Someone sits in the empty chair next to me. I look up and see a blond haired boy staring back at me. He is tall, has a lot of muscle, is pretty handsome, and has the icyest blue eyes I have ever seen. I realize that I have been staring at him for at least a minute when he starts to smirk.

"Like what you see?" he cockily asks. Oh no Katniss, think fast. You have to have a good comeback. Oh I got one…

"I've seen better," I say. I watch his face turn from smirking to something unreadable. Is that jealousy? Why would he be jealous, we just met?

"Oh yeah I doubt that, who?" he questions me while putting a smirk back on his cocky face.

"That is for me to know, and you to think about," I reply while keeping my face blank. I turn back to my book and feel his icy eyes on me. I resist the urge to look back at them. They make my fiery grey ones melt. What are you doing Katniss? You don't even know his name! I say to myself. I then realize that he put a note on my desk. Cato Evans

I look at him and see him staring at me with another one of his cocky smirks. "Why did you give me your number? You don't even know my name," I tell him while I scowl at the arrogant bastard.

" First of all, I know your name is Katniss because Mr. Beetee said you are my partner. Secondly, I gave you my number because you have barely spoken to me and class ends in 3 minutes. We need to contact each other for our project," he explains to me as he rolls his eyes. He says it like it is so obvious. I tell him fine and pack up my stuff.

Gale looks back at me and asks if I am okay. I tell him that I'm fine and head to the next class. PE. I put my stuff in my locker and started to head to the gym. I look at my phone to see the time and I collide with something hard. Damn it, I ran into a wall. I look up and see the boy who drove me to school today, Peeta. "I am so sorry Peeta! I wasn't looking where I was going."

"That's alright, I wasn't either. So, what class do you have?"

"I have PE, what do you have?"

"I have Mr. Beetee. Well, I have to go see you later!" We go our separate ways and I finally reach the gym. I go to the locker room and see Annie. I walk over to her and we get ready together. I am wearing a simple black tank top with some short shorts. The top is a little revealing making it look like I have cleavage, but it is the uniform. The shorts make my ass look big and I start to feel a little insecure. Annie reassures me that I look fine and we head out. Annie and I are becoming friends pretty fast. She is really nice and easy to talk to. I see a group of boys standing with the teacher, Mr. Brutus. They are all staring at this blond chick named Glitter or some shit like that.

I look at them and see a familiar pair of cold blue eyes. Cato. He is staring at me with his mouth open. His friends look at who he is looking at and they all have the same face as Cato right now. I decide to have some fun with them and tell Annie my plan. We walk over to them and as we are passing I tell them, " Close you mouths, you'll catch flies. Oh, and my eyes are up here." They all blush and start chatting among themselves while still staring at me. I don't even know why they are looking at me. I am new, not good at making friends, and not very pretty. Unlike Annie who is very friendly, gorgeous, and popular.

We gather in the center of the gym and Mr. Brutus tells us that we have to partner up with someone of the opposite gender as us. I see Annie go to a cute guy with bronze hair, he is tanned, and has sun kissed cheeks. She gives him a kiss on the cheeks and I realize that that must be her boyfriend she told me about, Finnick. I look around and see that everyone has a partner, so I decide to go to Coach Brutus to ask him what I should do when I feel a tap on my shoulder. I turn around and I am met with beautiful icy eyes. Cato.

"Do you need something?" I ask him with a scowl on my face. I may love his eyes but I am not really in the mood for his cockiness.

"I don't have a partner and neither do you, so we have to be partners," he says with his signature smirk on his beautiful face. Damn it Katniss! Stop thinking like that!

"Fine, but I wasn't paying attention. What are we doing?" I annoyedly ask him.

" We have to play 1v1 basketball. Try not to cry when you get your pretty ass whooped." little does he know I was the captain of my old school's varsity basketball team in freshmen and sophomore year. I am gonna try out this year too. Then I get an idea.

