The Ultimate Detective and The Ultimate Hope Gaiden: Kiki's Dog!

Chapter Two: Assault at Naegi Manor!

True to her word, Kiki had managed to take care of her new pet all by herself. Makoto and Kyoko had set up the new dog food and water bowls and showed Kiki how to refill them, as well as how to put the leash on and off the dog's new collar during the first week. To Kyoko's surprise though, she had been able to manage her new pet without their assistance after that. Makoto had offered a couple times to help her, only for Kiki to politely refute.

"I gotta prove to Mom that I can be responsible! I know I made a mistake by not telling you guys about him after the first day, so I gotta make up for keeping a secret by taking care of him by myself!"

Kyoko stared out the door as she watched Kiki play with her newfound companion, a proud, yet melancholy look in her eyes.

I hate to admit it, but she…she really has proven how responsible she is with that dog. Maybe I always knew she was…maybe I just didn't want to admit it…because that would mean the Kiki's growing up…and part of my wants her to stay my little girl forever…

"Mom? Are you okay?"

"Huh?" Kyoko exclaimed as she shook her thoughts away and saw her daughter looking up at her with a concerned expression in her heterochromatic eyes. She smiled and told her "I'm fine, Kiki, just lost in thought. Come on, let's go fetch your father so we can have dinner…and no feeding any to the dog."

"I know, Mom!" Kiki groaned as she followed her mother to the dining room, her new pet trotting behind her.

None of them noticed the yellow eyes in the shrubs watching them from outside.

Kyoko tucked her daughter in as her new dog lay curled up on the girl's side. Kyoko smiled as she had to admit to herself that the two did look cute together.

"Have you thought of a name for him yet?" Kyoko asked before Kiki's drowsy eyes glanced at her in surprise.

"N…no…why do you ask? Are we…" Kiki asked hopefully "…Are we ending the trial early…?"

With an amused giggle, Kyoko shook her head and told her "No; we're still going through the remaining week as planned before the final decision is made. Just…I will say that you have been taking good care of him, and you haven't neglected your social life or your homework either, so…it probably wouldn't hurt to come up with a name for him."

Kiki hummed in agreement before she admitted "I know…I've just been so focused on making sure I don't forget to feed and walk him and stuff that…I haven't really put much thought into a name. I probably should come up with one though. I can't just go calling him boy all the time."

Kyoko kissed her forehead and assured her "Well, no need to rush; think on it over the next week, and if we end up keeping him, then you can decide."

"Okay, Mom…" Kiki yawned as she felt her eyelids droop.

"Good night Kiki, I love you." Kyoko cooed.

"G…good night, Mom. I love you too…" Kiki yawned before she at last fell into slumber.

Kyoko smiled and got up before she turned around and walked to the door. She then pulled on the doorknob as she walked out of the entryway and closed the door behind her before she retreated to her room to sleep with her husband.

Kiki groaned as her eyes cracked open, her vision still hazy as she was barely able to make out a pair of piercing yellow eyes, a black face mask, and long ocean-green hair.

"Huh? Kiyo…?" Kiki muttered as the eccentric anthropologist held a finger to his lips.

"Shh…not so loud, Kiki."

Kiki yawned as she mumbled "Wh…what are you doing here? It must be what, two in the morning?"

"Yes, I apologize for disturbing you so late. It's just, do you remember what you said? About wanting to befriend my sister?"

Huh? Why is he bringing that up now? That conversation happened four years ago! Kiki's brow furrowed as she mumbled "I…I guess…but why are you bringing that up now?"

"…Would you like to meet her? She'd love to meet you, Kiki."

"…Now?" Kiyo nodded and Kiki complained "Kiyo, it's so early, and I'm tired. Maybe another day you can ask my parents if it's okay, but I need to sleep."

"Oh, my apologies, Kiki. Yes, sleep. You'll see my sister before you know it. It'll be over soon."

Over…soon? What…what does he even mean…? Kiki wondered before she caught a silver glint out of the corner of her hazy vision. What the…is that…? Surely enough, Kiyo held a dagger the size of a survival knife in his right hand, using a reverse grip as he raised it over her heart as she panicked What the…Kiyo's…trying to…kill me?! Mom, Dad, help! "EEEEEEEKKKKKKKK!" Kiki screamed as she prayed that her parents would rescue her in time.

Feral eyes opened as a low growl emitted from Kiki's side, which startled Kiyo.

"What is tha…AGH!"

"EEEEEEEEEEKKKKKKKKK!"

Makoto and Kyoko's eyes widened in panic as they shot up in their beds, awoken by their daughters terrified screams.

"Kiki…" They gasped in worried terror at their daughter's potential fate.

"Either she just had the most bloodcurdling nightmare or…" Makoto trailed off, not even wanting to think of the alternative.

