Chapter 2: It is him?
"Story time, papa?" Gohan laughed at his daughter's request. The big smile and wide eyes of his little girl were enough to make him do anything for her. "Of course, Pan. Let's get ready for bed first." Pan cheered and rushed to the bathroom to brush her teeth. Now that she was 8, she was doing things all on her own, including brushing her own teeth. She did her best and rinsed her mouth, then quickly ran over to her bed where she got dressed in her jammies.
In her cute, pink jammies, Pan hopped on her bed over and over until Gohan sat down in his usual spot, in a chair set next to hers. Pan always loved it when her papa sat down and leaned back, relaxing after a long day at work. "Ready, Pan?" Pan excitedly nodded, settling down and tucking herself in. "Alright, which story do you want to hear tonight?" He asked, already knowing the answer. Pan sheepishly replied, "Mirai!" Gohan sighs with a smile on his face. "Are you sure?" Pan nodded.
"Alright, let's see…" Pan waited patiently for her father to start. She knew this story better than her own hand. Her papa began, "After the defeat of the Almighty Frieza, the universe felt safe once again…"
Pan tried to hold her excitement to listen carefully. "Suddenly! We felt a strong Ki presence coming from far away. It was none other than Frieza!" Pan shouted in unison with her father. "Vegeta, Piccolo, Yamcha, Tien, Chiaotzu, Bulma, and I all readied ourselves to face this monster once again. When Frieza finally arrived, he had a robot face and body, a completely different monster now. There was a giant man next to him too… his father, King Cold!" Pan was already shaking in her bed, knowing what was next. "I took a deep breath, thinking 'this is it. I wish my father were here,'" Pan noticed her father's voice break and reached over to hold his hand. He smiled at her. She missed her grandpa too. "Out of nowhere… a man with blue hair appeared in front of Frieza, surprising all of us. Frieza was in complete shock. He feared for his life."
Pan was skittish again. Her hero has arrived to save the day! "This man pulled out a long, shiny sword that looked like it was an artifact made by the Great Tapion!" Pan smiled at the mention of another great hero. It was definitely another favorite. "With an indescribable grace, the man sliced Frieza into pieces! It was so fast that Frieza couldn't even blink while his limbs floated around him. The man simply gave him a deep stare, and with one final swoop… he blasted the Almighty Frieza until he was no more!" Pan cheered! Her knight with blue hair saved the day. "What was his name, papa?" She asked expectantly. Gohan smiled and rustled up her hair. He then stood and leaned in to kiss her forehead. "Another night. Sweet dreams, my love." Pan was a tad bit disappointed, but she fell into a blissful sleep that night, dreaming of her hero.
She never did get his name, Pan thought as she got dressed for work. She only referred to him as Mirai, meaning "future" in Japanese. It was all her father would give her. She never understood why. Maybe it was to protect his identity? He was from the future after all. Pan placed her foot up against her bedframe to tie her shoes. She could already feel her feet sore from last night's busy day. Good thing today was Saturday. No school, yay.
Pan sighed. She looked herself in the mirror. She didn't appear too tired, so that was a plus. Maybe she could get by with a coffee… The thought of a nice, cool coffee early morning was enough to get her smiling again. Pan quickly tied her hair back with a bandana and grabbed her black backpack. She decided to wear a dark blue shirt with black jeans and her same white shoes as last night. Her bandana was white with thin, blue stripes going vertically across. She was grateful her job didn't require a uniform, just an apron and headpiece.
As Pan was grabbed her keys and phone, a thought popped into her head… Maybe Papa will tell me his name now… Pan shook her head. Her father would ask why she wanted to know. No way would he believe that she met Mirai. Plus, the man in the story was young if she remembered correctly. Maybe her age at the time. Her father was maybe 5 or 6 when Frieza came back. Mirai would be way older than her father by now. The thought made Pan cringe at the thought of her crushing over an old man. With that, she left for work.
Trunks woke up bright and early today. He was craving something sweet with a fresh cup of coffee from a local bakery he saw on his way home last night. Giving into a big stretch, Trunks yawned. Getting up from his bed, he looked around for his shirt. After changing and brushing his teeth, he stepped outside his capsule home and pressed it back into a capsule. Unfortunately, he had to hide out near the mountainside where no one can disturb him, but it did beat paying for an overpriced hotel.
Trunks ran his fingers through his hair just to make the bed head go away. Pleased with how he was feeling today, he decided he would go get breakfast and then take a quick visit to see his mom. He was sure she would be delighted to see him after all these years… for them at least. It's only been 2 for him, and he technically saw his mom yesterday. Trunks shook his head at the confusion. He took a few steps and then jumped off the mountainside, taking off into the air just before he made impact with the ground below.
Trunks flew across the clear, blue skies, unlike his gloomy, gray one. He took a look around the city and noticed very few people were up. They were mainly people in exercise gear or others grabbing their own cup of coffee to start their weekend off. With the wind blowing back his hair, Trunks flew into an alley and composed himself. He then casually tucked his hands into his trench coat and walked towards the bakery. He could already smell the coffee and donuts he wanted to devour.
As Trunks reached "La Casa de Mari" (The Home of Mari), he noticed a woman pushing a stroller to exit the bakery. Trunks quickly pulled the door open and held it for her. "Oh, thank you! Thank you so much!" Trunks lightly blushed and nodded. This mother looked like her day started yesterday, poor thing. He was happy to help though.
