Chapter one: The Lies that They Told.
Eleanor's eyes gazed up at the dark ceiling above. The ceiling, being the underneath of the stairs that dwelled in her Aunt and Uncle's house on 4 Privet Drive.
She watched the dust particles float about in the slips of light that creeped through the small door to her and Harry's closet of a bedroom. She liked the small moments of silence she got in the early mornings while everyone else was asleep. It gave her room to pretend she wasn't living the life she was currently living. She glanced over to Harry's sleeping form in the darkness of their closet and frowned. They had gone without supper again last night because of her temper.
Eleanor seldom gave into her emotions, but when they finally bubbled to the surface they were like a sudden storm, violent and powerful. She was quiet most the time and did as she was told. She learned at a very young age crying got you nowhere in this household. Except if you were Dudley, speaking of which, was the reason for last night's outburst. He always was.
Normally it would be Harry in the hot seat, his temper had a short fuse most of the time it would seem. Braver than she, he would speak out about the injustices going on in the house.
Not that he could ever do anything about them. However these outbursts, no matter how small, would often find them going to bed without supper.
The sudden small creaks in the wood above her snapped her out of thoughts. Mrs. Dursley was already awake it would seem. Normally she would have more time in the mornings to herself but being as it was Dudley's 12th birthday, Mrs. Dursley had a lot to prepare for.
After harsh whispers from Petunia for her to get up she found herself in the kitchen baking a cake in the wee hours of the morning. Petunia had warned her that if she messed up a single thing she wouldn't eat for the rest of the day.
They worked in silence which Eleanor was relieved for. Petunia was too busy making sure everything was perfect for her Dudley, too busy to bother her with rude insults like she always did. Not wanting to take any chances for mistakes, she began the steps to making a cake. Secretly rolling her eyes at her Aunt when her back was turned.
She was more underweight for her age as was Harry. Normally, any step out of line was met with a missing meal or two as food was a privilege for her and Harry, not a right. Eleanor had exceptional sneaking skills however, and she would often sneak scraps out of the kitchen along with her brother.
Not soon after, Mr. Dursley joined them downstairs in his usual spot at the table. Eleanor had already fetched his paper and set his coffee down in front of him before he could snap at her. She knew his routines and tried to avoid messing them up.
Slowly, she started the process of starting on the eggs, as the cake baked in the oven, while Mrs. Dursley began mixing pancakes. Not too long after, Harry and Dudley joined them in the kitchen. Harry began helping Eleanor with making breakfast. Dudley seemed to be in a chipper mood, that is until he began to count his presents.
"How many are there?!" Dudley shouted eyes roaming over all the perfectly wrapped packages.
Eleanor glanced over at Harry and he rolled his eyes at Dudley's exclamation, which caused her to smile. She quickly turned back to the stove before any of the Dursley's saw.
"36! I counted them myself!" Mr. Dursley exclaimed proudly.
"36!? That's two less than last year!" Dudley exclaimed in a high pitched voice, his face turning red. Vernon's proud smile quickly turned panicked as he looked to Petunia for help.
"Now now my Duddykins! See that big one over there? You missed one!" She said rushing over to him with a hug.
Dudley suddenly began screaming again, his voice turning shriller as his tantrum went on. Eleanor and Harry went about finishing preparing breakfast, trying their best to ignore him. This wasn't the first tantrum from Dudley that they have witnessed as it was a routine occurrence.
Eleanor listened as Petunia tried to come up with solutions for Dudley's missing presents. At the mention of the zoo trip they were to go on later that day, her excitement grew. She and Harry have never been to the zoo before. Their normal babysitter, Mrs. Flintwood, was down with a cold. The Dursley's couldn't find an alternative babysitter on such short notice, so they were forced to bring them along.
Eleanor had never seen real zoo animals before, only the pictures she saw in the books she read at school. She was particularly excited for the butterfly exhibit she had read about on the pamphlet that now sat crumpled on Dudley's floor in his room.
People could actually go inside a room filled with beautiful flowers while being surrounded by colorful butterflies of all species. She couldn't wait to see it.
Eleanor smiled excitedly at Harry as they loaded themselves in the car later that day, but before they could get in, Vernon slammed the door shut. His face held a scowl when he turned to them, causing Eleanor's anxiety to spike.
"I'm warning you two." He said pointing his chubby finger in their direction. "Any sort of funny business, accidents, anything at all and you won't be eating for a week." He finished as he looked directly at them.
He held their gaze, a couple seconds each. Intimidated by his threat, Eleanor nodded and Harry just returned Vernon's gaze with his own scowl.
