Chapter 2: Fish Tacos.
School day came to an end. While Luz had left early with Willow and Gus back to the Owl House. Amity had to stay over at school in order to gain more information about the assignment on tulpas that her professor had left for her and her classmates.
But as soon as she was free from responsibilities, she left the school grounds and made her way back home to change into something more comfortable and casual… maybe she could get Luz to take notice.
She allowed herself sometime to make up her mind, trying out different clothes in her wardrobe. She didn't want to wear anything Luz has seen already.
In the end, she settled up with a long tee with shorts and sandals. She was even considering wearing some new earrings but then thought that might be too much. At least she should wear something familiar. Something that doesn't screams she's trying too much… even when she knew she was.
She sighed, sitting down on the edge of her bed and gave her forehead a few gentle taps with her closed fist. "What're you doing, Amity… it's not like we're going to be alone. Willow and Gus are going to be there… and King… and… Hooty." She said Hooty with a more intense angered tone. "There's also Eda and Lilith…"
She contemplated the idea of meeting with Lilith once again. They haven't seen eye to eye since that time where she placed a power glyph on the back of her neck in that match against Luz, back when… she thought of Luz as nothing but trouble.
She stood up and took a last look at the mirror. "Here goes nothing…" She whispered to herself and made her way out of her home.
After walking all the way to the Owl House. She stopped, just a few steps away from the door. Then mentally prepared herself by closing her eyes for a brief moment before she was rudely interrupted by Hooty.
"Hoot hoot! Are you visiting Luz? LUZ! You got a visitor!" Hooty didn't even waited for an answer when he burst into the window by stretching his head through it, crashing the window. She could hear the faint voices of her friends through the walls scolding Hooty for surprising them like that.
Her whole mental wall she prepared crumbled down alongside the window Hooty just broke down. And then, the door opened…
It was Luz, who quickly forced Hooty to go back into the front door and grabbed her hand to pull her in, making Amity to gasp in surprise, quickly drawing a light shade of red on her cheeks.
"Hey, I'm sorry about that! Come in, glad you could make it! I was starting to think you weren't going to come." Luz said and then brought her up to where the gang was.
There was Willow sitting at the couch, Gus on the other end of the room and King laying down on the dining table.
"Oh… where's Eda and Lilith?" Amity asked as her eyes scanned through the room.
"Oh, I thought I told you that they were going to be out today. They're researching some… stuff that has to do with their curse. Now that they're sharing it and all." Luz chuckled nervously.
Then Amity noticed that Luz was wearing her gym clothes. Making her blushing a little bit deeper than before. "Oh… you had gym today, huh?" She had to ask.
"Oh right! I haven't changed, I was too excited to show you guys the video games I found on the basement."
"Video… games?" Amity asked, confused.
"Yeah. I told you… Amity… where you listening in the morning when I told you I found human electronics that Eda had stacked up?" Luz asked raising an eyebrow.
But Amity wasn't paying attention… again, eyes admiring Luz in her cute gym uniform with the largest smile ever.
"Yes. ~" She blurted out with a dreamy tone in her voice before realizing what she just said. "Oh yes! I listened, yes! I just… forgot! Ha ha… human stuff, I got no idea what video games are." She tried to save face.
"Oh, well, video games are like…" Luz was about to explain but then stopped and tried to rearrange her thoughts in order to explain before giving up on it, feeling it was a much better idea to just show her. "I think you should take a look instead."
She quickly held Amity's hand, which quickly made the minty haired girl to give a soft muffled squeak. At this point she couldn't control herself.
"This cabinet, is one of the oldest types of video games that ever existed. Video games used to be showcased in places called Arcades. This one is called Fight Fighters." Luz showed Amity while Gus playing the game with a very determined look in his face.
The screen showed some weird muscular men battling against one another in a two-dimensional side-scrolling space. A cutscene ensued and one of the fighters' thrash talked the opponent.
"Doctor Karate! You killed my father again!"
Then the screen shifted to a face shot of Doctor Karate who was shown simply grunting loudly at the opponent which only made them to retaliate with a louder scream.
"You take that baaack!"
"What… is happening?" Amity asked, not understanding what is going on.
"Oh, you know. The old fashioned 'u killed my father' sort of shenanigans. It's a fun game." Luz said while Gus continued to play whispering to himself in a soft but rather entranced tone.
"Winners don't lose." He said, repeating what his character says every time he wins a round.
"Is he ok?" Amity asked, concerned.
"He's fineee! Oh look. Willow is playing Facesona 5." She quickly pulled Amity by the hand once again, making her to let out another muffled squeak on the way to join Willow on the couch while she was playing a console game connected to an actual human tv.
