That boy was going to end up getting himself killed. First he gets caught using magic in a place that it is illegal on pain of death to use it. Second uses his own magic not only in public but in front of the guards. Last but not least the boy is outright clumsy. It had not been very long since Merlin had taken the boy in and he honestly did not know what to do with the child. He was very small and young. Practically a baby compared to Merlin. Arthur had accepted him as Merlin's apprentice but that does not keep him safe.
It has not been very long since the boy had showed up in Camelot. This was the day Merlin had to make his case to the King to determine what is to be done with the child. Weather it be for better or worse a descision will be made today.
As Merlin woke up to the morning sun, he quickly recalled all he had to do today to keep his new apprentice safe from danger. He made his way into the main area of his tower and noticed the fire had already been lit. Merlin snuck up to the door leading to the modest back room he had supplied the boy and his familiar. When he slowly opened the door looked, he quickly noted the child was gone. Everything in the main area was as it should be, the fire was lit, and his apprentice was nowhere in sight. Assuming the boy had not run off into the night, he must have gotten distracted somewhere in the castle. Merlin would worry about him later. For the moment, he had an important meeting to go to.
Throughout the entire meeting, Merlin listened to the racist comments of the court claiming that magic was a plague and should be eradicated. They saw Merlin as a necessary evil in Camelot and could not understand why they would need another sorceror running around the city. Merlin could not even tell them where he was. He argued and pleaded with his old friend to spare the life of one he saw an innocent. The fact that Hisirdoux acted like a fool did help his case though. No one in court could really see him as a threat.
That did not stop them though from keeping him locked in the meeting room for most of the morning debating the need for a second wizard. When the ignorant people were finally calming down, an emergency had to happen in the forest near by. A creature had attacked some travelling merchants coming in to camelot for their seasonal sales. Merlin was of course called to handle the beast. It was not overly violent or aggressive but it was stubborn. It took up the remaining of the morning for Merlin to solve the problem.
By the time Merlin had started heading back towards his tower. It was well past lunch. He had succeeded in convincing Arthur to approve of the boy but it was more out of convience than any sort of compassion for the supposed orphan. Merlin was getting older and Arthur was worried that other warlocks would attack Camelot if they saw that the city was unprotected. So the boy's life was spared and he was to officially start working with Merlin.
When Merlin returned to his tower and opened the door he froze. The room which had been cleaned and organized that morning was a complete mess. There were dirty bowls discarded near the sink. His materials for drying herbs were scattered across the table and worse of all. There were plants all over the room.
On closer inspection of the room. He saw the bo,,,, he needed to stop referring to him like that and use the name of his apprentice sitting by the window with his familiar and his drying tray pushing it slowly outward. He walked up behind the focused child and asked what he was doing. He watched in facination as the boy pushed the tray too hard and it fell out the window. The three all watched the tray flip until it hit the ground with a crash. There was that clumsy side again.
The child turned and looked the opposite of the great wizard Merlin saw he could be. He was trembling and looking at the ground like it was the most interesting thing in this world. When he did look up for an instant, his eyes danced across the room and he began stuttering. Now Merlin could not have his apprentice stutter. He corrected the behavior and the boy brightened for a moment. He turned and looked at the room again. It appeared as though Hisirdoux had made a meal during the playtime he had for the day. Merlin had let out a sigh at the work he anticipated he would be doing and told the boy to begin cleaning up the mess he had made. Hisirdoux began making his way downstairs to retrieve the tray he had dropped. As Merlin watched him exit the tower into the courtyard below, a messenger came in from the king. He was asking about an ancient relic that was brought in by a peasant that needed immediate attention.
With one last look down, Merlin made his was back to Arthur to study this relic. It was nothing more than a trinket a woman scorned had created. She had attempted to use magic on it but she did not have the gift. Therefore the only thing the relic was is a trinket. It took many hours to convince the court that the woman did not need to be executed by having a worthless pendent. By the time Merlin had made it back into his tower, the sun had long set. Surprisingly when he returned, the room that was a mess was cleaned spotless. The tray had been cleaned and returned to it's place. If it was not for the food still being warmed by the fire, Merlin would never have known another was ever in the room.
Again he crept up the stairs as he did that very morning but this time when he opened the door. He saw a lump on the bed. The child sized bump moved up and down in a slow rhythm. Looks like the boy had long turned in the for the night. He will be needing his rest for his future training. Merlin saw a glimmer of something when Hisirdoux had performed magic in the very heart of Camelot. Even if it took years, he would train the boy until that glimmer was bright as a star.