They day was going by without a hitch. Dudley would drag all four of them to whatever exhibit would catch his eye next. Harry and Eleanor would follow behind quietly, only whispering to each other when they found something exciting or interesting.
"I think my favorite so far are the lions." Harry said quietly, smiling at his sister. The lions in question were basking in the sun at the moment. Some napping quietly while others groomed each other. Eleanor smiled down at them amazed at their large paws and teeth.
However Dudley was not a fan. "Daddy make them do something!" He exclaimed loudly. Harry frowned at him.
"Do something!" Vernon said while throwing popcorn down into the exhibit.
"Oh nevermind! The lions are lame and boring! Let's go look at the lizards!" Dudley said, pulling Vernon away from the lions.
Eleanor smiled sadly at Harry, an apology of some sorts. Her brother just shrugged in return, frowning at the back of Dudley's head.
As they made their way to the reptile exhibit Eleanor spotted the butterfly garden. Before she could stop herself she suddenly asked, "Can we see the butterflies?" The group paused and looked at her in surprise.
"Butterflies?! Butterflies are stupid and boring!" Dudley said with a smirk. "I could easily small them with my fist!" he said, demonstrating by punching his fist down on his palm with a smack.
Eleanor frowned at him and heart began to sink. "But-" before she could say anything else Petunia grabbed her wrist hard. "This trip isn't for you. You're lucky we even brought you along." She whispered harshly as she pulled her along.
Eleanor tried to stop the tears that began to well up in her eyes. Shoving her emotions down, she stuck her hands in her pockets once Petunia let her go.
"I'm sorry Ellie." Harry said next to her. "I know how much you wanted to see them." He put his arm around her shoulder.
"It's okay.. I can see them when they migrate in the spring.." she said taking one last glance at the butterfly house.
As excited as Dudley was for the replies, his attention quickly turned sour. "They aren't moving! Do something! Make it move!" He shouted at the giant snake behind the glass.
Vernon tapped on the glass and shouted at it. Dudley banged on the glass harder causing it to rattle loudly.
"He's asleep!" Harry suddenly said loudly. Eleanor could tell Harry was annoyed with them.
Dudley rolled his eyes and turned away, "He's boring too." He said with a bored sigh.
As the Dursley's walked away to the next enclosure, Harry and Eleanor stayed behind and studied the snake. Eleanor listened as Harry spoke quietly to the snake. Apologizing for their cousin's rude behavior.
To her astonishment the snake perked his head up and looked directly at them. "Harry do you think he can hear us?" She asked in shock.
The snake suddenly looked in her direction and gave her a nod. Both of their eyes widened.
"Ellie, I think he can understand too!" Harry breathed. The snake nodded again and flicked its tongue at them. Eleanor watched Harry converse with the snake, amazed as he seemed to understand and answer his questions.
As Eleanor was getting ready to ask the snake another question, Dudley suddenly slammed into Harry causing him to tumble over on top of her. She hit the ground hard and hissed in pain as her palms were scraped.
"Daddy look! He's moving!" Dudley yelled with delight, his pudgy face pushed against the glass.
"Are you alright Ellie?" Harry asked as he took her scraped palms in his hands. Eleanor nodded and Harry looked back up to Dudley with pure anger marking his features.
Before anything else could happen, the glass to the snake's enclosure suddenly disappeared, causing Dudley to wobble slightly. Since he was so top heavy, he couldn't regain his balance and toppled over the railing, creating a big splash as he landed in the snake's large water hole.
Harry laughed as Dudley started screaming and all Eleanor could do was gape in surprise. She watched as the snake slithered past her cousin and up over the railing. It made a soft plop as its body descended onto the ground in front of them. Giving both of them a nod, it whispered a simple "Thanksss." Before slithering past them both and on its merry way.
"Anytime." Harry replied to it as Eleanor gave it a nod back. Screams could be heard from the other people visiting the zoo as the snake slithered past them.
She turned to Harry who had the biggest smile she's ever seen and all she could do is gape back at him.
She fought her own smile as Dudley began screaming, causing Petunia to finally notice what all the fuss was about. She screamed in panic as the glass suddenly reappeared, trapping Dudley in the enclosure.
When Mr. Dursley finally found his way to them he scowled down at them, their smiles slowly melting from their faces. He suddenly reached down and grabbed both of their necks, yanking them up. Eleanor made a yelp of surprise when his chubby fingers squeezed tighter around her neck.
"Get back to the car you little brats." He spat at them. He shoved them both to the direction of the exit and they stumbled.