"Hey, Willow, how far are you in?" Luz asked while Amity looked at the television screen, she has seen one before, but this was the first time she actually saw one that worked.
"Oh, I've got no idea, but I've been maxing my social stats, if I get my guts to level 4, I can get access to a wider selection of items on the shady black-market store. Now I just need to… NO! NO! You stupid cat! I'm not tired yet!" Willow began to scream at the tv, making both Luz and Amity uncomfortable. "I don't want to go to sleep! I need to max my guts!"
Then both Luz and Amity looked at each other before Luz chuckled softly. "I keep forgetting how intense Willow can get. Let's go check on King…" She whispered.
Then they moved away from the couch and went on to look at King who was playing on a laptop on the dining room.
"Yes! Yes! Assemble my minions. Together we shall crush our enemies without mercy!" King began to click on the mouse over and over again. The voices from his so-called minions were heard marching up to war.
"FOR THE SWARM!"
"Wha- no! For me! Your King!" Suddenly, he began to get surrounded by the enemies forces, instantly costing him the mission. "No no no! Luuuz! The game is cheating again!" King then did what he did best, throw a tantrum.
"Aww, you weren't able to annihilate your enemies again, you poor thing?" Luz teased and brought King up to give a tight hug which only made him more upset.
"Stop it! My enemies shall know my wrath!"
Amity couldn't help but laugh softly, making Luz to do so aswell. "So, you wanna play something? Don't you worry. I think we will be able to play games for a while. I've been using this power generator that Eda kept as thrash."
She quickly showed her the large metal box looking thing where all the games were hooked on. "I've been using this to charge my phone aswell this whole time. It ran out of juice, but gladly I learned to keep it running with a thunder glyph, convenient, huh? Yuuup, there's no loopholes in this narrative!"
"Eh… what?" Amity asked.
"What?" Luz asked back.
"Riiight… so video games?" Amity asked, wondering what else she got in store.
"Ok. So, I'm not sure what you might be into. But it'll be fun to find out. Let's see…" Amity listened to Luz ramble about video games, she paid attention for real this time, she was focusing on spending time with her.
She was quite happy just having Luz around. And the fact that she was fixated in finding a game she could be into only made her heart to beat faster. Having Luz's full attention was… like a dream.
She showed her a bunch of games. Handhelds where you catch monsters, or break squares and farm minerals, to more old school games with pixelated art.
They were having a good time. She was having a good time.
Soon enough she settled up with a handheld game where she was tossed on an island ran by a capitalist society of animals, working for the racoon overlord. Cutting wood and doing chores. It was relaxing.
Every now and then she would look over at Luz, sometimes she was distracted, playing her own game, or helping Willow and King to make some progress.
Sometimes… their eyes met, as if Luz had known she was staring but was too polite to expose her. She simply offered a smile. Making Amity to blush and smile back before burying her eyes back on the game.
"Ok, I'm gonna leave you guys for a bit. I'm going to make some quick shopping and cook you guys something special!" Luz said motivated, grabbing King whom started to complain.
"No no! I'm not done yet!" King said while Luz replied with a soft chuckle.
"You're coming with me. You guys have fun, ok! I'll be right back. ~"
"Bye Luz! Take care…! We'll be waiting… here." Amity said nervously which made Luz to turn her head around and face her, giving her a wink in response before closing the door behind her.
Instantly, Amity's cheeks went full red, her face was on fire. She began to question if that meant something. She became so distracted in her own thoughts that she didn't realized that both Willow and Gus had moved to sit next to her.
When she was brought back to reality, she looked to her sides, to see them both staring at her with the biggest grins she had ever seen on their faces.
"So, Amity…" Willow said.
Hearing this tone in her voice, made Amity to bury her face on her hands. "You guys know, don't you?"
"I mean… at first we thought you were acting strange, but now, I think it is waay too obvious to ignore…" Gus continued.
"What's up with you and Luz, huh?" Willow asked.
When Amity heard Willow, she wanted nothing else but to bury her head on the ground and never come out. But after thinking about it for a few moments, she pulled her hands away from her face and looked down while replying to her.
"I like her… I like her a lot." She confessed, for a brief moment feeling like a huge weight had just lifted off her shoulders. Even tho, they weren't as close as they were when younger, she felt as if she owed it to Willow to give her an honest response.
"When did this happen? Not long ago you were determined to force her to quit magic." Willow reminded her of the duel they had before they became friends.
She didn't look back at Willow, her face was still on fire, but she did flinch when she was reminded about her past actions towards Luz.
