London, November 1, 1906
"Let's go Harry! Were going to be the last one there!" a young boy with dirty blonde hair yelled out as he ran through the doors of the orphanage out into the streets of London.
"I'm right behind you Rob." Another young boy with messy black hair with piercing green eyes spoke up from the side of Rob.
"Then let's get going Harry." Rob said as he grabbed Harry around the arm and started pulling him down the street towards where the other kids were playing.
"Now where do you two goops think you're going." A harsh yet motherly voice said from behind the two. Slowly turning around the two came face to face with one of the nuns who helped at the orphanage, Sister Rose.
"We were just going down the road to play with the other kids, sister." Harry responded in the most polite way he could.
"Really? Then who is going to help me look after the little ones or help when it's time to go down to the shops?" Sister Rose asked with an arched eyebrow.
"But sister! We've been doing chores all day!" Rob wined, but before he could continue Harry spoke up.
"It's okay Rob, you go play and I'll help Sister Rose." Harry said, placing his hand on Rob's shoulder. Giving him a smile Harry pushed Rob towards the other kids.
"Thanks Harry!" Rob shouted running down the street. Turning around Harry looked towards the sister who gave him a kind smile in return,
"We might just make a Gentleman out of you yet Harrison." she said walking back towards the orphanage.
Catching up to the sister, Harry asked, "What's a gentleman sister?"
"A Gentleman Harrison is what all men should aim to be. They are the best a man can be. They are well mannered, dependable, forgivable, polite, and sincere. They do what needs to be done. Whether that's protecting the ones they care for, serving their country, or something as simple as opening a door for a lady. As i said they are the best a man can be." The sister said with a dreamy look in her eyes.
"Okay, I don't see why I should want to be one" Harry said, not really caring.
"Well you should care because they are the knights of today. Which one would you rather be, Harrison a normal man or a Knight?" She asked
"I would want to be a knight of course!" he shouted in excitement.
"Then do as I say Harrison and you will make a great gentleman." She said before giving him a smile.
"I wont be great, I'll be the best one ever!" he stated before running ahead to open the door for the sister.
July 27, 1909
"Harrison I will need to head down to parliament for a couple hours. Look after Clementine and Diana till I get back. Understood?" A man with red comb back hair and blue piercing eye asked the lad in front of him.
"Of course Sire. It would be my pleasure Sire." Harry told his mentor/father figure.
"Good lad, when I get back we'll go over some of the bills and budgets that have come across my desk recently." The man said, "Also for tonight I want pasty for dinner and make sure Clementine doesn't try to cook. She needs her rest."
"Yes Sire I will have dinner prepared by five-thirty." Harry replied, walking the man to the door, "Don't worry sire I will take good care of your family till your back."
"Be sure you do Harrison. If you do a good job we will go over your sword play tonight." He said patting Harry on the shoulder.
Opening the door for his mentor Harry watched him walk out into the streets. Closing and locking the door behind him Harry walked further into the house heading for the kitchen. Reaching his destination Harry set to work on making the pastry for the night's dinner.
"Was that Winston that just left?" A voice spoke up from behind him.
Turning around Harry responded, "Yes Lady Clementine, Sir Winston just left for parliament."
"How many times must I tell you Harry to call me Clementine, Clem, or even mom." Clementine said exasperated.
"It's not proper my lady. Especially after all you and sir Winston did for me." Harry said.
"Harry, you live with us, eat with us, look after us, you're practically part of the family already. Now stop being a goop and accept it. I want Diana to have an older brother to look up to when she gets older."
"I know my lady. It's that I'm here because Sir Winston was gracious enough to mentor me when Sister Rose asked him to. I'm eternally grateful for the opportunity and I don't want to mess this up my Lady." Harry stated.
"Fine, be that way but one day I will have my way mark my words. Now what are you making?" She asked
"Making pastry my lady, Sire wanted to have pasty tonight. He also told me to not allow you to help and that you should be resting. So may I get you some tea?" He replied, giving her a smile.
"It's been awhile since I've had a pasty. And yes I will take you up on that offer for some tea." She said before getting up and heading back up stairs.
Smiling to himself Harry got work on making some tea.
Later that night in the dining room the sound of metal clashing together could be heard ringing throughout the room. "Nicely done Harrison. Keep this up and you'll have no problem joining her majesty's forces." Winston said blocking a swing from his right.
Locking blades Winston was able to with a flick of his wrist disarm Harry, "Not bad at all Harrison. It won't be too long till you're better than me."
"Thank you Sire, but I don't know about being better than you." Harry said while picking up his sword.
"Don't sell yourself short Harrison. You're learning everything I have to teach as if tomorrow is your last day. For now though let's retire to my office I want you to look over a budget that I was presented with a few months ago that's been giving me some trouble." Winston said walking out of the dining room heading towards his office.
Settling down in the office Winston hands Harry the papers for the budget. "That Harrison is a budget presented by Chancellor George called the people's budget. Read it over and let me know what you think."
The People's Budget was a proposal that would basically introduce heavier taxes upon the wealthy. These taxes would then be used to fund new welfare programs. "It looks like a good idea Sire, but I could see where you would meet some resistance from the house of lords."
"And that is where the problem lies. The proposal would target them specifically, and those bastards don't want to give up any more money. It would be the helping hand that the people need. So tell me Harrison what would you suggest that needs to be done to get this proposal through?"
"I'm not very sure Sire but perhaps hold some gatherings for the people to come to where someone could explain what the proposal is and does. If that works hopefully you would be able to have the people start pressuring those in the house of lords to let it go through."
"Not a terrible idea." thinking for a moment to himself Winston continued, "Hmmm, yes, yes that could work. Alright Harrison tomorrow i'm going to bring this up with Herbert and David and see what they think. If we're able to get this to work it will bring about a change that's for sure."
From there the topic of politics was dropped for the rest of the night. The two spent the next hour going over the happenings of the day from topics of Harry's chat with Clementine that morning, to Winston's walk through the park that evening. They would have continued talking if it wasn't for the interruption of a baby crying.
Harry hearing baby Diana crying moved to get up but was stopped by Winston, "Don't worry about her Harrison I'll go take care of her, you head to bed. Tomorrow I want you to come down to Parliament with me. I'll have a nurse come by and help Clementine and Diana." Winston said before head off to check on Diana.
Happy to be able to go straight to bed Harry couldn't help but wonder what tomorrow would bring. It wouldn't be his first time in Parliament nor his second. He was more nervous about meeting the Earl of Oxford and the Earl of Dwyfor. It would be his first time meeting people of such standing, he really hopes he doesn't make a mistake and embarrasses Sir Winston.