Eleanor didn't think twice and started quickly walking to the car with her hand in Harrys. They didn't utter a word as they made their way out of the reptile building. She kept her head down as she walked, her thoughts racing. This hadn't been the first time something strange like this had happened. However absurd of an event that took place around her and Harry, they were always to blame for it.
Her stomach twisted with anxiety as she thought of the possible punishments that were to befall them once they returned home.
Eleanor was suddenly pulled to a stop as Harry paused, "Ellie look!" He exclaimed. She looked back at him, his head was aimed up to the sky, his other arm was in the air, pointing up. She followed his gaze and gasped.
Dozens of butterflies of all shapes and sizes were in the sky. Beautiful blues, yellows, and oranges. Elegant patterns of all different kinds etched into their wings. She gazed up at them in wonder and before she knew it a great big blue butterfly landed on her arm. It's blue indecent wings sparkled in the sunlight. Before Eleanor could comment, more butterflies began to gently land on her and she giggled with excitement.
She looked over at Harry To see they were landing on him as well. He smiled down at a small orange that was perched on his finger.
"I said get to the car-" Vernon started to exclaim when he came out of the reptile building, only to pause when he saw the commotion they both had caused.
A crowd had gathered around them. Astonished gasps and fingers pointing in their direction. Apparently someone had left the door open to the butterfly exhibit and they all started to flutter out one by one as if on a mission of some sorts.
They both were covered in butterflies before they knew it. Eleanor laughed as a large green and blue speckled butterfly landed on Harry's nose, causing him to go crossed eyed. Her worries fluttered away as she smiled at him. This was by far the best absurd thing to have ever happened to them yet.
That night Eleanor and Harry stayed up together whispering excitedly about today's events. Despite both of their back ends being sore from the lashings they received, she was excited.
"I have a feeling that we aren't as ordinary as Aunty and Uncle say we are." She said with a smile. Harry quirked an eyebrow at her so she explained further. "Think about it Harry, all the strange things that happen, only happen when we are around."
"Every time I get angry something always explodes. And today when you got shoved, a whole wall of glass disappears?!" She exclaimed quietly. "It's like the universe is on our side!" Harry frowned and looked away from her.
"Oh come on Harry! What is it? You know I'm right!" She said gently, shaking him. A moment passed before he answered her, his voice solemn, "Even if that's true we are still stuck here." He turned over and sat his glasses on the wooden support beam above them, a sign that he was done talking and wanted to go to sleep.
Eleanor signed as she settled in bed next to him, her smile and excitement slowly fading. Harry was right of course. No matter how unordinary they both were, it didn't seem to matter. They were both stuck in this closet, having to live under the monsters who called themselves the Dursley's.
Eleanor's thoughts suddenly turned to her dead parents. She wondered how they would react to all this. She liked to imagine them storming in with anger and taking her and Harry away from this horrible place.
All she knew about them was that they had died in a car crash long ago. Remembering this, her hand found its way to the scar on her upper lip. Her and Harry were the only survivors in that crash, both of them leaving with scars forever reminding them of their deaths.
That night she dreamed of her mother's smile and a memory of her small hand grasping her fathers black sleeve. Here and there she would remember small fragments of them, never really being able to piece them together.
Since yesterday's incident happened, Eleanor found herself sitting next to Harry at the dining room table the next morning. They had to suffer in silence as they both watched the Dursley's devour breakfast. Her stomach began to protest and she wrapped her arms around her stomach to try to make it stop. Finally, Mr. Dursley interrupted the silence. "Dudley, go fetch the mail for me."
"Make one of them go get it!" Dudley exclaimed loudly.
Vernon turned towards Harry, raising his eyebrows. "Well boy? Don't just sit there!" He snapped.
As Harry got up to go get the mail, Eleanor returned her eyes to Dudley's breakfast. A fat stack of pancakes sat on his plate and she watched as he shoved them in his mouth.
When Harry returned she noted his focus was on two letters, different from the others. He absentmindedly handed Vernon the rest of the mail and sat down. "Look." Harry said quietly.
In his hand were two letters and to her astonishment they were addressed to her and Harry. She carefully took hers from his hands and read the front.
MISS ELEANOR R POTTER
The Cupboard under the stairs.
4 Privet Drive
Little Whinging
Surrey
Eleanor nor Harry had ever received mail before. The fact that whomever sent the letter addressed it as 'The cupboard under the stairs' was very curious. This meant that whoever this person was, they knew of the harsh treatment her and Harry received. 'Very cheeky of them...' she thought to herself with a smile.
Before she even had time to open it, Dudley ripped both of their letters out of their hands. "Dad, look Harry and Eleanor got letters!" He shouted. Vernon looked up in surprise.