"Oh, well don't go too hard, I haven't played 1v1's before," I lie as I fight back a smile. He grabs a basketball and checks it to me. I start off with a slow dribble and he lets me get past him, I miss on purpose just to get the rebound and go to the 3 point line and shoot. Swish! He looks at me like I just shot a half court and I tell him that it must be beginner's luck. He shakes it off and I check him the ball. He does a lot of tricks and leg things and I see him fake step to the left so I go to the right and steal the ball. I run down the half court for a layup and succeed. He looks surprised and angry at the same time. I see some of his friends start to watch us. I check him the ball again and he shoves me with his shoulder and I fall to the ground. Damn he is strong! Annie runs onto the court and tells him that is a foul and I get the ball. Damn he looks pissed that he is getting beat by a girl. I dribble the ball between my legs, pretend like I am going to the left hoping he doesn't fall for it. He doesn't and I actually go left. He sprints towards me and I fake pump and shoot. We are playing 2 and 3s and the score is now 8 to 0. Cato and I both have sweat dripping off our faces. I give him the ball and he fakes me out and scores a three. He gets the ball again and he runs to the hoop and slam dunks it. I get the ball and he blocks it when I shoot. He gets another three and the whole whole class is watching. I shoot and he fouls me so I get one shot. I made it and now the score is tied. Brutus makes us tip off which Cato wins because he is so damn tall and he starts with a slow dribble. He does a few tricks and pump fakes his shot which i don't fall for and smack it out of his hands when he actually shoots. I grab the ball and run for a layup while shoving Cato as hard as I can to get to the net.

I make the shot and Annie runs to me and hugs me. Everyone is clapping. Cato comes up to me with a smirk on his face again. Damn it I thought that beating him would wipe it off his pretty face. Uhg! Why do I keep thinking stuff like that? You just met him!

"Good job, but next time I won't go easy on you," he says with a smirk on his face as he puts his hand out. I shake it and his big, calloused hand feels so warm in my small one.

"Thanks, but I was the one who went easy on you," I say with my own smirk. I start to walk towards the locker room but Coach Brutus pulls me aside and I start to have a mini panic attack on the inside. I have no clue what he is going to say but I hope that I am not going to get in trouble.

"Katniss, you are amazing! Cato is the best basketball player in the school and you just beat him. That was amazing" Brutus says with awe in his eye.

"Well I used to be the captain of my team at my old school," I tell him while blushing a little.

"Well it is quite obvious that you have skill, no one at this school has been able to beat him. You have fire and determination that not everyone has. You are the Girl on Fire, and I have something for you. I want you to be the captain of the girl's basketball team in the winter." Brutus finishes. I am so shocked I have no clue what to say. People at my old school used to call me fire girl because I lit my lab coat on fire once, but I like this new name.

"Really? Of course I'll do it! Thank you so much!" I say and go to the locker room. Annie and I change and head to class. I have language arts with Ms. Wiress but all she did during class was play a movie while muttering something about clocks. In this class I don't see any of the new friends I made. There is a group of girls, and I see that glitter chick checking out Marvel and some other guys. I take a nap and when the bell rings I run to the tree Annie told me to meet them at.

Gale, Madge, Annie, Johanna, Finnick, and Peeta are at the tree talking. Gale pulls me into a hug and I climb the tree and talk to them. Annie and I told them about PE and how I made Cato look bad. "Okay so Annie you know how Coach Brutus pulled me aside?" I ask. She nods so I continue to tell them my opportunity. "Well, he told me that I did amazing on the court and asked if I wanted to be the captain when it is basketball season!" I exclaim happily to the group.

"AHHH! That is amazing Katniss!" Annie and Madge say at the same time.

"Way to go Catnip! I knew you would be captain one way or another," Gale tells me with a huge smile on his face.

"Good job Katniss, I'm happy for you," Peeta tells me. I thank them all and Finnick, who I barely just met pulls me down from the tree in a hug. I hesitate for a moment and then hug him back. Everyone else joins and we hug for about 10 seconds. We all pull away and begin to eat our lunches. I have an apple because I was late and we don't have much food. What we do have is what I give Prim to eat.

They all talk about their classes while I just silently listen. I am not much of a talker so I just watch them with contentment. "DO IT NOW! DON"T BE A PUSSY!" we all turn our heads and see Marvel yelling at someone in his group of boys. We all decide to ignore them because according to Finnick, they are probably just trying to get someone to do a dare.

There are about five minutes left of lunch so I begin to grab my stuff to be ready to get to the next class. Then we hear the song "I'm Sexy and I know It" blaring. All of our heads search for where the music is coming from. Then I spot him standing in the middle of the lunch court with no shirt on singing along with the song. Cato is staring directly at me while dancing and singing to the song.
