Chapter 2
During the whole sleepover, Melissa did her best not to think about that man; instead, she placed a smile on her face and made a necklace. In the center of the necklace, she put a star that was almost like the one that the Israelites would sometimes wear. While Melissa didn't know much about where she came from, her parents did promise that one day they would take her there. As Melissa looked around, she saw Chrissy, Rachel, Amanda and Becca smiling and looking at their bracelets and necklaces as they finished them.
"I am giving my mom this necklace for her birthday, it's in a couple of days I hope that she will like it."
Rachel said in a low tone that sounded like she doubted her work, she started to look at it like she wanted to redo the whole thing. Melissa didn't know what to tell her, she knew that Rachel was one of those kids that wanted to make sure everything was perfect.
Melissa was about to tell Rachel that the necklace looked good when without warning a pillow hit her in the face. Causing her to fall back onto the floor and for a moment she lay there in shock, but as soon as Melissa saw it was Chrissy that hit her.
"Oh Chrissy, I am so going to make you pay for that,"
Melissa said in a playful voice as she looked around. It didn't take her long to find a pillow lying beside her so she quickly grabbed it, then hit Chrissy on the left shoulder causing all the girls to laugh and join in.
As the pillow fight continued for the next hour, Melissa forgot all about the strange man at the front of the school. Instead, Melissa laughed and smiled as she had fun at the sleepover while wishing that it would never come to an end. Their fun soon came to an end when Chrissy's mother came in with a stern look on her face, the first thing Melissa noticed was the crossed arms.
"Girls it is almost ten o clock, clean up this mess and get yourselves to bed."
All of the girls let out loud groans at the woman as they started to put away the beads and string they use to make their necklaces and bracelets. Seeing that the girls were cleaning up Chrissy's mother walked out of the room, closing the door and walking downstairs to watch tv.
Once Melissa and the girls no longer heard the petite mother's footsteps, Rachel jumped back onto the bed and grabbed a pillow. She then struck Melissa on her right side, letting out a loud laugh she then spoke not so loud that Chrissy's mother would hear them.
"I don't know about your girls, but there is no way I am ready to go to bed. So how about instead, we have a nice quiet pillow fight until we are good and ready to go to bed."
At first, Chrissy and Melissa looked at one another, trying to decide if they should do as they are told or if they should continue having their fun. Before they could decide Rachel whacked them both in the head with a purple pillow and restarted the pillow fight that had ended only moments ago. It didn't take long for all after they were hit, that all the girls piled back onto the bed and started to swing their pillows around.
All the girls including Melissa were laughing as the pillow fight resumed, unfortunately not five minutes after it started Chrissy's mother came strolling in.
"I told you, girls, to go to bed, now I have to stand here until you do as you're told." When her mother spoke her tone was very stern and angry, she also crossed her arms which made the girls quiet down.
It was Melissa who was the first one to slip off the bed, before making her way to her purple sleeping bag in the middle of the floor. Soon after the others followed her lead, and slowly started to settle themselves in their sleeping bags and went off to sleep. Once saw that they all were finally asleep, she slowly walked out of the door and headed to bed after a long day of dealing with little hyper girls.
The next morning, Melissa woke up around six am feeling sick to her stomach, she slowly crawled out of her bed and made her way downstairs to the kitchen. As she entered Melissa saw that was already awake and drinking what she had to guess was coffee at the breakfast nook. got up from where she was sitting and walked over to Melissa, with a worried look on her face once she was standing in front of her she bent down and asked.
"Melissa, is everything alright dear?"
Melissa shook her head to the question, afraid that if she said something that her dinner from the night before might end up on her friend's mother. Seeing her response 's first reaction was to place the back of her wrist onto Melissa's forehead, as soon as she did she quickly took it off.
"Ohh sweetheart you're burning up, I'm going to take you home and we will bring your stuff over later ok?" 's voice was very calm, she left the room and grabbed a blanket before placing it over Melissa's shoulder.
When they walked out of the house and onto the street, they found that there was no one in sight. The street was completely deserted. While walking to Melissa's house, had to keep a good hold on the young girl to stop her from falling over. Though they had to stop three times so that she could empty her stomach, which wasn't a pretty sight there were a couple of times Melissa almost passed out. What seemed like forever to Melissa they finally arrived at her place, she took out her house key knowing her parents wouldn't be up yet.
Melissa placed her key in the unlocked it and slowly opened the door, while at the same time trying to make any noise that might wake her parents up. She took a step inside and right away she knew that there was something wrong, she turned her head to the right in the direction of the living room. As Melissa did, that was when she saw her mother and father sitting on the couch with a large pool of blood under them. Melissa screamed with tears running down her face, then her head started spinning and she remembered there was one more person in the house.