"Give that back! Those are ours!" Harry said angrily.
Vernon sneered at Harry, "And just who would want to send you two a letter-" his face suddenly dropped and the color drained from it as he eyed the wax seal on the back of the letter.
"Out! All of you!" He snapped angrily all of a sudden. All three children got up quickly, not wanting to further anger him. Dudleys face looked frightened as he followed his cousins out the kitchen door.
Once the kitchen door was shut, all three of them fought and struggled over each other trying to look into the keyhole of the door. Harry ended up winning and that left the crack on the bottom of the door.
"Move it scar face!" Dudley whispered harshly as he shoved her head back. Eleanor signed in frustration and resigned to putting her ear against the door.
She could make out her Aunt and Uncles rushed whispers. "They will not be going! I don't care, I will not have those idiots teaching them horrible things! Not in my house!" Vernon whispered harshly.
"But Vernon, they know about the cupboard, they could be spying on us!" Petunia replied, her voice shook with fright.
"We can move them to the spare bedroom but that's it. We will not be replying to them!" He said.
Eleanor could make out the sounds of paper ripping and she realized with horror that he had ripped up both of their letters. She got up and swung open the door causing Harry to fall forward onto the kitchen floor.
"Those were not yours!" She screamed in anger as she watched the shredded paper flutter to the ground. Her aunt and uncle looked up at her in surprise.
"How dare you!" Petunia said in shock.
Anger bubbled up inside her, she clenched her fists to her side and suddenly the energy in the room changed.
"It was a mistake! Those letters weren't meant to be addressed to you-" Vernon stopped short as Eleanor stomped her foot hard causing the kitchen to rattle.
"LIAR!" She screamed. Suddenly there was a sizzle of what felt like electricity in the room and the vase that held Mrs. Dursley's roses from the garden shattered.
Dudley shouted in surprise and ran into the hall. Eleanor flinched in shock as the pieces scattered all over the kitchen. She looked at her Aunt and Uncle who held each other.
Vernon looked at her in shock before anger took over his features. "Both of you! Go upstairs to Dudley's second bedroom!" He said.
Harry and her looked at him in shock for a split second. "GO!" He shouted, teeth clenched. They both turned on their heels and scurried up the stairs.
The following week felt like a rollercoaster ride. Eleanor and Harry were moved upstairs to Dudley's second bedroom despite the tantrum that followed. Normally Dudley's tantrums got him exactly what he wanted but to Eleanor's surprise, not this time.
More letters arrived for her and Harry. The same green ink twinkled at them, this time the location being "The smallest bedroom in the house."
But just as he did to the last ones, Vernon ended up shredding them and tossing the pieces into the garbage.
Eleanor started noticing owls hanging around only their house anytime she went outside. They would screech at her and Harry. Some of them carried more letters tied to one of their legs. They began stuffing them in their open windows. Under the front door. Some even dropped them in the rose bushes out back. No matter how many times Vernon would shoo them away, they would come back bringing even more owls with them.
Every day more and more letters arrived. And every day Vernon would rip them up or burn them in the fireplace while muttering hateful words she couldn't make out.
No matter how hard her and Harry tried to get at least one letter, Vernon was always there to stop them. He started taking days off of work to nail the mailbox and windows shut. Whoever these people were they were determined to get these letters to her and Harry. Unfortunately that just sparked up Vernon's determination to stop them.
Eleanor hoped it was her parents trying to reach them. That the Dursley's made a mistake and her mom and dad had survived the crash. Maybe they lost their memories and only now just remembered.
"But why would they keep us from them? If we are such a burden on them, why would they just give us back to them?" Harry had said.
Eleanor hated this logic Harry gave her. He was right and it wasn't fair. If the universe seemed to always be on their side then why were they still with the Dursley's if her parents truly were still alive.
She was snapped out of these thoughts one morning when Vernon spoke, "Fine day, Sundays!" He said happily as he sat in his usual chair by the fireplace. "In my opinion, best day of the week! Why is that Dudley?" He asked, turning to his son.
Dudley looked up at him with confusion.
"Because there's no post on Sundays?" Harry said flatly, serving him the plate of biscuits to go with his tea.
Eleanor rolled her eyes at Vernon as his grubby hands took one from the plate. "Right you are Harry!" Vernon said with mock approval. "No post on Sundays! Ha!" He said mockingly to no one.
A sudden flutter by the window caught Eleanor and Harry's attention. She suddenly smiled to herself, she could spot owls out the window perched in various places through the sheer curtains. Something big was about to happen.
Her and Harry crept up to the window as Vernon went on, "No post today! No bloody letters!"
