We dove down towards the village, curious as to what the dragon was digging for. Gobber saw us coming and hobbled over to us as we were getting off of our dragons. It didn't take me long to realize that the dragon was Firewing.

"What's the matter, lass?" he asked, when he saw me there. "I din't expect to see ye back here jus' yet." He obviously hadn't seen Firewing.

I ignored Gobber's comment and ran towards the house. Stormfly followed me, starting to move the embers around where Firewing was digging. Hiccup didn't waste any time coming to help, the two of us working together to move the burned logs. Before long, a small crowd had gathered around us; although neither of us paid the people any attention.

Hiccup and I were moving the last of the smaller logs, when he just dropped it. Knowing that he was paying a little more attention to what we might have been digging up, I turned and gasped.

"Days…" Laying in the ashes was my little sister, covered head to toe in soot and ashes from the fire. She looked almost peaceful, which I didn't take as a good sign, because it also meant that she didn't look alive either. I made to pull her out of the pile of embers, with some difficulty as she was almost as big as I was. Hiccup grabbed her feet and moved to help pull her out of the ashes.

I pressed my ear to her chest, looking for a heartbeat, her breath, anything that could give me any indication that she was alive. It took me a couple minutes, but sure enough, there was a heartbeat. My sister was alive. I almost laughed, I was so happy.

Firewing came over and nudged her shoulder with his nose. When she didn't wake, he tried again. Hiccup, realizing that Firewing likely wouldn't stop trying to get Daystrid to wake up, moved around me to try and pull the dragon's attention from his rider.

With some difficulty, I stood with my sister, pulled her onto Stormfly, and took her up to Gothi's hut, paying no attention to my parents standing as part of the crowd that had gathered. It wasn't like they cared about her anyway.

Hiccup

As Astrid checked to see if her sister was alive, I kept an eye on Firewing. After we'd found Daystrid, he'd gone and sat near Stormfly and Toothless, watching us intently. As soon as he saw Astrid sit back, relief obvious on her face, he'd come over nudging his rider. I could hear him saying her name; he was trying to get her to wake up.

I stood up and walked over to him, putting my hand on his neck, just behind his horns. This took his attention off of Daystrid for the time being, so Astrid was able to take her sister up to Gothi.

"I'll take care of Firewing," I told Astrid as she pulled her sister onto Stormfly. I wasn't sure she heard me, however, as she didn't acknowledge that I'd said anything.

Firewing made a move to go after Astrid, so I stepped in front of him, trying to get a message across without having to say anything. If there was anything I'd learned in the past few years when dealing with the dragons: when they're worried about someone or startled, they respond better to someone speaking dragonese than someone speaking english.

He stopped in front of me, letting me touch his nose, understanding that he needed to let Astrid take Daystrid away so she could get help.

Behind me, I heard Dad telling the people to get back to what they were doing, there was nothing to see. After the crowd dissipated, Dad came up to me. I didn't break eye contact with Firewing, knowing it was likely the only reason he was staying where I was.

"How did you two know she was there?" Dad asked.

"What?" I turned and looked at him, not taking my hand off of the dragon in front of me.

"Daystrid. How did you know she was there?"

"We were flying over the village and saw Firewing here digging in the ashes. He must have been able to tell she was there."

"Ah." My answer seemed to be enough for my dad, as he nodded and walked away. I turned back to Firewing who had seemed to calm down a little more. He was still looking up towards Gothi's hut, but that was completely understandable.

Astrid- Gothi's Hut

I heard a knock at the door not too long after Gothi had started looking over my sister. I glanced at Gothi and realized that she probably hadn't heard it. So I went over to the door and opened it, only to see my parents standing there. I glanced at Gothi, who had looked up when I opened the door; she nodded, as if to say that they could come in. They did so, and the three of us stood there not sure what to do, especially since we were all worried about Daystrid, or at least I hoped they were.

A while passed and Gothi finally looked up from what she was doing. She grabbed her staff and started scratching in the dirt on her floor. I rushed over to read what it said.