"She started to appear everywhere I went. The library was my safe zone, away from my family, my siblings, school… Boscha… I never wanted to be mean to you… or Luz, or anyone. But as you already know, my family expects great things from me. One day, Luz showed up at the library. And I get her kicked out after she started hanging out with my brother and sister." She stopped for a moment and then continued.
"I didn't understand why… why even when I've been mean to her she was trying to befriend me. It's a long story but the point is, she never gave up. She let me borrow a book from my favorite book series. This gesture of kindness made me reconsider changing my opinion on her and I guess I started to open myself to the idea of being friends with her. She was nice, and no one before had been interested in getting to know me… the real me. The wall I built around myself was completely shattered by her presence and I found out… I wanted to get to know her just as much."
She finally turned her head to the right and face Willow. "Grom happened and I wanted to ask her to come with me, as my date. But I was too scared to do so. I know I haven't been the friendliest witch in the Boiling Isles. And I feared her rejection so much. And I still do…"
Willow and Gus looked at each other and both smiled back at Amity. "Well, I'm not sure how Luz feels about you, but I know that she cares for you. Otherwise, she wouldn't had offered to fight Grom for you." Willow said, rubbing gently on Amity's back to reassure her.
"Not sure what to say, I may be young, but I think you should consider telling her how you feel." Gus added.
"I want to. I'd really want to." Amity replied to them.
"Honestly, I've been shipping the both of you when I realized you had a crush on her." Willow confessed, giving her a hug. "My old bestie dating my new bestie! You're like… perfect for each other." She squealed.
Amity blushed heavily, if it was even possible to coat anymore of her pale face in a deep red color. "Willow…!" She complained.
"I'm sorry! But it's true, you two complement each other quite well. You've opened yourself so much after you two became friends and if it wasn't for you, Luz would still jump into head first into any dangerous situation she gets herself into, she has learned from you aswell, as if… you keep her grounded in reality. I'm not sure how to describe it, but both of you've changed together." Willow said, holding both of Amity's hands.
"Yeah… I've changed." Amity smiled before getting yet another surprise hug from Willow.
"Might not be today, but someday, when you're ready. Don't stress yourself over this. I promise you; everything will be fine." Willow said, making Amity to return the hug.
"Thank you."
They went back to play games afterwards while waiting for Luz, who came back an hour later, dragging a big bag into the kitchen. She didn't tell them what she was cooking, only told them that she was going to make a special dish from back home.
It had a familiar smell for them, but they weren't guessing what it was. When Luz came out of the kitchen, she called them out.
"Dinner's ready. ~"
They joined her at the dining table, their eyes were set on a rather strange dish that they never saw before.
"Ok, so, these… are fish tacos. Back home, at my street, there's this joint where me and my mom eat from time to time. Tacos are very popular in North America, where I live, although it's not a native dish. But I really really like tacos. And… well, I'd really like to share something with you that reminds me of home. I mean… obviously these are Boiling Isles' ingredients, but this is as close as home as I could make." Luz explained.
They started to take their seats at the table. Willow and Gus examined the foreign dish before Gus suddenly asked.
"Fiiiish…?"
Then King jumped into his seat and replied. "Oh, I have no idea either what she's talking about. We looked around the market for ingredients when she laid her eyes on this mermaid tail and bought it without question."
"Wait, what?! I just cooked a mermaid's tail?! Why didn't you say anything?!" Luz asked in a very upset tone.
"Hey, it's mermaid season." King shrugged.
"Ooo, I love me some mermaid." Gus replied.
"No wonder why it smells so good." Willow added and the both of them took a bite from their tacos.
"Mhm." The both of them said in unison, with the most satisfied look on their faces which only made Luz more uncomfortable.
"You're eating it…?" Luz blurted out in surprise.
"Thank you, Luz, they're so good. Why do they call them fish tacos though?" Willow asked.
"I was supposed to be making fish tacos, not mermaid tacos." She replied with watery eyes, she looked down on her tacos and gulped, she was too hungry to go cook something else, so she took the one taco in her hands and prepared herself to give it the first bite.
"I'm so sorry, you noble and beautiful creature, your sacrifice will not be in vain." Luz said in a dramatic tone while her tears rolled down her eyes and gave it a bite. She chewed on it for a few moments before gulping it down. "I hate it! Why do they have to be so delicious!" Luz complained, finding the meat quite tasty.
"Yes! Eat that mermaid meat! Digest it!" King said, encouraging her to eat the whole thing.
"Stop it, King!" Luz shouted.
Then the whole room went silent when everyone's eyes quickly turned up to look at Amity who was laughing at the whole situation, finding Luz's reaction quite adorable, and funny at the same time. "I'm sorry, I… ha ha!"