All the owls turned to look at them when Harry pulled back the curtain so they could peer through the window. Hundreds of owls were perched outside in their yard. Some on the fence near the end of their yard, others on the power line.
A sudden sound of paper smacking against something caused Vernon to abruptly stop his ramblings. They both turned to see a letter on the floor. Before anyone could react the house began to rumble. Energy sparked in the air around them. Suddenly thousands of letters began spilling out the fireplace like a tidal wave. Petunia grabbed Dudley who began to scream in panic. Vernon struggled to get up, his fat face turning red with rage.
Harry began jumping around laughing, attempting to catch a letter in the air. Eleanor watched in amazement as the whole room began to be buried with letters. And it didn't look like it was stopping anytime soon.
Seeing Harry suddenly bolt from the room she bent down and grabbed a letter before running after him. Vernon shouted out behind them and began to follow.
"Run Harry!" She yelled. Before she could follow any further Vernon yanked her back causing her to fall to the floor behind him. She watched in horror as he fought with Harry in the front hall, struggling to rip the letter out of his hands.
"They're our letters!" Harry screamed as he struggled against Vernon.
Eleanor got to her feet and began pounding her small fists against Vernon's back. "Let go of him!" She wailed.
Letters continued to rain down on them. "That's it!" Vernon exclaimed. "We are going away! Far away where they can't find us!"
The next couple of days went by in a blur. Hotel after hotel they went but to no avail the letters would always find them. They would either be waiting for them at the front desk when Vernon would check them in, or already be waiting in their rooms.
Eleanor found herself next to Harry on a dirty concrete floor. Vernon had found a small cabin on a very small island. She could hear a storm rage outside, lightning would eliminate the room every so often. She watched as Harry drew a birthday cake in the dirt on the floor with his finger.
"Ready to blow out the candles?" He whispered. It would be their 11th birthday soon.
Harry was trying to make her feel better. She was sad that the letters had finally stopped coming it seemed. Frustrated with her Aunt and Uncle for keeping them in the dark, she kept quiet for the whole day, not even speaking to Harry.
Eleanor rolled her eyes at Harry and took in a big breath, together they blew out the dirt candles he had made. She squeezed her eyes shut, wishing for someone to come take them away To a better place.
A sudden large bang at the door made her and her brother jump. Dudley shot up into a sitting position from the couch he was sleeping on next to them.
More loud bangs rattled the front door against its lock causing the dust to scatter off it. Harry jumped up dragging his sister up with him.
Someone was at the front door trying to get in. Eleanor's heart raced as Harry led her in the corner of the room. They both pressed their bodies up against the stone wall, trying to hide.
Mr. and Mrs. Dursley suddenly appeared on the staircase. Vernon struggled to keep an old shotgun steady as he aimed it at the entrance to the cabin.
The door suddenly burst open off its hinges and slammed to the floor causing everyone to jump.
Eleanor watched in fear as a giant man wearing a large trench coat bent down to avoid the door frame as he stepped inside. "Sorry bout that!" The giant simply said, while tucking an enormous pink umbrella into his coat.
He turned and bent over, grabbing the old wooden door off the floor and jammed it back into its hinges.
She squeezed Harry's hand tighter as she witnessed the large man bend the shot gun her uncle held after his feeble attempts at demanding that the intruder leave at once.
"Dry up Dursley, you great prune. " he exclaimed simply. The shot gun went off, lodging a bullet in the ceiling and causing everyone, except the giant man, to jump.
The man turned to Dudley suddenly, who stood against the wall. "Boy I 'aven't seen you since you were a wee baby 'arry!" He exclaimed with an excited smile. "Yer a bit further along than I expected, particularly righ in the middle!" He said, patting his stomach with a chuckle.
Dudley stuttered over his response and before Eleanor could stop him Harry came out of their hiding spot, leaving her behind.
"I'm Harry." He said bravely.
The giant turned towards her brother with a smile. "Well ov course you ar!" He looked around the room suddenly. "Now where is that sister of yers 'arry." He said.
Eleanor pressed her body further into the stones behind her as Harry turned and looked into the direction she was. She internally cursed at him for giving her away. She wished she was as brave as her brother.
The giant man stepped around the corner peering down at her and her eyes widened. He had a giant brown beard that was just as messy as his long hair. However His eyes were kind, she noted.
"No need to be frightened Eleanor! You can come on out!" He said with a smile.
Glancing at Harry who gave her a nod she peeled herself away from the safety of her hiding spot and quickly scurried over to him.
"My, Ellie you look just like yer mother!" The man said, pure joy reaching his large features as he looked down at her causing her cheeks to burn.