"She says that Days'll be fine," I paused, confused by what Gothi had said next. "She also says that Days doesn't have really any burns, even though she was in the fire."

My parents nodded and turned around to leave. It made sense that they wanted to leave, they didn't care about Daystrid, never had. The strangest thing was that no one knew why. In fact, no one in the tribe even knew she existed apart from my family and the chief, until 5 years ago, that is. She'd always been different, in a way that none of us understood, very similar to Hiccup, I guess.

I looked back at Daystrid laying on the bed. She'd changed in the past 2 months, quite a bit actually. I hadn't noticed it before when I was trying to make sure she was okay.

Her long brown hair was now streaked with an aqua color, similar to the color of her dragon, although she still kept it pulled back into a single braid.

The Next Day

I woke up early, well to tell the truth, I didn't sleep at all that night. I'd gone for a walk, and ended up talking to the chief.

I'd started blaming myself for what had happened to my little sister. I told Hiccup that I had decided that I was going to stay on Berk, and then left the arena before he could say anything. I went straight to Gothi's hut, running right past my parents on my way there.

As Gothi let me in, Daystrid started to stir. I thanked Gothi for letting me in, then looked back at her, only for her to slip unconscious once again.

I sighed, and walked over to her. I was kinda hoping she'd wake up this morning. I thought as I sat down next to her.

"Hey, sis. I don't know if you can hear me, but if you can, I just wanted to tell you that I was going to train more riders to stay on Berk...starting today. And I know you wanted to be a Rider a couple years ago, so..." I trailed off. "The point is, I hope you wake up soon, and then you can be a Rider… if you still want to."

I got up and left, knowing Hiccup would either be looking for me, or waiting for me, so he could give directions on what we were doing that day.

I got to the arena and Hiccup came over to me.

"I know you said that you wanted to stay on Berk, but can I ask why? One dragon wouldn't have made a difference."

"I know. That's why I'm going to stay and train new riders. A backup team for situations just like this," I replied, with a little bit of enthusiasm.

"Ya know..."he trailed off, "That's actually a really good idea..."

"Yeah, but I'm going to be training them. You guys should keep looking for Dagur."

"Yeah, yeah, w-why would you think otherwise?" he said, his hand going to rub the back of his neck.

"Because I know you."

"Okay, fair point," he told me, then turned to the rest of the riders. "Okay, gang. Change of plans, Snotlout, Fishlegs, and the twins are going to go out looking for Dagur. I'll stay here..."

"What part of I'll be doing the training did you not understand?" I asked a bit harshly.

"I-I'm just gonna patrol the island, in case Dagur comes back," he told me, sounding a bit nervous. I knew why he was really staying, he wanted to make sure I was doing okay, since my sister hadn't woken up yet.

A few hours later, I'd started training the new riders. We'd gotten 6 that wanted to ride, Gustav, Sven, Spitelout, Gothi, Bucket, and Mulch. I felt that my sister should be here too, it felt just wrong without her.

Daystrid- Gothi's hut, The Next Day

I woke up in Gothi's hut, and almost didn't recognize it right away. I mean, for starters, there was a purple gronckle curled up in the corner. As far as I had known, Gothi didn't have a dragon. When I asked about it, Gothi explained that my sister was training a backup team for the Riders. She also added that Astrid had come up the day before to tell me if I was awake. I left, smiling, going to find Firewing, to tell him the news before we headed to the Academy, where Gothi had said Astrid was doing the training.

I ran into the forest where I knew he would be, when I felt my hands start to warm up. I looked down, my hands are on fire! It freaked me out to no end. That managed to put the fire out and my hands were fine.

What's going on with me? I know Hiccup can shoot plasma blasts like Toothless' out of his hands, but that's because he's part dragon. I can't be part dragon, can I? I thought, frantically as I stared at my hands, that had no sign of being on fire moments before. Not even my bracers had any scorch marks. I was confused, to say the least.
