Note: Thank you to everyone for commenting on the first chapter, and I'm so sorry to keep you hanging! This is a short chapter, I know, but this story won't be too long (I think...) Really I just want to keep writing Seth/Jess fluff forever, but feel like this may eventually become too "samey" and repetitive. So I'm trying to conjure up different stories that are interesting...hence why I love doing one shots so much! Anyway, I hope you enjoy!
Seth's stomach dropped. Who else could have bought Jessica flowers? He felt hurt, but wasn't exactly sure why.
"Who's your secret admirer?"
Seth finally broke the comfortable silence between them whilst Jessica put the milk into the fridge. She turns to face Seth as she closes the fridge door.
"Oh, those? They were from Michael Haggerty. He sent them from New York."
Seth didn't know much about Michael Haggerty, except for the fact he seemed to put Jessica in danger every time he saw her. For that reason, Seth's opinion of him was bitter at best. And now he has the audacity to send Jessica flowers for Valentine's Day?
"He sure knows how to be original."
Jessica smirks at Seth as she continues to put the rest of her groceries away. Jessica could feel a sense of jealousy and competition from Seth towards Michael, even though they have never met.
The fact Seth was feeling this way didn't bother Jessica at all. She knew, deep down, Seth loved her deeply. Maybe not romantically, but certainly enough to be protective of her, especially around men.
"He really is a lovely man, once you get to know him, Seth."
Seth raised an eyebrow at Jessica.
"Ayuh. That means he's a complete pain in the backside until you know him enough to tolerate him."
Jessica rolled her eyes at Seth as she finally sat down at the table, handing him a cup of coffee as she did.
"Yours mean more to me, Seth."
Jessica broke the silence by directly looking at Seth with a warm, subtle smile tugging at her lips.
Seth felt his heart swell at her comment. In this moment, there was something truly captivating by how Jessica looked at him. The sunlight was beaming through the kitchen window, casting a wonderful glow onto the side of Jessica's face. Her beautiful eyes shone brighter than any diamond could whilst her alluring smile made Seth feel almost giddy.
"Seth?"
The sound of Jessica's voice brought him out of his trance.
"Oh, I'm sorry Jess. I zoned out then. But, I'm glad you feel that way. You mean so much to me, Jess."
With that, Seth reached across the table and gently laid his hand on top of Jessica's. Almost by instinct, Jessica turned her hand over and held his softly.
"Seth...I want to ask you something...it might seem crazy, but..."
"You know you can ask me anything, Jess."
Jessica suddenly looked a bit nervous.
"Do you...do you love me?"
Seth was taken aback.
"I - Of course I love you, Woman. Always."
Jessics blinked and smiled again.
"I mean, do you love me more than...more than my friend?"
Seth felt a tinge of panic set in. Oh no. He just wanted to do something sweet for Jessica, he didn't want to make her feel uncomfortable.
"I - I don't know. All I do know is, I love you Jessica, and the last thing I want is to hurt you and cause an uncomfortable atmosphere."
Jessica smiled again at him.
"You could never hurt me, Seth. The reason I ask is, well lately, I've noticed a sense of jealousy around other men when we are at an event or even when I mention them. I want you to know, none of them interest me in that way."
Seth looked down to the table. He felt embarrassed. He thought he had hidden it well. He also secretly felt crushed by the revelation men didn't interest her anymore. Not that he blamed her, after Frank's passing. If they didn't interest her, he knew he had no chance. Fit, charming men like Michael Haggerty - how could he compare?
