Chapter 1 Airplane
Kairi Emmerson was sitting in her living room, a dull place with off white curtains, walls that needed painting and a worn-out couch. Finally she had taken a week off from her stressful job to destress and relax.
A cup of tea stood beside her, an air diffuser was spreading orange blossom throughout the room to mask the smell of weed coming from her neighbour's apartment. There was a book on her lap, but she wasn't particularly fond of it so far. She had picked it up at her local supermarket, instead of going the extra mile to the book store.
Suddenly someone shoved a letter underneath her door. A little freaked out she slowly got up. 'It's probably not a secret admirer. I barely come out of the house except for work and groceries.'
Kairy inspected the crème colored envelop with her name, written in a slanted handwriting. On the back was a red seal.
"Dear doctor Emmerson,
Among our midst is a very ill patient. We heard you were a specialist in the field of blood disorders. Should you wish to help us, discretion is of the utmost importance. Your flight to the underlined address will be provided at Skyline Airlines. The ticket expires in 3 days.
Should you succeed in finding a cure you will be well compensated in whatever currency you choose.
Sincere regards
V.
Italy Volterra"
Kairi read the note one more time. It all felt rather odd. She didn't understand why they hadn't simply called for advice or why they hadn't explained the patient's condition. That way she could already start researching. The young doctor suspected it had to do something with said discretion.
'What do I have to lose?' Kairi thought 'This book isn't nearly as exciting as this opportunity.' So she packed a bag with a few clothes and some medical tools. Last minute she picked up the book 'Might as well finish it during the flight.'
There were no people she had to call to let them know she'd be out of the country. There wasn't even a cat or a plant someone needed to take care off. She liked to live a carefree life. With nothing to lose she left her apartment and hailed a cab to the airport.
After 16 hours of flying, Kairi finally arrived at Florence airport round 9 in the morning. Surprisingly there was a woman standing in the crowd with a sign, saying her name.
"Excuse me, hi I'm doctor Emmerson. You were expecting me?"
"As soon as the ticket was activated my masters sent me to fetch you."
"Of course. Please, lead the way miss…?" she asked the woman, scrunching at the word masters.
"Just call me Gianna." She smiled curtly "Did you bring any luggage?"
"No, just this. With so little information I could hardly prepare and I wanted to come as soon as possible."
"Wise decision, time is of the essence."
A cab with tinted windows was waiting to take them to Volterra, another two hour drive which was mostly spent in silence. She got a brief explanation of her 'living' conditions.
"Guests are not allowed to leave their rooms unless asked. Breakfast will be brought by your doorstep at 7. Lunch will be served in the cafeteria at 13. Dinner at 19. They expect you to work on a cure in between. Smoking is not allowed."
"Noted." Kairy replied, looking out the window.
A couple of moments later they entered the city. It was built on a hill and surrounded by mountains.
"Welcome to Volterra castle." Gianna explained, opening the doors as the cab came to a halt.
Kairi was speechless. 'No wonder they included the flight ticket, these must be very rich people living here.'
They took an elevator and walked through several long, dark corridors. Kairy barely had time to look around when they came to a halt. "This is your room. There's an adjacent bathroom to clean yourself up. Please do not leave this room until you are called miss Emmerson."
If Kairi was spooked she didn't show.
The room looked crisp. It wasn't overly fancy, but it had a decent sized bed with black sheets, a dresser, a small table and two chairs.
Slowly she unpacked the few items from her bag, freshened up and threw the book in the garbage bin as it was… garbage.
'Let's hope this adventure is better than that one.'
author's note: Hi folks, this was just a short chapter to introduce you my oc, Kairi, and to bring her to the story takes place. No worries, the Volturi will be in the next chapter. Hope you enjoy! Leave a comment if you want pleeeaase.
