Chapter One
The familiar house staring down at her brought a huge wave of nostalgia to her. She could remember the days she spent here almost as if those days had been lived through not even a week ago. She smiled and looked back at Charlie. He had her things gathered in his arms already, and he went past her to guide her up the steps.
"Bella should be up in her room if you want to head up there to see her," he said once they got inside. Kagome closed the door behind her with a soft click. She nodded and gently stepped around Charlie. "I'll put your things in your room so you can sort them out later if you want," he added on.
"Okay, thank you," Kagome said as she bounded quietly up the stairs. Bella's door was cracked open, not a sound coming from the room. She could tell she was in there, the powerful air of her aura being more than enough proof of that, and Kagome knocked on the door gently before poking her head in. "Bella? Can I come in?"
Bella looked up from her bed, startled by the sudden appearance of her cousin. She stood up, pulling down the sweater she wore so it wasn't messed up. "Kagome, hey," she said, sounding a bit awkward as she approached her. Kagome smiled and threw her arms around her in a warm hug. Bella hesitated for a second before she hugged her back. "What are you doing here?" she asked as they pulled away. "It's been a while."
Kagome offered her a small smile as they both sat on the bed next to each other. "Charlie wrote my mom and asked for me to come… to try and help you some," she said softly. "I heard you were going through a rough spot, and I couldn't say no."
Bella laughed humorlessly and sighed. "I'm not surprised," she said then. "That sounds just so… like you to do." She looked at her silently for a while, watching her just as she watched her. A few minutes later she smiled. "Thanks though… I mean it." Despite the years that had passed since they had last seen each other, Bella couldn't help but feel at ease next to Kagome. There was just something about her that was so soothing and comforting. She didn't know what it was, but Kagome just had the ability to make people feel better by being around them. Her smiles were contagious, just as her moods. She always had that trait, and she'd missed it in the years that had divided them.
She watched her younger cousin for a moment. Bella could place the worry flickering in her unusual blue eyes, and she glanced down at her lap to avoid seeing her concern eating away at her.
"How long are you gonna be here?" Bella asked, desperate to find something other than her own situation to talk about. Though it took her by surprise, Kagome let the question steal her attention, and she decided to humor Bella's obvious wishes.
Kagome shrugged, rubbing the top of her legs to smooth out the fabric there. "Dunno. Packed for a long stay. We'll see how things go."
"You definitely need to see Jake while you're here-" Bella said, only to stop herself short and glance at Kagome to see if she even knew who she was talking about. "You remember Jacob, right?"
Kagome blinked a few times as the familiar name settled in her brain. A second later, she perked up and nodded with a bright smile that ended up pulling a similar one onto Bella's face before the other girl could even realize it was happening. "Of course!" she said brightly, feeling much better at seeing Bella perked up more. "It'll be great to catch up with him, too!"
Bella didn't know if he'd remember her as well as she remembered him, but she knew how much Kagome would enjoy seeing him again.
"It's just like you," Bella whispered then, but her voice wasn't quiet enough for it to be lost to Kagome's hearing. Confused, she looked at Bella.
"What does that mean?"
Bella shook her head, laughing through her nose at the innocent question. "You're always so upbeat. I never understood how you always have so much energy. I dunno. Must be some trait I never got." She laughed again. "Maybe you're lucky- to have a life where you don't have to worry so much. Must be nice, actually."
Bella looked back at Kagome, only to feel her breath snag in her throat when she spotted a new look on Kagome's face. This one wasn't happy, but instead, it was much more closed off- sadness brimming her eyes. She was just about to take her words back when the look faded, and Kagome laughed.
"Life's too short to get down over all sorts of things," she said brightly, but Bella felt like she wasn't genuine in it anymore. "People come, people go. You shouldn't get so hung up on someone who can't stay."
"Kagome?"
Kagome shook her head, forcing a laugh that Bella swore wasn't true. "I guess what I'm trying to say is that you shouldn't worry about that boy, Bella. It might sound a little mean, but I'm serious. If he couldn't stay... if he wouldn't stay, maybe that means there's something better for you."
Bella, though she was still surprised by her cousin's heavy words, forced herself to nod. "I- yeah. Thanks, Kagome."
She couldn't shake off the dark feeling she got when she heard those words come from her mouth. She never thought someone like Kagome could bring such a dark outlook. She was used to her bright demeanor and demure nature. She felt like her cousin was different than she remembered, and it was just now becoming obvious to her.
"I'm pretty tired. It was a long flight," Kagome said then. "I'm gonna take a quick shower and take a nap. See you later Bella."
"Right." Bella glanced at the clock out of reflex. It wasn't late, but it just dawned on her how long Kagome must have been going for without much rest. "Have a nice nap."
Kagome sank down on the bed Charlie had prepared for her. The soft pink sheets and blankets under her made her smile. If she closed her eyes, she could practically see him patrolling through store isles looking for the delicate color, a color she'd been adamantly in love with as a young child, and then awkwardly purchasing them and hoping she'd still liked the color.
She let down her hair from the soft towel she'd wrapped it up in. Kagome attempted to dry the rest of the water from her hair, fluffing the towel along her drying locks. Once done, she set the towel in the clothes hamper close by her bed and flopped down on her back.
She knew Bella knew nothing of her trips to the past, so she should expect her to think of her life lacking the need for worry. Bella didn't know how she spent her days fighting demons and fighting for her life, how she spent her days hopping down a well and into the past. She wasn't aware of the jewel that had gotten ripped from her body and then shattered by her by a clumsily aimed arrow.