"I got somethin fer you two!" He said reaching around to his back pocket. "Fraid I migh have sat on it at one point." He said apologetically while bringing out a frumpled box.
Harry took it from him and inside they found a pink cake with the words 'Happee Birthday Harry and Ellie' written in green frosting.
"Baked it myself, words and all!" The man proudly exclaimed.
"Thank you!" Harry said smiling up at him. Eleanor gave her own small smile at the man in thanks, still too nervous to speak.
She watched as the giant sat down on the couch, bringing out his pink umbrella, he pointed it at the fireplace.
Both her and Harry's jaws dropped when two bolts of fire popped out of the umbrellas tip, lighting the fireplace.
"Excuse me," Harry spoke quietly while putting the cake down on the table next to them. "But who are you?"
"Rubeus Hagrid! Keeper of keys and grounds at Hogwarts!" He said as he stirred the logs on the fire. "Of course you two know all bout Hogwarts!" Hagrid said eyeing them both. Eleanor frowned as Harry explained to him that they had never heard of the place.
"Blimey! Didn't you two ever wonder where yer mum and dad learned it all?" He said, raising his eyebrows. Harry gave Eleanor a puzzled expression before returning his gaze back to Hagrid.
"Learn what?" He asked.
Hagrid leaned in closer to them with a twinkle in his eye. "Yer a wizard Harry. And Eleanor yer a witch!" He said turning to her.
Suddenly everything clicked into place in her mind. All the moments of odd happening that seemed to surround them constantly. Things exploding or breaking when she or Harry lost their temper. The mystery surrounding her parents and why the Dursley's never wanted to answer any questions about them. Anger bubbled in her mind as she suddenly realized her aunt and uncle might have lied to them about their deaths.
"You lied to us!" Her small voice suddenly burst out, interrupting Hagrid. All eyes fell on her as she glared at Vernon and Petunia. "Our parents didn't die in a car crash did they!?" She asked angrily, frowning at them.
"A car crash!? A car crash kill Lily and James Potter?! It's an outrage! A scandal!" Hagrid suddenly shouted, sanding up.
Eleanor's ears rang with anger as she listened to her aunt spit hateful words about her parents as she explained the reason for all the lies. About how all her family could ever talk about was Lily being a witch. That is was unnatural and weird, earning her mother and father getting blown up in the end.
"So you knew this whole time!?" Harry shouted angrily, finally catching on.
"Of course we did! We would never let retched magic in our house when we took you in!" Vernon exclaimed.
With tears threatening to spill, Eleanor turned to Hagrid, ignoring her uncle. "Are you the one who's been sending all those letters?" She asked.
At the mention of the letters Hagrid jumped slightly, suddenly remembering them. "Ah! These be fer you two!" He said as he reached in his coat again and pulled out two letters.
Eleanor reached for them, determined to finally read them this time. She gave Harry his and tore hers open.

Eleanor gasped as Vernon suddenly ripped the letter from her hands. "They will not be going! I will now allow it!" He shouted.
"And just how do you think yer gonna stop them? Muggle." Hagrid said in a threatening tone as he puffed out his chest.
He suddenly whipped out his umbrella and pointed it towards Dudley, who was currently stuffing his face with the cake he had brought them earlier. A whizzing sound suddenly came from the umbrellas tip and with pop, a pig's tail suddenly sprouted from her cousins backside.
Harry laughed as the Dursley's screamed at the sight of Dudley's new tail. While they were busy chasing him around Hagrid winked down at Eleanor. "Best not tell anyone bout that." He said sheepishly. She nodded, finally smiling at him for the first time that night.
As Hagrid promised, he was there the next day to take Eleanor and Harry to get their supplies they needed for school. She had read the list last night and was puzzled at where they were going to find the items that it listed, for she had never heard of any of them before. And more importantly, she was concerned about how they were going to be able to afford all of this.
Hagrid wound up taking them to a pub by the name of the Leaky Cauldron. The outside of the building stuck out like a sore thumb compared to its neighbors. The pub was all black, even the windows were covered.
Eleanor wondered if Hagrid had the wrong address. This building looked abandoned. Before she could question him though, the dark sign that hung on the outside slowly changed as they got closer to it. The picture of a cauldron became much clearer.
The atmosphere inside however, was warm and welcoming. As the bartender greeted Hagrid, Eleanor looked about the room. Large wooden beams and cream colored walls were illuminated by hundreds of candles that sat atop giant wood chandeliers. Laughter and low conversations could be heard over some merry music that was playing.