Kyoko paled at Makoto's implication as she swung her legs over the bed and walked over to their closet. She sifted through their belongings in a panic before she removed an iron baseball bat with the words "Leon Kuwata" written on it in faded black marker.

"I'm going to go check on Kiki." Kyoko stated, her eyes burning with fury as she powerwalked out of the room.

"I've got Mokubo." Makoto called as he gently picked up the sleeping boy from his crib and carried him in his arms as he hurried to follow his enraged wife.

Please be okay, please be okay, please be okay… Kyoko prayed as she ran down the hall, her husband following close behind her with their son in his arms, blissfully unaware of the panic around him as he slumbered.

It was then that they heard a series of barks and masculine yells echoing from down the hall. They then skid to a halt as they watched a man race down the hall.

What the… They thought, dumbfounded as he raced past them.

Kyoko's eyes widened as she noticed his blood-soaked hand wrapped in frayed bandages as he zipped in a blur.

Is that a bite mark? Did…no, no time to worry about that now. Kiki needs us! "Makoto, let's go."

Makoto nodded and followed his wife as he contemplated the intruder's identity.

Could it be…no, I must be seeing things. Let's make sure Kiki's alright, then we can worry about who her attacker was.

Kyoko's heart broke at the sight in front of her as she and Makoto stepped into the doorway. Kiki sat upright in her bed, tears streaming down her cheeks as complete terror darkened her normally bright eyes. She trembled and cried as she had her arms wrapped around her chest, while her dog stood directly in front of her on all fours in a tense stance, as if ready to pounce at the first sight of danger.

"Kiki…my baby…" Kyoko gasped into her palms.

"Mommy…MOMMY!" Kiki cried out for her mother, who happily strode over to the bed and sat down next to her before she wrapped her arms around her daughter and pulled her into her lap.

"Oh Kiki…it's okay, you're safe. Mommy's here, Mommy's here…" Kyoko soothed her as she stroked Kiki's long, brown hair, grateful that her baby girl was alive.

At last Kiki finally calmed down, her sniffles fading until she looked up at her mother who wiped the tears from her cheeks.

"I…I'm okay now, Mommy…"

As Kyoko nodded, Makoto walked up to them and asked "Kiki…what happened?"

"It…it was Kiyo! He snuck into my room and tried to kill me! But my new dog saved me by biting his hand and making him run away!"

Kiyo?! Korekiyo Shinguji tried to kill you?! Makoto and Kyoko thought as their eyes widened at the revelation that their former student tried to kill their daughter.

But why would Korekiyo try to kill? Most of the students would occasionally complain about his behavior being creepy, but his occasional visit to Kyoko's office ensured that he was aware of their perception. He genuinely tried to improve his behavior, and it wasn't anywhere close to criminal. So why…why would he stoop to trying to kill Kiki? He tried to kill Kiki…He tried to kill Kiki!

Makoto felt a rage boil within him that he had previously reserved only for a certain black and white stuffed teddy bear of murder and destruction. His fists clenched so tightly he felt his fingernails dig into his skin, on the verge of drawing blood as he focused on the fact that one of his former students tried to kill his daughter in their own house.

"Kyoko…give me the bat."

"Ma…Makoto…" Kyoko uttered as she turned her head to look at him, taken aback by the fires of fury burning in the normally calm depths of his eyes.

Makoto grit his teeth before he practically growled "Korekiyo Shinguji tried to kill my daughter. As Headmaster, I'm responsible for the behavior of my students, and I cannot let this assault go undisciplined. Please, Kyoko…let me be the one to stop Shinguji before he escapes!"

Makoto looked at Kyoko pleadingly before she sighed and handed him the bat as he eased Mokubo into her arms.

"Just be careful, Makoto."

Makoto nodded and gripped the handle of the bat tightly with his right hand before he turned around and dashed down the hall, running faster than he ever had in his life as he tried to catch up to his daughter's would-be murderer.

"Leon, if you're listening…please, give me strength!" Makoto prayed as he glanced at his best friend's signature weapon.

"You bet, dude!" Leon grit his teeth in the Afterlife Theatre as he clenched his fists and raged "Let me at 'em! Nobody tries to kill my best friend's daughter and gets away with it!"

"Calm down, Scrappy." Leon sighed as Sayaka laid a hand on his shoulder and told him "I know how you feel, but we can't just go and interfere in the mortal world whenever we want. Makoto can handle himself, so take a deep breath."

"…Sorry, babe." Leon apologized.

"I know, and Makoto would be thrilled to know that you would charge in with him. But like I said, he can handle this on his own. Let's just send him our well wishes, okay?"

Leon took a deep breath and nodded before he laced fingers with Sayaka. They then sat in their seats in the theatre and closed their eyes, sending Makoto well wishes from the afterlife.

Good luck, Makoto…and kick Shinguji's ass!
