayed at that was for sure, so no wonder poor Romeo-kun was so taken aback.
"Ah yes, George did mention you would be arriving today." Mary smiled, fishing around for our room key behind the desk. "Unfortunately we only had one room left I hope that's ok."
"That's no problem." I smiled back at the woman. I was used to sharing a room with Natsu-san and Gray-san, and they normally put us in twin beds so that no one had to physically share a bed. This seemed to be standard protocol for Inns when they heard mage teams were arriving, probably because they never knew exactly who was arriving. They probably assumed it would be awkward for male team mates to share a bed so left twins spare for last minute book ins.
"Oki Doki then." She handed over a key with a bright pink fuzzy pompom on it. I giggled silently to myself, it looked just like what Aries-san had on her dress and shoes. "Ya'll are in room 4. Have a good night."
"Thank you." We replied as I took hold of my crushes hand and headed towards the stairs that led up to our room. The feeling of his hand in mine caused me to blush with how good it felt.
"So after we drop our bags off, do you want to head back to that restaurant we passed for dinner?" He chimed squeezing my hand a little tighter. It felt like he was asking me out on a date...was he?
"Urm yeah sure." I replied, while feeling my heart raced out of my tiny chest. A dinner date with the handsome fire mage just meant today kept getting better and better. I had to rein in my internal ecstasy, and let go of Romeo-kun's hand so that we could get into our room, as we had just arrived in front of it. I felt kind of sad that I'd had to let go of his hand as it had just felt so right in my own, but maybe I could hold it again on the way out later. With that thought cheering me back up I unlocked the door and pushed it open to see where we'd be sleeping tonight. As we took in the sight before us we both stopped mid stride over the threshold.
"Wait is that..." I stuttered not believing the sight that had greeted us. My mind was desperately trying to make sense of what my eyes were seeing. Goodness, what were we going to do, this was a disaster. I looked over to the boy who held my affections, to see his mind also seemed to be racing with what was playing out before our eyes. Least I wasn't alone in that sense.
"It is." Came the reply of my equally shocked room mate. "A double bed."