Eleanor noted there a lot of people scattered out in various places. They were all dressed oddly, some in weird robes with bright colors. Others had hats on, styles she had never seen before.
Her attention was suddenly brought to the bartender at the change of tone in his voice. "Bless my soul..." he muttered in disbelief. "It's the Potters!"
Before Eleanor could blink, the room became much more quiet. Everyone had turned to look at them, ceasing their conversations. Even the music had stopped. Eleanor was startled, she didn't like being the center of attention and she could feel her cheeks turn red as she stepped closer to Harry and Hagrid.
"Welcome back Potters!" A man suddenly said. He jumped up and shook both their hands.
This made everyone in the room jump up with commotion. A line started as people began taking turns to shake both of Harry and Eleanor's hands. People introduced themselves in excitement, and many were in complete surprise that they had the opportunity to meet them.
One women even kissed both of their hands while thanking them profusely. Eleanor peeked a glance at Harry, who seemed just as confused as she was.
Finally, the crowd seemed to disperse and settle as they finally made their way closer to the bar. A man wearing a purple turban stood up nervously, his wide eyes locked on them.
"Harry a-and Eleanor P-Potter!" He stuttered out nervously. "C-Cant tell you how p-pleased I am to meet you both!" He finally finished.
Eleanor noted that he was the only one who didn't shake their hands, instead he held his close to his body, nervously fiddling with his fingers.
"Professor! I didn't see you ther!" Hagrid suddenly exclaimed. "Harry, Eleanor, this is Professor Quirrell. He'll be yer defense against the dark arts teacher at Hogwarts." He said, introducing the professor to them. The man smiled nervously at them both.
Harry, being the polite one, stuck out his hand to the Professor to shake his hand. "Nice to meet you." He said.
However Quirrell shrunk back slightly while looking at Harry's stretched out arm. "F-fearfully fascinating subject. Not that you n-need it ey P-potters?" He stuttered smiling nervously at Harry.
He looked over at Eleanor who gave a tight lip smile. This man made her uneasy for some reason, maybe it was his nervous nature.
Harry awkwardly smiled at the professor as Hagrid said their goodbyes. Eleanor kept her gaze on Quirrell who seemed to fidget more as he caught her eyes on him.
For being the defense against the dark arts teacher, he seemed like such a flighty man. And what did he mean by Harry and Eleanor not needing to know the subject? Something odd was going on, Eleanor knew that much. Why did everyone seem to know who they were and why did people keep thanking them?
She guessed it must have been something to do with their parents. Before she could question further she snapped back her attention to the brick wall that Hagrid brought them too. It suddenly began to open, the sound of scraping stone met her ears as the bricks shuffled out of their way, making a doorway.
They stepped though and Eleanor couldn't believe her eyes. Different shops of all shapes, colors, and sizes lined the street. People bussled around buying, selling, or going about their business. She spotted children surrounding a candy cart full of odd treats she had never seen before.
There were various sized signs outside each shop, listing what they were selling inside. Wands, potions and spells, magical creatures, and even the latest fashions for witch or wizard.
Both Eleanor and Harry were lost in their own thoughts, smiles on their faces as they took in their surroundings. "Welcome to Diagon Alley!" Hagrid announced. Hagrid began pointing out the different shops where they would be getting their supplies from.
"But Hagrid, how are me and my sister going to pay for all this?" Harry questioned glancing at Eleanor with a worried look. "We haven't got any money."
"Well of course you do! It's at Gringotts wizarding bank! Aint no safer place! Well except Hogwarts of course!" Hagrid said pointing ahead.
Hagrid led them to the giant building made of white marble decorated with gold accents. The building seemed to loom over everything else, the top being slightly crooked. 'GRINGOTTS BANK' was plastered on the outside above the door.
Eleanor listened as Hagrid explained that the bank was run by goblins. He warned them not to make them mad for they weren't a race to be messed with. Eleanor gulped as he said this and followed behind Hagrid a little closer as they found their way into the entrance.
Eleanor's mouth hung open as she marveled at how extravagant it was inside. Beautiful brown marble lined the walls and ceiling. More gold accents held everything together. A giant crystal chandelier was hung in the center of the room.
High tables lined the edges of the wall where she could spot small creatures in suits counting coins or writing on parchment. They had sharp ears and long fingers. She looked away quickly as one of them caught her staring, his beady dark eyes frowning at her. She almost squeaked as it sneered at her, revealing a set of sharp teeth.
Once Hagrid checked them in at the front desk and gave the goblin the key that he had that belonged to their vault, another goblin by the name of Gornuk led them to what looked like a mining cart that sat upon some tracks.
