TRIGGER WARNING: Major character death and a bit of graphic violence. I'll admit, this is the saddest story I've ever written by far... but this one is a two-shot, so this is only part one of this. Now enjoy...

The Death of Professor Utonium, part 1.

The city of Townsville! It all started out like any other normal day, happy and sunny. There were no worries and no villains out to ruin anyone's day. The Powerpuff Girls were even taking the day off! Since Professor Utonium was off running errands and the girls needed someone to hang out with, he had asked the people he trusted the most: Mario and Luigi.

Because they had been around the girls' and professor's lives for a long time, the scientist felt it was more fitting for the girls to hang around someone who are heroes as well, he entrusted them to be their fathers/god fathers if he were to be gone from their lives. They were really good role models for the girls anyway.

"Now remember girls, be good for the Mario Brothers! Stay out of trouble, and if there's anything wrong, call me," the Professor said. "I'm sure you men know what to do regarding the girls."

Mario smiled and waved a hand. "Don't worry, Professor, Luigi and I already know!" he said. Luigi nodded with a small smile.

"Bed time's at 7:30, take very good care of them, make sure they're doing their homework, and make sure they're not being a pain in the butt, okay?"

"Okie dokie!"

Professor Utonium nodded in approval smiling. "Good! I'm off now. Bye girls! Love you!" he said before walking out the door. Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup waved goodbye to the scientist as he left the room, leaving the heroes to themselves.

All went well for a while. The Mario Brothers and Powerpuff Girls played a few games, watched some TV, Mario made sure the girls did their homework, and they ate some food. But it was now around 5 in the afternoon, and it has been some hours since the professor's left for errands. It had taken longer than any of them expected; not to mention that it was pouring rain outside. Blossom was reading a book, Bubbles was looking out the window, Buttercup was watching TV, Mario was on the couch with the green clad, and Luigi was on his phone at a table.

"Luigi? Do you think the Professor will be back soon...?" Bubbles asked worriedly.

The green plumber didn't know what to say, because he hadn't gotten a text from the Professor all day and he himself was getting worried. What was he supposed to tell her? That the scientist was probably kidnapped or arrested? Or worse case scenario, dead? He took a big breath and looked at the child. "I'm sure he's going to be back soon. Maybe he got held up in traffic?" Luigi suggested.

"Whatever's happened, he'll be here before you know it," Mario added.

All of a sudden, the hotline rang from the girls' room, startling Luigi out of nowhere. Blossom flew to the room and the girls followed suit. When the pink clad answered the phone, it was the Mayor. But when she answered, his voice sounded... different.

"Powerpuff Girls! You and those Mario Brothers have got to save Townsville! Mojo Jojo is destroying the town again!" the gravely voice said.

Blossom cringed at the voice. "Mayor, are you... okay?" she asked worriedly. "You sound a bit off."

The voice coughed. "Huh? OH, this? Yes. I, the mayor of Townsville, am fine! I just have... a nasty little cold, that is all. But yes, nonetheless, do not worry about me! Worry about the town!"

"Okay... well, I hope you feel better mayor! Get plenty of rest and drink some liquids!"

Blossom hung up the phone and flew to the Mario Brothers, who were up and ready to go.

"Let me guess, the mayor needs us?" Mario asked.

"Yeah! The mayor said he was sick... poor guy... But Mojo was about to destroy Townsville again!" Bubbles replied. "We gotta stop him!"

Luigi nervously raised his arms up in order for Bubbles to fly him to Mojo's lair. "L-let's-a go..." he said.

Blossom and Buttercup grabbed Mario and Luigi's arms and flew them inside the lair while Bubbles followed suit. They broke in, and when they looked around the lair, Mojo Jojo was nowhere to be found. "...do you think he's planning to make a secret attack on the town?" Bubbles inquired.

"No, but he IS planning to DESTROY YOU GUYS!" a voice shouted from behind. The heroes looked from behind, and there was the mastermind himself, Mojo Jojo. He flipped on the switch and behind the monkey was the professor all tied up against the wall. His hands and feet were all tied up so he had no chance to escape. He was scared for life, letting out a small gasp. "G-girls...!"

"PROFESSOR!" The girls screamed. Mario and Luigi just glared at Mojo.

