When Rayne opened her eyes again she saw the man she only could identify as a cop sitting in a chair and a woman with him. She smiled softly knowing it was clear they were married. She could faintly remember the cop helping the doctor get her into an ambulance but that was about all she could remember. As she yawned she glanced to see numbers on a screen, a small poster of a movie and the city lights in her view. As she was about to try and rest again the doctor came in and she smiled. "You're awake," she breathed in relief. "I'm sorry I put you back to sleep."
"Who?" She pointed to Mac knowing that she needed that answer. Aubrey chuckled and then looked at the sleeping man before making sure that Rayne began eating some food as she had something set aside for when Rayne did wake up.
"His name's Mac Taylor. He's a detective and the one that brought you in. He was really worried about you as was his girlfriend," she answered pointing to the woman. "Her name's Peyton. They were the ones who found you. But they said you were too out of it to tell them what happened." Aubrey smiled as Peyton woke up and put a finger to her lips and slipped out quietly. Aubrey knew the woman wanted to get some work done and didn't need Mac worrying about her at the moment.
"Someone hit me against a van," she answered and Aubrey nodded knowing that had to be the only way she got the injury to her skull. She went to touch it but Aubrey grabbed her hand and put it back against the bed and she looked confused. "Where is he?"
"Who?"
"Ryan. Owner of my home," she answered and Aubrey knew someone had to tell her but that was more Mac's jurisdiction than her's. She was about to say something before he heard the man groan in slight pain and he looked to see Aubrey and Rayne sitting together.
"Did I miss anything?"
"No she just woke up and got some dinner into her," Aubrey answered. "Did your men get him?" Mac nodded and then Aubrey knew this was where Mac came into play. "I'll be back in a little bit to see how your abdomen wounds are." Rayne nodded and so did Mac.
"What did she mean? Who did you get that she had to ask about now?" Mac knew he had to tell her where she was before was illegal and that's why nobody told her a number to contact the owner as the whole city had been looking for her.
"Rayne, the person who runs the orphanage you live in? He wasn't supposed to have you. He lost his rights to own the orphanage about a year ago and went into hiding. Left all the other kids but took you with him and kept you locked away. Told you nothing about that and said you couldn't contact him outside of the house," Mac explained slowly. He waited to see if she got confused and she looked to be processing everything. "My team back at the Crime Lab, which is where your head got bashed in, found your key card to get into the house and realized it was a security key when we swiped it down the side of the door. He wanted to make sure nobody could get to him and figure out he was illegally running the place. You were on a missing person's index for a year as were all the other kids we found in your home," he informed.
"People were looking? For us?" Rayne couldn't process that part and Mac couldn't blame her. Her head wound would have left her a little woozy and on top of that, hearing she was considered a missing person for a year would scare her.
"Yes. You had a whole group of people constantly looking for you. They believed you were alive," Mac responded looking at her. "Even though the case went cold, there were still people who were certain you were alive. So they kept pushing the detective of the case, Don Flack, to keep looking. We just hit a lucky break when you managed to be found out cold almost against our Medical Examiner's van," Mac answered and she nodded wincing in pain. "What hurts?"
"Head," she muttered and he carefully stood and looked at it to see she had accidently unhooked the wrapping and some of the wound was rubbing against the pillow. He knew some basic fastening and saw Aubrey coming so he did walk around to try and fix it. When he glanced up he saw Aubrey walking in.
"She accidently snagged the clip and it came undone making her wound rub right against that," he informed revealing a small sign of irritation and the pillow that caused it. Aubrey chuckled and then pursed her lips looking in thought. "What?"
"I think we might have to use a gauze patch," she decided and then put her finger up. Rayne looked to Mac and even he looked confused so he shrugged. As she returned she looked at Mac. "Can you hold her head straight?" Mac gently took the sides of her head and held them still as she leaned forwards and Aubrey undid her bindings. "Alright slowly lean back Rayne," she instructed and she was helping Mac lower her as she carefully soaked a bandage in antiseptic and she groaned in pain as it hit her forehead. "I know, but we have to reclean the wound if we're going to put something new on it," she apologized.
After a few more minutes her head was settled back on the pillow with a gauze over it. "How long until she's discharged?"
"Let's see," she answered as she gently moved Rayne's gown to examine the wound and frowned. "It's not infected but without the Child Protective Services coming in, I can't release her," Aubrey answered looking at him. "She'd need a foster family to be able to go home."
Mac knew what he so desperately wanted to say but couldn't. As he was about to say something he saw Sheldon walking in. "Thanks for calling me Aubrey," he greeted before looking at Rayne. "You remember me?" She nodded weakly and he chuckled.
"Where's Peyton?"
"She's working on a body," Hawkes began before Aubrey gently moved the covering on Rayne's abdomen and Hawkes chuckled sadly. "You really took a number. You noticed the same things huh? No signs of infection at all. Once someone from Child Protective Services comes we can get her out of here," he confirmed.
"What if someone expressed interest in taking her in?" Mac knew how not to make it sound like he wanted her right away as she needed to be the one to say it as Peyton's request was pretty well crystal clear. Hawkes looked at him and he nodded while Rayne wasn't looking.
"Mind if I have a word with Rayne?" Hawkes looked to Aubrey and she nodded shooing Mac out who stood by the door waiting. "You have him pretty worried about you," Hawkes noted and she chuckled at that nodding knowing it was the truth.
"He's a good guy. He's been helping me a lot since I woke up. Even explained the whole illegal thing," she responded casually and then she looked in thought. "What he said explains a little of why nobody came to look at us," she mused.
"You make it sound like there's more," Hawkes teased as he stood by the window waiting. She made a small sound and he glanced to see her trying to look at the wounds that he had recovered up and he chuckled swatting her hand away. "What did you mean it explained only a little?"
"His home, it was the reject home of the city," she explained. Hawkes looked at her shocked and she nodded. "Yeah. Whenever a kid was brought there we all called it the final stop. Either we'd get very lucky and get adopted, or we'd be stuck there until we aged out." Before he could say much, he saw Peyton walk in and she smiled at the two of them.
"I heard you were awake and coherent again," she noted smiling at her and Hawkes walked out taking the hints. Peyton looked at her smiling and once the door closed she looked at Rayne. "I know about what happened. Mac also said you were revealed to have been on the missing person index."
"Yeah apparently I was missing for a year and didn't know it. I never clued in. Wear a hood, never let someone see your face, cover it up," she muttered. Peyton knew she wanted to let Rayne say it first, but she also didn't want to watch her leave and not receive the proper care.
"Well I think for you, it's a good thing me and Mac found you," Peyton answered looking at her. Rayne glanced at her confused and she smiled softly. "I wanted to let you come forward first but now I know you don't have much hope. You do have people who want to adopt you. For who you are. Not for the pity."
"Okay," she chuckled disbelievingly.
"You do. You have me and Mac who want to bring you home. In a heartbeat we would," Peyton answered looking at her. "You are loved. You have value. You just need a chance to see it," she answered. "So would you want that?"
"If you don't think you're making a mistake," she answered and Peyton nodded gently pulling Rayne to her side and hugging her. She then smiled as she saw Rayne's face change into a smile slowly and tears fell down her face.
"We aren't. We'll always be there," she promised.
When the morning arrived, Mac had finally gotten a hold of the people who were in charge of Rayne's records.
