Chapter 2: Emi Sendou's Heart
Emi Sendou sat in her brother's room silently. Her eyes scanned over the well kept area, looking for Aichi. Shaking her head, Emi chuckled a bit, her voice void of any humor. Her brother will be home soon, he's just spending some extra time with his club or playing Vanguard at Card Capital. Aichi will come home...her brother would never leave them.
At least, that's what she kept telling herself.
It's been a week since that horrific day plagued the entire world. News stations from across the globe counted for at least half of the population on earth had disappeared without a trace. She remembers the look on her mother's face vividly as she walked through the door of Sendou Household. The tear stained face of her mother forever etched in her brain for the rest of her life. The way Shizuka Sendou was frantically screaming Aichi's name as she held her youngest child in her arms for dear life as if that child would also vanish from her life.
Shizuka Sendou hasn't left her room since that Godforsaken day.
Emi remembers seeing Toshiki Kai sitting at their dining table that day, with a solemn look stitched onto his normally straight face. His eyes bore into her dark blue ones and she's sure he would've broken down into tears if he had any left. Emi eyed the card in his hands as the usually calm Cardfighter approached her. He placed the card face down in her hands, and she turned it over, confused by the action. Until her eyes widened in shock at the face of the card.
"Blaster Blade?" Emi spoke. She looked back up to Kai, to find remorse and guilt written all over his face. His next words stabbed through her heart like a cold blade.
"Aichi...Aichi's gone...I'm sorry."
Tears fall endlessly from her face, spilling onto Blaster Blade. A tear falls onto Blaster Blade's face, sliding down the card as if to represent the unit's grief.
Emi Sendou hasn't smiled once since that disgusting day. The usual light in her eyes was long dead, and filled with a vast void of emptiness.
Knock Knock!
Emi turned to the door at the sound of knocking to find her clubmate, Rekka Tatsunagi standing at the doorway. "We need to talk," Rekka said.
"How did you get inside?" Emi asked, instead.
"You left your door unlocked," Rekka answered. She walked over to Emi and hugged her tightly. "I'm so sorry," Rekka apologized for Emi's pain. The younger sibling pushed Rekka off of her being. She refused to cry in Rekka's presence.
She was all out of tears anyway.
"What do you want? I'm busy right now, Rekka," Emi asked, roughly. Rekka flinched a bit, not used to Emi's rough voice. The youngest idol hesitated a bit before talking to one of her best friends. "I talked to Mai, recently. She lost her mother."
"Oh."
"Why do you sound surprised?" Rekka asked, confused. Emi didn't answer, and allowed her eyes to burn holes into the floor. Rekka's face turned from one of pity to one of concern. "Emi...how long have you been in this room? When was the last time you left this room?" Rekka pressed the Bermuda user.
"I don't know."
"Have you eaten anything at all?" Rekka asked. Emi shook her head "no" and that was all the confirmation Rekka needed to drag Emi out of the room. Emi didn't have the strength to stop her and allowed Rekka to lead her into the kitchen. Having learned how to cook from Suiko, Rekka began to cook a small breakfast for Emi.
"Where's your mom?"
"In her room crying, probably," Emi answered, tonelessly. Rekka didn't say anything else, letting the sizzling sound of eggs fill the void of the house. Once the food was done, Rekka placed the plate of eggs in front of Emi. The Bermuda user slowly ate the food in front of her. Deciding to start a conversation to break the awkward atmosphere building, Rekka releases a nervous breath.
"You know, Kamui, right?" Rekka asked, an obvious question.
"Kamui…" That's right, Emi remembers Kamui's name being on the memorial list of those that died being broadcasted worldwide. His name appeared on the screen and Emi had cried even harder, missing the loud spikey haired boy who showered her with attention.
"Ye-yeah...he wanted you to know something. Before he died...he said…" Rekka paused her speech. Emi's blue orbs were penetrating through Rekka's violet ones, peering into the young idol's soul.
"What did he say?
"He said that he loves you."
Emi's entire world stopped once more as Rekka's words melted into her brain. He loved her...Kamui was in love with her and she never noticed. Kamui Katsuragi died before ever being able to tell her and she didn't even know if she felt the same or not. Before she could go into even darker territories with her thoughts, Rekka slammed a deck onto the table.
"W-what?" Emi is stunned by the cards.
"Fight me, Emi."
"I-I'm not in the mo-"
"I'm not giving you a choice. You need to sort everything out, and what better way than a Cardfight," Rekka explained.
Moving towards the living room both girls sat on opposite sides of the table. Decks placed in the [Deck Area] and G0's faced down on the Vanguard circles.
"Stand up! Vanguard!"
Fast-forwarding through the fight both girls sat at 4 damage and were at G3's. Rekka frowned at Emi's playstyle. The younger sibling showed none of her usual enthusiasm throughout the fight and kept making misplays. Her head was nowhere in the fight and Rekka has had enough.
"That's it!" Rekka screamed, causing Emi to jump a bit.
"R-Rekka!?"
"I get it, ok! I understand that it's rough and painful losing those you love! I lost Takuto and Suiko all in one day! All that I have left is Kourin, but she..she's in such a dark place right now that I can't even approach her.." Rekka was crying at this point. Her voice grew softer and softer.
"Rekka...I...I'm so sor-"
"Don't! I'm not here for you to feel sorry for me. I want to help you, Emi. You and Mai are my best friends, you helped save me from the Reverse, now let me save you from this despair," Rekka cried, all of her bottled up emotions came forth. Emi didn't know what to do, she had her own problems, but her friend needed her. What was she supposed to do?