Before she could even turn towards the stairs, Melissa felt a wave of dizziness hit her, she was about to fall when she felt an arm stop her. As Melissa looked up when she saw that it was , who had once again made sure she didn't faceplant on the carpet.
"Thanks, Mrs…." Melissa's voice was very weak and strained, and before she could've said anything else she started to feel a nauseous feeling rising in her throat.
"Melissa? Are you alright?"
's voice was very low, but even though Melissa heard what her friend's mother was asking she was unable to respond. Instead, she shook her head, trying hard to hold and for a moment she thought she might have won. But as soon as she felt the strong slowly lift away, Melissa's legs gave out, and she fell to her knees and started to throw up.
As soon as it started was running her hand up and down Melissa's back. Once it was over she sat back up wiping her mouth panting loudly. Her friend's mother let out a loud sigh looking around for someone to help, seeing no one she spoke in a low tone. "I have to run next door to call the police, I want you to stay here until I get back."
Melissa didn't say another to her friend's mother, she didn't even want to shake her head in fear she might be sick again. So that the mother knew that Melissa understood what she had just said, she raised her right hand and shook it up and down. gave the little girl a sad smile, as she patted her on the head and made her way across the street and knocked on the door. The woman stood there for the longest time until an older man opened the door, Melissa saw them looking back at her.
Melissa sat there for she had no idea how long, doing her best to not make any sudden movements would cause her to puke. She was so busy focusing on not throw up that she didn't notice that had already returned, was sitting beside Melissa trying to comfort her. Not more than five minutes the sound of sirens would be heard coming down the street, even though Melissa knew she should take comfort in hearing them she didn't. In her mind, she knew that them being here would not bring back her family all it meant was Melissa would be looking over her shoulder until the man who took her family was caught.
When the police stopped in front of the house and the sound of the car doors opening and closing reached Melissa's ears she didn't lookup.
Instead, Melissa just kept her eye on the ground but watched as 's shoes walked past her and she went over to where the Police were standing. "Hello Officer, I'm Tressa Wyatt." 's voice was very soft and you could hear how hard she was trying to hold back the tears, before continuing she looked back and saw Melissa had tears running down her cheek. "I'm a friend of the family, their daughter Melissa over there was sleeping over at my house "after my daughter invited her over for a slumber party."
Officer Johnson nodded his head and started to take notes in a small notepad that he took out from the right side of his belt. "Alright, can you tell me why you brought the girl home so early in the morning? The officer asked in a normal questioning tone while keeping an eye on both and Melissa, who were still sooking up by what they found in the house.
"I was up around seven making coffee for my husband who works very early in the morning, once he was gone Melissa came down saying she wasn't feeling well." Before she went on with what she was going to say, looked back at Melissa seeing the poor girl was completely out of it so she turned back to the officer making her voice very low. "Being a parent I didn't feel right letting her walk home all alone, so I decided to make sure she got there safely and that's when we find her family."
Officer Johnson nodded his head and was finishing up writing what she had just told him when the homicide detective drove up to the scene.
Without saying a word Officer Johnson walked away from and Melissa and walked towards the detective.
"Detective Charlies, I took a statement from one of the people that found the body, the other witness is the daughter of the victims." Officer Johnson paused as he gave Detective Charles a rundown on what he did when he got to the scene, though he didn't look too happy he kept giving his report. "According to , Melissa Summers woke up shortly after seven this morning saying she wasn't feeling feel. To make sure that she got there alright, the mother of the girl's friend walked her home and that's when they found the bodies."
Once Officer Johnson was done giving his report, Detective Charlies nodded his head, before allowing his eyes to move towards the little girl. Seeing her caused him to be angry that someone so cruel, would make such a sweet-looking little girl an orphan for no reason. "Officer I want you to take Melissa to the hospital to have a doctor to check her out, once the doctor gives them the clear take her to the station." He spoke in a very serious tone and kept that tone as he added one more thing before walking away. "You are not to leave her side, there a chance the killer might try and kill her to make sure he wiped out the whole family."
Officer Johnson nodded his head walked over to the little girl, said something to before leading Melissa to his car. Once Johnson had Melissa safely in the car and drove away, Charlies turned towards the house getting himself mentally prepared for what he was about to see. Not knowing that not too far away, a man was watching the whole thing cursing that he had missed the little girl and knew it was too late to get to her now. Once the man was sure that there was no one watching him, he slowly moved away from the house and started to think about what he was going to do next.