"What do you WANT with him, Mojo?" Mario asked with gritted teeth.

The evil genius just laughed maniacally. "Oh, what do I want, you ask? I, Mojo Jojo, want to take over the WORLD! With you and your pathetic brother, those blasted Powerpuff Girls, and the dastardly professor out of the way, I will have the Chemical X by my side, MILLIONS of bottles with me! And there is NOT a thing you can do about it!"

Buttercup growled while her other sisters looked angrily at Mojo. "ENOUGH SMALL TALK! Let's settle this once and for all. You are going down, Jojo," Buttercup said.

"Alright! Luigi, you get the ropes off of the professor, the girls and I will handle Mojo," Mario said, handing him a fire flower then grabbing a fire flower on his own and eating it, turning him into Fire Mario and enhancing his fire powers.

Luigi nodded, ate the fire flower, became Fire Luigi, and rushed to the Professor's side in order to burn the ropes. Bubbles turned herself into racoon Bubbles thanks to the leaf, Blossom turned into Ice Blossom, enhancing her ice breath thanks to the ice flower, and Buttercup stuck to her strength. She felt like she was much stronger without those powerups, anyway.

Cracking her knuckles, she glared at Mojo with all her might and charged at him with a punch. Mojo dodged her attacks and tried to shoot her with his laser gun, but Mario shot a bunch of fire balls at the monkey. One just bounced off the walls, but one made it towards his back and burned him. But it wasn't enough to stop Mojo. He shook off some of the flames like it was nothing.

He then landed a powerful punch to Mario, but it wasn't enough to knock the red plumber unconscious; although he DID lose his fire flower form. Bubbles flew around Mojo several times to make him dizzy, then Blossom enhanced her ice breath to freeze him up against the walls, and Buttercup punched him repeatedly in the guts.

Luigi was having trouble reaching the top left, where the Professor's hand was, all tied up. So Mario got onto Luigi's hands and burned the second to last ropes. Then the green plumber shot a fire at the top right, burning the very last of the ropes. The professor almost toppled to the ground and then smiled at the Mario Brothers. "Thanks, you guys," he said as he hugged the two men.

Mario and Luigi hugged back. "It was-a no problem," Mario said.

"My goodness... I was so worried for being gone so long, I mean, I know the girls can handle themselves, but... I don't want them feeling like they're alone all over again."

"Well right now, they're just fine," Luigi replied. "You're the girls' father. You should know that."

"Y-yes, but... they're still kids! They just-"

All of a sudden, they heard a high pitched scream. It sounded a lot like Bubbles!

When they rushed over to the girls' side, Buttercup was brutally beaten and Bubbles was holding onto the lime green clad. Buttercup, Bubbles, and Blossom all lost their power ups and Blossom was almost as brutally beaten as Buttercup was, but Bubbles was bleeding from the shoulders. Mojo was laughing at the girls evilly and had his laser gun pointed at the girls. The gun was filled with antidote X, and if the girls were shot with it, what were they going to do now?

Mario was furious. So was the Professor. Luigi wasn't as mad as they were, but he was extremely worried about the girls. They were like his pride and joy. He took a step forward with a brave face and shielded the girls along with Mario and the Professor. "Mojo, please-"

"DON'T TAKE ONE STEP FURTHER, GREEN ONE!" Mojo yelled.

Luigi, scared of his mind, froze in place and Mario growled at Mojo. The girls were halfway to dying, but they were still determined to beat the evil monkey. Buttercup shot her laser eyes at him, but he dodged and threw in a punch at the black haired girl, but Bubbles stepped in and took the hit. Blossom gasped in shock and weakly blew her ice breath.

A measly bit of ice got onto Mojo's shoulder. He flicked it off like a tiny little bug. "You REALLY thought this would stop me, Blossom? And here I thought you were the SMARTEST leader of the Powerpuff Girls!" he exclaimed.

Blossom got onto her knees and let out tired little wheezes. "You... won't get away... with this..." she muttered.

Mojo only let out a tiny laugh. "You don't think I will? Just watch me.

"Now listen and listen good, Mario Brothers and Professor Utonium. If you dare take one single step towards these pathetic little girls... I will not hesitate to end their lives right then and there. It would be highly ill advised for you to take such drastic actions. Or else you are risking your OWN lives, and becoming a bunch of cowards. So what choice will you make?"