"Follow your heart."
"Huh?" Emi looked around for the voice, but found nobody else besides the crying Rekka in the living room. Suddenly, her pocket started glowing blue and something flew out of it. Emi looked on in shock as the card of Blaster Blade floated in front of her. The light radiating from the card encompassed the entire room almost blinding Emi. As she opened her eyes, she found herself in a large throne room.
"Where am I?"
"United Sanctuary on the Planet Cray," A strong voice spoke. Emi turned around to find the King of Knights Alfred sitting on a throne.
"Welcome Emi Sendou, we've been waiting for you," Alfred smiled, warmly.
"W-waiting for me!? What do you mean!?" Emi stumbled backwards onto her butt. The young girl wondered if all of this is a dream. "No, this isn't a dream," Someone behind her said. Turning around Emi finds the last person she expected.
"B-BLASTER BLADE!?"
"Hello, young Sendou," Blaster Blade smiled and helped the young girl to her feet. Emi couldn't believe she was meeting Blaster Blade..and wait...did he say that this wasn't a dream?
"If this isn't a dream, then why am I here?" Emi asked the two knights. Both knights looked at one another, then Blaster Blade turned his attention back to Emi. "A great tragedy has befallen everyone."
"Yeah, half of the population on earth has died. Including Aichi and Kamui…" Emi explained, heartbroken.
"Not just on earth," Alfred said. Those words caught Emi's full attention.
"W-what do you mean?"
The King arises from his seat and begins to march towards the girl and his knight. "The entire universe has suffered from this effect, including Cray." Emi gasped in horror at the revelation. So many people have been hurt or killed by this mysterious tragedy. "Emi Sendou, we've called you here, because we need your help."
"You need my help to fix this horrific event?" Emi asked, expecting that to be the case.
"No," Blaster Blade answered, much to her constant shock.
"Sadly, we don't know what has caused half of all life to be extinguished, but there's another threat on the horizon ready to make its presence known," Alfred explained.
"Another world ending threat!? Wasn't there enough suffering going on at the moment!?" Emi shouted in anger at the two knights. She wasn't one prone to much anger, but with everything going on at the moment, her emotions are higher than ever.
"We apologize for bringing you into this and you can refuse if you want to, but with the loss of Aichi Sendou, Ren Suzugamori, and with both Leon Soryu and Toshiki Ka broken, the planet Cray is without its Vanguards," Alfred explained the situation.
"B-but what am I even supposed to do!? I'm not that special! I don't possess any powers nor am I that strong at Vanguard to stop powerful opponents!" Emi ranted, tears building up in her eyes.
Blaster Blade smiled, placing his armored hand on Emi's shoulder, stopping the girl's rant. "You're missing one important part, Emi."
"What?"
"You have a heart that can vanquish the darkness."
"Huh? A heart?" Emi questioned. Blaster Blade placed a hand onto his breastplate.
"Just like your elder brother, you possess a strong heart that can defeat the oncoming darkness. Emi Sendou, you can become strong just like my Vanguard," Blaster Blade spoke with warmth and care. Emi couldn't believe what she was hearing. She could become strong like Aichi? Would her fighting this evil make Aichi proud of her?
"I-I…" Emi stutters, still contemplating.
"Emi Sendou! To protect everything that's left! We request your assistance to save Cray and Eath!" Alfred and Blaster Blade shout at the same time. Both knights kneeling down in front Emi Sendou to make it clear how serious the situation is.
Emi stands there gasping at these turn of events in front of her. She's unsure of how to proceed through these events. "I'm not my brother, Kamui, Misaki, or Kai! I'm just a girl who can't even help her own mother move past her grief! How could I even beg-"
"I want to help you, Emi. You and Mai are my best friends, you helped save me from the Reverse, now let me save you from this despair…"
"That's right...we saved Rekka from the Reverse, and Kamui would believe in me all the way. So would Aichi if he was here." Emi makes up her mind and looks at both with a serious expression now occupying her face. Both knights stare in amazement as Emi's body begins to glow radiantly as the mighty sun.
"I'll do it! I no longer want to see my mother crying or see my friends hurt beyond repair! If it means protecting what I have left, then I'll devote my whole life into saving the world my brother and friends love so much!" Emi Sendou declares. Her declaration moves both knights to their feet, inspired by the speech that Emi shouted.
"Very well then, Emi Sendou, with this we'll spend time helping you get stronger to protect Vanguard and both worlds. And no battles are fought alone, I hereby grant you the power of Legion!" Alfred declares to Emi. Before she could ask what "Legion" was, a bright like once again encompassed the entire throne room.
Once she reopened her eyes, Emi found herself back in her living room with the crying Rekka. Emi stood there confused, until she looked down at her left hand and found a Royal Paladin deck sitting in her left hand with Blaster Blade Seeker on top. Emi turned her attention back to her sobbing friend. "Hey, Rekka."
Rekka's tear stained face looked up at Emi and froze on the spot. Her entire body couldn't believe what she was seeing. In front of her was a sight that she'd thought she wouldn't see again for a very long time.
Emi Sendou is smiling brightly like her old self, before the world fell to pieces. A smile that could cure even the darkest of hearts, a smile that made an energetic boy believe in the existence of angels, a smile that helped save her a week ago.
Emi Sendou had returned from the darkness...not only that her eyes were glowing as if a galaxy existed within them. Emi Sendou has given birth to her own Psyqualia.