Both Willow and Gus started to laugh afterwards, making Luz to smile and began to laugh aswell.
"Aww, look at us, bonding." Luz said, finding the moment quite endearing.
Then King interrupted loudly. "Indeed, bonding over the delicious remains of this mermaid."
"Stop saying that!" Luz screamed, making everyone to go into another burst of laughter.
They finished eating the rest of their tacos. They talked about school, the games they just played and other interests, until sunset came.
Both Willow and Gus got ready to leave and Amity decided she should leave aswell. As Luz was about to walk her guests out, Eda and Lilith came back.
"Hey, kid. We're back. What's that smell?" Eda asked, intrigued.
"I cooked a mermaid…" Luz said in the most disappointing tone she could give, still not quite getting over it.
"You did what?!" Eda over reacted. "Did you even save for me?"
"You can have all the leftovers." Luz said, shivering lightly.
"Good! I'm starving!" Eda said while Lilith joined after her.
"I haven't had a decent meal in a while. "Lilith said as they head off to the kitchen.
Then Luz walked her friends outside.
"Thank you for everything Luz, I had fun." Willow said and waved up at her. "See ya tomorrow at school."
"Same thing! I hope you can join us at the Human Appreciation Society!" Gus said as both them began to walk off into the woods. Leaving Amity alone with Luz.
"Sure thing, I'm glad you did!" Luz replied as she waved up at them. "Hey, I hope you had fun too." She looked straight at Amity, making her to blush slightly.
"I did, thank you for inviting me." Amity replied and gently took the courage to grab Luz's hand and pull her away from the entrance, she didn't want Hooty to interrupt, it was distracting enough to watch him trying to eat some flies at the entrance.
"Hehe, I'm glad." Luz said. Both of them looked at each other, by now, Luz could tell something was going on. "Hm, Amity, I feel like you want to tell me something?"
"Oh, I…! Well, I…" She blushed deeply as her eyes looked at the concerned look on Luz's face. "I was wondering if you…" She bit on her lower lip and then blurted out. "Would you read the fanfic I wrote about The Good Witch: Azura?!"
"Oh, of course! That sounds exciting. I didn't know you had a thing to write fanfics aswell!" Luz chuckled softly and grinned.
Then Amity faked a smile and nodded. "Oh yes, I write fanfics all the time. Like… I've been shipping Azura with her rival, Hecate lately…" She blushed but stared at Luz's face trying to read her reaction.
"Ooo, romance. I'm liking the sound of it!" Luz giggled.
"Yeah. Their rivals to friends relationship was so well written… I just couldn't help myself. They look so cute together!" Amity kept pushing it, hoping that Luz would get the hint.
"They have, haven't they? I agree, I could see them eventually getting together at the end. They've changed so much together." Luz added.
"Like us." Amity made one last push; her heart was beating so hard at this point. She kept her hands together in order to hide the fact she was shaking.
"Oh yeah." Luz smiled and chuckled softly, hugging Amity who hugged her back. "I'm glad that we've changed so much." She faced her, making Amity to smile nervously and nod back at her.
She couldn't read Luz's eyes; she had an aura of honesty. But she couldn't tell if she knew what she meant with all this. "See ya tomorrow." She blurted out.
"Take care, Amity." Luz said and waved at her as she began to walk into the woods. As soon as she heard that Luz went back home, she began to run back home. She quickly wiped her eyes from the tears that began to shower her cheeks, feeling beaten and frustrated.
"Great… now I got to write a fanfic." She whispered.
End of Chapter 2.
Notes: Hi there, I forgot to mention on the first chapter that I didn't planned to ship the twins with Jerbo and Viney. I'm new to the fandom, so I'm unsure if those are popular ships. I do find the artwork I ran into rather charming. And I thought it'd be funny to write down the twins frustrating Amity by getting a date so easily. xD
That out of the way, I have to apologize if the video game shenanigans didn't make much sense, but I'm a gamer, and well… I just thought of silly scenarios like these. It began with me making a reference to Gravity Falls through Fight Fighters, then I thought of Willow playing Persona 5, and then I thought it'd be funny to make a joke of King playing Starcraft.
I'm sorry, maybe I will edit this out and make them watch anime or something for a future revision… maybe. My point with the video games and the fish tacos was implying that Luz is becoming homesick. After destroying her only way home in the season finale, I feel like in the series this could happen. That it finally begins to get to her that she might not come back home.
I just thought Luz could eventually try to introduce her friends to stuff from her homeworld.
I'd really like to write more about Luz, but I feel this story is more Amity focused. I'll see what I come with in later chapters. For now, I hope you enjoyed this and well, have a good day!