Mario and Luigi looked at each other nervously. What choice did they HAVE, was the real question. If one of them were to step up, they or the GIRLS could get shot quickly. But if none of them stepped up, then the girls were going to be dead either way.

"Mojo... please... don't kill my girls. They're my family," Professor said kneeling down next to his daughters. "I'll... I'll do whatever you want. You want the Chemical X? I've got it! I just don't want the girls dying... with or without Chemical X."

The evil monkey just laughed. "Oh, dear Professor... if you would have said so before, I would've gladly accepted it and held you hostage. But now? It's far too late. You've had long enough to decide to submit yourself to me. I almost made you do it last time, but YOU resisted and waited for your precious little girls to save you! AND FURTHER MORE-"

"Mojo please...!" Blossom pleaded. "Just... kill us. You need this more than we do..."

Bubbles and Buttercup remained silent but their expressions were hopeless. All they wanted to do right now was to give up.

Mojo grinned evilly and cocked his gun. "Very well. It was nice knowing you girls. Well, not really. I've always sort of hated you. Goodbye, Powerless Girls."

Slowly, the genius pulled the trigger, and around that same time, the Professor jumped in front of the girls. "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!"

It was like time slowed down in front of the girls. Their father jumped sideways, and the laser hit his chest, causing him to bleed out a bit. Mario and Luigi gasped loudly and rushed over to the professor's side. Blossom, Bubbles, Buttercup, and Mojo stared at the now dying man in shock. Nobody had expected this... not at all.

"Professor, stay with us...!" Luigi said trying not to cry.

The scientist coughed a little bit, feeling weaker than before. When he jumped in front of Mojo's blast, he saw his life flashing before his very eyes. He never thought it would have to end like this. "Luigi... Mario..."

"What is it...?" Mario asked, sitting him up. "Whatever you need, Luigi and I will do everything we can."

The Professor's eyes watered a little bit, almost on his way to die. "Thank you... for everything you've done for the girls... take good care of them... for me... tell my girls... I love them."

With one last breath, he closed his eyes slowly and exhaled softly. Luigi was in tears at this point and couldn't hold it in anymore. Mario covered his face with his hands and hid his tears away. Blossom and Bubbles hugged each other crying, hearing everything the Professor said. Buttercup just angrily stared at Mojo, who was still looking at the corpse in shock. He didn't think he'd actually do it; the man took care of him when he was a baby, but then when an accidental splash of Chemical X hit his head and the concoction to make the perfect little girls, he became envious. And envy turned into wrath. Now he just wanted to destroy everything in Townsville because he could.

With those dastardly girls in the way, he just couldn't. Time and time again, he was beaten; but this time, he finally killed the person who never wanted this, who had the Chemical X that the villain wanted... Professor Utonium.

"You... freaking... MONSTER!" Buttercup screamed and charged towards Mojo Jojo. The monkey didn't see this coming and didn't have time to retaliate. The lime green clad beat his face in until he was barely recognizable and Luigi got her off of the poor monkey.

"LET ME GO! I'M NOT LETTING HIM GET THE HELL AWAY WITH THIS-"

"I know- I know Buttercup, but please..." Luigi sharply whispered.

Buttercup shakily raised her fist at the barely conscious Mojo, then gave up, kneeled down, and started crying loudly. Bubbles was still crying during all of this and Blossom was just in shock. She wasn't crying, she wasn't speaking, she wasn't moving, she was just... too much in shock to process everything. Luigi just held the girls close and was trying as hard as he could not to cry.

Mario called the police, telling them every detail in this situation, and when he hung up, he stayed close to the girls and Luigi, but was still near the Professor's body just in case something happened to it. When the police came to the lair many minutes later, they found Mojo muttering to himself as he paced back and forth, the professor's body, and the Mario Brothers just hugging the girls close as the children cried.

Mario got up and asked one of the cops about what was going to happen now. The cop just explained that since they have no father now, they would have to either go to an orphanage or find someone else to live with. He and Luigi gladly volunteered to be the girls' guardians, and Mojo just begged the officer to take him away because of the guilt he was going through.

So once again, the day was saved... but at what cost?