Bella didn't know any of the secrets she harbored from the rest of her family.
Kagome sighed and rubbed her eyes.
Now she didn't have to worry. Those days were over, so she didn't have to worry about going back down the well. But… Kagome removed her hands from her eyes and watched the ceiling above her with a distant look in her eyes.
"Something's not right," she said decisively. Something didn't feel right. That concerning feeling she had before she had left was still here, and this time it was stronger than ever. She didn't know what it was, what her instincts were trying to warn her about, and it didn't settle right with her.
Kagome rolled onto her side and closed her eyes, trying hard to fall into a dreamless rest.

Red eyes peered at her. They weren't eager to hurt her, no, They looked to her with intrigue., watching her movements, watching every little thing she did.
Kagome knew she didn't know the owner of these eyes. At first glance, she assumed they were Naraku's, but that wasn't the case. He'd long since stopped haunting her dreams and states of consciousness. His eyes only ever bore anger, maliciousness, and hatred towards her. He didn't look to her with fascination, never staying to think of her in any other way than prey and a target.
Kagome willed herself to turn away from the red glimmer, wanting to stray far away from their prying and piercing gleam.
She didn't have the patience to worry about them.
Her aura encased her as she settled down on her knees, stealing this chance to train her abilities.
Kagome trekked behind Bella, letting the other girl lead the way. She hadn't been here in forever, so she opted for the safer alternative of letting Bella lead the path. She was led to a garage, and when she peered inside she saw someone seated in there working on rebuilding a motorcycle. She stopped at the entrance, even as Bella walked in.
"Hey Jake, look who's here," Bella said. She looked at Kagome's still figure before rolling her eyes and yanking her in behind her carefully. "Come on…" she whispered quietly to her. For once that excited look in her eyes was dimmed and replaced by slight caution.
Jacob looked from what had his attention, his eyes going to the small girl hidden halfway- though not really- behind Bella. Her long hair was pinned up in a ponytail, blue eyes watching him closely. Suddenly, the gleam of those eyes reminded him of someone.
"Hey," Kagome waved, smiling as that cautious gleam faded. "Not sure if you remember me. I'm-"
"Kagome, right?" Jacob stood up, flashing her a grin that matched her smile. "How could I forget? One look at those eyes and I knew exactly who you were." He looked at Bella and laughed. "That and my dad said Charlie's been going on about his niece coming in."
Kagome laughed. "And here I was a little worried you'd have forgotten me." She stepped around Bella completely and approached Jacob to take a long look at him. There was a strange aura all over the Reservation land, but she couldn't place it. Standing near him, she could feel a faint pulse of it. It wasn't all because of him, but it had an effect on him that she could sense.
Kagome pushed the feeling away and laughed again with a quick shrug. "So what're you building here?" she asked, despite already knowing what it was. Jacob looked at it before looking back at her.
"Just something Bella wanted me to build for her," he said, and Bella made a sharp shushing noise.
"You make me sound like a bad influence," Bella said with a laugh.
"So what are you up to?"
Kagome blinked and looked to Jacob. He wasn't looking at her, instead focused on what he was doing at hand. She looked at the wrench in his hands before she looked back at his concentrated face. "Charlie asked for me to come out here to see if I could help Bella any out of her… slump," she said. "Of course I'd come. Anyway… getting away from home sounded nice, too."
"Something going on there?" he asked, this time looking away from his task.
Kagome shook her head and sighed. "No… um, not anymore at least." She didn't know what to say to him in response, and she sighed again. "It's just… been a long time since I've seen Bella or Charlie."
Jacob tilted his head to the side, meeting her gaze with a low sigh. "Wow, are you aware of it?"
Confused by the comment, Kagome frowned. At once, her mind went to the strange auras she could feel, and she worried she had been found out. "... Of what?" she asked hesitantly.
"Of what a terrible liar you are," he said with a grin. Kagome felt her muscles relax as a humorless look flashed across her face. She rolled her eyes and shoved him as she stood up, not that it phased him any.
"Very funny," she grumbled.
"So you are lying," Jacob said, following her up after a second. Bella was still searching through the toolbox and looking over the different tools there, her back turned to them. He caught how her gaze automatically went to Bella, as if to make sure she hadn't heard anything they'd said. A second later, she looked away and shrugged, avoiding looking at him and Bella.
"Alright," Jacob sighed. It was easy enough to pick up on her desire to push the topic to the side, and he humored her. He set a hand on her shoulder, tugging her into him as he comfortingly patted her on her shoulder. "Well, if you ever need someone to listen to you, you know where to find me."
His comment took her by surprise, and she tried to keep that hidden. Kagome glanced up at him, pretty sure her surprise was still evident in her eyes as she did so. "It's been how many years since we've seen or spoken to each other?" Kagome commented. "I don't think you'd be so interested in my problems."
"Time doesn't matter," he said in response. "Just… you know, if you want someone to listen without judging you, I'm here."
Her surprise faded away, getting replaced by a small smile as she nodded. "Right…" she whispered softly. "Thanks, Jacob. You'll be the first person I come to if I ever wanna talk about it."
C.R: Sorry for the delay for the update!
I've gotten some suggestions for a pairing, but I still haven't come to a decision on it honestly. I'll say that I do want it to be a crossover pairing, so it most likely won't be Sess/Kag.
I'll also say that demon companions for Kagome will come in soon!
Anyway, that's it for now. Thank you all for reading, and I hope you all enjoyed! Hopefully I caught all the errors before posting, but if not sorry.
Please remember to Review&Favorite&Follow, thank you!
Bye for now~