Pan couldn't help but look up when she heard the mother she just attended call out, "Oh, thank you! Thank you so much!" Pan's mouth dropped. She caught a glimpse of a man holding the door for that women and stroller. She looked up and yup, blue hair… Suddenly, the machine started whirring, freaking Pan out. She immediately placed the cup down and grabbed some paper towels. Crap… She thought. Is he really here?!
No later did she hear his footsteps grow louder and louder as he walked up to the register. Pan was still frantically trying to clean up her mess. "H-hello, sir. How can I help… you…?" Pan was awestruck by this man's appearance. He had blue hair and crystal blue eyes. He also gave her a big smile that warmed her insides and melted her thoughts away. She looked at his trench coat, the same as the man from last night.
"Are you okay, miss?" Pan shook her head as she noticed him staring at the spill on the counter. "I'm so sorry! Let me just clean this up!" Trunks waved his hand as if it was no biggie. Once Pan was able to compose herself a little more, she finished cleaning up and was ready to face this man… or so she thought. "W-what can I get you-" Pan cringed at her stutter. Get it together, she scolded herself. It was damn near impossible though. This man was so cute and handsome and…
"I'll take a white chocolate mocha with extra whipped cream and a caramel drizzle with 2 maple bars, please." Pan blinked until what he asked came through to her. She quickly entered it into the computer, nodded and got to it.
As she prepped his order, she couldn't believe what was happening, especially at her workplace! Pan glanced over in the man's direction. He seemed… normal. He was no knight in fancy armor by any means. He had average clothes on with average looking hair…
He had on a pair of dark blue jeans with a black shirt tucked inside. His hair was a long undercut and an unnatural blue. However, only one thing would make her believe it was him… and she didn't see it on him. His sword. Pan sighed. It's not him.
She finished his order and opened her mouth to call out his name except… she never asked for his name… C'mon Pan she thought. She looked around and, thankfully, he was the only one here. "Umm… Sir?" She held her breath as he turned to look at her. He was eyeing one of the cute kitten paintings hanging on the wall. So innocent was his expression as he smiled big at her, eyeing the donuts in a small, plastic baggie.
Trunks turned around at the sound of the barista's voice. It felt soothing to hear her speak even if she was barely saying a word. Trunks noticed he was smiling big at her and immediately felt self-conscious. He walked over to her and grabbed his drink and donuts, then sat them on the counter to pull out his wallet. As he did so, he caught her scent. He looked up and found her simply staring at him. She immediately looked back at her computer screen, waiting for him to pay. Trunks felt his cheeks go red as hers did as well. He handed her the money, and she carefully took it, almost as if she didn't want to touch him… odd.
She then turned away to insert the money into the drawer. That's when Trunks noticed her name tag. Pan… Trunks's eyes went back up to not offend her with his staring. "Thank you, Pan." The girl jumped ever so slightly… wait… Trunks got those same chills again up his spine and to his neck. It was the same Ki reading at last night. Was that from her? Trunks tried reading her Ki again and got nothing. He shook his head and thought nothing more of it.
She then intruded his thoughts, "Here's your change…sir." Trunks noticed the odd word. "My apologies, my name's Trunks," he tells her as he takes the coffee and bag of maple bars from the counter. He then decides to take his leave. Glancing at the clock to the side, he was already running later than he should to visit his parents. The earlier the better to catch his ever-busy mother. "Your change!" Trunks stopped in his tracks and noticed the few bills in her hand. He then glanced towards a tip jar with only one bill.
With a sweet smile on his face he says, "Keep it," and then walks away, the door closing so slowly behind that it felt like the universe was telling Pan to hurry up and stop him. Pan sighed as she heard the door shut. He was gone. She looked down at her hand and was in shock by his gracious tip. It was almost $90…
As Pan pocketed her tip, she walked over to the sink to wash her hands. She couldn't help but smile the whole time. Those eyes… she recalled. The way he smiled at her so innocently, without a clue that she knew about him… Pan shook her head. It's not him... This had to be someone else.
When Trunks walked over to her to grab his meal, Pan felt like running away. He had a stride of confidence, head held up as if he could get whatever he wanted… Pan's heart was pounding so fast, it was deafening. She shook her head but couldn't shake her thoughts.
When he was going through his wallet, she couldn't help but notice how fit he was, as if he trained as hard as her family did… It's not him… she told herself again. She then noticed the cash in his wallet and was very surprised when he handed her a hundred. He then made eye contact with her so fast, she honestly felt her Ki spike up and down without control. She was too embarrassed that he may have caught her staring.
Pan finally dried her hands as the thought came about, "Thank you, Pan." How on Earth did he know her name? He's from the future, so of course he would know everything about the people in the past, right? Pan tossed her paper towels in the trash bin, wiped down the counters, and then leaned against the counter. She was facing the glass door, almost accepting that this was her Mirai. Catching her own reflection, she noticed a small, white rectangle on her shirt. Looking down, she face palmed herself. Her name tag… It's not him. She convinced herself. This is foolish of her. Those were fantasies. He may not even be real… But in either case, this man was something else…
"Trunks…" She loved his name. It felt familiar yet mysterious. The name was just so familiar… almost similar to… Pan shot up, hands on the counter, facing the door, eyes wide. She pictured the man all over again. Blue hair… blue eyes… very attractive, loaded with cash, royal-like presence… That's when it hit her. Pan was disoriented now. She took a step back, reaching into her pocket and squeezing the money inside. But… Bulma and Vegeta don't have a son…