Eleanor and Harry quickly filed in and sat down. The ride was fun at first leading them through cave passageways, but when they rounded a corner and the floor dropped away from them revealing a giant cavern, Eleanor gasped in fright.
She couldn't even see the bottom as the cart whisked them away on the old tracks suspended in the air. She grabbed Harry's hand tightly and kept her focus on her breathing, her eyes glued to her feet. She had a fear of heights. Harry patted the hand she used to hold his as a means to comfort her.
Before she knew it, Gornuk had led them to a vault. Hagrid stuck the key in the vault unlocking it with a dull loud clunk. When the heavy door was opened, all she could spy was stacks upon stacks of gold coins.
"Is-is this all ours?" She questioned in shock.
"You didn't think yer parents left you with nothing didchya?" Hagrid said chuckling.
The fact that her parents left them all this money warmed her heart. They must have cared so much for them and wanted to make sure they lived a comfortable life. Too bad they go stuck with the Dursleys she thought to herself.
Harry looked at her with wide eyes before grabbing a handful of coins, as Hagrid asked. He gave them both small leather pouches to carry the coins in. "That should be enough to last you through the school term." He said nodding as they finished filling the small pouches.
On their way to the next vault Hagrid needed, he explained how the currency worked in the wizard world to make sure they knew how to buy things.
The cart made its way deeper and deeper in the cave. As they passed different vaults the doors became more entricate than the next.
To her surprise the only thing that Hagrid needed in the vault was a very small object wrapped in brown paper and tied with string. He quickly shoved it deep in his trench coat and patted the outside. "Official Hogwarts business." He said with a serious look.
"Dumbledore asked me to retrieve it. You wouldn't believe me if I told you what it was." He said with a final nod.
Their next stop Hagrid took them to was a purple shop called 'Madam Malkins Robes for all Occasions.' Eleanor was fitted for a robe by a very kind short squat woman with grey hair all pulled up into a tidy bun.
The woman joyously explained to her about each of the Hogwarts houses. Telling her the robes were charmed to change to the colors of the correct house once the first years went through the sorting ceremony.
Eleanor smiled when Madam Malkins told her about her memory of the time when her mother had been fitted for her own robes.
As she waited for her brother to be fitted for his robes she sat down on the window bench near the front of the shop. Her fingers absentmindedly fiddled with the purple velvet buttons the bench had as she gazed out the window.
Eleanor soaked her environment in, smiling to herself as she observed all the people walking about outside. She couldn't believe that this was her life now. Her and Harry were unordinary in all the best ways, just as she had thought.
She looked up to the sky as she thought of her parents and felt as if they were watching them. This feeling gave her comfort.
A young boy stood on the sidewalk, hands in his coat pockets as he looked through the window of a book shop. His eyes glazed over in boredom. He was waiting for his mother and father to be done with their shopping and decided to wait outside not wanting to spend anymore time in the stuffy place.
It was going to be his first year at Hogwarts. He had been waiting for the day he would get to go shopping for all his supplies, but now that he was finished he just wanted to go home already. He turned away from the window and leaned against it with a sigh.
His platinum blonde hair and fancy clothes made him stick out like a sore thumb and he made faces at the stares from witches and wizards as they passed.
Suddenly his eyes were drawn to the shop that was across the street. A young girl about his age, sat in the shop's window. She had a dreamy look on her face as she watched the people go by.
He thought she was very pretty; her dark hair fell around her cheeks in messy ringlets making her skin seem even paler than it was. He noted that she had blue eyes and they seemed to light up as she caught sight of a street cat that weaved in and around people as they bustled about.
The boy's heart sped up when her blue eyes suddenly locked on his own. He had been caught staring at her and he looked away suddenly frowning . He could feel his cheeks heat up and he frowned, willing the redness to go away.
After a couple moments he sneaked a glance at her again. Much to his surprise she was still staring at him. She offered a kind small smile and raised her hand and waved shyly at him. He hesitated before slowly reaching his hand up and waved back at her, the corner of his mouth turned up a bit.
"Draco, come along dear." His mother suddenly said, making him jump.
He turned to see his mother and father waiting for him, they had just exited the book shop. He quickly followed them. As they left he turned his head back to the shop the girl had been sitting in, but the window was empty.
And there we have it! First chapter done! I hope you all like Eleanor's character so far! Have any ideas at which house she will be sorted into? Please leave a review with your guess and any other thoughts on the chapter!
Also, I have fixed all the grammar mistakes in the prologue. I had uploaded the wrong one that had all the mistakes before I edited.
Anyways! Off to writing the second chapter! :)
