After I ended things with Isadora, my phone started ringing. I took it out of my pocket and saw it was Maya calling. I really need to set a song for her ringtone.
"Hello," I answered.
"Hey, can you do me a favor?" She asked me.
"What kind of favor?" I questioned. She sighed.
"KC went into a fit of rage at mom, then ran out of Topanga's," Maya informed me. "My mom had a letter with the address on it from that dirtbag and KC saw it. Lucas said it's caused by her PTSD."
"So, what do you want me to do?" I asked her.
"Could you climb the fire escape at Riley's and see if KC's at the Bay window?" She asked me.
"Sure," I said. "Where's Aaron, by the way? Did he see it?"
"No, he's playing at the park with Auggie and Ava," she said.
"When did that happen?" I asked.
"When KC and Aaron were staying at the Matthews', they became friends," she said. "Anyway, could you please do that for me? We're worried about her."
"Yeah, definitely," I told her in a promising tone.
"Okay, get back to me." I could hear the plead in her voice.
"Will do," I told her.
I took the Subway to Greenwich Village and walked to Riley's apartment building. I climbed the fire escape until I got to Riley's window. Sitting there, at the Bay Window, was KC. I pulled myself in and sat next to her.
"Hey," I greeted her.
She jumped. She looked at me.
"What the hell, Farkle!" She said, freaked out. "Don't do that!"
"Sorry," I said.
"Why are you even here?" She inquired. "Riley and Maya aren't here."
"Yeah, I know," I told her, "they're at Topanga's, worried about you."
"What is wrong with me?" She questioned. "First, I almost kill my sister, then I blow up at my mom."
"You have a disorder," I said. "You can't control what it does to you."
"I can, somewhat, with my medication," she said, "but I'm an idiot."
"No, you're not," I assured her. I placed my hand her shoulder. She looked over at me, at my hand, then back at me. She looked forward. I started to take my hand off of her shoulder, but she grabbed it and held it there. She slowly let go.
"I knew I was going to lose my insurance when I came here," she said. "I thought I had enough medicine to last, but I didn't plan enough ahead. My emancipation also ended, so I was denied to get my own insurance here, since I'm only seventeen and no longer emancipated. I didn't think this all the way through."
"You just wanted to see them again," I told her in a reassuring tone. "You wanted your family."
"I also wanted to meet Lucas' friends that he talked so happily about," she said, letting a small smile surface.
"How did he talk about me?" I asked.
"He said that you're the most trustworthy and loyal friend he's ever had."
I smiled.
"I try to be, but I have had times where I haven't been," I admitted. "I told Riley's secret, when it wasn't my decision to make; I abandoned Riley and Maya at the start of school last year; and I used to be really envious of Lucas."
"At least you recognize it," she said. "I'm not a good sister, daughter, or mom. I probably wasn't even a good wife."
"You're wrong," I stated. "You love Maya and your mom. You love Aaron. You make time for them. I'm positive you loved Jaxon, otherwise, you wouldn't still be wearing your ring."
I motioned to the wedding ring around her neck.
"Thank you, Farkle," she said.
No problem, KC," I told her. "I have to make a call."
I stood up and left the room.
I took out my phone and called Maya.
Within ten minutes, Mrs. Hunter was in Riley's room's doorway, she walked in. I walked away, giving them their privacy. I heard KC cry as she apologized.
I walked into the living room. Riley, Maya, Lucas, and Zay were standing there.
"How is she?" Maya asked.
"This disorder really messed her up," I said, sitting down the couch.
"Why do you say that?" Riley said. We all looked at her. "I mean other than what she did today."
"She doesn't think she a good anything," I said, "even a good wife to your brother." I looked at Lucas.
"That's not just the disorder," Lucas said. "Her father abused her for years, that includes mentally. He made her feel like she was worthless, a nothing. She believed a lot of the stuff he told her. He betrayed her…he didn't love her. That's why it's so hard for her to trust people." He looked at Riley.
"She trusted Jaxon, though, right?" I asked. "And your parents?"
"Jaxon, me, and our mom, mainly," Lucas said.
He sat next to me.
"What about your dad?" Maya asked.
"It was on and off," he said. "One time, after they took guardianship of her, he came home drunk. He ended up punching a hole in the wall and she saw it. She booked it out of the house. When my mom finally caught her, KC asked why he punched the wall over and over. She ended up sleeping in the tree house with Jaxon that night. Then, you know how I said I broke my arm falling out of the treehouse and she broke my collarbone?" We all nodded. "It was before they took custody of her. My dad, being upset about me being hurt, told her that she'd end up just like her father. He didn't mean it, and he never meant to hurt her, but every time things like that would happen, he'd lose her trust."
"Do they have a good relationship now?" Riley asked.
"Yeah," Lucas answered her. "He's a good grandpa to Aaron, and he and KC reconciled a little after I moved here."
"She trusts all of you," Zay said, "well, maybe not you," he pointed at Riley.
"Zay," Lucas warned.
"She ate my cookie!"
"That was a year ago!" Riley said.
"Calm down guys," I said.
"Her trust can be easily broken," Zay said, "but when she loves, she loves deep. I may have not spent much time with her and Jaxon, but that's something I've always noticed. Jaxon really saved her on so many levels."
"All of us did," Lucas said, "including you and your mom, Maya."
"What do you mean?" Maya asked.
"When she was nine, the abuse had already lasted for five years," he said. "She wanted to get away from it so badly."
"Please don't say what I think you're saying," Maya said.
"I was going to kill myself," we heard KC say. We all looked at her in the hall doorway with her mom. "Anthony had this… gun he'd threaten me with." She walked toward us. "One day, when he was out, I took it from the safe. I sat up against the wall and put it to my head. My hands were shaking. I almost pulled the trigger, but I realized that if I did I'd never see the Friars again, but most importantly, you and mom," she looked at Maya. "So, I put it down and pushed it away from me."
"Thank God that you did," I found myself saying.
"Yeah," she said.
Maya walked over to her and wrapped her in a hug, joined by their mom. Lucas and Zay joined in, then I did. Riley hesitated, but finally joined in.
We all sat down and she let herself be as open and honest as she could let herself be about her past.
